Shield of Night is a Small Shield in Elden Ring. It was added with the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. The Shield of Night is a Shield that scales primarily with Dexterity. Small Shields usually weigh very little and has the least form of protection from attacks. They are often used by players who prefer Parrying rather than Blocking. Its lighter weight also makes it ideal for quick, agile characters with low equipment weight capacity.
A shield awarded to Swordhands of Night, cast in a bottomless black from which no light can escape.
The outer surface is only semicorporeal, providing reliable defense against attacks that are not physical in nature.
Where to Find Shield of Night in Elden Ring
The Shield of Night can be found at the following location:
- Can be found in Bonny Gaol. The top level of this gaol can be accessed after using the jar lift near the bridge twice. You need to jump off at the bridge level, activate the switch, and then ride the jar going up. You will find this on the ledge behind the corpse on top of a table. What if you could hold the ash so you could continue to keep the shield in front of you while having it act sort of like Eternal Darkness but it deletes incoming magics. I had this idea because when you do the ability you actually get guard frames when you push the shield in front of you.

The "all small shields" section on this page is listing the greatshields instead for some reason.

i wish it gave a 25% (5% smaller than the staff of loss´ 30%) buff to night sorceries while equipped in the off-hand. i rly want to make a 3rd "swordhand" of night sorcer assassin style rp character with these items but "dual-wielding" staffs of loss is simply better when focusing on night magic

Through testing, the skill as buffed by Alexanders jar shard. NOT buffed by curved sword talisman.

I had much fun using this on duels and pve, but it feels a bit underwhelming when you start to think about the range these projectiles can travel.

Does the Curved Sword Talisman work on this shields Ash of War?

For a magic-mirror shield i like it. I DONT like the 20 foot range. Mages casting me far away and im trying to reflect like a toddler kicking rocks

I love how all of you keep demanding the shield be bigger with better boost and physical negations or whatever, but like... The Tree Sentinel Shield existed since Launch. This is just meant to serve as a more proactive tool since this can proc off of ANYTHING and having more buff support since it's magic damage at the cost of chip damage and not just a counter to spells like the reactive style Sentinel Shield's spell parry. Y'all literally have your cake and and get to eat it, but your mad it's the wrong flavor.

This thing is like a black hole that spits whatever gets trapped inside back out, but supercharged.

Skill's very fun to use, but you definitely need to build for it...mostly for the mediocre guard boost rather than the defenses, really.

Should be a medium or Greatshield, heavier with better blocking, either give actual 100 physical or just better stamina guard

In pvp with the deflect tear this is devastating when used correctly, up to 1k deflects, can be used to punish hosts and phantoms for blindly throwing a dragon breath or spamming comets. Basically gives you something resembling the old carian retaliation back.

why did they choose to make this a small shield?
it would've looked much cooler as a medium or big shield like the looking glass knight ds2,,,
more importantly, it would've given it 100 block negation and make the skill actually practical.

I'm sure Jolan served Ymir his favorite eggs benedict at supper time on this plate.

This would be so good if the damage returned was the full amount of damage received, the same type, same status build, no matter what it was. A full stop in PVP against some STRength builds and multihit builds, caster counter, everything. All of a sudden players have to get a little creative with you.
In PVE, it would be a great way for casters to trade against aggressive melee bosses and an interesting option in place of blocking or dodging normally

The single best way to deal with dragon breath spammers with deflecting tear

Correction: you don't need to jump off onto the bridge first, you can just keep standing on the lift and it'll take you up.

This could use a buff but otherwise a solid tool. Maybe just enhanced guard boost against attacks that deal elemental damage

it's so little .... i wish this was a medium shield with decent blocking stats.

If you use it without guarding first it does almost no damage. It’s worthless to use it instead of a guard counter since a guard counter is going to do more damage. I can think of only two reasons to use this shield. If you’re a caster and want something to “guard counter” with or to “guard counter” spells from afar. If you’re looking to do the latter, I’d say you’re much better off with Carian Retaliation. Parrying spells is actually super easy. This shield is extremely niche. I don’t see it getting much use.

skill should've been a parry that automatically fires the projectile if successful. the damage reduction, and the damage of the projectile, is too low to justify blocking with it.

