Smithscript Dagger is a Throwing Blade in Elden Ring. It is a brand new Throwing Blade in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. The Smithscript Dagger scales primarily with StrengthDexterityIntelligence and Faith and is a good Weapon for __goodfor__. 

 

Dagger engraved with a smithscript. Reduced mass enhances the effects of the smithing arts, allowing this weapon to function as a throwing dagger for all attacks. Once thrown, the dagger instantly reappears in the wielder's hand.

 

Where to Find Smithscript Dagger in Elden Ring

The Smithscript Dagger weapon can be found at the following location:

  • Ruined Forge Lava Intake. Take the first ladder down, past the golem, and after the fire blob turn right. As soon as you enter the room past the Fire Blob, slightly to the left. You can also drop down to this area from the lever's location.       No decent damage, no stagger, terrible range and there is only one of them despite being called a new weapon type very lazy glad I didn't get the dlc and just tested it with my freind who did (feel bad he wasted his money on trash). Never pre order people it's just a scam.

      • Did some testing regarding the "Arrow's" talismans. The reason Soaring Sting increases the damage is because of the increased range, the actual damage bonus doesnt apply. Arrow's Sting talisman doesn't benefit these at all, but Arrow's Reach talisman will give the same damage increase as Soaring Sting does. Therefore if you're not building around bows, you're better off using Arrow's Reach because it's lighter than Soaring Sting and provides the same benefits to the dagger.

          Very tricky to wield properly, and I feel like they're a bit undertuned - low damage is fine, low range makes sense, but combined it feels a little much. I'd love if either damage OR range were buffed slightly...and even then, their poise damage (other than their weirdly-high rate of headshots) is atrocious.

          That said, they're still fun, using them feels like a faster, low-maintenance version of light bows, and when they DO work, it feels awesome. I still need to test them as offhand weapons...

            I see a lot of people upset with the range and while I do agree, in fairness it is still the longest range of any non-ammunition armament in the game. Easily taking the crown from whips. Try to keep that in mind while you're learning to use them! Don't take a smithscript weapon expecting it to replace bows, crossbows or sorceries.

              Really fun to use. Viable, but a bit below average tier. I’m currently using them in meta level invasions and you can’t be cute at meta level. I’ll have to take these to Rune level 85 or lower.

                  Everyone probably knows this, but if not... you can actually do a feint attack with this weapon, both one- and two-handed. Thou are welcome!

                    A couple of things I noted about these, you can put the parry ash of war on them, and they will be used as normal melee daggers for ripostes and backstabs.
                    Mind you this isn't terribly useful as the range on these is worse than the damage. Hopefully these get fixed soon.

                      i leveled up my ninja/blue dancer charm character specifically to use these, a 7 level investment in int/fth, and was a bit disappointed by the damage; even though they are S dex scaling when keen, it's less scaling than parrying dagger and urumi, and the base damage is just really really low. In fact at 70 dex 11 arc, a poison Great Knife has higher AR than keen smithscript dagger. but, using them reminds me of white birch bow in DS3. the trick is to outspace, backpedal, and harass with them. it's not brave, but it can be effective. moonrithyll was giving me issues because she could just input read to either dodge, or poise tank and counter hit any attack I tried, but playing keep-away with these overwhelmed her, either breaking her guard or staggering her with headshots.

                            These are actually really good put as bleed and use scattershot to bleed in pvp. The aow Will knock down ppl jump attacking and cause bleed most of the time inflicting good damage

                              people are like, it's actually really good if you use every talisman and tear and buff in the game! no kidding, what isn't?

                                People have mentioned the r2s missing, but the backstep versions of them have much better tracking for some reason lol

                                It doesn't always replace my black bow, but I keep it on more than the bow. It's more stylish, hope they buff the range. Honestly not a bad choice when I run out of estus in boss coop and I don't want to get clipped by bosses suddenly 180ing mid combo. Rather than the shard of Alexander, I might pick the spear talisman, bc this thing does counters effortlessly, counter+headshot (which is does surprisingly easily) shouldn't be underestimated

                                It used the standard parry animation rather than partying dagger, I'm not sure how that affects its frame data esp with the parry changes. I'm not used to it, but I like keeping it in my pocket, so it's a pretty versatile tool.

                                  A lot of people are trying to build around consecutive damage talismans with these, but I think that's a trap. These daggers aren't particularly fast, and the short range and low poise coupled with the way the attack animation steps you forward towards the enemy really leaves you open to attack. You have to get quite a few hits in to get the most out of Rotten Winged/Millicent's.

                                  It's better to play these as hit-and-run weapons rather than multi-hit weapons. I especially like the jump attack R2s—you can dance backwards out of range while throwing those out, and you can mix in the Piercing Throw or Scattershot ashes of war or something more melee-appropriate that works with daggers.

