Knight Bernahl (later known as Recusant Bernahl) is an NPC in Elden Ring. Bernahl is a Tarnished Knight initially found at the Warmaster's Shack in central Stormhill. He serves as an Ash of War merchant, selling various ashes in exchange for Runes. He is also involved in certain questlines and will move locations according to player progress. Upon meeting him and progressing his storyline, he can become available as an NPC Summon against the Godskin Duo, as well as an NPC Invader.
Let me ask you something.
Are you here in the Lands Between to take up the fight?
Does your faith in the guidance of grace hold firm, despite the collapse of the Golden Order?
Knight Bernahl Locations in Elden Ring
- Knight Bernahl can initially be found at the Warmaster's Shack in Stormhill. [Map link]
- After pledging your allegiance to Volcano Manor, Bernahl will move into the manor and will henceforth be known as Recusant Bernahl.
[Map link] - After the second Volcano Manor request, Bernahl will give you Letter to Bernahl, a co-op Volcano Manor invasion mission against Vargram the Raging Wolf and Errant Sorcerer Wilhelm, in Leyndell, Royal Capital. He gives you Gelmir's Fury as a reward. This step is unavailable and skipped if the player has already cleared Crumbling Farum Azula.
- NPC Summons: Can be summoned for the Godskin Duo fight in Crumbling Farum Azula. You can find his summon sign by starting at the Dragon Temple Transept site of grace and going up the narrow staircase.
- After Rykard has been killed and the Volcano Manor emptied, you'll be invaded by Recusant Bernahl in Crumbling Farum Azula, in the walkway to the Old Lord's Talisman treasure chest, after passing the Beside the Great Bridge site of grace. [Map link]
- The invasion can happen even if the player has defeated all Crumbling Farum Azula area bosses.
- Until this happens, you can summon him for the mentioned above Godskin Duo fight + his sword will be present on his chair in Volcano Manor, and you can continue to learn skills from it.
When defeated, Recusant Bernahl drops:
- Blasphemous Claw
- Devourer's Scepter
- Beast Champion Helm
- Beast Champion Armor (Altered)
- Beast Champion Gauntlets
- Beast Champion Greaves
- Bernahl's Bell Bearing (not dropped from Invader form, although Skills can still be learned at his sword in Volcano Manor)
- This NPC moves location depending on game's progress.
- This merchant can be fought.

