D, Hunter of the Dead is an NPC in Elden Ring. D is a hunter of the undead who can be found where the Tibia Mariner boss is located, and later at the Roundtable Hold. When you first encounter D, he will warn you that the nearby small town of Summonwater Village has been taken over by a Mariner. If the player shows him Deathroot and takes him up on his offer of introduction, he will mark your map with a red "Sending Gate" waypoint, indicating that it will take you to the Beast Clergymen.

I’m known as D. I hunt Those Who Live in Death, and weed their Deathroot.

D, Hunter of the Dead Questline: How to complete D, Hunter of the Dead's Quest

  • D, Hunter of the Dead is first found in Stormhill, Limgrave, to the east of Stormhill Shack. Here, he will warn the player of "those who live in death", referring to the undead infestation of Summonwater Village
  • He can also be found in Roundtable Hold on your first visit, if you skip first step, met Gurranq (without his help) and defeat Godrick the Grafted.
  • You should go to Summonwater Village and defeat the Tibia Mariner boss there, then return to D at the Roundtable Hold or rest at grace and find him by the southwestern entrance in the water of Summonwater Village to continue his quest. He will give you directions to the Bestial Sanctum in Caelid. You can teleport there without having to explore by going to the "Sending Gate" in East Limgrave. [Map Link]
  • Will become available as a merchant once the player has visited Gurranq. Player can return to Roundtable Hold and speak to D, who will give them a dialogue option; selecting "yes" will allow the player to purchase D's incantations.
  • During Rogier's quest line, a letter left to you by Rogier mentions that D has a younger brother, and hints at his location.
  • During Fia's and Rogier's quest line, you will be asked to find the owner of a particular Weathered Dagger. D is the owner. Give him the dagger and reload the area. Then, in a newly opened room in the back of the Roundtable Hold, you will find D's Bell Bearing and the Twinned Set.
  • You can find his twin brother just before the arena for the Valiant Gargoyle boss in Nokron. [Map Link] You will receive the Inner Order gesture upon interacting with him.
  • D's armor (unaltered) can optionally be given to his brother. If you do so, and then reload the area (none of the mobs you've killed will respawn), you can summon him for help with the gargoyles. In addition, he will appear again near the end of Fia's quest line. If you don't give him the armor, he will remain on the balcony where he was first encountered.
  • Alternatively, you can kill D at his first location and give the armor to his brother. After reloading the area or the game, D's brother will be aggressive to you and can be fought.

Dialogue in Elden Ring: D, Hunter of the Dead

Introduction at Roundtable Hold

  • "I don't believe we've met. I'm known as D. I hunt down Those Who Live in Death, and weed their Deathroot. Heed my warning. Those Who Live in Death should be left well alone. All the more, should you spy a mariner among their number. Unless you wish to lay down your life in vain."
  • (If previously spoken to in Limgrave) "Ah... we meet again. I'm glad you took my warning to heart. Those Who Live in Death should be left well alone. All the more, should you spy a mariner among their number."
  • "Those Who Live in Death should be left well alone. All the more, should you spy a mariner among their number."

Introduction at Limgrave

  • "There's no mistake, is there? Death has left its mark once again.
I'm sorry, I cannot give you your proper rites...
But at least you did not join Those Who Live in Death. Your soul will return to the Erdtree, in time.
Honeyed rays of gold, deliver this spirit."
  • (When spoken to) "Ah, a Tarnished, are you? I'm known as D. I hunt down Those Who Live in Death, and weed their Deathroot.
Heed my warning. The village here has been touched by Death.
And worse yet, it is home to a mariner. If you value your life, then go no further."
  • "The village here has been touched by death. Turn back, while you still can."
  • (When spoken to after obtaining Deathroot) "Ah, a Tarnished, are you? With a prowess for weeding Deathroot.
... I'm known as D. I hunt down Those Who Live in Death, and weed their Deathroot."
     (continues into Gurranq introduction dialogue)

When attacked

  • (Warning) <wince>
"Don't you dare. Unless you want to die like a dog?"
  • (Combat) "Very well. Honeyed rays of gold, deliver this spirit."
  • (On player kill) "I swear, there's a blight spreading amongst the Tarnished..."

When killed

  • "How could this... happen...?
    Forgive me, Devin... D-Devin..."