I think the purpose of this shield is to be used against mages like Erdtree Greatshield. However, this one has lower stats requirement but poor damage negation, and likely built for just tanking magic damage while the Erdtree Shield is more universal.
It may not be a good shield, but at least it gives dex players a tool to counter int players (while str players have so many shields to use against mages).

Alright so I tested some things. Despite making the guard counter sound when performing the skill right after blocking the weapon art damage is NOT boosted by the Curved Sword Talisman, nor by the Deflecting Hardtear. You also cannot trigger the weapon art counter by equipping Shield of Night in your right hand and blocking with another shield in your left hand. I also tried Arrow's Sting and 2-handing the shield with Two-handed Sword Talisman to no avail. Unfortunately due to being a somber/split damage weapon you also cannot apply Scholar's armament to it. Scholar's Shield and Shield Grease works fine. It IS however boosted by the Spellblade set. The weapon art deals magic damage exclusively after all. As you might've already guessed it is also boosted by Shard of Alexander, Magic Scorpion Charm, Magic Cracked Tear, Terra Magica and universal buffs like Sword/Crusade Insignia and Bloodsucking Cracked Tear. The physical and non-physical damage portion of the this scales exclusively with DEX, weapon art included. Weapon art damage scales surprisingly well with D-scaling in DEX.
Damage tested on Stormveil living jars
80 DEX with no buffs
- Regular: 353 Counter: 1074
80 DEX Shard of Alexander
- Regular: 406 Counter: 1235
80 DEX Alexander + Magic Scorpion + Spellblade + Magic Cracked Tear + Terra Magica
-Regular:722 Counter: 2193
And just for funsies
80 DEX Alexander + Magic Scorpion + Spellblade + Magic Cracked Tear + Bloodsucking Cracked Tear + Terra Magica + Jellyfish Shield + Crusade Insignia
- Regular: 1121 Counter:3404
With the already high magic negation it works well for countering mages. Add shield grease/Scholar's shield and greatshield talisman and it works okay against regular enemies as well. Deflecting Hardtear reduces damage and stamina loss but does not increase damage of the weapon art's counter. From what I can tell it deals next to no stance damage when compared to other guard counters and bigger enemies won't even flinch. All in all this is meant to be a long range guard counter alternative. If it had decent holy/lightning protection i'd consider it for my spellblade build. As it is now it's more of a niche.

Seems like this would pair well with the deflecting hardtear
- Anonymous
you can make this viable with scholars armament and greatshield talisman if you really wanted to make a shield build
A few questions about it: What's the damage type of the AoW? Do buffs on the shield apply to the AoW? And finally, does the spontaneous guard tear improve the damage of it?

Mirror Force but single target. You can reflect Sorc., Faith and Physical attacks.

So it's discount Erdtree Greatshield, but with low requirements and no need to time the counter?
- Anonymous
I understand that it's a different shield size class, but for 1.5 extra weight the Silver Mirrorshield has better magic blocking (89% vs 70%), better guard boost (49 vs 39), blocks 100% of physical damage (versus the horrid 55% this has), and it has more lenient stat requirements for a wretch character (only 2 levels in STR from baseline versus 8 in INT). Silver Mirrorshield also has No Skill, so you can your weapon's ashes of war with it equipped.
This thing certainly is cool looking but I don't really understand its intended use case when a direct upgrade exists for its supposed niche of blocking magic. If it were meant to be a "anything but physical" shield that would also be interesting, but 45% blocking is low enough that you should just be dodging instead of using this.

How works exactly the counter part of Revenge of the Night ?

Not sure why this scales dex, considering dex users already get access to lightning infusions & fire damage from spark aromatics, not to mention the numerous holy weapons that scale primarily dex.. Does dex really need every single damage type?

I got really excited when I found this and upgraded it to max only to find it is pathetically weak fml
