Maternal Staff is a Glintstone Staff in Elden Ring. It was added with the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. The Maternal Staff scales primarily with Intelligence and Arcane and is a good Weapon for INT/ARC Builds and those using Finger Sorceries.
Staff of Count Ymir, who made himself a Mother of Fingers.
Carried for want of tail-fingers of his own.
Enhances finger sorceries.
The crystal ball, though representative of a microcosm, would not receive any sign.

I love this staff, it's terrible at low levels but god does it slap at high level. I'm doing an interview arcane build with this and the ancient metioric ore GS and they both delete s£&#
- Anonymous
Why does this scale with Arcane lol? It's part of Metyr, the gleaming daughter of the Greater Will so it and Finger sorceries should scale with and require faith. Unless, you are saying that Metyr is now an Outer God because of her blasphemy and abandonment by the Greater Will. If so, then Giantsflame, Black Flame and Frenzyflame Incants should all require arcane, not faith as they all originate from and are powered by Outer Gods or those chosen by the Greater Will and abandoned by it.

I wish INT hybrid was as good as FAI hybrid builds. It's annoying that FAI gets very good seals/weapons for both ARC and INT hybrids, but INT doesn't. I love that I can get good incant scaling above 300 with just a 40/40 to 45/45 split with FAI builds from Golden Order/Dragon Communion seals because I can stay at meta level.
However, I need to be well above meta level to get the same for INT hybrid. Ik INT is generally a higher requirement for better return, but I wish INT hybrid builds got the same amount of love.

It's fun being a Lvl 300 finger mage one shotting gankers. These int/arc and other split stats spells are fun to try out in high level pvp.
Pretty unviable in PvE as a main staff though because who tf plays through ER up to NG+4 without getting bored to death.
I don't get why is this an arcane weapon, isn't arcane related to 'mundane' stuff? The fingers are not mundane. Seems like a 'mistake', as this uses the regular status scaling curve instead of the catalyst status scaling curve.
- Anonymous
dont dismiss this staff because of its stats its a true monster at max int arcane, plus the finger spells are all really strong its also a nice bonus to get extra bleed on thorns. there might not be a weapon that scales with int and arcane, but just use this staff alone side a good arcane weapon like antsper rapier moghs spear rivers of blood or good blood posion infused weaspons like sword lance and milady and you willo kill everything. if its strong against magic the posion and blood weapons will kill it and same other way round. and for elden beast swap the weapon for metioite staff and ruin it with rock sling and metiorte of astel

At 38 INT and 58 Arcane, Albinauric staff is much better. (332 vs 269). Doesn't look like I'd gain much by respec unless I went pure ARC/INT. Currently I have 35 str, 22 dex, and 32 endurance for shields, weapons and armor. I'm thinking about going without shield for NG+ with this character so maybe I can drop STR and Endurance then. idk.

What is the point of the arcane scaling?! There is only 2 Spells that require arcane. Should've really added more Spells than redundant catalysts.
I would like to say that an Arcane/Intelligence sorcerer is very powerful when wielding the Maternal Staff. I wanted to do a Finger Sorcery build for a character when they were beginning NG+2. The character had an even 81 Arc/81 Int split, because that staff scales off both equally. (The extra 1 points on those two stats were due to wearing Circlet of Light by the way). The sorcery scaling was 414 on a Maternal Staff +10, and that is the same exact sorcery scaling for Lusat's Staff +10 with my 81 Int/64 Str (the two stats Lusat's scale off of). The build destroyed most things, and all the finger sorceries are boosted with that staff. The finger sorceries were extremely strong between the finger sorcery damage boost from the staff, the damage increase from the Finger Robe, my chosen talismans, and my physick flask. The only other spells I had attuned that weren't finger sorceries were Vortex of Putrescence, Loretta's Mastery, Ranni's Darkmoon, and Impenetrable Thorns. Even those non-finger sorcery spells were extremely strong. I also used the Putrescence Cleaver +10 as my melee weapon, because it scales well of Arcane and my magic damage boosting equipment buffed the magic damage on the cleaver. The cleaver is also the reason my Strength was at 64. Now of course this kind of build is a high level build, without leaving yourself as a glass cannon. I started the character build around level 300 and ended at 368. I don't see anyone else utilizing Maternal Staff in this way for a new character, because the stat investment is so high to make it this powerful. I just want others to know that it's a killer build for high levels and NG+ cycles. It is definitely worth trying out if you are looking for something different to build and play as.
at max level this has the same scailing as lusat's staff
so unless you prefer the way lusat's looks, use this instead

