Those Who Follow Miquella
NOTE: Some steps of this quest are missable and you may be locked out of its progression if you progress further into the story. The first phase of this quest needs to be completed before you burn the Sealing Tree at Church of the Bud. You can refer to our SOTE Walkthrough page for more information. This quest includes the progression of Needle Knight Leda, Sir Ansbach, Moore and Redmane Freyja.
First Phase
The quest begins after defeating Mohg, Lord of Blood in the base game. You will find Needle Knight Leda, a character donning a white robe standing next to the cocoon in the Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum. Talk to her to preface your journey to the Realm of Shadow. She introduces herself as Leda and invites you to join her, and other followers of Miquella the Kind to trace his path. To start your journey, she tells you to touch the withered arm. You will then be transported to a familiar, yet new region. The first thing you will do is to look for her allies throughout the Shadow Realm.
Needle Knight Leda
You will find her at the Highroad Cross - Site of Grace in Scadu Altus. She informs you that Sir Ansbach needs to be eliminated. From here, you will have a choice of assisting Needle Knight Leda, or Sir Ansbach in an upcoming fight. You can join this fight by returning to Sir Ansbach's last location at the Storehouse, First Floor. Choose to be summonsed to assist Sir Ansbach by interacting with the golden summon sign. This makes Sir Ansbach available to assist you in the final boss fight. Otherwise, the red summon sign will make you an ally to Needle Knight Leda.
Defeat Needle Knight Leda to receive Ansbach's Longbow and Leda's Rune. On the other hand, if you choose to assist Needle Knight Leda, you will receive an additional reward: Retaliatory Crossed-Tree.
Redmane Freyja
Redmane Freyja is located at the Three-Path Cross due north of the Gravesite Plain - Site of Grace. She will speak to you about how she intends to journey alone and assure you that she will not cross any of Miquella's followers. Ask her what she's going to look into, and she will mention the vow that Miquella once made with General Radahn. She seeks to know the nature of the vow. Then, continue the conversation by asking her "What if you become our enemy?", she will reply that she will be true to her word. Make sure to exhaust all of her dialogues before leaving the area.
You will find Redmane Freyja again at the Shadow Keep, on the Storehouse, Seventh Floor. You will find her crouched low and attempting to read scriptures off a stone. Talk to her and exhaust all her dialogues. Then, speak with Sir Ansbach on the First Floor.
Take the Letter for Freyja from Sir Ansbach, return to her location at the Storehouse, Seventh Floor, and give it to her. Exhaust all her dialogues to receive Golden Lion Shield.
IMPORTANT: Not giving Freyja the Letter for Freyja will lead to her death and ending her questline.
IMPORTANT: You will not be able to obtain the Golden Lion Shield if you don't deliver the Letter for Freyja.
Sir Ansbach
Sir Ansbach is located at Main Gate Cross - Site of Grace, in the steps before entering Belurat Tower Settlement. He introduces himself as Ansbach, someone who used to serve Mohg but has been guided by Kindly Miquella. Exhaust his dialogues and talk to Moore behind him.
To progress his questline, go to Shadow Keep and retrieve the Secret Rite Scroll from the Storehouse, Fourth Floor. It can be found on a desk behind tall bookshelves. Then, return to Sir Ansbach at his new location in the Storehouse, First Floor, exhaust all his dialogue options, and tell him about Freyja to accept the Letter for Freyja. Proceed to give the Secret Rite Scroll to Ansbach.
IMPORTANT: Be sure to mention Freyja when speaking with Ansbach before giving him the Secret Rite Scroll as he will leave his location, not giving you the Letter for Freyja and locking you out of her questline.
Return to Ansbach after taking the letter to Redmane Freyja and exhaust his dialogues.
Moore
