NOTE: Some steps of this quest are missable and you may be locked out of its progression if you progress further into the story. The first phase of this quest needs to be completed before you burn the Sealing Tree at Church of the Bud. You can refer to our SOTE Walkthrough page for more information. This quest includes the progression of Needle Knight Leda, Sir Ansbach, and Redmane Freyja.

shadow of the erdtree walkthrough wiki guide 1

First Phase

The quest begins after defeating Mohg, Lord of Blood in the base game. You will find Needle Knight Leda, a character donning a white robe standing next to the cocoon in the Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum. Talk to her to preface your journey to the Realm of Shadow. She introduces herself as Leda and invites you to join her, and other followers of Miquella the Kind to trace his path. To start your journey, she tells you to touch the withered arm. You will then be transported to a familiar, yet new region. The first thing you will do is to look for her allies throughout the Shadow Realm.

Redmane Freyja

Redmane Freyja is located at the Three-Path Cross due north of the Gravesite Plain - Site of Grace. She will speak to you about how she intends to journey alone and assure you that she will not cross any of Miquella's followers. Ask her what she's going to look into, and she will mention the vow that Miquella once made with General Radahn. She seeks to know the nature of the vow. Then, continue the conversation by asking her "What if you become our enemy?", she will reply that she will be true to her word. Make sure to exhaust all of her dialogues before leaving the area.

those who follow miquella npc questline sote elden ring dlc wiki guide 5

You will find Redmane Freyja again at the Shadow Keep, on the Storehouse, Seventh Floor. You will find her crouched low and attempting to read scriptures off a stone. Talk to her and exhaust all her dialogues. Then, speak with Sir Ansbach on the First Floor.

Take the Letter for Freyja from Sir Ansbach,  return to her location at the Storehouse, Seventh Floor, and give it to her. Exhaust all her dialogues to receive Golden Lion Shield.

IMPORTANT: Not giving Freyja the Letter for Freyja will lead to her death and ending her questline.

IMPORTANT: You will not be able to obtain the Golden Lion Shield if you don't deliver the Letter for Freyja.

Sir Ansbach

Sir Ansbach is located at Main Gate Cross - Site of Grace, in the steps before entering Belurat Tower Settlement. He introduces himself as Ansbach, someone who used to serve Mohg but has been guided by Kindly Miquella. Exhaust his dialogues and talk to Moore behind him.

those who follow miquella npc questline sote elden ring dlc wiki guide 6those who follow miquella npc questline sote elden ring dlc wiki guide 7

To progress his questline, go to Shadow Keep and retrieve the Secret Rite Scroll from the Storehouse, Fourth Floor. It can be found on a desk behind tall bookshelves. Then, give it to Sir Ansbach at his new location in the Storehouse, First Floor. Exhaust his dialogues and then, tell him about Freyja. Accept the Letter for Freyja.

IMPORTANT: Be sure to mention Freyja when speaking with Ansbach before giving him the Secret Rite Scroll as he will leave his location, not giving you the Letter for Freyja and locking you out of her questline.

Return to Ansbach after taking the letter to Redmane Freyja and exhaust his dialogues.

Moore

Moore can be found at the front of the gates to the Belurat, Tower Settlement Site of Grace sitting by some boxes and barrels accompanying Sir Ansbach. You will have to purchase something from him and you will unlock the "Talk to Moore" option to learn that he enjoys finding things as well as talking about Lady Leda, and the Forager Brood. When you rest at the Site of Grace, you can speak to Ansbach about Moore and he will give you more lore information about him.

IMPORTANT: Killing a Forager Brood will lead him to invade you.

After meeting Moore, make your way to Thiollier who can be located at the Pillar Path Cross Site of Grace. Speak to him and you will learn that he requires the Black Syrup from Moore. You will need to exhaust his dialogue options and he will give you the Black Syrup that Thiollier needs. Return to Thiollier once more, and he will exchange the Black Syrup for Thiollier's Concoction.

IMPORTANT: You will need to complete this before burning the Sealing  Tree

Needle Knight Leda

You will find her at the Highroad Cross - Site of Grace in Scadu Altus. She informs you that Sir Ansbach needs to be eliminated. From here, you will have a choice of assisting Needle Knight Leda, or Sir Ansbach in an upcoming fight. You can join this fight by returning to 1Sir Ansbach's last location at the Storehouse, First Floor. Choose to be summonsed to assist Sir Ansbach by interacting with the golden summon sign. This makes Sir Ansbach available to assist you in the final boss fight. Otherwise, the red summon sign will make you an ally to Needle Knight Leda.

Defeat Needle Knight Leda to receive Ansbach's Longbow and Leda's Rune.

IMPORTANT: In order to start the fight between Ansbach and Leda, you have to side with Leda and eliminate Hornsent. If you sided with Hornsent instead, the fight between Ansbach and Leda would be skipped.

