Stabs with ice lightning spear from above
![]() |
Frozen Lightning Spear is an Incantation in Elden Ring. Frozen Lightning Spear spell conjures a spear from above that moves forward dealing damage and leaving a trail of lightning. Updated to Patch 1.07.
Incantation that channels the power of the Dragonkin Soldiers.
Creates a spear of ice lightning and stabs it into the ground from
above. On impact, the spear will burst into trails of lightning advancing forwards.
The Dragonkin were born in the Eternal City, where they knew
no true sky, nor true lightning. Instead, ice lightning was their
weapon.

WTF even is "ice lightning"? Like how is that physically possible? Isn't lightning naturally hotter than the freezing point of water? How can lightning be frozen Fromsoft? It's driving me crazy!
- Anonymous
I don't get why this is an incantation when the dragonkin soldiers were created by sorcery users. It's also classed as a dragon cult incantation even though they had nothing to do with the capital's dragon cult...
- Anonymous
Does an INT scaling divine seal such as the Golden order Seal increase frostbite build up for this incantation?
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
I think it's really stupid that the ice lightning weapons only scale with dex/strenght, while this has a whopping 34 faith requirement. This makes it really hard to make an effective ice lightning build wich utalises all of the tools.

I always hated this incantation, but thank you to the Nov 6 comment. With how inconsistent the AoE is, it's much easier to simply use this for the initial melee range lightning spear. Then whatever hits you get from the AoE are a nice bonus, and you're never disappointed.

Such an awesome spell, wish it was a bit more consistent.
Small puddle in the terrain? Maybe the ground goes from stone to dirt in a small area? Ground *slightly* raised in one little spot?
Guess this is a melee incant now.
- Anonymous
- Looks insanely cool
- Causes frostbite
- Has big AOE
- Does big damage
The only blemish on this incantation is the inconsistent hitbox, similar to ADLS. Easily my favorite incantation.
- Anonymous
Kinda dumb that this has a high faith requirement as the ice lightning weapons dont scale with faith.

I wish it was consistent. Sometimes, it veers to the side, sometimes it spreads straight. Sometimes it goes far, sometimes it stops after 3 bolts. Sometimes it spreads in an big ark, sometimes it's almost needle thin.
- Anonymous
If you use dragon communion seal to cast this thing, does the arcane scaling increasing the frost build up?

The secret perk of this incant is that it has some immense vertical range when throwing it downwards over a ledge, and you won't throw yourself off of ledges when using it. Great to deal with enemies directly below you where most other attacks would struggle to hit or send you flying off a ledge inadvertently.
- Anonymous
after making a dedicated lightning empress build, it's a good incantation, however for a whopping 29fp which is reduced from original cost, and had frostbite buildup boosted as well, 120 frostbite just isn't enough for a 29fp incantation, i get it hits multiple times on bigger enemies but against radahn or morgott it's 6 casts or so to proc it once assuming more than one strike hits, for a 34 faith, 29fp incantation it should do considerably more frostbit buildup than a single powerstanced frost dagger attack

Despite the cone of lightning strikes you should think of this as a melee attack, primarily. Devastatingly strong if you can land the initial stab on target with the extra lightning more of a bonus in case you miss or happen to have a crowd of enemies behind them. While more cumbersome than just spamming hoarfrost stomp, it does big damage and gives pure faith casters a way to apply frostbite without the slow and expensive dragon breath.
As of now, having a low framerate still makes this spell not function.
- Anonymous
Ive never ever seen someone successfuly hiting someone else with this thing. Not only it is delayed but the outward cone is not wide enough so you have plenty of time do get away. It is very effective against large bosses however, most of them are not resistant to lightning or Frostbite

This is overall a better decent and useful Lightning Spell compared to Lanseaxx's Glaive i'd say.... Has more upfrontal range , the Width increases mostly when you cast it decently not as Close or Far but at a Medium Range between yourself and your enemies. ( As for damage it does deal multiple hits towards most Large and Giant Bosses or Enemies ). Plus Frost Proc is easy with this spell you only need to land 2 Casts to proc Frostbite , and you get more overall damage afterwards.... I say 8/10 Lightning Spell for sure. ( They buffed the Frame increase of this Spell when you cast it , its abit faster while you can Roll immediately after striking the Spear on-ground ). Its also an overall better Spell for PvP when you learn how to use it without Locking-on targets.