I don't really see the point in this when looking from a sorcery scaling point of view. The scaling is so backlogged that Albinauric Staff out scales it until something like 62 int and 80 arcane (Albinauric Staff's arcane scaling falls off at around 44 arcane, but it takes a while for this one to catch up completely). When investing into int, it is better, with it out scaling at 55 int, 21 arcane. But at that point, literally every single other pure int staff (other than the Meteorite Staff cause I am comparing +25/+10) that you can wield out scales it. And at the point where it out scales the Albinauric Staff while still being the best scaling staff, you can literally just swap around int and arc to get way more scaling out of the Carian Regal Scepter and Lusat's Staff. Or move the arcane into faith and get way more scaling on the prince of death's staff. Even when comparing it with other high-level staffs at 80/80 in scaling stats, it is worse than the prince of death's staff by 20 sorcery scaling points.

How long before fromsoft nuke nerfs the status buildup like it did for albinauric staff and dragon Communion Seal I wonder...
- Anonymous
My favorite staff use it on my int faith arcane pure caster build with staff of guilt for thorns, then I have the dragon communion seal for my dragon Spells swapping in Gravel stone and fire giants in off hand for the boosts. It's a pretty good set up
- Anonymous
why does this need 21 arcane when none of the finger sorceries or finger weapons require any... miyazaki please
- Anonymous
I know that this has an A in both INT/ARC at top level, but does anybody have any info on what different INT/ARC combo scaling levels look like? Like 60/80 vs 70/70 for example?
- Anonymous
The build this staff is designed for isn't even useful until about level 200 and beyond, don't waste your time guys just use the albinauric staff and move on
- Anonymous
albinauric staff performs better till you get a very high level in int an arc. so its just another offhand-staff till you hit those marks. sadly there isn´t really a int/arc weapon.
- Anonymous
At 80 arcane and 80 int, you can dual wield two maternal staves and you have the best set-up for casting finger sorceries. Put on the finger robe and you will be doing huge damage.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Wish this had both incantation and sorcery casting for my int/arc focused mage
- Anonymous
The weapon starts with D/D scaling the table is correct but the image is not.
- Anonymous
Long story short, if you're not using planning to use finger sorceries forget about the staff.
- Anonymous
At 99 int 99 fth and 99 arc with the fully upgraded staves I confirm the scaling will give the following :
Maternal staff 430
Prince of death 448
Mt gelmir 340
Carian regal 388
Lusat 430
Azure 376
Albinauric 400
Dragon seal 415
Golden order seal 418
Staff of beyond 376
Staff of the guilty 328
- Anonymous
Is there any benefit to this staff? Even at 99 arcane the alburniac staff gives me a better sorcery scaling
does this staff just have better bleed proc for thorn sorceries ?
- Anonymous
so if im understanding it correctly, albinauric staff for NG and meta levels, this staff for NG+ and beyond?
- Anonymous
I like things in game that remembers players the meta level is a community construction that one decide if they will abide to it or not, sometimes you forget you can make quirky stuff like a weird 80 INT 80 ARC build and get something out of it. This staff has crazy damage and crazy bleed build-up so an obvious path is a Thorn Sorceries build, but with 80 INT you get access to things like Ranni's Dark Moon and a plethora of ice spells, so apply frost, magic damage debuff and then go crazy with thorn spells to get bleed too, with Lord of Blood Exultation and magic Scorpion Charm your damage with Impenetrable Thorns will ramp up like crazy. Most fun and powerful way to play an aberrant sorcerer, nice build to get to multiples NG+ and deal with high HP bosses, but I understand not everyone is willing to go to RL250, so I understand the criticism. But as a thorn sorceries enjoyer I love that they added this staff (please dont nerf bleed build up, pretty please)
