Sir Ansbach asks the player to find six crosses just like the one beside him and report back to him.
Those Who Follow Miquella
NOTE: Some steps of this quest are missable and you may be locked out of its progression if you progress further into the story. The first phase of this quest needs to be completed before you fight Needle Knight Leda at Enir-Ilim. You can refer to our SOTE Walkthrough page for more information. This quest includes the progression of Needle Knight Leda, Moore, and Redmane Freyja.
First Phase
The quest begins after defeating Mohg, Lord of Blood in the base game. You will find Needle Knight Leda, a character donning a white robe standing next to the cocoon in the Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum. Talk to her to preface your journey to the Realm of Shadow. She introduces herself as Leda and invites you to join her, and other followers of Miquella the Kind to trace his path. To start your journey, she tells you to touch the withered arm. You will then be transported to a familiar, yet new region. The first thing you will do is to look for her allies throughout the Shadow Realm.
Redmane Freyja
Redmane Freyja is located at the Three-Path Cross due north of the Gravesite Plain - Site of Grace. She will speak to you about how she intends to journey alone and assure you that she will not cross any of Miquella's followers. Ask her what she's going to look into, and she will mention the vow that Miquella once made with General Radahn. She seeks to know the nature of the vow. Then, continue the conversation by asking her "What if you become our enemy?", she will reply that she will be true to her word. Make sure to exhaust all of her dialogues before leaving the area.
You will find Redmane Freyja again at the Shadow Keep, on the Storehouse, Seventh Floor. You will find her crouched low and attempting to read scriptures off a stone. Talk to her and exhaust all her dialogues. Then, speak with Sir Ansbach on the First Floor.
Take the Letter for Freyja from Sir Ansbach, return to her location at the Storehouse, Seventh Floor, and give it to her. Exhaust all her dialogues to receive Golden Lion Shield.
IMPORTANT: Not giving Freyja the Letter for Freyja will lead to her death and ending her questline.
Sir Ansbach
Sir Ansbach is located at Main Gate Cross - Site of Grace, in the steps before entering Belurat Tower Settlement. He introduces himself as Ansbach, someone who used to serve Mohg but has been guided by Kindly Miquella. Exhaust his dialogues and talk to Moore behind him.
To progress his questline, go to Shadow Keep and retrieve the Secret Rite Scroll from the Storehouse, Fourth Floor. It can be found on a desk behind tall bookshelves. Then, return to Sir Ansbach at his new location in the Storehouse, First Floor, exhaust all his dialogue options, and tell him about Freyja to accept the Letter for Freyja. Proceed to give the Secret Rite Scroll to Ansbach.
IMPORTANT: Be sure to mention Freyja when speaking with Ansbach before giving him the Secret Rite Scroll as he will leave his location, not giving you the Letter for Freyja and locking you out of her questline.
ADDITIONAL NOTE: Sir Ansbach's questline can be done regardless of when you burn the Sealing Tree.
Return to Ansbach after taking the letter to Redmane Freyja and exhaust his dialogues.
Moore
Moore can be found at the front of the gates to the Belurat, Tower Settlement Site of Grace sitting by some boxes and barrels accompanying Sir Ansbach. You will have to purchase something from him and you will unlock the "Talk to Moore" option to learn that he enjoys finding things as well as talking about Lady Leda, and the Forager Brood. When you rest at the Site of Grace, you can speak to Ansbach about Moore and he will give you more lore information about him.
IMPORTANT: Killing a Forager Brood will lead him to invade you.
After meeting Moore, make your way to Thiollier who can be located at the Pillar Path Cross Site of Grace. Speak to him and you will learn that he requires the Black Syrup from Moore. You will need to exhaust his dialogue options and he will give you the Black Syrup that Thiollier needs. Return to Thiollier once more, and he will exchange the Black Syrup for Thiollier's Concoction.
IMPORTANT: You will need to complete this before burning the Sealing Tree
Needle Knight Leda
