Equip Load

Type Base Stat
Effect Affects your ability to perform dodge rolls.
Affected by Endurance

Equip Load is one of the Stats in Elden Ring. Stats refer to various properties that govern your character's strengths and weaknesses, as well as how they are affected by interactions in and out of combat. Equip Load determines your mobility based on the total weight of your currently equipped Armaments, Armor, and Talismans, affecting your ability to take evasive actions, depending on the amount of load. It is one of the Base Stats which are directly affected by a player's Main Attribute distribution. Stats such as Equip Load are an important aspect of character progression in Elden Ring.

Elden Ring Equip Load Guide

  • Equip Load is a Base Stat that directly affects a character's ability to move and take evasive action. Specifically, Equip Load affects your ability to perform dodge rolls and backsteps.
  • Equip Load is represented in the Status Screen as two numbers in a fraction. The number on the left determines the total weight of your currently equipped Weapons, Armor, and Talismans, while the number on the right indicates your Maximum Equip Load, which is directly affected by your Endurance stat.
  • Higher total weight equipped increases Fall Damage by a small amount at high Equip Load.
  • Backstep recovery time only affects the time it takes to start moving normally after backstepping or to backstep repeatedly, not the time it takes to do a Lunge Attack.
  • Rolls and backsteps always cost 12 Stamina regardless of Equip Load.
Weight Ratio % Status Effect
≤ 29.9% Light Load Roll has 13 iFrames and 8 recovery frames on 30 FPS. Further roll distance and quicker backstep recovery than normal Equip Load.
30.0% – 69.9% Med. Load Roll has 13 iFrames and 8 recovery frames on 30 FPS.
70.0% – 99.9% Heavy Load

Roll has 12 iFrames and 16 recovery frames on 30 FPS. Longer roll and backstep recovery than normal Equip Load. Stamina regeneration rate is penalized by about 20%.

≥ 100.0% Overloaded Unable to perform rolls or backsteps. Standard movement becomes slow and cumbersome.

How to Increase Maximum Equip Load in Elden Ring

  • A player's maximum Equip Load can be increased by adding points to Endurance.
  • Endurance is one of the 8 Main Attributes that players can spend Runes on to level up.
  • The ability to level up is unlocked shortly after meeting Melina for the first time near the beginning of the game.
  • Leveling up can be done at any Sites of Grace once unlocked.
  • The amount of Runes required to raise an Attribute increases with each character Level.
  • Runes are obtained primarily by defeating Enemies and Bosses. Certain consumables such as the Fringefolk's Rune can also be used to gain a fixed number of runes.

RELATED EQUIPMENT & ITEMS in Elden Ring for EQUIP LOAD

You can use the following Equipment and Items to increase your Equip Load:

ELDEN RING EQUIP LOAD NOTES & TIPS

  • The maximum obtainable Equip Load is 205.6 and is reached when a character with 99 Endurance equips Great-Jar's Arsenal
and Erdtree's Favor +2. This means the highest load you can carry while still maintaining the fastest rolls is 61.4.
This can be temporarily increased even further to 925.3 when drinking a Flask of Wondrous Physick with a Winged Crystal Tear.
  • Elden Ring's Equip Load does not come into play while mounted; using the Spirit Steed will bypass any movement restrictions.
  • Additionally, Stamina is not consumed out of combat, so players can sprint indefinitely while exploring.
  • Fall Damage is increased starting at 70% Equip Load. At 100% Equip Load, you'll take 10% more damage from falls, up to 30% at 150% Equip Load

Equip Load Increase by Endurance Level

  • The soft caps are 25 and 60.
  • The formulas for calculating Equip Load are as follows:
    • Level 1 - 25 --> 45 + 27*((Lvl - 8) / 17)
    • Level 26 - 60 --> 72 + 48*(((Lvl - 25) / 35)^1.1)
    • Level 61 - 99 --> 120 + 40*((Lvl - 60) / 39)
    • Only the first decimal point is kept.

well ****, I'm starting to regret going light for 40+ levels -_- really disappointed there isn't a bigger difference. I wonder if it would be too OP to make light armor function like quickstep?

      • Anonymous

This is dumb. What's the point of light load when med load is exactly the same but you get to be tankier? The roll distance isn't increased that much compared to ds3 where light load was pog.

        • Anonymous

Hi does anyone know that with the same load range, lighter load will have longer rolling distance or not?
For example, 10% load and 20% load will have different rolling distance (both in light load)?

          • Anonymous

I have a poor boy mechanic for swapping to my colossal weapons. Sort gear by attack power, insta scroll to bottom of list by tapping up once, boom. Now if you can't equip it without going heavy even by itself then you're just gonna have to suck it up and roll like my fat self irl

wow, 925.3 eh! I can't wait to find out when we get the DLC where you could possibly reach this Outer God level equipment loading

              • Anonymous

You can get away with being very mobile at high equip loads by using Torrent. This will let you ride around at normal speed without getting slowed down.

