It is said that a blind swordsman was the originator of this technique — the art of allowing one's opponent to strike so as to leave them vulnerable to a well-timed reply.

    • This is actually not that bad for curved swords (if going by "naming theme vs effect"), but definitely not their main appeal. Curved Swords (and straight swords) have very, very fast guard counters, which makes them easy to abuse on most common enemies. So a damage increase is honestly not that bad (albeit you can get better talisman options for those weapons down the line).
However, since a % damage scale is better on weapons with high attack power, I can completely understand the reasoning behind people saying it's not "suited" for curved swords (specially since you'd want to dual wield them). But it's not as bad as they make it be, at least.

PvP? Golden halberd. Better stability than most great shields and wins trades against collosals. Pretty sure 1.10 gave guard counters hyper armor since I’ve poised great swords and won. Guard count was into R2 is really good roll catch if they roll away. Miquella Knight sword second place for pvp guard counters but Golden Halberd is now king. Mace is third for pvp cause it catches jump attacks/rolls and r2 has one handed hyper armor to synergize with shields. Range holds back the mace, hyper armor holds back Miquella knight sword and L2 holds back Golden Halberd.

          >Curved sword talisman: meant for shields
          >Twinblade talisman: **** for twinblades.
          >Greatshield Talisman: Best for weapon-blocking.

The only Souls game I ever used a shield was in DS1 so I didn't even know Guard Countering that this talisman was referring 2 existed. I legit thought this was referring to the curved sword parry. I'm more of a large weapon user but I wanted to make a paladin esk build and learning this shield counter is a thing gave me an idea. Blood Knight. Get that thorn shield, give it a decent physical skill, a bleed weapon (hammer/mace prob/arcane estoc thing), and blood/thorn sorceries. Done.

How is this associated with the blind swordsman? Nothing references him using a shield and the Warrior class cosplaying as him uses a dual wield technique that you can’t block with.

Pretty good in PvP for curved swords and straight swords, great in PvE for the same reason but more so only on lesser bosses and regular enemies. For bigger bosses it’s best not to try and guard counter them unless they’re slow, which the vast majority of bosses in Elden Ring are not that.

                • Tired of crouch poke spam? Slap this bad boy on a sword-and-board build. Straight sword guard counters are sometimes fast enough to hit them before they can roll out and are also not bad for roll-catching light weapons.

Some different opinions on whether this will only work for curved swords or will benefit curved and straight swords, with both getting the 20% damage increase in the guard counter. I'm curious myself because this is one of a handful of talismans I use most often, obviously I don't want to waste a slot on a talisman that has no benefit. Does anyone have a definitive answer one way or another?

This talisman and barricade shield make light work of the nights cavalry. ( likely not for the duo fight) that AoW doesn't just allow for an easy guard counter on the nights, it also works on the separate attack the horse has, so both of their attacks can be guard countered, it won't take long to kill them using this talisman if you have barricade shield.

Used best with straight swords, imo. Their guard counters come out fast and deal pretty good damage. As another comment stated, you can apply Cragblade, a fire affinity, and stacking buffs to really increase the counters into nuke-levels.

However, I’d say that Cragblade and fire affinity is enough to deal significant damage.

If you want to maximize Guard Counter, I suggest running a high stance damaging weapon and putting Cragblade into it since the AoW ability adds 10% more poise and physical damage, making it fire affinity and adding flame grant me strength adds even more physical and fire damage and if you want even more damage add golden vow and watch as you guard counter and drop a burning rock pillar on your enemies as well as easily securing a stagger.

If you're a melee build with a shield congratulations this is going on your belt and staying there forever, Guard Counters are just that good.

Also it's about the only real support we melee builds got that didn't benefit other builds more.

Guard counter on two handed epee is actually ok in pvp. Stack with spear talisman for 900 damage guard counters when you score a trade. I’ve found it really good at countering crouch poke spam from collosals. Not meta but fun and throws people off. Halberd two handed counter is also ok in pvp, free aim left to to accelerate the attack or to roll catch them since most roll to your left. No one falls for any these a third time tho

It took about two minutes of testing to realize this only boosts the guard counters of ...Curved Swords. (Go figure)

I ran around wearing this as a greatsword user for an embarrassingly long time before really testing it.

Why does this sometimes not trigger? I'm testing with the colossal greatsword in the Gatefront Ruins. Both with and without the talisman. I will sometimes see a damage boost and sometimes don't. I hit r2 immediately after blocking, have tested with distance from target, both sometimes do and don't trigger. Why does this not trigger every time?

I’ve never seen this happen, but can you guard break a player with guard counter, or does that only apply to the enemy npcs’?

Why is this talisman represented by a curved sword? Are curved swords supposed to be particularly good at guard counters or did they just run out of wepaon talismans and spear was already taken?

When I put on this ring I also gain a resistance status boost can anyone else check if this also works for them?

Im about 2/3 through the game and had no clue what a guard counter even was. I did one accidentally and had no idea wtf that was.

                                            • This is one of the very early talisman that we find in the game besides Crimson for HP from the starter items.... "Guard Counter" is something that not everyone even knows how to do and not even myself

                                              • Anonymous

Guard counter: when blocking with shield or blade, immediately after receiving/blocking a blow, press R2/RT and the guard counter animation and sound will play followed by your counter attack. this talisman favours a more defensive/counter offensive dex build who can pull off quick R2’s

                                                • Anonymous

My damage increases from 242 to 291 with this thing. +20%. Very nice.

You have to test it on enemies that don't die in 1 hit. The giants chained to the carriage for example.

                                                  • Tested this on the enemies in stormveil and it doesn't actually seem to increase damage at all. tested it on imps in the catacombs and it doesn't seem to increase the stagger either. not sure what this actually does

                                                    • Anonymous

If you press heavy attack immediately after blocking, you execute a guard counter, which is a strong and fast counter attack.