                                  And you really don't need the multi-hit talismans to get a similar multiplier. These get the damage bonus from the Arrow's Sting and Arrow's Soaring Sting talismans, which stack, plus the Smithing Talisman, which is +10%, +8% and +10% right from the start without needing to build hits compared to Millicent's max bonus of 11% and Rotten Winged's max bonus of 13%. Then you could add in the Claw Talisman for jump attacks or a scorpion talisman, since all smithscript weapons have awesome scaling when Magic/Sacred/Flame Art.

                                  And since you already have the Arrow's Sting talismans equipped, throw in a bow or crossbow for long-range utility. If you built into Holy or Magic damage, then something like the Full Moon Crossbow or Erdtree Bow suddenly becomes kind of viable.

                                    First, the downsides. The aim issue is frustrating, and needs to be fixed, and the range on these things is really short. Also free aiming them is incredibly hard, especially with the aim issue, so hitting anything you can't lock on to is a huge pain (like undead that have collapsed)
                                    However, they can be incredibly good if used the right way. Jumping, backstepping, and rolling attacks come out extremely quickly, allowing for an almost unbroken chain of attacks while still dodging. Combined with the Prosthesis and sword insignia talismans, and the thorny cracked tear, you can get some truly incredible DPS. Because you are able to attack from (modest) range, you can safely maintain the multi-hit buff for a very long time. I was able to shred the Snowfield runebear in just a couple seconds with 80 faith and a flame infusion.
                                    The Smithing talisman works for all attacks. The Arrow's Sting, Arrow's Reach, and Arrow's Soaring Sting talismans do nothing at all, I tested this extensively, falloff damage is unchanged and no additional damage is added. Yes, this weapon has falloff damage, but the total range of the thing is so short that it barely matters. Other talismans all seem to work as expected.
                                    The impaling throw AOW is just ok, very good against anything with a shield of course. The scattershot AOW is excellent, when used you will throw a fan of daggers with EACH hand if two-handing, meaning very close enemies can get hit twice by the attack, doing some pretty substantial damage, and the double fans cover a nice area and can clear out groups of enemies easily.
                                    Basically, if you've ever seen the incredible power of a dual wield dagger multi-hit build, this is that but with a dozen times the range. Also the jump attacks seem to do substantially more damage than standing attacks. Combine it with Claw talisman and either of the jump attack armors for excellent damage, as long as your stamina holds out.
                                    Also hilarious on dragons, because you can lock on to the head and get an endless chain of headshots, it makes them look like a bobblehead doll. You can also get headshots on any other enemy, of course. It helps if you use a jump attack while close to them.

                                      Sacred + Faith + talisman, not to mention Vow + Flask gave a large damage increase to this weapon which escalate the tier from trash-> auxiliary stat ash spam up to your main. At this point i won't change to another weapon since i bet i can beat last DLC boss easily with this pair of flying pencil

                                        Now I'm not saying it is particularly good, but if you stack all of the consecutive attack talismans/crystal tear, Smithscript Talisman, and an elemental infusion at 80 of the respective stat, the damage starts to ramp up very hard. Once you are at maxed out damage from consecutive damage you will be hitting for 1000 on your displayed AR. Obviously it is split damage, so it isn't realistically that high, but it still blows my mind how much more viable it is than at first glance. This is a genuinely fun weapon, and I could see them buffing it as considered pretty bad by most people now so I'm all for it.

                                            For anyone sad this does bad damage, put a magic, holy or flame art affinity on it. Smithscript weapons get a HUGE buff from those thanks to their int/fth scaling applying to botht he elemental AND physical damage, so it makes this hits almost as hard as a normal weapon. Whcih isn't necessarily good when other smithscripts hit like nukes doing the same thing, but it IS enough to make this viable and fun to play with, even if not powerful.

                                              Not the best side arm but it does have one pretty solid use on horseback. If you want just a bit more range than a melee weapon (not much) these are pretty accurate when riding torrent. The range is just still a bit too short for my liking in general though.

                                                    I did some testing and Arrow's Reach Talisman will affect this. There's some slight but noticeable damage falloff for this at max range, but you will do ~10% more damage at these ranges when using the Arrow's Reach Talisman. The new version combining reach+sting works for the same purpose. Arrow's Sting however has no effect on damage. This weapon doesn't deal terrible damage, but you really have to dedicate all of your talisman slots to make this shine. As mentioned Arrow's Reach can help, my personal setup is Millicent's Prosthesis, Rotten Winged Sword Insignia, Smithing Talisman, and Shard of Alexander. The first two are no-brainers as this weapon is extremely good at building up the attack boost stacks quickly, the smithing talisman will boost ALL attacks this weapon does by 10%, and Shard of Alexander is good because of the Scattershot Throw AoW is extremely strong, especially after building up prosthesis stacks. Another worthy candidate is the claw talisman as the jumping R2 on this weapon is it's strongest normal attack by far. Also, it seems like you probably want to aim for split damage for this like lightning or magic when infusing over heavy/keen, but I haven't tested this extensively.