This spell feels like it should have high int scaling and a small faith requirement

I think this incantation doesn’t fall off into late and end game. It does crazy frost build up and is quicker to cast than ancient dragons lightning strike. It’s also a lot quicker to cast than Ancient Dragons. Don’t sleep on this, it’s also a good role catcher in Dulles if you catch someone up close and force them to either run, and get caught by the outward strikes. Thumbs up!
- Anonymous
This does great damage on bosses that I've used it against, and sometimes clustered enemies. I love it, don't regret the effort to go after it at all (admittedly it wasn't much but still). People who try to use it like Ancient Dragon's or Fortissax's Lightning Spear incantations are using it wrong and will be disappointed because it doesn't work the same way.
- Anonymous
it sucks that this is such a stat hog. can't do a pure ice lightning build without an atrocious stat spread
- Anonymous
Kind of wish the Gravel Stone seal had dex/fth scaling, and the frost + red lightning weapons removed the str requirement and added some faith scaling so that all lightning-based weps/incants could be dex/fth... I mean, since frost lightning is different from yellow/red, maybe give them a different scaling, perhaps treat it like Gravity where you instead need small investment in faith to give it good use (since the sword and halberd have a pretty good base damage on the buff anyways).
Unrelated: Since I bring up changing stat scaling, give all Holy Incantations pure faith since none of the Holy weapons have int scaling anyways, thanks.
- Anonymous
I have no idea why people are saying this is crap, but JUST to spite you guys, I used ONLY this spell to defeat Fortisaxx the Lichdragon. And you know what? I got it on my third try.
- Anonymous
holy damage users, have you tried using frostbite on the endgame bosses to see how much it reduces their holy defense? if it's by a lot, that might make this incant a must for holy builds.
- Anonymous
I've only just got this and I wasn't expecting too much from it after reading some of the comments here, but I've just killed one of those op giant lobster things in two casts.
- Anonymous
This incantation is why I'm there now, after reading the comments though I don't think its worth the bother of killing the boss that drops it.
I think this deserved to be an INT/FTH spell but, oh well...

- Anonymous
if im going to cosplay gael, this incant gets to join the party.
- Anonymous
Those saying this spell is bad are put of their mind. If you land the initial slam and followup lightning on an enemy you can get upwards of 1800 damage depending on your FTH and choice of seal. They sped the animation up considerably and added a fair amount of poise also. For FP consumed vs damage ratio, this is a pretty efficient spell.
- Anonymous
When I cast this, it has me plunge the spear into the ground, and it would do damage then (usually around 500ish) in the area right around where I'd stabbed. But then sometimes, the trail of lightning shows up once or twice in seemingly random spots. It never reliably sends out a wave of lightning strikes.
I really want to like this spell, but frankly it sucks, I switched to Lansseax's Glaive as it can reliably hit through walls with predictable AOE, (great for ambushing Imps)
FYI if anyone is frustrated by a Powerful regular Mob in the game, start Hunting it. Figure out what it's weak to and when you see it you'll be relaxed about it.
I hunt Royal Revenants all the time now. From software needs to Either make this a Straight upgrade to Lightning Spear, with maybe a but grater range (same spell but Frost Lightning Spear). Or seriously buff it, it has zero poise and is slow as mud.