You will find her at the Highroad Cross - Site of Grace in Scadu Altus. She informs you that Sir Ansbach needs to be eliminated. From here, you will have a choice of assisting Needle Knight Leda, or Sir Ansbach in an upcoming fight. You can join this fight by returning to 1Sir Ansbach's last location at the Storehouse, First Floor. Choose to be summonsed to assist Sir Ansbach by interacting with the golden summon sign. This makes Sir Ansbach available to assist you in the final boss fight. Otherwise, the red summon sign will make you an ally to Needle Knight Leda, defeat Ansbach to receive Ansbach's Set and his quest would end.
Defeat Needle Knight Leda to receive Ansbach's Longbow and Leda's Rune.
IMPORTANT: In order to start the fight between Ansbach and Leda, you have to side with Leda and eliminate Hornsent. If you sided with Hornsent instead, the fight between Ansbach and Leda would be skipped.
IMPORTANT: Choosing to help Hornsent with the gold summon will skip the next encounter with Leda. This leads her to go after Ansbach.
Second Phase
IMPORTANT: The second phase begins after you fight Needle Knight Leda and some of Miquella's Followers. You can't progress the questline after fighting them here, so be sure to complete all NPC interactions before this fight. The enemies you will be facing here will depend on the choices you have made throughout the campaign. See the NPC progressions below:
- Needle Knight Leda attacks you no matter what your choices have been.
- Redmane Freyja: She will attack you if you hand the letter from Sir Ansbach in Shadow Keep. Defeating her here will drop her items. Otherwise, she will stay in the Storehouse and will disappear to leave behind her items (Need further checking on which items she will drop and where)
- Hornsent: Hornsent will go after you if you didn't summon him during the fight against Messmer. You will also meet him on the way to Church of the Bud (Still needs to be confirmed if he will reappear again at Enir-Ilim fight)
- Moore: The merchant will attack you in this arena if you choose the dialogue to "Put it behind you" when you talk to him after Miquella's rune breaks and if he doesn't end up invading your world.
- Thiollier: If you progress his quest and pass the message of St. Trina, he can be summoned as a cooperator.
- Dryleaf Dane: Just like Leda, he will attack you no matter what your choices have been.
After reaching Needle Knight Leda's location in Enir-Ilim, make sure to summon Sir Ansbach to assist you in the fight against Miquella's followers. Interact with the gold signs here, and if you have progressed Thiollier's questline, you can also summon him here, giving you 2 cooperators for the fight. Eliminate all followers of Miquella to receive Leda's Sword.
IMPORTANT: Ansbach will be alive if you give him the Secret Rite Scroll.
IMPORTANT: A Sanguine Noble Nataan can be summoned instead if Ansbach dies.
Then, once you return to your world, you can pick up all the dropped items:
IMPORTANT: The Oathseeker Knight Armor set will need to be looted elsewhere.
After the fight, go up the stairs and take the elevator, and speak with Sir Ansbach before you go up to the final boss fight. Exhaust all of his dialogues by asking him about Thiollier and Mohg. Then, interact with the golden summon signs of Thiollier and Sir Ansbach before entering the boss room. Both of them will drop their items after the fight.
IMPORTANT: It is optional to summon Thiollier and Ansbach during this fight, reload the world and their bodies will appear in the arena after you have defeated the final boss.
Sir Ansbach:
- Wise Man's Mask
- Ansbach's Attire
- Ansbach's Manchettes
- Ansbach's Boots
- Ansbach's Longbow
- Obsidian Lamina
- Furious Blade of Ansbach
Dialogue in Elden Ring: Sir Ansbach
Introduction
- You must be the Tarnished. I am Ansbach. Formerly in service to Lord Mohg. But now, like you, another sould guided by Kindly Miquella. I am hardly the steady hand I once was. My fighting days are far behind me. Which is why I have chosen to dedicate myself to investigation. To discern Tender Miquella's ultimate purpose. I'd rather not volunteer a service to a new master unless I can be of use.
- May I request a service of you? Six crosses, identical to this one, have been discovered in these lands. They are akin to Tender Miquella's footprints, or gravestones which mark what he's left behind. If you discover any more crosses, be certain to tell me. I presume you too are keen to know. Just what Kind Miquella is doing here