IMPORTANT: Choosing to help Hornsent with the gold summon will skip the next encounter with Leda. This leads her to go after Ansbach.

Second Phase

NOTE: The second phase begins after burning the Sealing Tree using Messmer's Kindling. You can't progress the questline after burning it so make sure to get the previous steps completed.

2 enir ilim legacy dungeon walkthrough elden ring shadow of the erdtree wiki guide 600px

After reaching Needle Knight Leda's location in Enir-Ilim, make sure to summon Sir Ansbach to assist you in the fight against Miquella's followers. Interact with the gold signs here, and if you have progressed Thiollier's questline, you can also summon him here, giving you 2 cooperators for the fight. Eliminate all followers of Miquella to receive Leda's Sword.

Then, once you return to your world, you can pick up all the dropped items:

Redmane Freyja:

Hornsent:

Dryleaf Dane:

Needle Knight Leda:

IMPORTANT: The Oathseeker Knight Armor set will need to be looted elsewhere.

After the fight, go up the stairs and take the elevator, and speak with Sir Ansbach before you go up to the final fight. Exhaust all of his dialogues by asking him about Thiollier and Mohg. Then, interact with the golden summon signs of Thiollier and Sir Ansbach before entering the boss room. Both of them will drop their items after the fight.

IMPORTANT: It is optional to summon Thiollier and Sir Ansbach during this fight, reload the world and their bodies will appear in the arena after you have defeated the final boss.

Thiollier:

Sir Ansbach:

Moore will give you the Black Syrup that you can give to Thiollier for Thiollier's Concoction to give to Dragon Communion Priestess.

Forager Brood Cookbooks in Elden Ring

You can collect the Forger Brood Cookbooks that are found near a Forager seen by a cliffside. The 7th and last Forager Brood Cookbook, however, is given to you by Moore if he does not die during his questline. If Moore does die, you will be locked out of collecting the Forager Brood Cookbooks, if you kill a Forger, Moore will invade and attempt to kill you.

Here are the following locations for the cookbooks:

  • Forager Brood Cookbook (1): Acquired from a pest who hands it to you if you interact with him just west of Ruined Forge of Starfall Past along the cliffside [Map Link]
  • Forager Brood Cookbook (2): Given by a Non-hostile Servant of Rot. From the pond located to the east of the Cliffroad Terminus Site of Grace, exactly all the way south on the map. It may require certain well-timed jumps from Torrent. [Map Link]
  • Forager Brood Cookbook (3): Acquired from a pest who hands it to you if you interact with it at the north-east corner of the forest of lightning rams near the Furnace Golem on the Ellac River. The closest Site of Grace is Cerulean Coast. [Map Link]
  • Forager Brood Cookbook (4): Acquired by interacting with a pest found north of Church of the Crusade. The pest will be found shivering and unresponsive. Use a Warming Stone or Sunwarmth Stone to warm it up, and reload the area by teleporting or logging out. It can now be interacted with and will grant the cookbook. [Map Link]
  • Forager Brood Cookbook (5): Acquired by interacting with the pest found along the right cliff edge in the Deathbird-infested poisonous swamp north of Moorth ruins. The swamp can be reached by going through the cave with the Miranda flowers and Perfumers. [Map Link]
  • Forager Brood Cookbook (6): Acquired by interacting with the pest found east outside of the Shadow Keep. It can be accessed from the Church District Highroad site of grace and traveling West up the cliff above the tunnel road, then continuing West to the outer wall of the keep. [Map Link]
  • Forager Brood Cookbook (7): Acquired by selecting the option "Talk to Moore" when speaking with Moore. Requires having all of the other Forager Brood Cookbooks. [Map Link]

I only got Cookbooks #1-5 and Moore gave me #7 without needing #6. You can do this before breaking the charm.

What do you mean by friendly scavenger scarab? I genuinely don't know what is that. The pest thread dudes? The treasure scarabs? Please enlighten me to the friendly creatures I somehow missed

            • Anonymous

I forgot to do his quest line and just visited him where you find him. Its so sad. He is like "I dont feel the light of miquilla anymore, but we must go on" or something. Then if u talk to him, "They dont come to visit me anymore (lists names of all the allies). Where have they all gone?" And I was about to kill him for the armor and I interacted with him and he said basically always a friend to you. So he will die the second play through for now he will live

              • Anonymous

Thank Miyazaki you can't lock on to the pests. Otherwise I'd instantly jumped them with my great stars
I know Moore asked me not to hurt the brood but my man didn't tell me he's homies with pillbugs

                • Anonymous

accidentally told him to put it behind him since i didnt know it would make him part of the leda fight so i decided to kill him by killing the sleeping bug behind church of crusade but he didnt invade me, unsure if its a bug or just because i was too far into the main quest, i got too the point where im in the shadow keep btw if anyone wants to try and replicate it to see if he invades or not

Sorry, a bit confused by the quest progression; if I’ve given the black syrup to Thiollier, is there any reason not to kill a bug to make him upset so he invades me instead of having him join Leda’s fight? Is he needed for anything else?

