Quest and Details related to Hornsent Grandam in Elden Ring

NOTE: This NPC questline is easily missable and can result in getting locked from her questline and not receiving anything. This questline must be completed before fighting Messmer, the Impaler.

Hornsent Grandam is a member of the people that inhabited Belurat, Tower Settlement. Her kind was put to the flame by Messmer the Impaler. She can be found across the Small Private Altar Site of Grace [Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Map Link] [Video Link], but the door to the Storeroom is locked.

IMPORTANT: Be sure to interact with her BEFORE you fight the Divine Beast Dancing Lion boss.

Players need to find the Storeroom Key [Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Map Link] in order to be able to access her room.

At first, Hornsent Grandam will confuse players with a follower of Messmer the Impaler, and will not continue the conversation until the Divine Beast Dancing Lion at Belurat, Tower Settlement is killed. [Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Map Link]

After the Divine Beast Dancing Lion is killed, players must equip the Divine Beast Head and interact with Hornsent Grandam to be able to talk to her once again. Talk to her twice to receive Watchful Spirit, a new Incantation, and Scorpion Stew. Talk to her again after reloading the area to receive another Scorpion Stew. She will give you another one whenever you don't have one in your inventory. The stew can be given to Hornsent in exchange for x3 Furnace Visages.

Finally, after defeating Messmer, the Impaler, you may return to Hornsent Grandam and speak with her with the Divine Beast Head equipped to receive a Gourment Scorpion Stew. If you rest at the Site of Grace and return to her, she will be asleep and you can pick up another Gourmet Scorpion Stew.

NOTE: This is the only way to receive the Gourmet Scorpion Stew.

NOTEKilling her after having slain the beast and gone through all the interactions will leave behind a Gourmet Scorpion Stew

Dialogue in Elden Ring: Hornsent Grandam

Introduction

  • A-Ah! Who art thou, stranger…?
  • …by the look of thee, another of Messmer's peons, methinks.
  • Tell me, dost thy kind never weary grow? How do these old bones fascinate thee yet?
  • Our lands were by thy kind set aflame, our tower by thy kind veiled in shadow.
  • Thou cam'st, robbing us of all, spoiling all. Have ye not basked in these deeds long enough?
  • Listen, progeny of the wanton strumpet.
  • For thy sins thou shalt have thy recompense — the sacred beast shall unleash its ire.
  • Till then, with this old hag do what thou wilt, for all the good it'll do thee in the end!

Talk to her again

  • For what reason dost thou falter, villain?
  • Enact thy sordid work with fullest pride.
  • Else tuck away thy tail and leave for good,
  • Loathsome issue of the rotten strumpet

Visit (before defeating the Divine Beast Dancing Lion)

  • Be gone! These lands were ours since times of old.

Visit (After defeating the Divine Beast Dancing Lion, but not equipping the Divine Beast Head)

  • ...A-Ah...

Visit (After defeating the Divine Beast Dancing Lion, but with the Divine Beast Head equipped)

  • ...O-Oh?
  • Ah, such a joy to smell this scent again...
  • Does a sculpted keeper stand before me? Ohhh! As I felt the sacred beast's essence fade, a great anxiety welled up within.
  • Forgive this old woman her foolish fears!
  • Tis such a relief, I cannot express.
  • After an eternity of the mind, our voices have at least reached the heavens.
  • As evidenced by thy gracious arrival. Ohh! Ohhh! A-A-Ah, Ohhh!

Talk to her again

  • I implore, vessel of the sacred beast... Have my son accompany thee to war.
  • And dance thy dance of beauteous choler.
  • Take vengeance upon Messmer and his lot.
  • They who betrayed us, aye, they who burned us...
  • Let them face in thy wrath their just deserts.
  • My song will I sing... in service to thee. (Grants Watchful Spirit)
  • Cleanse away the strumpet's vile progeny.

Talk to her again

  • O Sculpted keeper, channel thy choler, into the most resplendent of dances.
  • My song will I sing... in service to thee.

as a non-native English speaker who does play the game in English, it’s really hard for me to understand what she’s saying. Ye Olde Englishe is way too strong.

      • Anonymous

How to get scorpion stew. She keeps mumbling about prayer, oh sculpted keeper…. Sing song…. That’s all she says after the incantation; there’s no stew.