SIR ANSBACH didn't give me the letter to Freyja for some reason and I saved the game reload it and then gave me the letter.
- Anonymous
be wary of regret,
therefore, try traitor
"pointing to the yellow sign."
- Anonymous
Ansbach doesn't always spawn when you summon him. It seems if you summon him, then close the game or teleport away, the come back and do the red fight it locks you out of his entire quest reward.
This entire chain is broken AF. You can also lock yourself out of Freya rewards by turning in the scroll before you talk to her.
Be better FS...

Try to summon him on Consort Radahn fight, he has an interesting dialogue
- Anonymous
Such a shame i have to summon him but not Thiollier for the final fight, he's just screaming and standing there...

Everyone is simping for this guy. He was a Mohg agent. Member of a f-ing blood cult. I killed him without hesitation. People are weird.
- Anonymous
he helped me in the summon fight before the final boss, however he is not in the room where the lift is and i cant seem to find him. i also cannot summon him for the final boss.
- Anonymous
I hate that you have to summon Thiollier and Ansbach during Leda fight to complete the quest. I'm doing no summon run so I didn't summon them. Now they can't be found anywhere. I hate this.

Heads up, you don't have to summon him and Thiollier for the attempt you actually beat the final boss if you want their gear. I summoned him a few times but not on the attempt I won and I still found his body with the items
- Anonymous
I was able to do the Leda vs Ansbach invasion after I burned the Sealing Tree. I never helped Leda with the Hornsent. The signs for Leda and Ansbach only appeared after I burnt the tree, not before. I may have missed a step somewhere, but it seems that the tree progresses them into the duel if you've missed the most recent steps.
- Anonymous
If you missed the fight with hornsent and leda but she wants to kill him and wont move. Kill hornsent in rauh and she will now say ansbach is next even if he left the shadow keep you can do his fight there
- Anonymous
If you kill Sir Ansbach in the Storehouse, First Floor he drops his armour and his bow. The Scythe is only available through the quest it seems

I love being locked out of experiencing content because I didn't speak to someone at the exact time, at the exact place, with the right item in inventory and only after 10 other prerequisites have been fulfilled that I would have had no way of knowing about unless I stopped playing to search via the internet and wade through spoilers. Truely peak game design.

This guy easily has most quest breaking points related to him than WHOLE REST OF THE GAME...
- Anonymous
coolest dude AND has the coolest drip, guy's just chill like that
- Anonymous
If you have both of the dialogue options available on the screen to tell him about the scroll and Freyja, you can do both. Don't worry. I gave him the scroll first and then talked to him about Freyja.
- Anonymous
Remove every instance of getting oathseeker armor from Leda in any pages with her drops listed. It’s incorrect info. You get the oathseeker set from the ledge near the start of the dlc alongside the partisan
- Anonymous
This guy single handely saved the reputation of pureblood knights so hard. damn i wish i joined Moghn instead, if Moghn is worthy of the trust of someone like Ansbach.
- Anonymous
Just to clarify: You don't have to summon Ansbach at the Leda fight to get his items at the end. I didn't summon him or Thiollier at Leda, and also missed the dialogue with Ansbach after the elevator, but after I killed the final boss his items along with Thiollier's were at the boss room.
- Anonymous
Bugged quest, he disappears after you give him the scroll and you can't get the letter to leda. Seems that other people are having this problem too.
- Anonymous
Nice. I gave him the scroll and now I can't tell himm about Freyja...
- Anonymous
This madlad figures out we're the ones who killed his beloved lord and still calls us friend and chooses to fight alongside us, simply because it's the right thing to do. Hands down the best NPC of the DLC. Suck it up Leda, you crazy fanatic.
- Anonymous
Ansbach has quite a lot of dialogue when you find crosses and tell him about them. In my latest playthrough while he was still at Belurat's entrance early on I was able to tell him about the cross on the Cerulean Coast, as well as the cross inside lower Belurat. I'm not sure this dialogue is available once he's moved on after Miquella's rune breaks. I didn't seem to get it in my previous playthrough when I spoke to him later on in the Specimen Storehouse.
- Anonymous
NOTE: In order to start the fight between Ansbach and Leda, you have to side with Leda and eliminate Hornsent. If you sided with Hornsent instead, the fight between Ansbach and Leda would be skipped.
This is wrong. You can skip Hornsent's fight, help Hornsent fight Messmer, and once Messmer is killed, you can talk to Leda and she will say that Hornsent is no longer a problem because his fight with Messmer is over. You then get tasked with killing Ansbach, where you can choose to help him or Leda.
- Anonymous
I burnt the tree, even made it a few graces in and still have the option to fight.
- Anonymous
where does he go if you burn the tree without progressing anyones questlines
- Anonymous
If you want to summon other players for help but you want Ansbach's armor, you can summon Ansbach first and then use Finger Severer to send them back. The game will still count Ansbach as participating in the battle, so after you defeat the final boss, you can get their armor. You can do the same with Thiollier too.
- Anonymous
So I followed this to the letter, got freyas letter gave it to her gave ansbach the scroll, went and spoke to leda and she's hellbent on killing hornsent? Ansbach disappeared and no where to be found... Have I just screwed this quest line?
- Anonymous
If you help Hornsent against Leda, you will not need to defend Ansbach against Leda. His quest will proceed, skipping the part where Leda invades him.
Just clearing that up for anyone else wondering why they can't see his summon sign in the Specimen Storage area.
- Anonymous
Probably my favorite part of the dlc. this guy was just so likeable.
- Anonymous
Does his quest progress when assisting Hornsent instead? Both are betraying Leda so I think it counts?
- Anonymous
Lol this guy vanished after I got to the shadow keep and freyja keeps saying she's busy. I thought I exhausted his dialogue elsewhere but I guess I messed up his quest somehow
- Anonymous
None of these NPC articles mention that helping OR invading Hornsent with Leda fails Ansbach's questline. I had to find out the hard way when I followed the wiki's incorrect instructions and failed the quest. Someone, update this.....
- Anonymous
PSA you DON'T have to summon him or Thiollier for the final boss to get their loot, you can find the loot in the boss room after you defeated them
- Anonymous
He disappeared after I gave him the Secret Rite Scroll. Exhaust all the dialouges and he never gave me a letter to Freyja. Maybe I need to find Freyja first before giving him the Scroll?
- Anonymous
He doesn't give me the letter even though i exhausted ledas dialogue
- Anonymous
"Righteous Tarnished.. Become our new lord. A lord not for gods.. but for men."
Holy MOLY this guy goes hard. Favorite character in the game for me.
- Anonymous
Do you actually need to summon him for the final boss? Inflated health is a *****
- Anonymous
this freaking guy. I don't wanna spoil anything but I have to let it out. he helped me in a invasion very much, then I thought I should grant him the honour of defeating a very important boss, they he made the boss approximately 2 times stronger, and he just walk around doing nothing when I drew aggro, I tried like 20 times with him, gave up and I finally beat the boss without him, it was SOOOOOOOO much easier.