Knight Bernahl Questline: How to complete Knight Bernahl's Quest
- After completing the second assassination as part of the Volcano Manor questline, and talking to Bernahl, he gives you the Letter to Bernahl, which outlines two assassination targets and invites you to take them out together.
- When you return to your world after helping Bernahl with his invasion, you are rewarded with the Raging Wolf Set.
- After the assassinations, Bernahl will award you with the Gelmir's Fury sorcery spell after reporting back to him at Volcano Manor.
- Bernahl will invade in Crumbling Farum Azula. From the Beside the Great Bridge site of grace, go out the door and up the stairs, then turn north towards the dragon temple. Go into the temple, and make your way to the eastern lone tower. He'll invade by its door, dropping his armor set, the Devourer's Scepter, and the Blasphemous Claw usable item.
Knight Bernahl Dialogue
Introduction
- Not seen you before. Name's Bernahl. Tarnished, just like you. Let me ask you something. Are you here in the Lands Between to take up the fight? Does your faith in the guidance of grace hold firm, despite the collapse of the Golden Order?
If "My faith holds firm" option is chosen
- Yes, you're a Tarnished through and through. Takes me back, but that's a quality needed now more than ever. Any interest in bearing the torch, of my battle arts? All I know is the sword. Picked up a fair few tricks in my time, too. Now's the time to pass 'em on. To a good and proper Tarnished, like you.
If "I'm not sure" option is chosen
- Honest to a fault, I see. Such thoughts won't behoove you as a Tarnished. But there’s nothing wrong with that. Any interest in bearing the torch, of my battle arts? All I know is the sword. Picked up a fair few tricks in my time, too. Now's the time to pass 'em on. To a good and proper Tarnished, like you.
- There's a myriad of battle arts in these lands that I've yet to discover. Mementos of all the warriors who raised their arms in battle, lost, and died. A fine tale, all told, of true chivalric romance. That's how I fell in love with the sword, and the arts of combat. It grants meaning even to falling in battle, to death itself.
Other
- No Purchase Made: Not floating your boat, eh? Well, there's no rush. Knowledge of the arts can wait another day.
- Purchase Made: Well, until we meet again.
- After Purchasing and selecting 'leave': Oh, not had your fill, eh? Worry not, I've enough to keep you busy.
When attacked
- (Combat) I suppose I have no choice, then. Is this what grace would have of us?
- (On player kill) Dog eat dog, once again. A sad lot, we Tarnished.
Upon defeat
- You are an enigma, to be certain. The Volcano Manor awaits you.
At Volcano Manor
- You... What in heaven's name are you doing here? The Volcano Manor is a pit of recusants who spit at grace and hunt our own kind.
I hope you understand the weight of my words. - (I don't understand) Then get out of here immediately. The faint of heart have nothing to do here.
- (Repeat the dialog) I told you to leave. Or do you want to say that you understand... What does it mean to be a recusant who defiles grace and kills his relatives?
- (I understand) Well. As long as you understand what you're saying. I thought you a Tarnished bred by virtue.
Perhaps playing that part led you to your doubts, I wonder.
But know that the path you walk is blasphemy, and lead only to a miserable death. Before you consider hunting any of your own kind, think on that.
After completing one Volcano Manor quest
- So. You've bloodied your sword in the hunt. Then I shall introduce myself once more.
Bernahl, a recusant, just like you. Recusants have particular battle arts, styled to our methods of slaughter.
Why not add some to your repertoire? - To take power and make it his own, The recusant must hunt his own kind. To raise the flag of revolt against this sanctified pillaging.
We recusants must become the most wretched of predators. All you can do is laugh.
After completing two Volcano Manor quest
- Look at you. A recusant through and through. I knew you had it in you. Take this.
[You receive the Letter to Bernahl] - A special invitation, to hunt some of the first Tarnished who sat at the Roundtable Hold.
If you should accept, I'll next see you on the field of battle.
After completing his quest
- Ah, I had hoped you'd soon return. I have the reward from Lady Tanith.
Take it. It's yours, by right. - Let us tread the path of the recusant together. Till we reach the miserable death that awaits us.
After defeating Rykard
- So. You killed Rykard? I harbour you no ill will. The strong take. Such is our code.
Even he was prepared to meet a wretched end when he first took blasphemy unto his very flesh.
But anyroad, the Volcano Manor is no more. Though we may yet fulfil an old promise.
We hunted our own kind, and took what was theirs. And with everything in hand, the time has come to rise, against the Erdtree. - O Greater Will, hear my voice. I am the recusant Bernahl, inheritor of my brother's will, and you will fall to my blade.
We refuse to become your pawns. Consider this fair warning.
Elden Ring Knight Bernahl Notes & Trivia
- If it's nighttime, and Knight Bernahl is not inside the Warmaster's Shack, entering will instead spawn a field boss named Bell Bearing Hunter.
- If you do not talk to Bernahl at all he will never leave the Manor and never invade you. You can return to him at any point to exhaust his dialogue. He will then disappear from the Manor and invade you at Crumbling Farum Azula.
- If Bernahl is provoked while at the Warmaster's Shack, he wields a Zweihander and a Sacred Seal.
- Can buff himself by casting Golden Vow.
- As an invader, can heal 1 time.
- After he moves to Volcano Manor, he uses the Devourer's Scepter instead of a Zweihander.
- As a knight, deals Standard and Pierce Damage.
- As a recusant, deals Strike and Fire Damage.

