Magma Wyrm Makar is a Boss in Elden Ring. This Elden Ring Magma Wyrm Makar Guide features boss locations, tips, strategies and videos on how to defeat Makar easily, as well as boss stats and lore for Makar.

Magma Wyrm Makar is a Dragon creature found in Ruin-Strewn Precipice in Liurnia of the Lakes and is one of various Magma Wyrm variations found in-game. These creatures were once humans who once partook in dragon communication. This grave transgression eventually caused them to lose themselves and transform into wyrms.

This is an optional boss as players don't have to defeat it to advance in Elden Ring. It is recommended to equip and consume Equipment and Items that boost your Fire resistance as many of Makar's big AOE moves deal heavy Fire Damage. As with many boss fights, staying near it's hind legs will allow you to avoid or dodge away from many of it's attacks easier. It drops a Dragon Heart and the Magma Wyrm's Scalesword when defeated.

Bosses are unique and challenging Enemies that can be encountered all over the Lands Between. Great Enemy bosses can drop unique Spirit AshesWeaponsSpells, and other various Items.

It's said these land-bound dragons were once humans heroes who partook in dragon communion, a grave transgression for which they were cursed to crawl the earth upon their bellies, shadows of their former selves.

Resistances:

The resistance numbers is the buildup amount to trigger it. For example if a resistance is 100 you must deal 100 points of whatever aux buildup to trigger it. Note that these go down over time, and increase each time the effect procs.

Magma Wyrm Makar Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Magma Wyrm Makar:

  • Use the Kaiden Sellsword Ash Summons
  • Glintstone Pebble is excellent for this fight. Aim for the head.
  • Bring fire resistance Items
  • In phase 2 it's pretty easy to stay near its legs safely
  • Seems easy to posture break with charged heavy attacks on its legs

Melee Users

Phase one use your Spirt Summons to distract him while trying to stay by back legs, watch out for his tail swipe and the lava pools left by his fire breath.

Phase two he will stand on its hind legs making it easier to stay behind, and if enough damage is dealt quickly he will fall and his head is open for a visceral attack

Magic and Ranged Users

Use your Spirit Summons to distract him while you cast spells at range. Keep away from him and avoid his AoE attacks and fire. Glintstone Pebble is a great ranged spell as it can stay out of harms way and still hit him.

Use the large center pillar as a barrier, simply lead him to it, and travel to the opposite side while staying close. He will continue to execute his attacks or perhaps get stuck in a walking animation, and while the pillar acts as a shield, you may use ranged attacks to deal damage (i.e. bows ...).

Magma Wyrm Makar Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Magma Breath (phase 1)  Makar raises their chest and rears their  head back while lava particles appear in their mouth. The wyrm then rises momentarily to their hind legs and spits a glob of lava forwards at the player. This attack leaves behind a pool of lava that staggers and damages players who enter it.  This attack is heavily punishable, but has a telegraph very similar to Makar’s charge. To avoid a costly mistake, stand just in front of the wyrm’s forepaw, and watch to see if both front feet come off the ground. If it does not and the wyrm begins to move forwards, this is the charge and you need to roll sideways. If it does, it is the highly punishable lava spew; run under the wyrm and begin to attack.
Charge (phase 1)  Makar raises their chest and rears their head back while lava particles appear in their mouth. The wyrm then begins to charge forwards, dealing damage on contact with any part of its model and leaving a trail of lava puddles in its wake that stagger and damage players who step in them. This attack may be chained up to three times in a row, and will knock the player down if they are physically struck by the wyrm.  This attack is highly dangerous, but has a telegraph very similar to Makar’s highly punishable lava spew. To avoid a costly mistake, stand just in front of the wyrm’s forepaw, and watch to see if both front feet come off the ground. If they do not and the wyrm begins to move forwards, this is the charge and you need to roll sideways. Be careful not to be caught in front of the wyrm; standing there can often lead to Makar knocking you backwards along the path they are charging, and then trampling over you as you recover from the initial knockdown.
Sideways
Magma Breath
(phase 1)
Makar turns their head to either the left or right, and waits momentarily as lava particles appear in their mouth. The wyrm then sprays a glob of lava towards its hind leg. This attack leaves behind a pool of lava that staggers and damages players who enter it.  Hug Makar’s body and sprint under their head, then attack while the wyrm is busy spewing lava
Scalesword Swipe (phase 1)  Makar raises their scalesword in one hand, and after a short delay swings from their right to their left (your left to your right). This attack will knock the player down if it connects.  Roll to the left through the sweep and attack the wyrm
Scalesword Combo (phase 1) Makar slams the flat of their scalesword vertically into the ground in front of their head, then yanks the hooklike blade backwards. This attack will knock the player to the ground if it connects.  Roll through the initial slam and the followup hook, or roll through the initial slam and move to the right of Makar’s body.
Scalesword Spin (phase 1) This attack is commonly used when the player is behind Makar. The wyrm raises their scalesword, then spins clockwise to face the player (that is, Makar spins to their right) while delivering a sweeping blow with the weapon. This attack will knock the player to the ground if it connects. Step back slightly from Makar, as their body becomes a hitbox during this attack. Roll through the sweep from their scalesword, and attack the wyrm’s head.
Wyrm’s Guillotine
(phase 1)

