Scadutree Fragment is a new Upgrade Material in Elden Ring, debuting in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. Scadutree Fragments are optional consumables that can be used to enhance simultaneously offensive and defensive capabilities at any Sites of Grace, acting like a permanent boost to your DLC damage dealt and damage negation.

A splinter of the Scadutree that contains golden brilliance. Acquired at the Church of Marika and other places in the realm of shadow. Consume these at sites of grace to bolster your Scadutree Blessing. The Scadutree Blessing bolsters the bearer's ability to deal and negate damage but has no influence outside the realm of shadow. It is said that when the Scadutree crumbles from its core that it will scatter across the entire realm of shadow. The people of the Erdtree collect the splinters and use them in prayer.

Elden Ring Scadutree Fragment Guide

How this mechanic (Shadow Realm Blessing) works:

As players progress through their journey, they will encounter Scadutree Fragment. Upon amassing a sufficient number of fragments, they will have the opportunity to rest at any Sites of Grace, where a new option becomes available to enhance the Shadow Realm Blessing. This enhancement simultaneously augments offensive and defensive capabilities (Increase your damage dealt and reduce your damage received). It's important to note that this process is entirely voluntary and can be ignored if desired.

The central focus of this groundbreaking mechanic centers on managing the impact of inflicted and received damage, while leaving other character statistics entirely customizable. As players advance to higher levels in the downloadable content (DLC), the challenges become more manageable due to the presence of additional mechanics that continue to influence the game. For example, opting to enhance Intelligence grants the ability to cast more spells and utilize extra buffs, while boosting Endurance enables the wearing of heavier armor. These features remain completely unaffected by the optional "level scaling" mechanic, providing players the choice to disregard it if they prefer.

In essence, this mechanic (Shadow Realm Blessing) allows for a more strategic approach to gameplay, offering players the flexibility to tailor their experience according to their preferences and playstyle. By highlighting the importance of damage management, it ensures a dynamic and engaging gaming experience without compromising existing mechanics and character development options.

Do NOTE that the benefits of the Shadow Realm Blessing ONLY work in the Realm of Shadows. If players decide to return to the Lands Between (which is the base game), this benefit won't have any effect.

Do the fragments repair in NG+? I'm at Blessing 18 and DO NOT want to search every location for the remainder.

      • Anonymous

This is such bad implemented cause how do you find these if you have level 15 ? They need to show this in the map or put merchants to sell it.

        • Anonymous

I like this mechanic however i think it was poorly implemented. I feel like these shouldn't have been scattered around considering how important these are for the dlc and instead these should have been placed in important areas that you progress through or placed in churches instead of random places so that you would almost never miss them, or atleast have it so that most are in important places until you're at 15 levels of the fragment and to reach 20 levels you need to explore, because right now i missed one and i need to re-check multiple places.

          • Anonymous

"Groundbreaking new mechanic", brother this mechanic isn't even new to fromsoftware games, this exact system was used in Dark Souls 2 with Giant Souls.

            • Anonymous

is anyone else having issues with finding all 50? I got every single one and still ended up with 49. I genuinely re-checked every single area 3 times as well. wasted like 3 hours of my time just attempting to find the absolute last one. bullshit they didn't add extras like gold seeds

              • Anonymous

makes it so easy to tell if you've invaded a gank. open the status menu and see your scadutree blessing way higher than any host should have at the area you're in? just afk in their world and go make a sandwich. lmao

                • Anonymous

I’m mad at this being an extra step you take to reach base game level of difficulty. They tried to sell them as a way to fine tune said difficulty, but players already do that themselves with their RL, their weapon upgrade level, which NG cycle they’re in and whether or not they’re using Great runes, Talismans, Buffs, etc
What they should have done is made the DLC difficulty level equivalent to being ScaduLevel 10 or 15, and gave us stronger buffs or talismans, or even brought back armor upgrades from Dark Souls for better defense. The fact that FromSoft made Scadulevels only apply to the DLC area means there’s a difficulty plateau they expect you to scale, hence the extra step.
New bosses will always take time to learn but if they become too easy, I’ll either revisit them with lower RL or move on to NG+ and beyond.
I’m sure this and arguments like it will either evolve or fade as time passes and players adapt, much like the discord on Spirit Ashes and Malenia (“it’s not healing or waterfowl; she cheats with poise/hyperarmor”), but I hope this mechanic never finds its way to future titles’ DLC.