- Anonymous
Wish someone could datamine and upload his dialogue, specifically the dialogue in response to you telling him about Miquella's crosses.
- Anonymous
It says that you cannot progress through the questline after using Messmer's Kindling, but I used it and I hadn't given Ansbach the scroll yet. I still have the option to tell him about Freyja's decision, so I'm not sure that using Messmer's Kindling is the trigger to fail the quest.

he ask me whats bring u here
and i have 3 options
"ask about the person in verdigris armor"
"speakof the cross at the tower"
"leave"
any idea ?

do i really need to summon him for the last Boss to gain his drops?
i feel like i cause no damage at all with summons around

Seems if you talk to Leda at the high crossroads about who she should hunt down before giving the scroll to Ansbach and letter to Freyja, Leda becomes hell bent on only killing Hornsent. I could only get the summon signs to appear in the area before the lift to enter the storeroom, which allows you to assist or fight Hornsent. Couldn't get the invade event to happen in the storeroom. Does doing the Hornsent vs Leda event lock you out off getting Ansbach's bow?
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Biggest chad of elden ring you should summon him for the final boss atleast 1 time to hear his dialogue
- Anonymous
Man, I was really hoping the DLC wouldn't have quests that you can fail by playing the game normally.
- Anonymous
Unlock as much crosses of miquella as possible before he abandon his rune and talk every time with ansbach his informations about the lore are very accurate
- Anonymous
I messed up and burned the tree before giving Freja the note. I really want her sword, do I have to kill her now?
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Actual chad of an npc, helped me against the 2 final bosses and basically just went "Im so glad we are on the same side" and on the final boss admits hes absolutely terrified, top 1 npcs
- Anonymous
i helped hornset and now the summon sign for ansbach is absent. i even gave him the secret scroll he wanted . so, what i get locked out? jeez, man. these quests practically require clairvoyance to do properly. i wish i looked up these guides instead of playing blind
- Anonymous
If i kill Leda with Hornsent, can i do the second phase of this quest ?
- Anonymous
Bruh you gain access to the scroll before even knowing Freyja is also there. If it wasn't for this guide, most people wouldn't even know you're supposed to talk to her first before giving the scroll. Either Ansbach disappearing immediately is a bug or just terrible quest design. I dunno which to believe
- Anonymous
Might sound obvious but if you exhaust all his dialogue in storehouse first floor without speaking to Freyja first it seems he will not give you the letter. Talk to her before giving him the scroll
- Anonymous
careful if you give the secret rite scroll to Sir Ansbach before informing him about Freyja it will block Freyja's quest by making Sir Ansbach disappear from the map!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Anonymous
Does anyone have Ansbach's dialogue after you find the Miquella crosses?
- Anonymous
this guy is actually so real. when you talk to him before the final battle he goes "truth be told i am ****ing terrified of whatever is beyond that fog gate, but you stuck it out with me so i'll stick it out with you"
kind of refreshing to see a pureblood knight be the voice of reason in the dlc