Makar grips their scalesword in both hands, rises momentarily onto their hind legs, then abruptly slams downwards to create a shockwave. Being hit directly by the blade will deal more damage than that of the shockwave, but both will knock the player to the ground if they connect.

Dodge through the shockwave and attack the head. Note that the dodge timing for this attack is earlier than it appears.

Magma Guillotine
(phase 2)

This attack is used as Makar transitions from phase 1 to phase 2. Makar raises their head as particles of lava appear in their mouth, then spews a series of lava globs forwards in a fanlike arc from their left to their right (your right to your left) over their sword that lands a short distance in front of the wyrm. This attack leaves behind a pool of lava that staggers and damages players who enter it.

Sprint forwards between Makar’s legs and attack them. If you stagger the wyrm, do not attempt to riposte; the head will be surrounded by lava that does extreme damage and prevents you from easily reaching it. Instead, simply continue to attack the body.
Standing Lava Spew (phase 2)

Makar raises their head as particles of lava appear in their mouth, then spews a series of lava globs forwards in a fanlike arc from their left to their right (your right to your left) that land far from the wyrm. This attack leaves behind a pool of lava that staggers and damages players who enter it.

Sprint forwards between Makar’s legs and attack them.
Charge (phase 2) Makar raises their head as particles of lava appear in their mouth, then begins to spew lava in front of themself as they walk forwards. This attack leaves behind a pool of lava that staggers and damages players who enter it. Attack Makar a few times as they prepare the attack, then run around and behind them to avoid being pushed by the wyrm’s body into the lava pools forming behind you.
Scalesword Slam (phase 2) Makar raises their scalesword above their head and holds that position for several moments. Then, they slam the blade vertically into the ground, creating a massive shockwave. Being hit directly by the sword deals more damage than being hit by only the shockwave, and both will knock the player to the ground if they connect. Do not attempt to run behind Makar; the shockwave is large enough to hit you even if you are at the tail. Instead, attack the wyrm as they raise their sword, and watch for them to begin slamming the blade down. Dodge very late as they do this, and then continue to attack Makar.
Rolling Scalesword Slam (phase 2) Makar rolls sideways away from the player, then rolls back towards them with a swipe into the ground from their right to their left (your left to your right). This attack will knock the player to the ground if it connects. Roll to the left through the slash and attack Makar.
Standing Scalesword Sweep (phase 2) Makar brings their scalesword over their left shoulder, then sweeps it across the ground from their left to their right (your right to your left). This attack will knock the player to the ground if it connects. Roll to the right through the sweep and attack Makar
Scalesword Stab
(phase 2)
Makar crouches down, then stabs forwards with their scalesword. After stabbing, they catch themselves momentarily on their forepaws and roar before rising back to a standing position. Roll to the right to avoid the stab, and then attack the vulnerable head.
Slashing Scalesword (phase 2) Makar steps forwards with their left (your right) leg, then brings their scalesword up from their right to their left (your left to your right) in a diagonal slash. Following this, they briefly raise the scalesword above their head before slamming it vertically downwards. Either attack will knock the player to the ground if it connects. Roll left through the rising slash, then roll sideways to dodge the slam before attacking Makar.
Slamming Scalesword (phase 2) Makar raises their scalesword over their right (your left) shoulder, then quickly slams it vertically downwards. The wyrm then quickly follows this first slam with a second vertical slam. Roll sideways twice to dodge each slam, then attack Makar.
Wyrm’s Wrath (phase 2) Makar raises their scalesword to their left (your right), then slams it to the ground with both hands (but does NOT cause a shockwave). The wyrm then leans forwards and spits a glob of lava at the player. The slam will knock the player to the ground if it connects, and the latter leaves behind a pool of lava that staggers and damages players who enter it. Roll forwards through the slam, and then attack Makar as they spit lava harmlessly over your head.

