Stone-Sheathed Sword is a Straight Sword in Elden Ring. It is a brand new Straight Sword in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. The Stone-Sheathed Sword scales primarily with Strength and Dexterity and is a good Weapon for __goodfor__.
A sword that none can pull from its scabbard of cracked stone. Relic of a lost civilization from a time long past, said to have served a ritual purpose at altars of light and darkness.
Where to Find Stone-Sheathed Sword in Elden Ring
The Stone-Sheathed Sword weapon can be found at the following location:
- Can be acquired at one of the 3 Altar locations: Fog Rift Catacombs (on top of the 3 trap platforms and run to the furthest right corner), Ruins of Unte (flowery courtyard), or Ancient Ruins of Rauh (on a tower connected by an invisible floor). [See Shadow of the Erdtree Map] [Video Link]
- If you already have the sword, you can transform it to Sword of Darkness or Sword of Light.
- The Stone-Sheathed Sword will be permanently lost if it is converted into the Sword of Darkness or Sword of Light. The only way to acquire another example of the weapon is via NG+.
Elden Ring Stone-Sheathed Sword Notes & Tips
- Weapon Skill: Square Off
- This weapon cannot be infused with Ashes of War
- Stone-Sheathed Sword can be upgraded by using Somber Smithing Stones
- It is recommended to acquire the Stone-Sheathed Sword from the Fog Rift Catacombs, as the labyrinthine nature of the dungeon makes it ill-suited for repeated visits should players wish to change the Sword to either its light or dark variants.
- An upgraded Stone-Sheathed Sword will carry over its levels if it is converted into its variants, e.g. converting a +10 Stone-Sheathed Sword will result in the player receiving a +10 Sword of Darkness or a +10 Sword of Light.

This and its unsheathed variants are the cut sword that was found in the files alongside a cut questline, and also the same model as the sword war monuments

when I first got this I started hitting it against a wall for a few minutes thinking it was the new santiers spear lmao

Can confirm. It can be converted from dark to light or light to dark. If u don't like the one u can choose the other didn't lock me out on repeated alter attempt

Where you acquire the Stone-Sheathed Sword will change which altars transform it. It can transform into the Sword of Light at either the Ancient Ruins of Rauh Tower or at the Ruins of Unte. It can transform into the Sword of Darkness at either the Ruins of Unte or the Fog-Rift Catacombs. This also applies for transforming the Sword of Light/Sword of Darkness into each other. There are two possible altars for each transformation because the first altar you interact with is where you pick up the sword - and for the rest of the playthrough, that altar is rendered completely inert. You can't use it to transform the sword. For example, if you picked up the Stone-Sheathed Sword at the Fog-Rift Catacombs, you have to go to Ruins of Unte for the Sword of Darkness or the Rauh Tower for the Sword of Light. Conversely, if you pick up the Stone-Sheathed Sword at the Rauh Tower, you have to go to the Ruins of Unte for the Sword of Light and the Fog-Rift Catacombs for the Sword of Darkness. If you picked it up at the Ruins of Unte, it's fairly self-explanatory.

Link to strike damage incorrectly links to Strike+Damge instead of Strike+Damage. I can't fix it as a guest, but I wanted to point it out.

This weapon is pretty cool kept as sheathed with strike damage and square off and not to mention it looks cool as hell but was hoping it had the charged thrust attack and the rolling thrust attack which it doesn't and if it could be buffed with consumables like the bloodhound knight sword which is also a somber weapon. Not a deal breaker but still.

I upgraded this to +10, and then accidentally changed it to a useless faith sword. Can I turn it back to stone again?
- Anonymous
Ah I would've actually preferred for this to be sheathed, that strike damage would do wonders on Radagon...

Square off with strike??? You know what, enjoy the light and darkness swords, I’m sticking with this
- Anonymous
why they put a head on it like that?? looks like a flesh sword D:

You can turn the Sword of Night into the Sword of Night if you go to one of the other altars. Not confirmed but it probably works the other way as well

Interestingly enough you can swap back and forth from light-dark just by going to the opposite sight. Currently have a +9 sword of light in front of the tombstone in the fog rift catacombs and it's asking if I want to change to dark.

Echoing what someone else said, it does look like you only get one per run. I got mine in the fog rift catacombs and there was no sword at unte, only the altar of darkness.

I wish this was a Santier's Spear situation where we'd need to break the sheath by draining all durability but that'd mean durability would be in this game

Okay so from what I've found, you get one stone sword per playthrough. The alters of light and dark will be at the other places you could of gotten the stone sword. I got mine at the Unte Ruins, so the Fog Catacombs had the dark alter and the Rauh ruins tower had the light alter. Hopes this helps. All this is subject to change

For anyone wondering, the bridge to where the Altar of light can be found is in the rot-section of the ruins. Past the elevator that takes you to the Church of the bud there's a broken section of bridge you can walk over to the tower standing in between the two halves of the ruins.

This sword does incredible Posture damage. Pair it with shield and this sword is basically just a better hammer in every capacity.
- Anonymous
you use this at ruins of unte after lighting the furnace golem with a hefty furnace pot, use it at the altar of darkness to get the sword of darkness, or the altar of light to get the sword of light
- Anonymous
It's the sword from the sword monuments one can find all over the lands between

Notably does strike damage. If you're running a str/fth build you probably want one of the two it turns into, but for a str/dex build, this is really decent. Not flashy, but decent.
Imagine if this could break into a smaller weapon that had a mixed moveset of straight sword ,curved sword, dagger and katana. Like santier's spear

If weapon durability was a thing I would be testing to see if wearing this blade out would reveal the true sword underneath. Alas, it will remain sleeping forever.

This has higher base damage than broadsword. Best Square off straight sword? It looks pretty long too.
- Anonymous
I almost thought they gave us a physical somber SS, nope it's just a gimmick you're supposed to turn into one of two faith based swords.
- Anonymous
it is fast, it is light, and it deals... strike damage.