After showing Deathroot

  • "Well, well... Another fool who won't listen to reason, eh? But with a prowess for weeding Deathroot.
... How would you like to earn the strength of beasts? If you're inclined to hunt more of Those Who Live in Death, and weed their Deathroot, then I'll introduce you to Gurranq, the beast clergyman.
I have a matter of my own to attend to. And the beast himself wishes for someone to take my place. What say you?"
  • [Accept introduction] "Very well. Show me your map.
... I've marked the location for you. Of a hidden gateway. It will lead you to Gurranq, the beast clergyman."
(A red mark was made on the map)
  • "What is it? Still milling about? The map indicates where the gateway is hidden. It will lead you to Gurranq, the beast clergyman."
  • "I have a matter of my own to attend to.
(If still in Limgrave) I spotted the mark of the centipede here in the village.
(If in the Roundtable Hold) I've spotted the mark of the centipede.
An ill-omened symbol that should not be. Someone, or something, threatens the sanctity of the Golden Order. And must be eradicated."
  • [Decline introduction] "Well, all right, then. No sense in forcing you."
  • [Decline introduction, then talk] (If still in Limgrave) "What now? Had a change of heart?"
(If in the Roundtable Hold) "What's wrong? Got cold feet, have you?"

After accepting introduction, before meeting Gurranq

  • "Ah, hello again. You haven't gone to see Gurranq yet, have you?
Well, no rush. You do as you please.
Just as long as he doesn't starve to death, eh."
  • "Go to Gurranq only if you feel the time is right. Killing Those Who Live in Death and weeding their Deathroot...
Is a path not to be trod without ample resolve."

After meeting Gurranq

  • "You've met Gurranq, I take it? Then owing to our duties shared, we are now comrades-in-arms.
I think you've earned this. The power of the Golden Order, to aid the hunt of Those Who Live in Death."

Visit

  • "Ah, hello. You've been busy weeding Deathroot, I take it. I thank you, as your brother-in-arms.
So, what can I do for you?"
  • "Ah, hello there. What can I do for you?"
  • "Did you need something else?"

About D

  • "I serve the Golden Order. That I might put this crooked land to rights.
Following only the guidance of the great Elden Ring. Those Who Live in Death fall outside the principles of the Golden Order.
Their mere existence sullies the guidance of gold. Tainting its truth. And so it is the vermin must be exterminated... Down to the very last."

About Rogier

  • "Are you acquainted with a man named Rogier? You know, the piteous fellow hiding away on the balcony?
He was a formidable spellblade, in times past.
Don't let his easy air deceive you. He was wise beyond his years, stout of heart and clear of mind.
No more though. You see him now, ravaged by thorns, muttering and rambling...
Like he's half dead already. I can't stomach to watch. Take well the lesson, friend.
That's how you end up, when seduced by Those Who Live in Death. When grace is sullied, it rots people from the inside. Breaks them."

After showing Weathered Dagger

  • "Well, what have we here? How did you get your hands on that dagger? ...Well. That hardly matters. I know very well whose dagger it is. Why don't I return it to them for you? Good work, bringing this to me."

Elden Ring D Notes & Trivia

D sorry my man but i had to kill your brother, it ain't personal. I NEED that inseparable sword for my greatsword collection.

Upon my first gameplay, I was nervous about anything I have encountered so far in the game. After making my way across the bridge and meeting the huge pumpkin head guy, I made my way past him and the merchant. Off in the distance though, I saw a strange looking fellow looking quite intimidating out in the open space like that. (I thought to myself, I am going to get the first attack if this person attacks me) So I snuck up behind this character and started attacking the crap out of this guy. I attacked him so perfectly, I was landing all my hits, I parried both attacks he used on me, and avoided the holy attacks he summons. Then I got this whole set of cool looking armor. It was not until later in the game that I found out that this guy was a NPC.... hahaha whoops

I was so sad when I found D's dead body next to Fia, poor D RIP :(((((((((((((((. I WILL AVENGE YOU D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can also summon him for the tibia mariner in summonwater village. Ive done it once, and so have a few friends. But only the once. Neither of us have *ever* seen the sign or gotten it to spawn ever since. Anyone know anything?

            • Anonymous

i found him dead in the roundtable hold randomly, barely even interacted with him

i did kill gurranq so maybe thats why?

Couldnt you also summon D while fighting the Gargoyle twins at the aqueduct after giving the NPC the armor right befor the arena?