                      • Anonymous

This guy is proof that the Pests/Kindred of rot/Scavengers or whatever you want to call them are the best folk in the lands and everyone else is a jerk.

Where is our "Threaded Rune of Pests" ending where our bug homies rise up Miyazaki!

                        • Anonymous

Only managed to avoid killing pests before reading the cookbook guides because I soon as I see one of those I run in the other direction.

                          • Anonymous

To the left of Shadow Keep there is a church where you get invaded, head behind that church and to the right. There's a pest on the ground rolled up, attack it will lead to you killing it and Moore invading.

So I don’t know if it’s already been posted but I seem to have found a peaceful ending to his questline, albeit without getting any of his gear. I found and helped all the of forager brood and got the final cookbook from Moore. I never told him to remain sad forever or to put it behind him, I only told him “I don’t know.” I helped Hornsent, and in the penultimate fight, only fought Leda, Dane, and Freyja. To my surprise, after final boss, Moore is still there. He’s a bit sad because none of the Miquella search party come to visit him anymore, but he’s glad you still do and thanks you for being a friend. Not sure if there’s anything more to this quest, maybe after exhausting his stock of items?

The first time I try doing a playthrough blind and I fk up literally the most lovable NPC quest line ever due to sheer instinct on seeing those annoying asz centipedes. How the fk was I supposed to know?? Don't say "it was docile," because there's a half-buried noble in the consecrated snowfield that turns into a fking runebear upon attacking. We're literally taught to kill before we ourselves are killed, and the ONE time that isn't the case, it just so happens to be the cutest mfkr in the game. I literally promised myself if anything happened to that mfkr I would kill every other npc and then myself. What a fked up turn of events, all because the ONE time literally one of THE MOST ANNOYING MOBS ends up needing to not die, despite literally having NO DIALOGUE that would INDICATE that.

If you fight Leda before the last boss without talking to him after the charm breaks he’ll be all alone and acknowledges that no one visits him anymore

After Thiollier moves south while Moore is still at his first location by the Main Gate before Belurat, he will inherit Thiollier's stock. Hopefully, this means his bell-bearing also includes Thiollier's stuff, but I haven't gotten far enough to confirm that.

"He" is literally a rot insect. "Forager brood" refers to the caste of insect that gathers food for the hive. The only good bug is a dead bug. I'm doing my part. Would you like to know moore?

failing a questline because of killing a random rot guy in the middle of nowhere might be the worst fail condition in fromsoft history.

Damn you Moore, i should've told you to stay turbo sad instead. I cheered you up and you repay me with a gank squad?!

                                          • Anonymous

Do NOT tell him to put it behind him. It makes the Leda fight much more difficult. Tell him to remain sad forever that way you have one less npc to worry about.

                                            • Anonymous

If you have talked to both Moore and Thiollier, but have not received the Black Syrup from Moore, he will still give it to you after the Great Rune spell breaks as long as you tell him to "Put It Behind You" and talk to him a second time.

Never commented on a wiki before, but having to kill this guy for his armor made me wanna cry. Gonna make sure all my excess runes go to him next NG+.

Got invaded by Moore at night time.
South of Cliffroad Terminus up on a hill with blue graves I killed a passive enemy and then got inavaded by Moore.
Killing him dropped his shield and armour set and returning to Main gate cross I found his bell bearing...

So i found evil end to his quest?

                                                          • I love this guy and his bug friend. Anyone who kills them maybe should learn to lock on before attacking, although I almost made the same mistake too.

                                                                  • Anonymous

Did the same mistake of killing the kindred of rot outside the church and got invaded by Moore.

I kept running since I wanted to try seeking forgiveness with turtle pope, but eventually he returned to his world. I could still speak with him at his original location where he mentions one of his forager brood is killed, but doesn't know who did it. Guess I'm in the clear thankfully.

FYI trying to seek forgiveness at turtle pope just says "You don't need absolution"

                                                                      • So, if you kill the kindred of rot and he invades and you die/run away and then teleport to where he normally is at the Gravesite Plain grace and talk to him he will say
"One of the forager brood was killed. This thing, is a tragedy. This thing, cannot be forgiven."
And then he just goes back to selling you stuff and saying he likes finding things.
I guess all has been forgiven!

Then he invaded me on the way to rauh, because I killed that sleeping rot shrimp, screw those things I will always kill them on sight. Got the armor and greatshield, went back to belarut and his bell bearing was there. Hope that this didn't break any important quests.

                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                  • Anonymous

It doesn't aggro and just sits there, but if you kill it, then Moore will invade as a Recusant and drop the Verdigris Armor set and the Verdigris Greatshield. He fights with the greatshield, fat rolls, and throws giant pots that inflict scarlet rot if they hit.