I really can't get this to work. I'm not sure how to make it do anything.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
I wish this had a follow-up attack so i could chain it with other spells
- Anonymous
This spell needs better tracking. maybe the wind up is a little slow- but where this thing suffers is the fact that when you try to adjust your trajectory, your turning in such a slow manner, that its completely useless.
- Anonymous
I found this spell really shines for the very large(long) bosses like Regal Ancestor Spirit. Their body engulfs most of the path of the spell and they get hit by almost every bolt. Regal Ancestor Spirit was pretty much done in 2 casts.
Coolest lightning spell imo. I'd looove to see more ice lightning incants. I take this one always with me. It's part of every incant build I've made. Love this thing so hard
- Anonymous
This page says it inflicts 90 frostbite but i have never seen it proc. Can some one confirm it does frostbite
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Spell is good and has a very nice niche within the relatively large range of Dragon Cult incants.
It has good damage with initial throw and good AoE afterwards. It definitely shines against either very big enemies or groups of smaller ones. The only other long range AoE would be best dragon girls Lightning Glaive.
Downside of this spell are
1. The Frost build up is a bit low. 90 sounds good but tbh I have never seen this spell proc frost outside of giant bosses. Maybe that's intantional, but I still don't like that.
2. The AoE comes out a little to slow. Would be a little better if thr delay was only half as long.
Anyways, really cool spell, nice damage, Poise, Okey FP cost and with a nice little uniqueness to it.
If you enjoy lightning builds, definitely give this one a try!
- Anonymous
coolest **** i've ever done in a game using this incantation's jump to dodge an attack from that one double tree spirit boss and then killing them with the aoe blast
- Anonymous
It's decent with the super armor but the delay after striking the ground should be removed completely. Then the speed would be appropriate.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
I believe this spell always follows the same travel path, at least on flat ground. This means that if you know it's length and such, you can always pinpoint where it is going to land and create consistent followups.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
The range on this is kinda weird it either feels or short or extends very far in some arenas like the caelid apostle fight
- Anonymous
ITS BUFFED BOYS, THE RULE OF COOL IS NOW NOT THE ONLY THING GOING FOR THE BLUE LIGHTING
- Anonymous
A great spell made better with recent patch, def feel the increased cast speed.
- Anonymous
can we just stop stabbing a cool lightning spear right under your feet like an 8 years old throwing a tantrum? THROW the cool lightning ffs
- Anonymous
The damage is ok but the cast time is a bit long without poise and the hitbox is kinda weird. There seems to be some small gaps between instances of lightning bolts where enemies won’t get hit. It’s also easy to miss the shot completely when the enemies are up close to your face. Wish there’s a explosion effect from the initial hit that can hit enemies in a small radius to solve this issue.
- Anonymous
It's an OK spell for PVE, but it looks so ****** cool I can't stop doing it.
- Anonymous
Fantastic spell for PVP. Don't lock on. Sometimes gets stuck on uneven terrain since it runs along the ground.
- Anonymous
So this incantation only runs along the ground, even though the animation goes into the air. This makes no sense given that the lightning is coming DOWN. Tested on great dragonflies that were head level with character, lightning goes through them, no damage.
- Anonymous
this incantation in combination with normal lightning spear and ancient dragon’s lightning strike is an absolute monster in pve and pvp
- Anonymous
I hope we get more ice lighting incantations in the future
- Anonymous
This is one of the most consistent of the higher level lightning spears, at least in my experience so far. The cone that gets cast in front of you is wide enough to catch 3-4 mobs as you close in for melee and long enough to get even more if you place it right. It will also get multiple hits on bigger enemies and the damage isn't half bad. It looks like it even builds up and procs frostbite. You'll need to pick your time and place because the cast animation takes a bit but it's not overly long, maybe 2-3 seconds.
- Anonymous
From the stake to the aoe this can multi hit.. and being aoe hit multiple targets too.. and it slaps.. let's face it lightning (aside from base spear, honed bolt is trash) is mid to melee range this go round... Don't be fooled though this is very good and can hit very hard
- Anonymous
Of all the AoE based lightning spells this one feels the most consistent to me, once you have the timing down you can easily land the initial spear on target and then the speed pattern after just feels the most optimal on most bosses and mobs compared to the others. Usually land a couple of the aftereffect lightning strikes. Plus it’s blue and looks cool lol.