Minor point but it seems like the light roll threshold is ≤30% and not ≤29.9% as stated. I have 48.0 equip load, 160.0 maximum equip load and I'm in light load, that's exactly 30%.

                  • Anonymous

Has anyone tested light load sprint speed?

I notice that if I go from medium load to light load, my characters footsteps are faster.

                    • Anonymous

END should increase equip load less (maybe just a flat 1 for each level, or less) and STR should’ve given a small increase of ~0.4

makes no sense that fast dex builds get to have the same passive poise as slow strength builds

                      • "The soft caps are 25 and 60" Lmao, No. The Soft-Cap is 25, the Hard-Cap is 60 and the Cap is 99. To use words appropriately you need to understand what they mean. You can't have several Soft-Caps because then they're not "Soft-Caps" at all. Is like saying "This thing has 3 halves", is an oxymoron.

                        • Anonymous

Light load deserves an extra iframe, faster movement speed, SOMETHING. You're gonna sacrifice good armor and multiple weapons on your quickbar for a slightly farther roll distance?

I want light load to be good so bad...

                          • Anonymous

I believe high equip load makes Torrent's after sprint running time last less, starting its walking speed earlier. ¿Can someone confirm this?

As of patch 1.04, Endurance and Mind were buffed at lower levels. I unequipped all of my items and went to Rennala to respec. My character is a Vagabond, so the chart starts from 11 Endurance. I manually calculated the "increase from previous level", so apologies if there are mistakes:

                              • Light load gives you slightly faster movement speed, which is where the value is. It’s barely noticeable until you start actually playing with light load. In a game where spacing is so important, that little bit extra speed often means the difference between avoiding an attack or getting hit. But it’s all dependent on play style, so results greatly vary.

in the first playthrough is fine, because you sacrifice endurance for other stats but everything makes a difference, but i feel like when you get high level and you are a mage or a dexterity you are obbligated to use those heavy equipments even though you dont want to...

                                  • Tested light load rolls and backsteps plus heavy backsteps, updated info. A light load gives you slightly longer rolls in terms of distance covered and the recovery time after a backstep is ever so slightly reduced, as far as I could tell. Heavy backsteps have much longer recovery time.

I cant believe the iframes for this game is lower on medium roll than light roll without they communicate to the player visually like in ds 1.

Is there any way to make a graph similar to your "endurance investment" graph that shows you what your optimal endurance level needs to be to meet the mid roll requirements of your load out?

For example if your equip weight is like 67 then your endurance level needs to be 40 and so on?

I think that could be very useful.

So, somebody cooked up a script and mined some of the iframes. It’s on the Reddit. Their findings were that standard and light rolls had the same iFrames, and fat rolls had ever so slightly less (like, 25 compared to 26-27). The kicker was that light rolls had significantly fewer startup frames, and fat rolls had significantly increased end frames. The startup difference in light rolls might explain the people who are claiming light rolls cover more ground over time than medium rolls.

Ok so i've watched every video possible and read many posts on this, so basically, there REALLY isn't any difference between light and medium roll, only 10% distance on rolls, and quicker backstep (not like anyone uses this anyway) Other than that there is no difference in iframe which is sad, cause why would you put on very light armor and take extra dmg when all you get for it is 10% distance on your rolls, that's some stupid garbage right there.

Spend around 1 hour for testing. So, fast rolls, a bit longer, try do 10-15 rolls in a row and u'll see difference, it's about 10% distance.
Fast rolls animation a bit faster, try do 10-15 rolls in a row with time secured, difference the same, about 10%
About iframes, not so sure, but i think, fast rolls have same iframes, but a little faster recovery time - time when u still in roll animation, but alredy without iframes.

Either 70% for medium load is not exact, or amounts are rounded.

I have 62.3 equip load. 70% of 62.3 is 43.61, however, with 43.6 equipped, it's heavy. 43.5 is fine though.

Light equip also effects jumping backwards (tap dodge button while not moving). I tested with 44 back jumps , the light equip reached the destination 3 seconds earlier.

There is a good way to see the difference between light roll distance and medium roll distance yourself. Go to mountain top of giants, with light equip walk/jog in to the diagonal of the a telescope, then roll forward in to the telescope , then roll again the other direction (it seems to buffer input). You will see your foot prints. Now repeat with medium roll and you will see the difference is a bit less then length of your own foot. Repeat several times until the original footprint disappears , i was not able to reach the fast roll distance.