Moore can be found at the front of the gates to the Belurat, Tower Settlement Site of Grace sitting by some boxes and barrels accompanying Sir Ansbach. You will have to purchase something from him and you will unlock the "Talk to Moore" option to learn that he enjoys finding things as well as talking about Lady Leda, and the Forager Brood. When you rest at the Site of Grace, you can speak to Ansbach about Moore and he will give you more lore information about him.
IMPORTANT: Killing a Forager Brood will lead him to invade you.
After meeting Moore, make your way to Thiollier who can be located at the Pillar Path Cross Site of Grace. Speak to him and you will learn that he requires the Black Syrup from Moore. You will need to exhaust his dialogue options and he will give you the Black Syrup that Thiollier needs. Return to Thiollier once more, and he will exchange the Black Syrup for Thiollier's Concoction.
IMPORTANT: You will need to complete this before burning the Sealing Tree
Second Phase
IMPORTANT: The second phase begins after burning the Sealing Tree using Messmer's Kindling. You can't progress the questline after burning it so make sure to get the previous steps completed.
After reaching Needle Knight Leda's location in Enir-Ilim, make sure to summon Sir Ansbach to assist you in the fight against Miquella's followers. Interact with the gold signs here, and if you have progressed Thiollier's questline, you can also summon him here, giving you 2 cooperators for the fight.
Leda will start to doubt whether Miquella's followers are devoted to him or not, so she asks you who you think she should go after. You can suggest Thiollier, if you have met him already, Hornsent or none at all.
- Choosing Thiollier: Leda will believe that Thiollier is no threat to her and will be removed from the options.
- Choosing Hornsent: It will lead Leda to go after Hornsent and they will fight in Shadow Keep
- Not choosing anyone: Reload to the area and speak with Leda again and she will tell you that she decided to go after Hornsent
Regardless of what you choose, Leda will still decide to go after Hornsent. Exhaust both their dialogues until they both leave Highroad Cross to trigger the events in Shadow Keep. Rest at a Site of Grace and speak with Leda about what she will do, this dialogue with Leda triggers her and Hornsent's interaction.
Needle Knight Leda will realize that your search for Miquella differs in nature and will try to stop you here. Those who will be fighting you will vary depending on your choices in the game.
- If you sided with Leda on both occasions: Both Hornsent and Sir Ansbach
- If you sided with Ansbach: You have the option to summon Ansbach to assist you in the fight.
- If you sided with Hornsent: You will fight Dryleaf Dane, Redmane Freyja, and Leda.
- When you told Moore after the charm broke and chose the option 'Put it behind you': You will fight Dryleaf Dane, Moore, Redmane Freyja, and Leda.
- When you told Moore after the charm broke and chose the option 'Remain sad forever': You will fight Dryleaf Dane, Redmane Freyja, and Leda. This option will cause Moore's early death in the game.
Eliminate all followers of Miquella to receive Leda's Sword. Then, once you return to your world, you can pick up all the dropped items:
- Moore's Bell Bearing
- Verdigris Greatshield
- Verdigris Helm
- Verdigris Armor
- Verdigris Gauntlets
- Verdigris Greaves
Needle Knight Leda:
IMPORTANT: The Oathseeker Knight Armor set will need to be looted elsewhere.
After the fight, go up the stairs and take the elevator, and speak with Sir Ansbach before you go up to the final fight. Exhaust all of his dialogues by asking him about Thiollier and Mohg. Then, interact with the golden summon signs of Thiollier and Sir Ansbach before entering the boss room. Both of them will drop their items after the fight.
IMPORTANT: It is optional to summon Ansbach during this fight, reload the world and his body will appear in the arena after you have defeated the final boss.
- Wise Man's Mask
- Ansbach's Attire
- Ansbach's Manchettes
- Ansbach's Boots
- Obsidian Lamina
- Furious Blade of Ansbach

