Great Katanas are a type of Weapon in Elden Ring. Great Katanas are as big as Greatswords, granting far more damage than common Katanas at the cost of attack movement speed.
Great Katanas can be modified by a number of Ashes of War to change their Skills or Damage Type, so play around with them and see what you like.
This is one of the 8 weapon types added with the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, and is not available in the base game.

Have fun missing half of your R1 neutral pokes in pve because enemy is down or just small (dog, imp, militia men)
- Anonymous
So far have seen nothing about how this weapon has a weird feint. Charge up a heavy and mid-animation press dodge (just like thrusting sword feint) and you'll step back during the swing.
- Anonymous
its a real shame they didn't use this opportunity to make the washing pole a proper odachi and give it a real tsubame gaeshi skill
- Anonymous
The elegant stabbing crit animation of the regular katanas would have fit these much better than the brute force chop, imo.
- Anonymous
I love the style and idea of it and the L2s are unique and steamroll ganks in pvp. Unfortunately, they did make the hit boxes wayyy to wide on all the stabs. And the crouch attack animation seems to skip important steps that convey an attack is coming. Both hurt skill ceiling and make the weapon spammy. The damage seems overturned as well, winning trades against great hammers. I like the forward momentum a lot though, that’s good for the meta, they just gotta fine tune some things.

Anyone else think they're a bit clumsy to swing? Is this an ash of war-centric weapon?
- Anonymous
WTF were they smoking when "balancing" great katanas? None of them have hypearmor except Rakshasha's (which increases your damage taken during attacks). This was clearly a conscious decision to gimp the weapon class, even though they're "great" weapons and all of their attacks are slower than greatswords, greataxes, greathammers, and halberds.
It makes them really mediocre in pvp, requires you to stack poise, and in pvp? Literally useless except as a running / crouching poking stick for tryhards. What a disappointment.

Was testing these out and they all have a feint similar to Rapiers, Curved Swords, etc, where you step back and slash. Pretty cool to see a larger weapon type getting something similar.
- Anonymous
3 great katanas and zero of them are optimal on strength builds. thanks miyazaki! shove it where the sun dont shine.

Man, nioh figured out how to make the longass sheaths look good 7 years ago, these ones clipping into the floor is just kinda lazy

there are lots of arguments about the proper term for the great katana. the reason to this is that there is a massive ambiguity when it comes to categorizing japanese swords, as well as it heavily depends on context in the japanese language. 'nodachi' i think simply translates to 'wild sword' or 'field sword'. but the most i've seen it used, which i believe is the proper way, is to refer to a sword that bears unique and abnormal proportions, but not to the extent to call it an 'odachi' (large sword). an example of a 'nodachi' is an abnormally long uchigatana that keeps the slim proportions of the uchigatana. an 'odachi' tends to have a thicker and larger blade, it also tends to curve much more, like the 'tachi' which is essentially a mounting sword for horse-back combat.
AGAIN, i must state that there is a massive ambiguity between terms, and should be used with a grain of salt

What you mean "Great Katanas" game, they were already great so what is so different eh?
- Anonymous
Why are they not just simply called Nodachi's, or is it simply bad translation?
I don't know if it's intentional, but the large katanas activate the crimson and cerulean daggers twice on small enemies caught from behind or broken positions, like the colossal weapons. It is a show! I hope they keep it and don't fix it, but I think it's intentional. I invite whoever manages the pages to add it, thanks.

Giving 2 of these a scabbard was a mistake, considering they clip into the ground even when standing on flat ground. Why not just a small strap or something instead?
- Anonymous
People who complain about them not being called nodachi have no idea how nodachi looks. These are just fat oversized katanas (except Dragon-Hunter's one, which is just a big curved sword), so the name is quite fitting
- Anonymous
Still miffed that they’re not called by their proper names: nodachis. Then again, I half expect FromSoft to think that people wouldn’t know what one even is.

Monster Hunter Longsword weapons.
Fromsoft loves their katanas so much they even made the Katana Build: The Game at some point.
- Anonymous
These have a major problem for some of us: they clip through really big helmets since they use the over the shoulder carry animation.

Quite good, maybe needs very slight attack speed buff to be an absolute menance, or ot least on strong attacks. Not running attacks thoug, rather neutral r1 and r2 .

if you dodge while charging an attack you make a different attack
For anyone else thats taking issue with the sheath clipping straight into the floor, equipping the weapon in your off-hand angles the sheath a little, which makes it clip a little bit less.
Works best for DHGK due to how curved it is.

Great Katanas? Nagakiba isn't long enough?
69 gil says one of these will be named Muramasa

You think it's disgusting to see nagakiba spinning slash weeb cosplays everywhere? Me too... But just wait for this weapon class to add a great nagakiba with double the damage, hyper armor and the length of a pike.

If this weapon category doesn't have the mortal blade then I'm gonna sue

It would be really funny if there was a Nagakiba version of these weapons that is like 20ft long and you have this stupidly long sheathe dangling from your character

Unga bunga strength katanas… maybe weeaboos aren’t THAT bad.

Bro if the Nagakiba isn't a great katana then what is? :skull: we're doomed but I'm excited

Remember folks, not only are we getting new weapons and spells, but also new starting classes from the DLC!

I'm sure we'll see some heavier samurai armor with more poise to go along with these weapons

I hope one of these is going to be a nagamaki. We've only had one of those in Souls so far.

Here's hoping for a large crude great katana in the shape of yhorms greataxe that has cleaver like R2s

Is Great Katana Odachi or Nodachi? Is it like Mortal Blade from Sekiro (Greatsword size) or Nodachi from For Honour (Ultra Greatsword size)?

Double slash + blood flame blade to get a superior rivers of blood :^)

Looking forward to this one. For me the katana class always had the same problem as the straight swords, which is to say that greatswords and curved greatswords exist and I will always choose more damage per hit over quicker attacks as long as the weapon doesn't feel clumsy. (Looking at you, colossal swords.)

Was this confirmed anywhere that these will be odachis and not some CGS alternative, or is everyone just assuming things?

Bleed infused spinning slash and that's that, wrap it up ladies and gentlemen.

I hope this has as much or less str investment than nagakiba. My guess is this is a katana for str/quality builds tho...

cant wait to be hit from the other side of the arena, not like the nagakiba was already outranging greatswords, pvp is not their concern anymore