                • Anonymous

I didn't have to reload after giving D's brother the Twinned Armor. The summon symbol appeared right away. Maybe a patch fixed that?

As I ran through the graveyard he was in on my horse, I accidentally gave him the smack as I ran by because I thought he was an enemy but NOPE, friendly NPC. LOL woops! Guess I'm taking a trip to the church.

I liked Fia more before I realized she was going around sleeping with promising Tarnished, killing them and enslaving their spirit.

Her summons are of same hue as Seluvis' puppets.

Man, I wish there was more we could've learnt from him and his twin. Elden Ring has the best npcs so far

This guy can be killed by nearby monsters where you first find him. They won't aim for him directly, but keep in mind that he won't fight back if he gets hit by them. If you want to kill him indirectly it's great, but if you want to keep him alive clear out the nearby graveyard first.

                          • Anonymous

D and Fia both believe they’re doing the right thing. Those Who Live In Death are victims of circumstance who just want to live. D wants to uphold the Golden Order, for accepting him when he and his brother were deemed freaks. Fia accepts those whom D and the Golden Order deem freaks, ironically.

No “bad guy” here. Just people with opposing convictions.

If you skip Fia's quest by going to Deeproot and beating her champions and Fortissax there, D will appear after and he'll have killed Fia.

A lot of themes and NPCs in this game have direct parallels in Dark Souls. D's is less obvious, but he is this game's Twin Princes, cursed souls intertwined into one. When D (Lorian) dies, the other D, who is found feeble and helpless in simple cloth robes (Lothric), "resurrects" him by donning his armor and taking up his sword.

3 times through the game, never discovered him near Summonwater. This game should have a marker for NPCs.

He may have been extreme in his beliefs to an obsessive degree but he genuinely meant well, offering advice, summons and even an introduction to the beast clergyman. Not to mention his reverence for those who were unfortunate to be killed by the undead. A shame we didn't get to interact more with him. Honeyed rays of gold, deliver this spirit.

This guy's name is D, which reminds me of Sunny D, which is what people called the Estus in Dark Souls and Solaire from Dark Souls worships the sun and they both help with bosses so this guy is clearly Solaire

You can find his summon sign in the middle of the road that leads to the pond from the broken bridge. I wouldn’t bother, it just makes the fight longer without torrent.

Ngl, D seems like such a nice guy.

He's only helpful to you the entire time (although he doesn't have *the best* incantations to offer), leading you to Gurranq and being available as a summon for two fights (maybe more). I've seen some people saying he butchered the lady in front of the Tibia Mariner's village, but he literally says "Death has left it's mark again", and then mentions at least she never became an undead, and offers condolences.

On the other hand you have Fia, who does help notable people (Such as Rogier and the Onion Boi himself) but she is obsessed with helping those who live within death, which need you be reminded, are all hostile to you.

I love how it specifically says you can summon d as a NPC summon for the very first mariner. But offers no location for the sign. Anyone know where it is?

                                                  • Anonymous

All things aside, when he's dead he looks like the side character after he got whooped by the big antagonist before the main character could come in

                                                    • Anonymous

Where is D located if you never gave him the dagger and you already have the ashen capital, NG++ so didnt see any point in giving it to him again, was hoping i could keep him alive or give dagger to his brother. but not sure if hes alive or not, or if he relocated.

                                                      • For those wanting to cosplay as D, he uses the inseparable sword and twinned armor set and he uses the Beast Claw incantation. His twin brother uses the same weapon and armor, but uses the Litany of Proper Death and Discus of Light incantations in case you want to combine the two. When he kills Fia, he has a golden aura around him and I am uncertain if it is Golden Vow or Blessing's Boon/Blessing of The Erdtree. I would just use both to be safe.

                                                        • About half the time he's available for the Tibia fight in Lurnia, and half the time he's not. It doesn't seem to be based on talking to him at the roundtable. Any idea what the trigger is for his summon sign to be available there?

                                                          • Anonymous

I dont know the conditions, but you can summon D for the double gargoile fight. At that point I already defeated Maliketh and I had D's Bell Bearing, but not his armor (so I didnt give it to his twin). Its a bit weird.

It is heavily implied that D is an incel and tried to bed Fia, but she turned him down. He even gave a dagger to her in an attempt to win her over. Maybe that's why he hunts the dead. Smh what rejection does to a mf.