- Anonymous
Probably still my favourite lightning AoE spell, seems to land the most consistently out of them all with its pattern spread on large targets. With proper timing it’s not that hard to hit things with the inital spear either.
- Anonymous
This spell is worthless. Honestly Lightning Spear and Horned Lightning are the only good and practical lightning spells until you get the Dragon Cult book in Farum Azula lol. You may as well use Godslayer stuff instead as you get it in Stormveil and Godslayer Seal will be better with other stuff like Wrath of Gold and the giant stunlocking fireball I forget the name of.
- Anonymous
Great incantation, hits bosses multiple times and can apply frostbite. Ideally you use it melee range to get initial stab but it still is a ranged cone option.
- Anonymous
This is one of the flashiest spells in the game, and it actually does more damage than other "posy" lightning spells (the red ones). The thing is that the way it works now, without any added poise whatsoever, makes you very vulnerable while casting. Jumping helps, and you can actually stand still in the air during the cast. And the concept is that the lightning spear you throw to the ground generates a radius of lightning charge (in a cone in front of you) that will hit EVERYTHING within it at the moment of impact. That means that it's more useful against large bodies enemies, like dragons, since it will actually hit all of the lightning sparks at the same enemy, doing insane damage (and likely procing frostbite). It can be very strong as AoE against mobs too, but it takes some set up (either them being anaware beforehand or doing some poise-breaking stuff like Elden Stars). By the way, Elden Stars followed by this makes you the flashiest caster of all time haha
- Anonymous
Yeah can confirm it is a pretty **** spell. No poise. With gravestone 41 faith barely did 1k damage and that is on the large lava lizard. Could be that it's resistant to frost or the lightning but it just doesn't cut the fat for me.
- Anonymous
This incantation is better then both red lightning spear incantions imo
- Anonymous
Pretty good in early game, but useless in late, because of all your enemies too fast for that and just charge from affected area .
- Anonymous
How do sorceries oneshot a whole boss and most incants are super garbage. You have to be melee range, you have to charge 12min and then you get the damage of two attacks that take 1ms. nice ...
- Anonymous
Like most other incantations, especially ones that look powerful; is made obsolete by Lightning Spear and R1 on any weapon.
- Anonymous
Looks flashy, and pretty good against large enemies. But generally inconsistent with landing hits and damage values, it also leaves you very vulnerable in the air during cast.
- Anonymous
This does apply frostbite, tested on the land octopus enemies south of Northern Liurnia Lake Shore grace. Try is out for yourself, it will usually proc after just 1 cast and with lucky lightning bolt strikes will hit for 3k + damage (tested with 40 faith and Godslayers Seal +20)
- Anonymous
Deals 850 dmg most of time with maxed gravel seal and 80 faith. Sometimes if lucky around 2k. Other times all the lightning will miss >< (on normal sized enemies)
the jumping animation allows to cast it while air dodging ground based attacks (useful against godfrey's stomp for instance)
- Anonymous
Dont let the naysayers fool you, with a high faith stat this is one of the best AOE damage incantations in the game.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
looks cool but is poopy, fully-charged (at 40 faith on a +18 finger-seal) it does less damage than a light-swing from my godskin peeler +17, unbuffed, and it also doesn't apply frostbite to bosses
may have been testing on an ice-resistant boss but I assume magma wyrms have pretty much all the other bases covered in terms of absorption so I doubt it
- Anonymous
It does seem to build up frost, but my guess is by a pretty small margin. I can't seem to get it to proc on much of anything. I did get it to proc on one enemy with a single use though once, sadly I forget what enemy that was. I think they just happened to have no 'Robustness'. Most stuff seems to die before it can proc. Bosses tend to be too aggressive to get multiple uses off to proc it. But it technically does apply frost buildup.

I wish there were more Frozen Lightning spells, especially a ranged version :(
Looks so ****ing cool

- Anonymous
Can't wait to meet the faith requirement. I have a feeling that I'll abuse this spell.
- Anonymous
This spell can hit multiple times on large creatures like dragons.
I've seen 4.5k damage numbers via multiple hits. Seems consistent to hit 2-3 times.
- Anonymous
Why does it need faith? If the dragonkin where poor copies of real dragons and were created in an entirely different context, WHY WOULD THEIR MAGIC NEED FAITH IF THEY WEREN'T REAL DRAGONS?
- Anonymous
Let's hope they expand on ice lightning in the dlc, I think the most unique elemental classes of magic deserve some love.