Introduction
- Ahh, were you guided here by Kindly Miquella? I am Leda, and like you, I was guided by faith along his honorable path. Touch the withered arm, and you too will be transported. To the realm of shadow, where Miquella the Kind now dwells. My compatriots are there already. Like us, they have heard Kindly Miquella's call. If you can find them, they are certain to lend you aid.
- Come now, touch the withered arm, and travel to the realm of shadow.
- I will not be far behind, may we meet again.

I sided with Hornsent and Ansbach, but in the final fight I had to fight Freya, Hornsent, Moore, Dryleaf and Leda one after the other.
- Anonymous
Godslayer Greatsword can kill Freyja in 2 L2's, Moore in 2 and a few light attacks.

That gank fight in the end is crazy. Up to 5 enemy NPCs, each one having tens of thousands of HP and hitting like maxed level twink. Infinite stamina, infinte focus, infinite oversized rot pots (go f urself Moore)...
And they call me an Elden Lord?!

The age of compassion would be everyone united in one cause like these group was before the great rune broke. Why is this bad?

Spoiler ahead:
Even after helping her against Hornsent and Ansbach, she turned against me and had to fight Moore, Freyja, Dane and Leda. The only thing I didnt do was actually making the first "choice". She ended up choosing Hornsent on her own. I did Thioller and Ansbach quests (which involves Freyja too, damn traitor) too. I could summon Thioller and the Sanguine noble that takes Ansbach's place.

Entering Messmer's boss room removes the Leda and Hornsent duel summon signs because you can summon Hornsent within Messmer's boss room. After defeating Messmer (only with Hornsent summoned maybe?), talk to Leda and she says Hornsent isn't a problem. Rest and return to her and she talks about suspecting Ansbach next.

"who do we kill; honsent or thiollier?".
Player: *picks thiollier*
Leda: "Nah"
Player: *picks none*
Leda: "Ok we will kill hornsent".

Spoiler warning!
For me she actually startet to mistrust the others once miquellas great Rune broke. I did not enter shadow keep yet, just explored Scadu Altus... So based on what is detailed here, this triggers earlier than phase 2.

This is the worst fight in the game because it's the only one where your bossfight can be DIFFERENT from someone else's. All the worst parts of Fromsoft npc quests with a very real punishment for not jumping through 30 hoops in exactly the right order.
- Anonymous
Such a cool fight if you've got your summons. Freyja being the first into battle. Ansbach coming in just as you're about to be overwhelmed by Freya and Moore, the little banter between them.
Sad...forever.

Such a good fight concept with some of the best music and it's all blown away by how aids it is to fight them all

you can say anything, this battle with my boy arns and tholli and the quotes makes me hard any time

Ledas quest being tied to so many people is interesting and frustrating alike.
Looks like I locked myself out of Ansbach's quest by not summoning Hornsent at the Messmer fight because I somehow ended up there before going through the 1st floor of shadow keep. Now she won't hunt him any longer, won't go for Ansbach and just stands at the cross, saying she realized how mistrustful she is of others. No summoning signs at the keep, no progression, nothing.
Leda locked me out of 3-4 other NPC quests and it really hurts, because now, even with a new playthrough, I still don't get all options.
- Anonymous
Apparantly, if you kill messmer and have hornsent teleport to the boss room before you choose a side for between him or leda, at the final fight, he joins leda's side on top of everyone else.
On my run, it was Freyja, Hornsent, Moor, Dane and Leda, since I didn't talk to her again when the rune broke before I beat messmer.

I helped Hornsent against her, summoned him for the fight against Messmer, and he for some reason decided to invade during the big battle and help her out

If you kill everyone but Leda in the bossfight then die, it completes for some reason. Bossfight invasion sign completely disappears.
- Anonymous
Entering Messmer's room removes the 2 summon sign for her and Hornsent in the black keep
I will have to do her quest 3 times to get everything possible because of this, is there any way I can avoid doing that?
- Anonymous
The total breakdown of the fellowship before Miquella is peak fiction, its a more interesting and fun piece of narrative than the actual final boss.
- Anonymous
She bad but I still simp.
Also I don't get the hate for the gank fight, the music and dialogue was peak and was probably one of my favorite fights in the DLC. Maybe my skadoo level was too high to see the issues.
- Anonymous
If that can help other people: I found her and Horsent's summon sign in the black keep, then I explored most of the map before comming back to the dungeon but the summon marks are no longer there, I did not enter most boss room (except for Messmer but I let myself die quickly) but I visited every other dungeon possible, if you find the summon mark, try not to go too far as it seems something can break this quest.