Magma Wyrm Makar Lore, Notes & Other Trivia

  • Like other magma wyrms, Makar has two sets of teeth protruding from the roof of their mouth behind their primary dentition, somewhat resembling the pterygoidal teeth of mosasaurs.
  • Like other magma wyrms, Makar was once a human who partook too deeply of Dragon Communion, eventually transforming into the monstrous wyrm they appear as today.
  • Makar is one of the five named dragons who do not have specified genders (the other four are Borealis the Freezing Fog, Flying Dragon Greyll, Glintstone Dragon Adula, and Flying Dragon Agheel).
  • Makar is one of only two dragons in the game who drops a weapon upon defeat (the other is the Magma Wyrm found in Gael Tunnel).

Wow going from dieing alone repeatedly to valiant gargoyles to getting to 1 shot this boss with a whole horde of npc summons feels sooooooooooo nice

      • Anonymous

One of the only magma wyrms fights thats actually good, mainly because he's not stuck in an arena thats clearly too tiny for him, where its nigh impossible to avoid his attacks.

        • Anonymous

Imma summon the whole gang to fight this guy, idc. Tragoth, Boggart, Millicent and my trusted Fanged Imps. It's gonna be a beatdown. Last playthrough I fought him solo, so now it's time to do the opposite

          • Anonymous

How to easily beat this dude without summons:

I beat this dude easily with rotten breath, but really anything that can inflict rot will probably work.

If you inflict him with scarlet rot, bait him around the giant pillar until it wears off.

Rinse and repeat and it’s easy to beat him without taking damage!

            • Anonymous

I feel like - if you can do everything you need to do to get Millicent to this point, do you even need Millicent for this boss? Some of the things in Caelid are way scarier.

              • Anonymous

IMO this boss is much easier if you DON'T use the NPC summons. Having Boggart and the Poise Chad help you sounds nice at first, but the damage they're dealing doesn't nearly offset the additional health Makar gets when you summon NPCs. They also don't seem to make any effort to get out of the bosses AoE, so they die rather quickly. If you walk in solo, the boss has significantly less health.

For sorcery builds, Rock Sling works extremely well (as it does against all other dragons). For melee builds, just hugging his belly will make him miss all of his fire attacks.

Fought the one on Mt.Gelmir. It delayed its overhead slam for 10 seconds. Dude was legitimately just standing there.

                  • Anonymous

This fight is honestly much easier without summons. The first time I tried this I brought two NPC summons just for the lulz and his health bar was absolutely silly, by the time both of them + Lhutel were all dead he still had 75% hp.

Came back and tried it again solo using a winged scythe I accidentally didn't have the Dex to wield properly, so he still felt like he had a big health bar the bleed procs helped take him down, probably pretty easy if I had had a weapon I could properly wield.

just like the plain magma wyrm fight you just gotta be patient to beat this guy. The Giant pillar in the middle is helpful for hiding from some of his biggest attacks, I found I could somewhat reliably trigger his forward lava breath attack by dancing around in front of his face in front of the pillar, when he started the animation I'd start sprinting around the pillar, and I would generally arrive right at his head just as the counter window opened up. He hits a phase 2 at like 30% hp where he starts standing on his hind legs more frequently, just stay on the move and punish when you get a chance.

i regret killing this guy, he was just chilling in his cave as out of the way as possible. why did i do it

Those dealing with the Grace Point being bugged, it's like this here and at a few other locations. Castle Morne boss room comes to mind as one.

With the amount of NPC's you can summon in this fight the drake should of been much stronger then just a mere field boss.

So cool how the scalesword description says that the wyrms were once humans who worshipped the dragons too hard and were cursed to slither on their bellies in a weak imitation of their false idols. So metal

Would've loved to summon Milicent or Blackguard for this fight, IF ONLY THEIR ****ING SUMMON SIGNS WOULD SHOW UP.