                  • Anonymous

my issue with these is how it practically takes away the agency in how you choose to progress, in comparison to the base game

                    • Anonymous

It seems that when you invade your scadutree blessing is scaled down to match the host's. For a while I was concerned about how they would handle this system for matchmaking, because it could either have led to more restrictive matchmaking or power imbalances if one side has more blessings. However, it seems that they've attempted to balance it by making players match. My scadutree blessing is currently at level 5, but when I invade in Belurat it typically shows level 1. I'm assuming this is because the players there are at that level.

                      • Anonymous

IF I were In Charge Of The DLC I Would have Scraped This make the DLC Slightly higher Scaling than the Base Game then make so if You Already Beat The Game you couldn’t Access the DLC Entirely until NG+. But that’s not Fair to Returning Casual Players soo. IDK I’m just a little Evil I Guess.

                        • Anonymous

Just made it to the DLC again on NG+ and can confirm that your Scadutree & Revered Spirit Ash Blessings do NOT reset - you only need to farm them to max level once per character!

                          • Anonymous

So what if I'm in NG++ and I summon someone who isn't and they haven't obtained any fragments yet? So they'll be at an disadvantage twice over? I don't like that. It's all too much. DLC should not be connected to whatever NG plus you're on in the base game. And instead we should get fragments every time we beat an remembrance boss ..kind of like how the upgrade system in Sekiro was.

                            • Anonymous

Aside from a few enemies that seem actually overtuned (or undertuned), 98% of the difficulty complaints literally are just from people that refuse to read any item description or understand new mechanics at all. These are extremely important, not collecting them and exploring to find more means you are doing a challenge run. Several streamers even sent their fans to review bomb the game because of "it too hard"...when they refused to explore for these.

Do you mean that i have to collect all these seeds to have a chance against mesmmer and etc? Replayability will suck

Why dont give this after defeating a remembrance boss? Or a reward for defeating minibosses dungeons or something like it?

                                  • Anonymous

So I have to find the scatdoodoo tree shards so that the bosses don't take chip damage and kill me in 2 hits? What's the point of this? Why couldn't they just scale the bosses to a normal end game rune level?

                                    • Anonymous

You can get more than ten before fighting a boss. You can bypass castle Ensis, I think 17 or 19, but Im not sure.

                                      • Anonymous

oh the controversy :D if you think about it there 2 types of players when you cant beat a boss: 1. grinding same cash grab areas (bird, albunaurics etc.) over and over until you are strong enought to beat it. OR 2. go explore somewhere else and come back later. While option 1 was way quicker in the base game, in the dlc option 2 is quicker and finally also rewarding. And remember both are still valid in there respective Worlds. You still get stronger with lvls its not like they removed it. I think its a pretty elegant game design decision. And remember pls you dont have to find all of them. its not like you only get a reward if you collect all 100 feathers or smth. imho i think at buff lvl 10 its kinda balanced (keep in mind dlc is intended as endgame content) and i think they didnt intended player to get every one of them. Have fun and a good day to all :)

May have been coincidence, but in a 3 player game where I had level 8 Scadutree and another player had 3 Scadutree fragment. It was substantially easier to beat a boss in my world vs. theirs. I'm wondering if you get scaled down or up depending on the hosts fragment level.

im on NG+7 with a level 210 using zero fragments, and im having an awesome time, though i might have to cave in and use them if bayle becomes too much of an issue, he takes ZERO damage and im using a build that can hit over 1300AR, but each heavy charged attack doesnt even let me see the yellow on the healthbar when i hit him, even when trying out different elements theres no yellow, and he can 1-2-shot me, personally im only going to use the fragments if spending 20 straight minutes of playing perfect ends up being the thing i need to do.