                                                                • Just a heads up, I'm pretty sure D will despawn near summon water if Melina suggests going to roundtable hold... even if you don't actually take her up on it.

                                                                  Just happened to me.

After completing her quest, go give the armor to D’s brother. Then go to Prince of Death’s Throne site of grace.

He will be standing over her corpse with a lot of new dialogue. He even calls her a whore

Forgive me if this is old and just not on the wiki. But maybe the new patch added it?

                                                                    • Anonymous

Did the questline up to the sending gate, as well as defeated all tibia mariners. Not sure what other requirements I met but i see no info on this here or the npc invader page.

                                                                        • Anonymous

Despite being a Golden Order incantation user, he doesn't use them to cure himself of Death Blight and gets killed by Fia's Mist in Roundtable Hold, where no fighting can happen any way. Cool armor, lame character. Also, he shows up AFTER you kill the Tibia Mariner. D, your whole personality is "I HATE UNDEAD" why can't you help out?

                                                                          • If you want a early Heavy Armor set and don't plan on using his incantations, just kill him. The only draw back is you miss out on a summon for 1 fight thats a little rough but you get a cool looking and protective set for much of your early game run.

                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                              • Anonymous

He is still alive in my game, not sure why I can't summon him tho.

                                                                                • Anonymous

It seems like the recent change to this article's name (and the NPC associated with it) is a mistake. D, Beholder of Death is the brother of the main "D," i.e, D, Hunter of the Dead. This article is about the main NPC who ends up at the Roundtable Hold, not the brother in Deeproot Depths.

Just to be clear in case it gets changed back, at the time I'm writing this, the article is titled "D, Beholder of Death," and that's how D is referred to throughout the article.

                                                                                  • Spoilers ahead:

Is it implied that D has been consumed with Deathroot? When looking at his corpse at the end of his questline he has black thorns spewing out of his armor. This would suggest one of three things?

                                                                                    1. He was ridden with Deathroot.

                                                                                    2. Fia killed him somehow?

                                                                                    3. Or that he had some type of misfortune delivering the weathered dagger to whomever it "belonged" to. He let's out a drawn out sigh when you give him the item.

Anyone want to elaborate on this at all? I am genuinely stumped

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                      • Anonymous

I don't know the exact combination of things that need to be done to have him as a summon there, but he's here for my current playthrough and was not for past playthroughs where he died via the Rogier/Fia quest chain.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                                          • It looks like the map location for where he moves after you obtain a Deathroot (the southwestern entrance of Summonwater Village) is no longer correct; would it be possible to change it back? (I don't know how to link map locations).

                                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                                              • Anonymous

Fia dies and gives you her set, but there is no blood to be seen. I gave the armor to the Twin and now he is holding the sword with blood. Kinda weird, he just stabbed her while she was already dead.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

Curious how this could have happened? There's flavor text saying it was Ds brother who was touched by the prince of death. Could the D in the round table actually be the referenced brother? Like the two switched spots secrectly?

I think it's pretty clear given the armor & sword design that D's "Younger Brother" is a Mimic. They're of two bodies & two minds — but a single soul, the armor is a silver figure flowing over and embracing the other, and his twin is even found inside Nokron. Not only that, but at the end of Fia's questline, her dead body is lying there whereas he only leaves behind a suit of empty armor.

I'm curious how D came into the employ of Gurranq, and if his soul being split into two is the same reason that he hates the idea of Those Who Live in Death, because the two of them are split just like the Curse Mark of Death was.

                                                                                                                        • Anonymous

Was working on Fia's quest, showed him the dagger from that... and boom, he's dead? Fia's not in RoundTable either spot and her dialogue sounds like she was leaving.

I can't turn in next step of Rogier's to her either.

Think I broke 3 quests at once by not doing more of this one first.

You don't need to kill D. Later in the game he will be dead in the Roundtable Hold inside the locked room in the smith's Hall. He will drop his armor and a bell bearing, which you can give to the Shop owner to buy his incantations.
If you don't give the armor to his brother before ending Fia's questline you can still do it afterwards. His brother will mumble something and then you can fast travel to Deeproot Depths: Prince of Death's Throne. D's brother will kill Fia (altough she was already dead by the end of her questline) and say some stuff about the golden order or something. You can then fast travel again to the same location to get D's Armor Set back and the Inseparable Sword.