- Anonymous
This staff has the same problem as Prince of Death's Staff in that it has severely backloaded scaling (it ramps up late).
Which means you're gonna have to go above 60 on both stats to get full use out of it.
With 80 Int/Arc, it's as strong as Lusat's, if you want to invest that much into it.
Problem with that is it has no synergy with anything.
Finger sorceries are boosted by it, but they don't require arcane. Might as well go pure Int and offhand this thing then for the bonus damage, since I'm pretty sure you get the bonus even if you don't meet the prerequisites. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Aberrant sorceries will cause much higher bleed buildup due to the Arcane scaling, but enjoy adding 24 Faith to the already insane investment this staff requires. You might as well go with the albinauric staff then, since it frontloads its scaling more (it ramps up earlier then falls off).
If you want to use this thing to its fullest potential with all spells that benefit from it, prepare to go to like level 300.
- Anonymous
I've been working on multiple Low Level Builds after my 2nd completion of the DLC. So far, I've made a level 15+0 arcane build and a level 10+0 faith build. Both have 3 talisman slots so far. (Getting that 4th is difficult af) This staff will be going on my next one, level 20+0 int build
- Anonymous
Doesn't having arcane scaling mean it boosts bleed buildup from the thorn spells? Granted, you'd need to be crazy high level to max the staff and have enough faith to use the thorn sorceries.
- Anonymous
Scales with Int and Arc, and boosts finger spells?
Great, gonna use all the thorny roots to bleed the others!
- Anonymous
Does having 2 maternal staffs boost the finger sorceries further?
- Anonymous
I really want to like this staff, I do, but it’s genuinely such a confusing case, it’s meant to be a balanced staff for ng+ but the highest arc sorcery is like 19, the Albanuric staff will consistently outscale it at higher levels of arcane unless it’s a balanced of 70 int/arc at least, the albanuric staff also has higher arc scaling too so it’s better for thorn sorceries then this staff, the fingers sorcery’s don’t even have any arcane scaling so any high damaging staff is going to be fine. At least the POD staff has sorceries that require both int and fth and you get a massive pool of spells to use with a GO seal
Is this like the POD staff but for people who really like the Bayle incantation because I’m kinda lost on why you would use this over the alby staff.
- Anonymous
It exists so that super high level characters have a way to scale sorcery into late ng cycles. Arcane also serves this function on a handful of pure strength weapons that have b/b or b/a occult infused. Meta slaves will say what they will but pushing characters to godlike power befitting of the title of Elden Lord is the real endgame
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Pretty strange that this scales with Arc yet the Finger sorceries have no Arc requirements, it therefore joins Clawmark and Frenzied Flame seal in the weirdo zone of category-boosting casting tools with scaling that's outside of its catagory's requirements
- Anonymous
Good for farming purposes. With this, finger robe and remaining rakshasa set along with sorcery talismans you can actually make a lot of damage with spells while taking advantage of investing in arcane.
- Anonymous
The Int & Arc community would be in shambles if they saw the Sorcery Scalling of this Staff, if they existed
- Anonymous
Do you have to meet the stat requirements to get the finger sorc boost?
- Anonymous
At 80/80 this thing destroys the Carion scepter, the damage was kinda astonishing and that's post nerf.