My bro just destroys the Godskin Duo, best battle partner and best dueling partner, see you in the afterlife, in the roots of Erdtree, mate

I feel it's pretty obvious that Bernahl might be a little... cracked, to put it lightly. Certainly not all there. Regardless, can't stand a Recusant, so I go out of my way to kill off Bernahl and Patches at the beginning of every run. Bernahl's armor (yes, including the helmet, I think the uniqueness gives it merit) is sexy, and Patches is just annoying.

quest ist bugged. i did everything like listed above and he doesn´t invade me on the bridge. fromsoftware doesn´t lern their lessons from previous games.

If you've done his 'quest' and you could summon him for god skin duo but he hasn't invaded you, you need to make sure you exhaust his dialogue at volcano manor.

bernahl is probably the best case of classic fromsoft storytelling, you meet him as a normal dude hanging around in a shed with only two walls and what could be generously described as a roof selling alright ashes and you don't think much of him after that, next time you meet him it's in an actual manor in a volcano led by an assassin cult and their snake neck god man and he's wearing a lion anus helmet, he calls on you to help him murder 2 innocent tarnished only once you proved your worth after some solo missions so they reinforce he has an edge to his character. once you kill rykard he suddenly mentions a brother he had all of a sudden (unless he meant rykard as his brother in arms) and the final time you meet him is in an area where only people who managed to make it to the forge and sacrificed their maiden can get to, using only a terrible weapon and holding onto an item only rykard would been holding onto meaning he ranked so high in volcano manor before its dissolution that rykard trusted him with that tool to fight maliketh with himself and he'd do so using the eventual symbol of the lord of blasphemy ,with you only learning this through his item descriptions
we need more characters like bernie in the future if there's more than 1 dlc man, the peoples recusant

I never talked to him after the second assassination quest, so I don’t have “Letter from Bernahl”. I’ve been to farum azula but I haven’t cleared it yet, but he’s no longer at Volcano Manor. Am I locked out from getting Gelmir’s fury?
- Anonymous
Article is incorrect or he was buffed in his invasion form. He can heal at least 3x to full in my multiple attempts, not just once.

The first time he invaded me by the talisman chest, he abruptly left and returned to his world and I had to reset the area to get the 2nd invasion. Why did that happen?

What are the best approaches to defeating his invasion? He deals strike and fire damage, is he weak to anything?
- Anonymous
If you kill Rykard first(through abductor virgin and all the way to the waygate) before getting into Volcano Manor and meeting every NPCs, Bernahl will then die at his Warmaster's shack and you could get all the items he dropped.
- Anonymous
If he despises the Golden Order, why does he use buffs associated with the Erdtree?
- Anonymous
He drops all of the items mentioned above if killed at the Warmaster's Shack.

My headcanon is that at least all tarnished NPCs that can invade or be invaded, if not all tarnished in general, have their own parallel worlds where they have to beat the same bosses we beat in order to progress, that would mean Bernahl got two great runes, beat Morgott, beat Fire Giant by himself and burned the erdtree, surpassing Vyke (who may be his brother) as the NPC that got the closest to becoming Elden Lord. What a chad
- Anonymous
I liked him until he started going about threatening God and wanting to kill everything like a Redditor, then I kind of soured on him.
- Anonymous
He's not poising through attacks. He's glitching through them. They gave him special charge and run attacks but didn't finish them.
- Anonymous
He just stands right nnext to the godskin fog gate and does nothing. when he is attacked he just walks back over to that spot
- Anonymous
I used a lot of deathblight against him in farum azula, but he seemed to be immune
- Anonymous
I discovered that Bernahl will unlock the Divine Bridge elevator for you as long as his request is active. This allows for an alternative path into Lyndell without runes, or defeating Radahn and using the deeproot depths.
The side doors are locked at the Fortified Manor, and you'll actually get to use the lever in the side hallway that everyone has seen and couldn't use. It feels very fitting and fulfilling, seeing as how you're treading the path of blasphemy for Rykard and Volcano Manor.
I have a few screenshots on my Steam page for proof. Username is Chwiztid.