And yes, I've completed the prerequisites.

Can't get a single NPC (milicent, Tragoth, Blackguard) to spawn for this fight. I talked to everyone and did the stuff that was supposed to make them appear (talk to Milicent at Gowry's shack, buy Blackguard's prawns etc.) but the summon signs still dont show. And yes I have activated the summoning stake. :(

For some reason I cannot summon a single NPC for the Magma Wyrm fight. Not Milicent, Tragor or Blackguard. I have talked to all of them and progressed quests by following the wiki, but not a single summon sign show up for me in front of the fog wall.

Anyone know what could be the issue?

Not hard. Just very obnoxious if it decides to run around all over the place. If RNG isn’t on your side, grab a box and poison arrows. If it’s gonna waste your time, might as well punish it.

The first phase is basicaly like the other magma wyrm, I got the ash of war ice spear and it was devastating. I would do 500+ damage if I hit the head. Other option like the peble is also viable (is how I beat the other wyrm) but it takes too long

The flame of frenzy and about 2 fully charged heavies from a big weapon will bring it down for a crit, easy peezy

Not so bad compared to the cramped version in Selia but why does this one dash around so dang much. Cut back to decaf or something bro.

The Maga Wyrm Gracpoint wouldn't let me activate it after i beat him but after i fast traveled back to the previous gracepoint it started working.

Why is his AoE slam attack so hard to dodge? I swear to god I'm able to dodge every his attack, but for some reason I always get hit and one shot on this one.

Be wary of using too many NPC summons. Made my life much more difficult by trying to use every available summon, but this will increase the boss health accordingly. This fight was easier for me WITHOUT summons

It seems like if the requirements for the Blackguard and Millicent are met - Blackguard takes priority so you can either summon Targoth and Blackguard or Targoth and Millicent but not all three.

I know I'm probably under-levelled for this fight, so I thought I'd give it a go with the Tragoth and Blaggard NPC summons and they don't seem to want to fight...?? Unlike the spirit ash summons and any NPC summon in other fights, these two just seem to stand behind me and ignore the boss unless they actually get cornered, and even then they'll only fight until the boss changes targets. Anyone else seen this?

I stood behind the central pillar to try setting up a pincer attack, and they just stood there with me. Summoned a spirit and it immediately ran off to the boss. I ran out to do my pincer attack and they still just hung back???

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                              • Anonymous

One thing I used for decent effectiveness is the amazing mechanic we love to call *lightining*. Seemed pretty good and bumped my damage up quite a bit with the electrify miracle.

                                                                                • best bet to beat this bastard at low level (the only time this boss isn't a pushover) would be to cheese with spells and arrows, or equip a good stagger weapon and pray that it doesn't just run across the arena over and over, charged heavy it into oblivion wherever you can

                                                                                  • Anonymous

Hoarfrost stomp did some real damage to this guy. But I have to say, critical hits... aren't. Not here. So don't bother staggering him unless you have a very strong Critical Hit build. He appears vulnerable to Bleed, but I can't say for certain. And I don't know if poison works either. He drops a dragon heart, but dragon grease doesn't seem to give you any bonus damage against him?

All in all, a very tough and somewhat cheap boss-- too many one-hit-kill attacks from him.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

Got him on the first try, without even taking a single hit. Summoned Marionette soldiers and aced him with Loretta’s Greatbow. He staggered with just a bit of health left so I finished him with a poke in the eye.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                                          • If you're playing with sorceries the best strategy for any normal dragon, and wyrm isn't to use Pebble and get under it's legs. You want to be casting rock sling directly at it's head to break it's stance. For normal dragons, not the elder varieties, it's best to stay under it's head and neck area to do this. For Wyrms and Elder dragon variants you have to create distance and wait for an opening. Even if you aren't using a physical weapon in addition to casting breaking your enemy's stance gives you time to cast at least one possible two heavy hitting spells and or replenish health and FP.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

Faith paladin build with like 25 faith.

If you don't have enough Intelligence to use Rock Sling, you can equip one of the Raya Lucaria helmets for +3 Intelligence (at least one of the helmets - the Olivinus helmet can be found without having to defeat any of the Raya Lucaria bosses)