"This staff has the highest scaling in the game!"
"That's good!"
"It only gets that scaling at ridiculously high levels."
"That's bad."
"It also boosts some strong new DLC sorceries!"
"That's good!"
"It's scaling is -so- bad below 'ridiculous' levels that you're still better off using other staves."
"That's bad."
"By the time you get this weapon in a normal playthrough, you probably -can- max it out though!"
"That's good!"
"...As long as you're okay with investing entirely in Int and Arcane"
[visible silence]
"That's bad."
"Can I go now?"

staff for buffing some pure int sorceries. look inside. its int/arc scaling.
- Anonymous
I tested the staff comparing it with lusat (both fully upgraded)
My stats are 66 int and 66 arc and both have 344 sorcery scaling
I used Loretta mastery and both made the same damage
Which means if you're not planning to use arcane weapons or finger sorceries (fleeting microcosm is pretty good btw) then consider a different build.
- Anonymous
Does it increase bleed by casting with this staff, or is the bleed increase from the arcane investment so you can just offhand it?
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Kinda weird it scales with Arcane when it's spells don't inflict a status effect or require Arcane.
Oh well. Just put it in your offhand and cast finger spells with Lusats for big boi damage.
- Anonymous
I got a question for y'all--what's the point of an int/arc build?

It has a counterpart called Paternal Staff and that one just bludgeons you to death like a step dad

at 50/50 will the boost to finger sorceries outweigh the damage lost from lower scaling vs the albinauric staff?

so this is just their way of saying i'm just better off using albinauric staff without having to do overleveling, got you

I don't understand people complaining about the backloaded scaling when there is a perfectly decent staff suitable for meta level... if you dont want to level to 80/80 just use Albinauric Staff instead?

What’s funny is I’ve been rolling content with impenetrable thorns and I haven’t even tried them on an arcane character yet. Seriously. And with 15 faith from physick/talisman, it’s never been so easy to pretend to have 24 faith. So you don’t even have to worry about the point allocation if you’re min maxing.
- Anonymous
if only it wasnt so backhanded like pod, would have been nice if 40/40 get 75%
- Anonymous
why does the staff made for finger sorceries feel made for scadutree and briar sorceries
- Anonymous
The increase to the finger sorceries should be something like 30% like the staff of loss to even make this usable but at that point just give it better scaling or make the finger sorceries only require Arcane and a minimal amount of Int Trying to run an Int arc build lvl 150 and below that looks thematically pleasing or even does good damage is terribly hard without said upgrades to this or the sorceries
- Anonymous
I'm so glad they added a second Int/Arc scaling Staff while still only having 2 Sorceries that even require Arcane to use which neither staff actually boosts. None of the new Finger Sorceries require Arcane nor have a status that could be affected by Arcane and even at 80/80 stats seems to be slightly outclassed in scaling by the PoD Staff leaving it relegated to either a stat stick for the Finger Sorceries or to boost the bleed build-up of the Thorn Sorceries with 80Int/80Arc also leaving you with less Spell options than 80Int/80Faith.
- Anonymous
The real sin of this staff is that it’s so stubby, and that spells with the overhead slam animation look awkward. Otherwise pretty good staff.
- Anonymous
There are a few faith only sorceries such as some of the Scadutree ones and the two Briars sorceries.
- Anonymous
Either this staff is bugged or the character builder I'm using is. Despite the Albinauric Staff having better Arc scaling, Maternal is getting WAAAAY more bleed buildup on Aberrant sorceries; at 45 Arc Albinauric is getting 124 bleed on Briars of Sin and 94 on Briars of Punishment and Impenetrable Thorns, with the numbers barely climbing to 130 and 99 at 60 Arc, and only getting a point or two more at 80 Arc. Maternal, meanwhile, is getting 212 bleed on Sin and 161 on Thorns/Punishment, which climbs to 236 and 178 at 60, and even 80 arc is getting increases up to 244/185.
Your spell boost will be falling behind unless you really pump your Int, and you need the Faith minimums for the Aberrant spells, but if this is at all accurate good lord, the Maternal Staff will be bleeding everything for days.
- Anonymous
Does it increase status build ups like albinauric? Will it increase IMPENETRABLE THORNS blood build up?
- Anonymous
Its the prince of death staff for the int arc builds in terms of scaling
- Anonymous
Don't even bother with this thing at or below rl 150. At 72 arc and 42 int (min requirement for fleeting microcosm) you just barely scrap 310 sorc scaling. I thought that maybe if I rolled over into NG+ to grab a second staff that the extra 15% buff to finger sorceries would at least be able to compete with an 80 int carian regal scepter build but no. You still do less damage with finger sorceries.
I don't understand why fromsoftware makes these staffs that are entirely useless until RL 200+, like who is this for?