If you attack and defeat Bernahl at the warmaster shack, what does he drop then?

Was he a Recusant from the start and just playing an act or what? Like at the beginning he seems hopefull, but his death and kill dialogue make it clear that he knows the Volcano Manor and what they do and that Tarnished have a almost natural predisposition to killing each other.
If he didn't and just lost faith between his appearances ,what made him do it? I feel like he would mention something. He does mention that his brother was killed. He also doesn't mention meeting you before or atleast his dialogue doesn't change either way. I originally had the theory that his second appearance is his twin brother who assumed his identity as revenge on the Golden Order who got the original Bernahl killed. Can someone check the face data for reference?
Either way, the transition is very confusing

He's not dropping the bell bearing after the invasion in Crumbling Farum Azula anymore. The Sword of Bernahl stays present in Volcano Manor even after beating him.
- Anonymous
I love this character, but I don't understand why he helps with the Godskin duo just to invade you in that spot. Like why help just to try and kill you? The only logic I can come up with for why he helps is that the Godskin duo are a force that can't be took on alone so you both help each other to progress onwards to Maliketh. Then duels you to see who's stronger? Also how did he even travel to Farum Azula?
- Anonymous
The artificial difficulty of this game.. you can mirror his exact set-up and not poise through the same attacks that he does.????????
- Anonymous
You can use 3-4 Giant hunts to just push him over the edge to the right when he invades in farum
- Anonymous
If i didn't talk to him after the assassination, is there no way to continue the quest? Is it an essential step?
- Anonymous
Can any of the lore geeks explain how he (and Alexander for that matter) got to Crumbling Farum Azula? Can he FLY, or just jump good?
- Anonymous
Maybe need more confirmation but he did not invade me in NG after i killed maliketh and dragon lord. In NG+ i visit his supposed invade location before fighting maliketh, and he DID invade, so maybe kill maliketh will lock you out of this questline final step

I just killed him in Farum Azula after beating Rykard but without doing his assassination. I still got Gelmir's Fury.
- Anonymous
Respect for this man. Strong enough to throw hands with you and Godskin duo, but smart enough to drop his pride and ask for a hand with Wilhelm and Vargram. Plus he teaches you assassins gambit to deal with Ordina. I think he really had it in him to become elden lord, or at least down Rykard
- Anonymous
Repeat pancaking with the rotten great axe and lion's claw sorted this chump out. Shame really after he played a blinder vs the godskin duo.

I think that the brother Bernahl mentions in his prayer is Vyke. Bernahl says he is the inheritor of his brothers will, Vykes will being to become elden lord, and Bernahls armor states that he got at least as far as the Flame Of Ruin and Vyke is found near that location.
- Anonymous
am i the only person in the world who thinks the invasion from him is ****ING IMPOSSIBLE? not only does he suffer from typical npc artificial difficulty with ten billion health and unreasonable damage, but he also has a gank of THREE beastmen with him, and on top of that, he LEAVES if you try to draw out the enemies so you can actually have a fair fight against him, like literally how the **** is anybody supposed to legitimately win this fight

I encountered a different outcome with this character I haven't seen mentioned. I killed Rykard without ever meeting or talking to Bernahl at Volcano Manor. I didn't even obtain the Drawing Room Key and open the doors in the Manor until after I killed both Rykard and Tanith. There was no trace of Bernahl, not even the sword he leaves on the chair. However, upon returning to the Warmaster's Shack in Limgrave (the last place I spoke to him) I was able to loot the Beast Champion set and Devourer's Scepter on the ground where he used to stand. I did not find the Blasphemous Claw, nor his bell bearing there however. I cannot confirm whether he still invades the player in Farum Azula under these conditions, as I have not progressed that far yet, but perhaps these items can be looted from him if this does indeed occur. It is worth noting that under these conditions, there seems to be no way to access the Ashes of War he normally sells after he disappears, since the chair with his sword is also no where to be found.

