Messmer the Impaler is a Boss in Elden Ring. Messmer the Impaler is a boss added in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC and can only be challenged by players who possess the DLC. He is accompanied by a snake and uses fire based Spells to attack the player, as well as a large spear. Not much information is available besides his clear resemblance to another Red Haired Demigod and a connection to Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy through the red snakes he carries.

Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree DLC Gameplay
MESSMER THE IMPALER INFORMATION ELDEN RING
In one of the main pieces of artwork of Messmer the Impaler he is shown to be sitting on the throne of Morgott the Omen King, in the words of game director Hidetaka Miyazaki this symbolizes he is at least on equal terms to other demigods and children of Queen Marika. Part of the DLC will be exploring why the Lands of Shadow exists, as well as their relationship with this mysterious antagonist.
Another thing of note is that he carries the same eyes as dragons and runebears, this could mean he is one of the many characters that communes with dragons in the game.

Somebody should check about Presbyterian symbol and how it connects to messmer. The Latin inscription underneath the symbol translates as "burning but flourishing". Alternative versions of the motto are also used, such as "Nec Tamen Consumebatur" (yet not consumed).

I swear he's not the final boss, as in every fromsoft dlc trailer the final boss never shown

Nah, not going to be the hardest boss in the DLC, there has to be very very hidden boss, completely optional to finish the DLC bc it's too hard

I didn't realise he was weak to A and B. I'll try make a build around that.

This guy has all the forbidden powers by the erdtree. Flame, dragon eyes, serpents, thorn.

I think there is a picture of Messmer in table of lost grace. Right before the doors where Fia gives D. destined death. Golden crown and red hair picture next to erd tree picture

anyone gonna talk about how we has a missing left eye in the same fashion as melina and ranni?
- Anonymous
What if Messmer is male Malenia like St. Trina is female Miquella.
- Anonymous
So this is what I could get about him:
- Not a lot info in base game
- Demigod (throne chair)
- Radagon son (red hair)
- Dragon communion cult (eyes)
- Inherited Blasphemy fire (snakes on his body)
- Banished to the underworld (commit big sin, burn the erdtree????)
- Anonymous
I think this is actually Miquella but corrupted by the formless mother
- Anonymous
I wonder if he can top Malenia in difficulty. Perhaps in line with this Sekiro mechanic they’re using he might use some kind of posture gauge that you have to deplete before he takes damage.

I can’t wait to walk into his arena and he passes a basketball to me and the camera pans over to reveal his jordans and it is a basketball court and the hardest fromsoftware boss ever because of hid grab where he dunks on you which is a guaranteed one shot and you can’t prevent rune loss and it crashes the game and deletes your character and then uninstalls the game

Putting real money right now on this dude not being the real final boss.

Extremely odd there is no mention or foreshadowing of Messmer or the entire Land of Shadow anywhere in the base game. In DS3 there was at least a bit of foreshadowing of both DLC's through a handful of item descriptions and environmental storytelling. Based on the trailer the whole thing just feels like one big asspull but hell maybe I'm wrong
- Anonymous
Thinking this guy is a similar character story-wise to that of the Nameless King from Dark Souls 3, the son of Gwyn who committed treason by siding with the dragons and had his name and history expunged from historical record.
Messmer is perhaps a son of Radagon who committed heresy against the Greater Will by embracing flame (and also blasphemy given the snakes), and was thus banished to the Land of Shadow and had his name and history erased from record, which would provide a reason for there being zero lore or foreshadowing of him in the base game.

anyone else think the whole thing about snakes being viewed as a "traitor to the erdtree" is because of this guy, doubled by the fact that he holds some kinda special kind of flame (frenzy or not)?
i hope his second phase has him turn into an true ancient dragon

guys, remember that lady maria was featured as the biggest boss on bloodborne's dlc, but was orphan of kos who ****ed us up
Friendship ended with Gwendolyn. Now Messmer is my best friend.

I don't believe Messmer will be the final boss of the dlc. I believe it will be a sort of fake out boss akin to Artorias in the dark souls 1 Artorias of the abyss dlc. Artorias like Messmer was hyped up a lot and used in the promotional material heavily, yet wasn't the final boss of the game. I believe a similar thing will happen with Messmer, though I do believe we will fight him latter instead of him being an early boss like Artorias. I expect him to be the penultimate final boss.

Idk if it’s recency bias or what, but this has to be my favorite Demi-God design. The red cape, the sinister feel he has, the snakes surrounding him. What an amazing design.

Can't wait to come back to this comment section after the DLC, lmao.

