Unfortunately, I fully upgraded this spirit ash, and then proceeded to take it into the boss battle with the tree spirit below volcano manor. I don't know if it's buged, but fully upgraded Hilde was doing level 1 upgrade damage, around 25dmg per hit, to a tree spirit that's weak to fire. Right now ,t's not worth the runes to upgrade unless buffed.

My experience has been that he really likes to walk slowly at things. Meaning that while he's good on paper, against any boss that's very mobile... which seems to be most of the bosses in the base game endgame, and most of the DLC.

This can be found on a corpse while exploring the rafters above the Storehouse. The corpse is on a ledge above a pair of lifts/elevators (one lowered, one raised) near the fire knight. Activate the lift closest to the corpse and let it descend. Then, activate the other to raise the first lift back up. Quickly jump/drop to the roof of the lift and ride it until it stops. You can jump to the corpse from the lift's roof.