can sets that are already altered when you find them be changed back to their original form in the grace checkpoint menu for altering armour?
Also, I thought I'd pissed on my cornflakes by not getting the no skill AoW from him before I killed him at Farum Azula when I didn't get a bell bearing drop from him. I didn't know I could still get it from his sword, it's a bit cheeky still having to pay that many runes when it isn't any good to him now he's dead.
- Anonymous
Note that Altered Armor drops from his Recusant form, and regular if you kill him sooner before he leaves permanently.
- Anonymous
If he doesn't invade at Farum Azula but his summon sign was outside the godskin duo boss fight, fast travel to volcano manor and if he is in his usual place exhaust his dialogue options and when you fast travel back he will invade where he's supposed to. I think it might have been necessary to do that because I didn't talk to him after killing Rykard and Tanith.

Someone should probably update this page about NOT killing Rykard before helping Bernahl's invasion, or it becomes inaccessible, even if you have Bernahl's Letter.

I really wished they ended up having covenant based endings, along with covenants. The foundation and ideas for them are there and they would've been so perfect. Just imagine siding with the volcano manor like we do in-game but instead of just getting an ending that's not even closely related with the recusants, we have the ability to summon Bernahl as one final friend to battle against Radagon and The Greater Will's influence. It would've been so fitting and a great way to end his questline.
It's honestly such a shame that they didn't add covenants because not only are the covenants the most obvious they've ever been, examples being: Recusants, Bloody Fingers, Carian Knights, Hunters of the Dead, Defenders of the Haligtree, Lord's Protectors. We even could've had incredibly cool covenant fighting areas like the haligtree or leyndell. It's like they literally closed their eyes and pretended covenants didn't exist just for this game. Makes me really sad at what could've been.

If his sign won't appear (I checked only the "hidden" Grace - Transept) just go talk to him in the Volcano Manor. I did assassinations in order, aka I didn't kill Rykard before Mountaintops target. Bernahl left his sword, so if is missing/won't appear for Godskin Duo, just go talk to the sword, (try to) buy something, even if you already bought everything, and the sign appears in Azula for Duo.

if you picked "I'm not sure" when meeting him at the Warmaster's Shack, he has slightly different dialogue when talking to him at Volcano manor, mentioning that you had always harbored doubts or something along those lines

Best invasion ever. He rolled up against the railings, and one giant hunt poked him over the edge. Very satisfying after failing to get past that bloody draconic sentinel for hours
- Anonymous
I’m fairly confident he casts Protection of the Erdtree and Golden Vow going off appearance. However, he might only use Protection of the Erdtree when aggroed and Golden Vow in his invasion since I don’t believe I’ve seen him use both at once.

Local man vies for the title of iron tarkus 2, fails because he still needs someone to distract the bosses for him

Dual whips absolutely demolish his invasion, as long as you don't try to stagger him through his charged attack. Jumping attacks (and even the weapon art) can easily be interrupted by dual whips as well

Why did he ambush us at that spot in Farum Azula? Was he just a mere guard the developers came up with, to protect the Old Lord's Talisman? I have no idea why he wanted to kill me and why I had to kill him...

If you never do anything related to him beyond buying stuff from him in the Warmaster's shack, he will eventually just leave his armor, weapon, and bell bearing there and vanish. Threw me for a loop on my first playthrough as I decided to leave the manor for a second "evil" playthrough so I'd have some fresh content and was wondering why this friendly, pointless vendor had vanished and left behind all this gear with very foreboding descriptions and a completely different weapon from the zweihander he'd been holding. Pretty sure this was after clearing Farum, but it could have been from Rykard seeing as I don't remember getting the tool.
- Anonymous
I think the reason he jumps you in Farum Azula is of a sort of "may the best man take the throne" way. Like he wants to make sure that only the stronger of you two will become elden lord.
As for tips, he doesn't have enough passive poise to tank a halberd, but he can hyper-armor it, so be careful.

i wonder why he attacked, i thought he didn't harbor any ill will..

