Magma Wyrm Makar is a Great Enemy Boss in Elden Ring. Makar was once human, but was transformed into a lesser dragon for the sin of Dragon Communion and now guards the Ruin-Strewn Precipice in Liurnia of the Lakes. This is an optional boss as players don't have to defeat it to advance in Elden Ring.

See also Magma Wyrm and Great Wyrm Theodorix.

It's said these land-bound dragons were once humans heroes who partook in dragon communion, a grave transgression for which they were cursed to crawl the earth upon their bellies, shadows of their former selves.

Magma Wyrm Makar Combat information

Negations (or Absorptions)

The negation numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example, if a negation is 60, 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% will be negated. Bigger number = less damage. A negation of 100 means no damage goes through, and a negation of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.

Resistances

The resistance numbers are the buildup amount to trigger it. For example, if a resistance is 100 you must deal 100 points of the given buildup to trigger it. Note that these go down over time, and increase each time the effect procs. The values after the "/"s indicate the increased resistances after each successive proc.

Additional Fight Strategy

Use the large center pillar as a barrier. Lead Makar to it, then head to the opposite side. As long as you stay close to the pillar, it'll continue to execute its attacks or perhaps get stuck in a walking animation while the pillar will act as a shield. Then you can freely used ranged attacks to get in damage.

This boss is the easiest in the game dude didn't even touch me didn’t have to roll he would rather attack the wall instead as I stand right next to him wondering what he’s doing

I don't really have anything to say about the boss, but I think the area you fight him in is really pretty

I saw some comments about the runes, in my first game I beat him without an npc and he gave me 24,000 runes.

Note the very low resistances to sleep. If you're using melee weapons with decent stance pressure, your best strategy is to probably use sleep pots, and go for charged heavies for the stance break (you can crit if it kills him, otherwise you might be better off just continuing to melt his health down with more charged heavies). It'll stop him from vomiting magma and running all over the place, and buy you the time you need to kill him. I personally get the Dectus Medallions to get to Altus, get the bell bearing for smithing stones to level my weapon to +12 or get the Somber Smithing Stones in Volcano Manor, and come back with upgraded equipment if I'm going for all 165 bosses. Otherwise, he's easily skippable.

I think, I am not 100% sure, but looking at some comments below saying they only got 18k runes, the cause of this MIGHT be the NPC summons. I only summoned 1 of them because I didn't know you could summon all three. Upon his death, I only received 22k runes.

I wonder if each NPC summon whittles down the runes by 2k each?

I'm not sure, yet I definitely did NOT get 24k runes.

As someone below said, the summons did not attack this magma wyrm. Millicent and Tragoth just stood around. My mimic tear spirit ash went right after it thankfully, but the other two are complete wastes and bugged.

                  • Anonymous

Tried all three of the available summons and they didn't attack him. Boggart did a few times maybe but most of the time they just followed me around doing nothing. Switched tactics and beat him just fine, but is this a common issue? These three NPCs just walk in with me and say "Uh, lava? Dragon? No thanks. You're on your own."

Wow going from dieing alone repeatedly to valiant gargoyles to getting to 1 shot this boss with a whole horde of npc summons feels sooooooooooo nice

                      • Anonymous

One of the only magma wyrms fights thats actually good, mainly because he's not stuck in an arena thats clearly too tiny for him, where its nigh impossible to avoid his attacks.

                        • Anonymous

Imma summon the whole gang to fight this guy, idc. Tragoth, Boggart, Millicent and my trusted Fanged Imps. It's gonna be a beatdown. Last playthrough I fought him solo, so now it's time to do the opposite

                          • Anonymous

How to easily beat this dude without summons:

I beat this dude easily with rotten breath, but really anything that can inflict rot will probably work.

If you inflict him with scarlet rot, bait him around the giant pillar until it wears off.

Rinse and repeat and it’s easy to beat him without taking damage!

                            • Anonymous

I feel like - if you can do everything you need to do to get Millicent to this point, do you even need Millicent for this boss? Some of the things in Caelid are way scarier.