Another thing of note is that he carries the same eyes as dragons and runebears, this could mean he is one of the many characters that communes with dragons in the game.
so not the fact the 2nd thing we see of himis a shot of him holding the dragon communion seal?

I'm pretty sure he at least related to the drake knights in someway, do to the eyes and the armor having a similar feel to the drake knights armor. that also means that his weapon is most likely Arc/dex.

I guess it’s no coincidence that the cover art for the DLC depicts an intersection of a ring-shaped snake at shoulder level with Messmer’s straight spear .. This way, it perfectly matches the new Rune in the trailer and also resembles Malenia/Miquella’s Great Rune
- Anonymous
Trust me. This wont be the main boss of DLC. Its a qute miquella foreplay.
Both will **** us up

He looks so cool! his red cape, the snake around him, his voice, him overall, I CAN'T WAIT !!
June 21st is still in a long time sadly ;-;

So we know that Miquella “shed his flesh” when he traveled to the land of shadow.
That flesh was what Mohg had in the cocoon and was trying to feed blood, but it wouldn’t respond.
But what if it did? Not in the undying lands, but in the land of shadow a land that exists at the same time in the same area as the undying lands, but is yet somehow separate from it. Maybe parallel?
Maybe, Messmer is the “flesh of Miquella” raised to power and obsession with grace by the corruption, while the spirit of Miquella remains pure and focuses on raising and protecting the graceless either in his original form or as St. Trina.
And we already have precedent for a single aspect of divinity splitting into two distinct shared forms, specifically Radagon and Marika.
All theories until the DLC drops, but I wouldn’t be surprised.

I think he might actually turn out to be optional, or perhaps a mandatory but not final boss. The trailer for RC had shown Midir, but not Gael. Trailer for Old Hunters had shown Laurence, but not Orphan. AotA trailer had shown Kalameet, but not Manus(unless we count the arm). I don't think fromsoft has ever shown the final boss in the trailer? So I anticipate he will be either optional or, more likely, will be fought somewhere midway through the DLC.

English voice actor vaguely sounds like Kevin T. Collins, the VA for Griffith in Berserk 1997’s dub. This would be perfect and absolutely something Miyazaki would do, so I hope I turn out to be right.
- Anonymous
perhaps he's not a physical being that actually existed, but a manifestation like the Orphan of Kos. maybe even the whole Land of Shade is a "punishment realm" for blasphemers, like the Hunter's Nightmare was for the blood drunk hunters.
- Anonymous
He bears a striking resemblance to that of the drake knight set. It mentions in this page he has the same eyes as dragons and runebears, and his design has wings, small dragon wings. He could be a drake knight in a stage of dragon communion, as stated by Yura, Bloody Finger Hunter after you killed Agheel and showed him the heart "You must not forget though. Those who partake in Dragon Communion will one day shed their humanity. Their hunger for dragon, their yearning, only worsens. Until the floodgates burst, unleashing eternal torment. The strength of a mighty dragon. Magnificent, but deadly. It's no surprise that Dragon Communion is ruinous." And Drake Knights are said to "From birth, drake knights speak not a word. They spend their lives pursuing the strength of dragons, for its sublime beauty and inspiration of awe."

I highly doubt this is rykards son, mainly since first off he is not a snake man, and secondly time frame wise it also doesn’t make sense since most people would say Tanith but also Tanith is very young and this person is not super young. I’m guessing he is a Demi-god of radagon (either rannela or Marika or maybe someone else) do to the red hair, which again another thing if you look at Rykard painting, it’s actually very dull colors, and you can see that as a human rykard did not have red hair.
- Anonymous
Should be "perhaps related to rykard" as that is completle speculation

Why did you decide that his name was that and that it was him. Why did you decide that the phrase
Mother, wouldst thou truly Lordship sanction, in one so bereft of light?
pronounced by himself? Please provide links.

I've seen people theorize his name comes from "mesmerize," relating back to Miquella and dreams. I don't think that's very likely. Most names in Elden Ring are of Germanic origin. And sure enough, "Messmer," or some say "Mesmer," is actually a somewhat obscure Swiss-German word meaning "servant of the church." This etymology would make a lot of sense, as Messmer mentions that his role is to incinerate everyone who has been "stripped of the Grace of Gold," so he's likely working with Golden Order in some capacity.

Seems like he is left-handed. Reminds me of Artorias, Ludwig, Raime, Burnt Ivory King. All mentioned bosses shared this trait so I wonder the reasoning behind it and if he will also be a sympathetic character.