        • Anonymous

Interesting note, in the watchful spirit incantation description she is referred to as the "Empyrean" grandam.

          • Anonymous

"Near the grace" wtf are these people talking about sometimes? Go down the hall where the guys shoot swirls at you.

            • Anonymous

This is NOT an easy questline to figure out, please Fromsoft let us be able to complete it after killing Messmer

              • Anonymous

This is a dumb quest to be locked out of. What's the reasoning that we can't start her quest after killing messmer? I couldn't care less if the dialogue wouldn't match up. It isn't gonna break the game. I just want my reward.

                • Anonymous

I got the incantation in a completely different way:
Didn't talk to her before killing Lion
Came to her, she was "sleeping" and didn't talk to me
                  Killed her
                  Got incantation

Didn't use Beast head or anything else, literally didn't speak to her at all

                  • Anonymous

This is her dialogue if you forget about the key, kill almost all the bosses, remember "Oh hey what's this key do?" and then go back to find her.
                    "..."
                    "..."
                    "..."
You can't kill ever kill her.
                    Ng+ here I come -_-

                    • Anonymous

Just found the room after beating the game. I wear the head and try to talk to it, but I just get "..."

I try to attack it, but the game acts like it's concrete and nothing happens...

                      • Anonymous

After defeating Messmer you get a stronger scorpion stew.. then she sleeps, does she ever wake up or is that the end of her quest?

                        • Anonymous

After killing the final boss go back to her and exhaust her dialogue for 2x gourmet scorpion stews. At this point she’s permanently asleep I think. I haven’t tried attacking her and I’m still seeing what else can happen.

                          • Anonymous

killed mesmer before talking to her, she only says "...". Shes also invincible so I can't even kill her for the incantation lol

                            • Anonymous

I mean...I knew Marika was not a great person from the events of the base game, but wow the DLC's lore additions really shed some light on just how deeply horrific she was. By all counts, the Hornsent just seem like...people, chillin' with their other tree in their land of Light and Shadow. Not perfect, not saints, just people. And she sent her son to invade their land and murder them...all of them. That's some dark stuff. Oh wait...Miyazaki...you are gonna do it, aren't you? ER 2 is gonna be a prequel where Marika is just murdering every other faction...and we're gonna be the ones doing the killing. :/

So I forgot to go back to her after getting the key, and then I killed mezmer, and now when I go back to speak to her for the first time she just sleeps and I can't do anything. Did I screw myself?

                                • She asks us to "have my son accompany thee to war" before giving us the spirit incantation... is this implying her son is the spirit? My first thought was her son is an NPC we are meant to meet further in the game but have yet to come across another Hornsent character apart from Hornsent himself (the Miquella follower) but theres no mention of their relation in dialogue or Item Description, nor is their any mention of him being an Empyrean, unlike Grandam...

After beating Messmer the Impaler you can return to her and recieve a better version of scorpion stew. At reloading she will give you more and will take a nap. Now she is sleeping and I cant get more

                                    • Anonymous

This is her dialogue after being attacked before fighting the Divine Beast Dancing Lion.
(Uses Watchful Spirit incantation to attack the tarnished/player)
"Well! 'Tis no surprise. Thou hast thy choice made!"
"Act as thou wilt, but still must I ask... Is killing me truly within thy pow'r?"
"Didst thou imagine I would beg thee cease?"
"Nay, nay, do what thou wilt to this poor soul!"
"Heaven shall judge thee all for thy deeds!"
                                      "Aaaaaargh!"
(Whispering voice after falling over on her seat)
"A curse upon thee, rotten miscreant."
"A curse upon the strumpet's progeny, upon Marika's children each and all."
"The curse of the omen shall strike thee down..."
"In the form of the sacred beast's ire."
                                      (Upon talking to her again)
                                      "May the curse strike thee..."
                                      "To the very last..."

Apparently missable quest since she only says "..." when I talk to her after defeating the two bosses of her questline. Or are there any outs?

I think if u kill Mesmer before talking to her ur not gonna be able to interact with her anymore even if u have the head equipped, at least for me this happened

Has extra dialogue if you attack after equipping the divine beast helm but dont kill her and stay in the room