DO NOT GIVE SCROLL FIRST, discuss frustration first and then give scroll, DO NOT GO TO LEDA YET, exhaust, freyja, exhuast, back to sir, exhuast, after he says "that's freyja for you" now you can go to Leda...
2 summon signs, help leda or help sir, as of the 4th day of dlc no proper answer on helping Leda, but helping sir will have him assist you for later main group of bosses
- Anonymous
By far the best part of the main quest. Specially by how he even calls out how stupid it is.
not a diss on the other character designs and VA's by any chance, but they were used poorly.
Interestingly though, can't picture this guy being like Varre at one point. He don't seem to be tarnished, so he probably didn't had a maiden to kill, so what was his ritual I suppose? very intriguing guy all in all.

You CAN progress the questline after burning the sealing tree so it has to be something else that locks you outta progressing his questline.
- Anonymous
Entering Messmer's arena before doing the npc quests ****s them up. Leda wants to kill Hornsent, but their signs won't appear, and because of that, I can't access the Ansbach vs Leda event either.
- Anonymous
If you gave the scroll first, just reload the area. TP to the nearest grace and run back. He immediately gave me the letter after that.
- Anonymous
Gave him the scroll and helped him against Leda. Now he's gone and I just found Freyja upstairs... anyone know where he went?
- Anonymous
After giving him Rite Scroll, he (and other NPCs) will disappear. Now you need to kill Mesmer and then, talk to Leda, exhaust her dialogue and go to Storehouse. You will find summon signs.
- Anonymous
there are no summon signs for me in the first floor room, i gave him the scroll so hes gone now, i already exhausted all the dialogue for Freyja. talking to leta just says she needs to eliminate messmer with hornset, she says NOTHING about Sir Ansbach

Does fighting the last boss without summoning him prevent the competion of the quest? I'd like to get his gear and finish up his storyline, but don't want to fight the ultimate boss of the DLC with two broken AIs running around.

Dude just following you around the whole fight and half the time Thiollier doesn't even come in the door. Did the devs even beat the boss.
- Anonymous
It's definitely bugged if he vanishes before giving you the letter. If it wasn't and he left for somewhere else then why would the two summon signs be at the spot on Shadow Keep. Very disappointed in From for not cleaning up this quest before shipping it out.
- Anonymous
I had found and talked to both Freyja and Sir Ansbach in Shadow Keep before using Messmer’s Kindling, but completed this quest line from the Secret Rite Scroll on after using the kindling.
- Anonymous
Is it required to summon him and thiollier during the final fight to get their drops?
- Anonymous
Gotta love a npc that when summoned just sits there idling and slow walking 10/10

never thought i would die fighting side by side with a servant of Mohg

Talking to Ansbach doesnt give me the letter for Freyja, the 2 dialogues are exhausted (i havent gave yet the secret rite scroll) anyone know a solution ?

if I assist hornsent and don't get a fight between leda and ansbach, but i still do the rest of his questline, does he still help me in the end fight?
if you gave him the scroll before talking to Freyja don’t worry just defeat messmer but don’t summon hornsent then talk to leda

He has my eternal gratitude for helping me beat that stupid gank

I gave him the scroll before talking to Freyja in the storehouse and now he's gone? Any clue where I can find him?

if i choose to help hornsent fighting leda, will i still be able to help ansbach against leda in the storehouse?

does anyone have ANY idea where ansbach goes if you didn't give him the scroll? im at the final boss fight and I missed giving it to him because I didn't know. am I just screwed, does he show up anywhere else? i cant find him anywhere.