seemed to me that they are all immune to madness and scarlet rot because one cast of scarlet aeonia does around 600 rot buildup so unless i'm fighting malenia, o'neil or placidusax it almost always procs rot on anything on first hit where as against freya at the very least not one but two casts of aeonia didn't proc rot one single time. same goes for madness because i was using vyke's war spear powerstanced with messmer's impaler for the first 2 of the gank squad and hand of malenia for the rest. even with ansbach on my side it was a very rough fight as they all seem to have 3 times to hp of gideon. (most annoying and tanky npc in base game)
- Anonymous
Is helping Hornsent locked you out of Ansbach & Leda fight. I help Hornsent and summon him with Mesmer. Beat Mesmer comeback to the Site of Grace but Leda only left a letter and dipped.
- Anonymous
Didn’t care for this fight at all. I ended up just running away and getting two swings in as they ran up to me, stunning them, which works for just about any npc. But Leda’s magic would constantly end me
- Anonymous
Literally forgot about Moore on my first playthrough and he didn't show up in the fight. Currently about to go in on my second playthrough without talking to/dueling Dane to see if they don't show up either
- Anonymous
Leda doesn't drop any of the Oathseeker Knight pieces, they are found near the Church of Benediction along with it's Breastplate.
Just finished her fight. Seems like she doesnt drop the Oathseeker armor pieces if you've already found the Oathseeker set at the Church of Benediction, she only drops her Chest armor. If someone else can confirm, we should add it to the page.
- Anonymous
You get the longbow if you side with Leda as well. So no point not to currently. Plus you get the paired curve swords with the anime run.
- Anonymous
There, you win. DS1, DS3, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring. Four games without ever having to summon for a boss fight. But you just had to do it. You just had to wear me down. You just had to design a gank boss so annoying, so incredibly frustrating that I just couldn't do it any more. Are you happy now Miyazaki! ARE YOU HAPPY NOW!
- Anonymous
Siding with Leda both times nets you 2 talismans. Everyone else drops their equipment once their quest is complete (and none of those involve choices).
- Anonymous
There is no difference if you sided with Leda on both occasions. In my run I assisted her both times, and fought her, Dane, Freyja, and Moore at the boss fight. There was some Sanguine Noble (not Ansbach) available for summoning before the fight started.
She doesn't drop all the items listed, she only drops her chest armor and her sword, the Oathseeker set can be found at the church of benediction. If you go south from the site of grace "Main Gate Cross" (where you first meet Moore and Ansbach) and follow a path up a rock side, you'll reach the "Cliffroad Terminus" site of grace. Continue going south, south east of Prospect Town, and jump down into the church, it'll be right outside the church.

My decisions on quests made this a 5v1. Firstly, missed leda on hornsent invasion because i accidentally opened the doors to messmer so it was skipped. Then I beat messmer without summoning hornsent, so he ended up in the gank squad. Completed Freja questline so she was there. Told Moore to 'Put it behind him' cos i didnt want him to be sad, so he turned up to the fight too! failed to compolete Thiollier questline cos I didnt realise you had to die to trina 4 times, only didnt once and thought it was miyasaki trolling us. Also Moore constantly barraging you with rot pots, as soon as you heal it he'll instantly throw another. Insanity.
- Anonymous
Quick version: You can almost choose whatever you want and get all rewards. Tell Moore to "put it behind him" after the seal is broken. Complete Thollier's quest to have him assist the NPC brawl.
Siding with Hornsent doesn't get more rewards, you can summon him for Messmer though.
Siding with Ansbach lets you summon him for the final boss, with a little bit of dialogue.
Most common pathing: Side with Leda, then side with Ansbach.
- Anonymous
If you kill ansbach you can instead summon Sanguine Noble Nataan along with Thiollier.

The biggest mistake of this dlc is thinking that people will get to the end with 18 or 20 scadutree seeds level. I got destroyed with my 14 ones

Dont summon this idiot, she will undo any poison or rot you have on relanna.

you need to defeat Messmer before Leda will tell you that Sir Ansbach needs to be eliminated
- Anonymous
So let me get this straight, this entire convoluted mess of interconnected questlines is just to choose your buddies in a future fight? I dont care about summoning NPCs in boss fights and I will probably not care about this future NPC war in my playthrough, so which options give the best rewards? Siding with or against Lena? Im right before the Hippo fight, planning to not summon Hornsent, later kill him with Lena, and later assist Ansbach.

I didnt get all the drops when i finished the fight, anyone else encountered this?

i exhausted ansbach's dialogue before finding and talking to freyja, am I completely ****ed out of getting dane's other weapon?

The biggest issue I had with her group fight was the camera. Whenever Dane (and sometimes Hornsent) rushed me it felt like the camera tipped up to be overhead and turned itself sideways very quickly so I would dodge right into his attacks. I'm not sure if it was the arena design or what (mostly happened near the edges of the arena it seemed). I didn't have this issue when I fought him one on one earlier. It got me killed more than anything else. Very frustrating.