Each level of blessing seems to give +5% damage. For a Guardian's Swordspear with exactly 800 AR each level gave 40 extra damage, and at blessing level 20 it reached 1600.

They ought to give you a fragment sensor/compass at some point in the DLC, because trying to get to max level is absurd unless you're extremely meticulous from beginning to end. If they were like golden seeds/sacred tears and placed in easily identifiable spots it'd be fine but they aren't, and combined with the complexity of the map...sheesh. Good luck.

                                                        • Interestingly when you wear talismans that lower damage negation they seem to be negated by the blessings?

Remindes me of the same mechanic of Sekiro. Though in Sekiro there was like 20 of these... in the DLC there are 50 like what the hell... and they are not even tied to bosses. This system needs to die! there is no reason to kill normal enemies anymore, runes mean nothing, just skip everything and pick up things.
                                                            Terrible terrible terrible terrible system.

Since i see some misinformation there according to how many % each turn-in gives, i tested it out on multiple characters and everyone had the same result:
Each turn-in gives you exactly 3.2% dmg bonus and 2% defense bonus. So at 20max it's 64% more damage and 40% more defense.
The first couple bosses you encounter are buffed and with around 5-6 turn-ins you at a point where they are doing the same damage as some of the late game bosses like Milenia, Mogh, Eldenbeast, etc.

This is the worst article I ever read. State the facts of what it does... not a ramble on how it has a strategy...

                                                                • Anonymous

Assassins Creed leveling system. Sorry but its true, literally just passive % buffs. Wouldve rather had DLC specific smithing stones and armor damage negation values than this.

I think when people complain about difficulty, it's not just the difficulty. It's that the upgrading system went from being incredible in the base game, to the same tired and uninspired **** we get from every cash grab "RPG" on the market. So the time between getting your ass kicked isnt as fun, which makes the whole experience feel less worthwhile.

Personally I'm okay with the difficulty level, but I get why people are having problems with it.

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

Been through all the areas and I'm still missing about 5 fragments. Not even sure which ones I'm missing so...

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          • Anonymous

The one north of the abyssal woods site of grace is missing from this site's interactive map, for anyone who (like myself) was using that to try and find the last few they were missing. It's the last one I needed after getting the rest through organic exploration at least, thankfully a youtube video (though much slower than just reading/looking at the map) showed its location.

                                                                            • Anonymous

The area in question is where it says

One can be found next to a Statue. The statue can be found behind some military tents. [Elden Ring Map]

Scadutree Fragment — Messmer Soldier's Encampment:

East of the Highroad Cross Site of Grace, there is a messmer soldiers encampment. Besides a statue, between a few tents. [Elden Ring Map]

I only see one Statue. have had the wicker fire dude burn the entire camp and only the one near the barricade exists. God this side is bad sometimes with it's info.

                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                • Anonymous

How many things need to prefer the host especially when they already get to have guaranteed hunters and summons exactly?

                                                                                  • Does anyone know if say you play the DLC in new game then go into a new game plus to play the dlc again. WIll you get able to get Scadutree Fragments in NG plus as well like you did in new game?

FromSoft: But then you’ll be too overpowered for the base game

FromSoft: Well, yes, you can do that… Come to think of it, let’s nerf some of those old weapons…
                                                                                      Player: Why?

Players: Wouldn’t it make more sense to balance enemies and bosses to be slightly more difficult than main game instead of creating a difficulty spike that I have to bridge over with upgrades?
                                                                                      FromSoft:

On the one hand, it's an interesting way to keep power levels from bleeding into PvP, forcing anyone who didn't buy the DLC to stop playing PVP, and to keep the base game balanced to some degree.