                              • Anonymous

IMO this boss is much easier if you DON'T use the NPC summons. Having Boggart and the Poise Chad help you sounds nice at first, but the damage they're dealing doesn't nearly offset the additional health Makar gets when you summon NPCs. They also don't seem to make any effort to get out of the bosses AoE, so they die rather quickly. If you walk in solo, the boss has significantly less health.

For sorcery builds, Rock Sling works extremely well (as it does against all other dragons). For melee builds, just hugging his belly will make him miss all of his fire attacks.

Fought the one on Mt.Gelmir. It delayed its overhead slam for 10 seconds. Dude was legitimately just standing there.

                                  • Anonymous

This fight is honestly much easier without summons. The first time I tried this I brought two NPC summons just for the lulz and his health bar was absolutely silly, by the time both of them + Lhutel were all dead he still had 75% hp.

Came back and tried it again solo using a winged scythe I accidentally didn't have the Dex to wield properly, so he still felt like he had a big health bar the bleed procs helped take him down, probably pretty easy if I had had a weapon I could properly wield.

just like the plain magma wyrm fight you just gotta be patient to beat this guy. The Giant pillar in the middle is helpful for hiding from some of his biggest attacks, I found I could somewhat reliably trigger his forward lava breath attack by dancing around in front of his face in front of the pillar, when he started the animation I'd start sprinting around the pillar, and I would generally arrive right at his head just as the counter window opened up. He hits a phase 2 at like 30% hp where he starts standing on his hind legs more frequently, just stay on the move and punish when you get a chance.

Those dealing with the Grace Point being bugged, it's like this here and at a few other locations. Castle Morne boss room comes to mind as one.

Simply quit out, and log in. Fixes it right away.

With the amount of NPC's you can summon in this fight the drake should of been much stronger then just a mere field boss.

Can't get a single NPC (milicent, Tragoth, Blackguard) to spawn for this fight. I talked to everyone and did the stuff that was supposed to make them appear (talk to Milicent at Gowry's shack, buy Blackguard's prawns etc.) but the summon signs still dont show. And yes I have activated the summoning stake. :(

                                                        • Anonymous

For some reason I cannot summon a single NPC for the Magma Wyrm fight. Not Milicent, Tragor or Blackguard. I have talked to all of them and progressed quests by following the wiki, but not a single summon sign show up for me in front of the fog wall.

Anyone know what could be the issue?

Not hard. Just very obnoxious if it decides to run around all over the place. If RNG isn’t on your side, grab a box and poison arrows. If it’s gonna waste your time, might as well punish it.

                                                            • Anonymous

The first phase is basicaly like the other magma wyrm, I got the ash of war ice spear and it was devastating. I would do 500+ damage if I hit the head. Other option like the peble is also viable (is how I beat the other wyrm) but it takes too long

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          • Anonymous

I know I'm probably under-levelled for this fight, so I thought I'd give it a go with the Tragoth and Blaggard NPC summons and they don't seem to want to fight...?? Unlike the spirit ash summons and any NPC summon in other fights, these two just seem to stand behind me and ignore the boss unless they actually get cornered, and even then they'll only fight until the boss changes targets. Anyone else seen this?

I stood behind the central pillar to try setting up a pincer attack, and they just stood there with me. Summoned a spirit and it immediately ran off to the boss. I ran out to do my pincer attack and they still just hung back???

                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                                • best bet to beat this bastard at low level (the only time this boss isn't a pushover) would be to cheese with spells and arrows, or equip a good stagger weapon and pray that it doesn't just run across the arena over and over, charged heavy it into oblivion wherever you can

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

Not here. So don't bother staggering him unless you have a very strong Critical Hit build. He appears vulnerable to Bleed, but I can't say for certain. And I don't know if poison works either. He drops a dragon heart, but dragon grease doesn't seem to give you any bonus damage against him?

All in all, a very tough and somewhat cheap boss-- too many one-hit-kill attacks from him.

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Summoned Marionette soldiers and aced him with Loretta’s Greatbow. He staggered with just a bit of health left so I finished him with a poke in the eye.