I only got her chest armor after defeating her, any way to get the rest?

i burned the tree before assisting leda with anbach, am i screwed out of getting the npc armor sets?

I assisted Hornsent on the first invasion, i talked to Freyja and Ansbach in the shadow keep and completed their parts (give message from Ansbach to Freyja and give Ansbach the scroll), then exhausted all their dialogues, rested once and they both dissapeared. I teleported everywhere but couldn't find Leda, Freyja or Ansbach, so i killed Messmer with the help of Hornsent. Now everyone is still missing and there is no invasion summon sign on the First floor where Ansbach was, and Leda left her note on the cross grace location. Am i locked out of the Leda vs Ansbach invasion?
- Anonymous
Hornsent can be part of the fight at the end it seems, if you didn't summon him for Messmer I think?

Do you get locked out of Leda's quest if you accidentally meet Messmer....? Because there's no summon sign on the way to the specimen house

Madding Hand +10 slaps in this fight, especially if you're handicapping yourself with a faith+int 150 level build
- Anonymous
if you side with hornsent you can not fight against/together with Ansbach, but you still summon Ansbach for Leda's fight and the final boss if you did the rest of his quest (give him the scroll, talk to Frejya ect)
- Anonymous
In their boss fight, is it possible to kill them with the Death debuff, since they're human NPCs, or are they resistant to it?
- Anonymous
so funny how she breaks free of the mind control that was making her kill people in miquella's name and within literally 5 seconds of free will she just decides to keep doing it and murder all her friends, truly the murderhobo representation we deserve
She moves when you enter the Land of Shadow, not when you kill Rellana. I haven't killed Rellana, but I went behind the castle and she's there.
- Anonymous
Despite doing everything for Freyja and Ansbach, Leda is still standing at the Highcross site of grace talking about going after the Hornsent? I've no idea what to do to trigger the next step of her expressing interest in Ansbach.

Always that disgusting feature in Souls, that nearly every npc dies. I'm glad that ansbach in the dlc remains as an ally until the bitter end

The fight isn't perfect, but I really enjoyed it. It feels like they cashed in on some of the wasted potential that Gideon Ofnir had. Gank fights have always been controversial in the series, but the dynamic enemies and dialogue depending on your choices make it feel more like they matter.

Entering Messmer's arena before doing the npc quests ****s them up. Leda wants to kill Hornsent, but their signs won't appear, and because of that, I can't access the Ansbach vs Leda event either.
- Anonymous
If you are looking for summon signs and finding someone missing or not moving, look around the flaming boats! I just had a hornsent vs Leda summon decision show up near flaming boats in the area directly before taking the lift up to Storehouse First Floor.

The way she talks to the player, she really treats him like a dog.

Finally beat the last boss. Can confirm that Ansbach and Thiollier still drops their armor sets after beating the boss without summoning them for the fight. Though, I am not sure if it is because I tried summoning them for several of my previous fights. But I did not summon them for the winning fight.
Also, I messed up Freyja's quest, she stayed in Shadow Keep because I met Ansbach and did his stuff first, then he decided to leave before I could talk to him about her. I was still able to get her armor where you meet her in Shadow Keep.

How does this NPC's page of all things get so little thought put into it? I know the DLC is new, but in what world are we jumping from meeting Leda outside the egg to the first step of the quest being "Do this thing for Freya in Shadow Keep"? I guess I'm just surprised Leda's page of all things has gotten so little attention or polish.

If you:
Completed Freyja and Ansbach’s questline
Killed Romina before Messmer (no hornsent invasion)

Didn’t do Thiollier quest line
You will get a 2v5 boss fight. I want to die.

I can confirm that you dont need to summon the last two npc for the final fight to obtain the two armor sets and weapons. You just need to progress their quest to the last moment. Took me tons of hours to fight with 2 npcs but no success, I had to solo it (easier for me)...

Does anyone know if I can beat the final boss without summoning Ansbach and Thiollier and still get their items from the quest? I find that they make the fight harder than it already is.
not 5 seconds after the charm is broken on everyone and she immidiently says to me "i should kill people"