"Fast Rolls Light State: Standard roll. No difference in stamina recovery, animation, distance, nor stamina usage from medium load. Iframes needs further testing."

The distance part is not true. I tested roll distance with medium and light equip load while starting at the same spot and I could see that the roll made it a further distance with the light equip load. It was a very small difference and may not be worth the extra armor you'd lose, but it's there.

Fast roll gives you a much farther dodge roll from side to side when locked on. Not sure if you get more I-frames, but you get much more distance

After noticing that your walk/run animation changes depending on your equipment load, I did a little testing and your move speed seems increase with a light load, and decrease with a heavy load.
Not by a huge amount; maybe somewhere in the range of 10%.
I tested it by going to a Grace next to a patrolling enemy, and seeing how far from the start it would be by the time I ran to it.
Swapping load back and further, it was consistently further along with a heavy load and nearer with a light load.

I also test sneaking without crouching like someone else mentioned, but load seemed to have no effect on that. I was always spotted from behind at the same distance.

                                                                • It would be interesting, if anyone has the means, to investigate if there is any benefit to light armor other than the stealth aspect. Stamina regeneration, i-frames, something. Being that likely everyone will be putting points into endurance, it would surprise me for lighter armor to be relatively useless.

                                                                  • Anonymous

I just saw a video comparing spped and distance of medium and light roll and they were the exact same. So currently there isn't any proven benefit of light equipment load yet? Seen some people mentioning iframes, but has this been tested yet? Currently seems no difference.

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

I'm wearing bandit mask, rest of my armor is astrologer gear, meteorite staff, falchion, carrian knights shield, graven school talisman, great-jars arsenal, and green turtle talisman. I'm at 30.0 / 100.1 equip load. Isn't that above 29.9%? I should be med load but the game is showing light load.

                                                                        • Anonymous

I feel like equip load is useless in this gsme because i can't eve wear some big gear even though i have like 80 equip load, somehow 50 is heavy? I generally don't understand what's the point.

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                              • Anonymous

no more feeling like im wasting levels in vigor

                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                    • Anonymous

Erdtree's Favor +1 gives 6.3-6.5% weight (hard to nail down exactly)

                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                            • Anonymous

Equip load is most likely tied to endurance as the offical overview trailer shows at minute 4:44 and following. It shows the menu of two players with 16 STRl, but one has 18 END with 60.9 max equip load and the other 12 with 51.4 max equip load.

                                                                                              • The paragraf with (HOW TO INCREASE CHARACTER EQUIP LOAD in Elden Ring) now is known tru the outlet's that have had hands-on playtime with the final build of the game, is changed to (Stat: ENDURANCE) instead.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

They really need to fix this, lighter, faster characters need to have an advantage, otherwise why build anything except STR characters with 69% weight and full Havel’s, Max Armor and Poise, Max I-frames, fast roll and fast stamina regen…. Just delete light armor if its going to be like this again

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

"very fast rolls that go the farthest" this is false and not true , being 69.99% are same as going full naked 0% weight , both been tested and got same distance HELL even same iframe between light and medium roll makes using light armor pointless to use and medium armor will be meta again

what even worst is if you compare between RAYA LUCARIAN SET light armor set and CRUCIBLE SET heavy armor set , the heavy armor set offer x2 protection and also double elemental/magical protection couple with the fact vitality is no longer its own stat and part of strength were 90% of playerbase are just either strength or dex build means most people easily will just repeat same thing again like dark souls 3 were light armor is trash

PS: solution makes it like DS1 or 2 were less weight you have the more iframe you get but also high damage you will take too , make it fair game , but at that point just delete light armor as whole point of light armor was to wear something to protect you abit while being low weight for more iframe , but ever since DS3 its not the case anymore or give us transmog/change appearance system to armor so we won't have to worry about our character just copypaste of same meta armor that everybody use

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

so yeah wearing light armor is pointless since it doesn't offer any good physical armor nor does it offer magical/elemental protection CRUCIBLE SET offers

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

This is disappointing. The far more meaningful and punishing equip load thresholds in Dark Souls I made character builds more thoughtful, as deciding to go heavier had serious pros and cons. Now, with a damage stat increasing maximum load AND there being almost no tangible benefits for staying super light (as opposed to Dark Souls I where fast rolling was significantly better than mid rolling and thus a more meaningful and interesting distinction), we will have a repeat situation of almost every build having no problem roll spamming with the same Iframes and distance as lighter builds.

This is truly a shame because normalization of character attributes across builds hurts immersion and variety. Heavy weapon users should have good poise and light weapon users should have great stamina and roll speed. Allowing heavy weapon users to have both almost makes lighter builds look stupid. Why wouldn't you just level STR, have huge poise, and keep your iframes the same as lightly armored assassins? I truly hope they fix this.