                                                      The damage is poor as a main weapon, but as a sidearm to a similarly fast and aggressive weapon like a light greatsword, heavy thrusting sword, or katana, these can be a deadly little addition to your arsenal. I'd suggest imbuing them with poison or bleed since they don't deal much damage anyhow. You don't even need to status-imbue your main weapon either -- these attack fast enough you can build status without getting close or committing to slower attacks.

                                                        Literally all that it needs is range. I can live without the R2’s, they hit bigger targets fine. But the range does not coincide the speed of the animation.

                                                          as if it weren't bad enough that this is the only weapon of it's type, the range and terrible accuracy on r2s make it even worse. and to add insult to injury, you can't even buff it. there are plenty stronger options with more range than these things, and they're even infusable with stuff like bleed, so why can't I put black flame blade on it? or electrify armament, or anything for that matter? it's beyond disappointing, was really looking forward to using these and I feel very let down.

                                                                This weapon can crit, which was a welcome surprise. R2 is super bugged, it misses a lot, but it can stagger if you land a hit. Okay side armament overall, I personally use it with bloodhound/frost stop. I have to say it though, this thing is just a dagger with a gimmick, not a whole new weapon class. It isn't all that special compared to other throwing weapons in the dlc.

                                                                  This to me looks like a great option for those who want to inflict a status at a distance (like Poison or Frost) without sacrificing their primary weapon's Affinity. You have a great utility sidearm without having to rely on consumables. It's not an amazing flashy weapon, it's a highly reliable option in rough situations. Expect to see this in a lot of players who want that utility without having to commit to full on stat splitting for spells or incantations.

                                                                    strongest build for these bad boys (and other smithscript weapons) is actually pure int or fth, somewhat tragically if you want to use these as a dex rogue/assasin or whatever, as they have the erdsteel dagger situation

                                                                    that is, they have natural int and fth scaling on the physical damage portion. because of this, if you boost the int or fth scaling, say with magic infusion, you are now getting high (~B iirc) int scaling on both your magic and physical damage lines, resulting in very high total damage compared to other infusions

                                                                          I find this weapon incredibly situational, but in those niche situations, it's incredibly good. Particularly chasing down low hp opponents in pvp, having a ranged weapon on horseback and the jumping attack on low poise enemies

                                                                            Go upgrade them, two hand them, put on the scatter throw ash of war from SOTE, literally any infusion (I chose cold), rotten wing sword insig, smithing talisman, Shard of Alex, and dragon crest great shield.

                                                                            No go and absolutely stagger any and everything to death. Do research don’t ***** and moan.

                                                                              I really want to like this, but it just isn't very good. The moveset is great and it is fun to use, but It hits like a wet noodle even if you combo it with all the talismans like Rotten Winged Sword and the like. With Keen scaling, it gets an S rank in dex. Despite that, its AR caps out at around 330 or so with 80 dex. Doesn't look like Blood is a good option either since its bleed value is kept artificially low. IIRC, it only gets around 45 bleed while basically every other fast weapon gets 80+.

                                                                              Really feels like From were afraid of this thing being too strong and so decided to intentionally keep it week.Works fantastically in PVP though (especially when used as an offhand with parry AOW), I'll give it that much.

                                                                                These do enough damage for what they are, essentially an infinite ammo ranged melee weapon. They are a bit hard to use however as they don't have as much range as you'd expect and they seem to have a hard time actually hitting enemies.

                                                                                Also, is this the only one? I've scoured the entire map and haven't found another.

                                                                                          I think this would be a fun dodge/jump light attack build. Mix Raptor top +claw/rottenwing/smithing talismans and just jump and fling them.

                                                                                            Cold infusion gives A scaling in int and dex and decend frost build up becaus of the attack speed.
                                                                                            The normal r2 is weird and often misses unless you are pretty neary, but the jump r2 is your big damage, if you cann say big damage with this weapon.

                                                                                            You could also add terra magica and ranni's dark moon to further buff the damage.
                                                                                            Maybe also unseen form to be more of an assasin.

                                                                                              Am running a prisoner with high int and dex and this beast has B scaling in both int and dex with cold infusion, at +25. It's cool, it's stylish, you can parry with it, use the new crazy frost stomp, but so far it doesn't look like it's gaining traction, am not seeing anyone else (co-op or invaders) use them yet.

                                                                                                    Think this needs a patch- doesn’t accept the No Skill AoW, and when the AoW is changed, piercing throw disappears, and can’t be put back on it

                                                                                                      Nearly every attack with this weapon misses, especially the heavy attacks. You can get right up in a fat dude's face and the dagger will go right through them as if nothing happened.

                                                                                                        Put the better Hoarfrost stomp on these and you have an insane weapon, may not have as much movement as the backhand blades but they recover super fast.

                                                                                                            Ash of War is good, normal attacks are good and fast but around whip range... weirdly they keep missing just to the right of the target thought

                                                                                                              This is a very odd weapon because you can stagger enemies with head shots. This thing pairs well with the claw talisman since the jumping R2 is pretty fast.