Tough fight. His weapon is needed for a Gold Trophy. Rivers of Blood 2H + Briar Grateshield (70 blood-buildup) + Windy Crystal Tear to enhance rolling did it for me. Roll through his attacks and attack when he's preparing his red-glowing magic-attack.

Lowkey the closest NPC to entering the Erdtree, wouldn’t have made it past Godfrey though.

probably the next strongest tarnished after the player character. im almost certain he previously defeated the fire giant (cursed by marika to guard the forge for eternity), and made it to farum azula, but he never defeated maliketh to fully burn the erdtree. the manor has a painting of the partially burned erdtree, and leyndell, even before we defeat maliketh, is already covered in ash, especially in the abandoned section with all the misbegotten. his armor says his maiden threw herself to the flame, and i think theres a good chance this maiden was even melina. we don't die when we burn the erdtree with the frenzy flame (also alexander presumably burns himself in the forge, and ends up in farum), so its very possible melina doesnt either, and it really seems like shes working with marika to facilitate the whole tarnished journey, which i believe bernahl followed as well. when leaving the manor, bernahl says it is time to rise against the erdtree, which he does very literally. he returns to farum azula, weilding a blasphemous claw, ready to defeat maliketh. ramble over, i just think bernahl is really cool, and havent seen anyone go deep into his lore. i love the tarnished stories.

I'm definitely not against people using summons. But come on bruh. When invading why does this guy have 5k+ hp and does good damage. Dude is literally unkillable, lol. Reminds me of Hodrick in the woods in DS3 but the difference there is Hodrick attacked everything. At least in the other games, NPC summons were tanky but killable and didn't do tons of damage to invaders. I swear, they didn't playtest anything for this game in terms of multiplayer. Not the hosts fault, just incompetent balancing on FromSofts end. Time to adapt, I guess....
- Anonymous
Of course he’s a Chad. He was wielding the zweihander after all, A shame he ditched it for the hammer but anyone who wields zwei is a legend in some capacity.

There's some conflicting information about whether you can kill Rykard and then finish Bernahl's request to get the Raging Wolf Set so I made some backups and tested it. The answer is yes but it's easy to mess up, first you need to have received the request from him after doing the second assasination quest from Tanith or you'll never get his letter, then you can kill Rykard without finishing Altus or Leyndell BUT after killing Rykard do NOT talk to Bernahl until you've done Leyndell and invaded his targets or you'll trigger the next part of his quest and he'll move to Farum Azula.

I think there is a missing piece of dialogue possibly for if you harbored doubts about grace when originally speaking to Bernahl, where after going to volcano manor he has alternate dialogue, as that is what I remember doing when I spoke to him. Found it in a text dump:
Well. As long as you understand what you're saying.
[326040010] You have harboured doubts from the very beginning.
[326040020] Perhaps this day was always lurking on the horizon.
[326040030] But know that the path you walk is blasphemy, and leads only to a miserable death.
[326040040] Before you consider hunting any of your own kind, think on that.

Is there a connection to behrnal and the night hunter that attacks you in his shack every night? I killed behrnal but it did not stop the hunter. He conveniently disappears when the hunter attacks you and pretends not to know anything. It’s surely not a coincidence that he is part of volcano manor, and is some serial killer.
- Anonymous
Do we know who the brother he’s seeking vengeance for is? He may not be an npc, but I’m wondering if the blasphemous claw has anything to do with his brother. Initially I thought, maybe rykard, but I’ve since gained reason to believe otherwise. Anybody read anything in item descriptions that gives detail on his brother?
great to do taunters tongue ganks with his summon at dragon temple transept. once the invader jumps down to the site of grace they can only use furled finger to leave if you let them.