Please delete my previous comment, as its a format mess. I'll put here some numbers.
For even distributions between INT and ARC:
With less than 69/69, Albinauric Staff (Alb) is the absolute best scaling staff (excluding really low values, entering Demihuman Queen Scepter territory).
At 69/69, (Alb) is still the highest scaling staff, but tied with Lusat's (Lus), AND Maternal Staff (Mat) at 359 MagAdjust.
From this point onwards, L and MS stay tied until 99/99, reaching 430 MagAdjust.
For fixed 80 INT distributions:
With 80 INT, and base ARC the best staff will be (Lus) with 413 MA. and the Regal Scepter (Reg) with 373 MA.
As ARC increases, (Mat) and (Alb) will practically be tied until 64 ARC, when (Mat) reaches 373 MA too.
At 80/80, (Mat) also reaches (Lus) 413 MA, without it's downside plus the Finger Socery bonus.
At 80/99 (Mat) is obvioulsy the highest scaling staff at 421.
For fixed 80 ARC distributions:
At minimal INT requirements, 21, (Mat) has 291 MA. and (Alb) 317 MA.
At 61 INT both staff tie with 366 MA.
QRD:
Top staffs per major breakpoint (in ascending RL order):
69/69 (Mat) and (Alb) 359 MA. | 2,60 MA. per stat point.
61/80 (Mat) and (Alb) 366 MA. | 2,60 MA/RL.
80/64 (Mat) and (Reg) 373 MA. | 2,59 MA/RL.
80/80 (Mat) and (Lus) 413 MA. | 2,58 MA/RL.
99/99 (Mat) and (Lus) 430 MA. | 2,17 MA/RL.
As we all knew, until 80 stat points are almost equally effective regarding the scaling.
From 80 onwards, each level put in each stat raises the (Mat) MA. by exactly one point.
- Anonymous
guessing the reason this scales with arc when the other finger stuff scales with fai and int is because the maternal staff is more of a shitty cardboard facsimile of metyr's tail fingers and her cosmos bowling ball. metyr is related to the greater will, but she's also magic space crap so makes sense for int too, but the maternal staff isn't related to the greater will and just related to ymir's fetish for fingers or something
- Anonymous
Gets a very high scaling at 80/80 but you don't really want your arc that high. I'm wondering how it compares to the albinauric staff at 80int/45arc though, which is much more realistic.
- Anonymous
Can someone confirm how much ARC is necessary to surpass the Regal Scepter at 80 INT?
- Anonymous
This staff is more back loaded like prince of death. Albinauric staff is better at under rl 200
- Anonymous
Is the albinauric staff totally obsolete now? I really hope not because I love how it looks. How do they compare? Obviously this staff outperforms albinauric at 80/80, does albinauric come on top on different distributions?

This also should have been able to cast both Incantations , and Sorceries but scale like E/E/S.

Please tell me it's better than Albinauric Staff. Please tell me we're talking about Prince of Death staff sorcery scaling here but for Int/Arc.

albinauric staff looks like **** so i guess im holding on a lovecraftian nightmare stick when i make an arcane build

So does anyone know if this scales up normal sorceries with arcane? I have a Dragon Communion Character, and I'm wondering if I can supplement him with some thorn sorceries using this stave and only having the bare minimum int reqs.

Just run Albinauric Staff. At 40/40 it has about 311 sorcery scaling. Maternal Staff is 239. Maybe it's a higher level weapon idk. But Albinauric Staff outclasses it in every way. I think it even does more damage with Finger Sorceries because it's scaling is so much higher lmao