On the other hand, I'm not a huge fan of "go to the place to pick up the thing that makes you stronger" gameplay loop that kind of separates getting stronger from fighting stronger enemies.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

I genuinely love how they've implemented this as a seperate levelling system for the DLC exclusively, it lets us go into a new world with our full builds but feel like we need to level to full power again, giving that first time feel no matter what.

A lot of people either hating on this DLC or review bombing it either aren't utilizing tools given or they're genuinely just trying to rush through impatiently without boosting the blessing, these honestly make the experience all the smoother the more you find, loving the adventure so far.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

This mechanic is fine until you explore everything and find out you are missing like 16 fragments. Then I guess you just wander aimlessly or give up and finish the DLC missing 25% damage/negation. Would have been nice to put more fragments than are necessary to reach the cap.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                                              • Anonymous

Because I have not seen a lot of numbers out there: every blessing level seems to give you a 4-5% bonus to your damage, additive, and an around 4% bonus to all defenses, probably with diminishing returns on higher values, I habe only tested it with light armor (started DLC with around 20% defenses and every blessing level gave around 4% bonus).

                                                                                                • Anonymous

I feel like half of the complaints haven’t even played that much of the dlc because you get a ton of these without trying. For example I’m level 16 just by going through the dlc.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

I think there is a mistake here. Level 1 is 1 fragment, Level 2 is 2 fragments (cumulative three fragments). Level 0 does not require any fragments.

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

I get what the point of this mechanic was, but I think the execution was lacking. It's supposed to be a way of further upgrading your weapons and health beyond the normal level system which is sort of a cool idea, but making it tied to arbitrary random item locations is a bad idea. It just means you have to run around and collect them before progressing with the actual game. What would've been more fun is tying the mechanic to boss kills or something, so then you can be getting increased power while just playing the game naturally. That would also incentivize beating easier bosses before harder ones, since you'd want to get your blessings increased for the tough ones.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

(making +4), in reality I'm at 10+, still horsing around no boss or invader or anything killed.. meaning I've collected 23++ of these so far.

You can find ways to other regions... I still think I can at least get to 13-15+ before I'm finally blocked and must kill a boss or subboss. There's areas I haven't checked out yet that might unlock more regions. So beware of wiki till dlc been out a while. Still very handy to find these things

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

Is it balanced around being used as you go through the DLC? Is it supposed to be an "easier mode" so to speak? Is using 0 considered doing a challenge run? I don't really mind them being here I'm just unsure how its supposed to work.

Ngl, so far I'm not a huge fan of this mechanic. Feels like From was like "how can we **** on the overleveled Players?" I have 60 Vit and things definitely destroy you without any of these. So I basically have to Run around and avoid combat until I have enough of these to a point where the game feels more balanced. I get what they were going for but it feels more like they tried to come up with something unique, but failed imo. I want to explore, fight and enjoy the DLC as much as everyone else but this mechanic and the framedrops i'm getting (PS4) definitely are a downer to me. I don't hate it, but i'm free to say I dislike it. It gives the game a bigger survival aspect like "Oh yeah, you're a Stranger in this strange Land. You have to Play by our rules now." Which sounds interesting no doubt. But the execution doesn't convince me really. If anyone agrees or disagrees, that's okay! I by no means am toxic and say "From ruined this DLC with this crap! I want to go ham on everything!" No, definitely not. I like Elden Ring and want to enjoy it with both it's good and bad sides. Even if it means I have to run instead of fight. Doesn't really suit my style but I can always come back when I got one or two level ups out of These and try again. Thanks for Reading this, what are your opinions? Are you enjoying the DLC or do you think it's lacking something? I still have mixed feelings but i'll pull through.

Have fun with the DLC everyone. Don't give up skeleton.

Dmg negation is a bit trickier but looking at the factor by which they reduce damage (calculated as 1 / (1- x) ) you get a factor of 1.6 between each other. For example with the same formula you'd get (1-0.25746)/(1- 0.40597) = 1.2, or +20% dmg negation as the greatshield talisman should have.
