Watchdog's Greatsword is a Colossal Sword in Elden Ring. The Watchdog's Greatsword scales primarily with Strength and is a good Weapon for cleaving many enemies at once.

Stone greatsword wielded by Erdtree Burial Watchdogs.

Though decorated with the watchman's eye, the pupil was taken by graverobbers and is now hollow, leaving this sword a mere lump of stone.

Where to Find Watchdog's Greatsword in Elden Ring

The Watchdog's Greatsword weapon can be found at the following location:

Dropped by the sword wielding Watchdogs in the Mountaintops of the Giants.
Giants' Mountaintop Catacombs: Once you enter the dungeon, you will eventually come across a lift. Take the lift down, and then trigger the lift but quickly get off. Another lift will rise up from underneath and by taking that new lift down, you will enter the area with Two Watchdogs as well as other various enemies. The second Watchdog can drop it.
Giant-Conquering Hero's Grave: After entering the Dungeon heading down a short flight of stairs, a Fire Monk will approach from your right. Head right down the hall where the Fire Monk approached from and peer over the windows. There will be a place to drop down. The Watchdog enemy in this room must be led into the light before defeating, but note that it enters a Vulnerable State after entering the light.
Consecrated Snowfield Catacombs: One sword-wielding Watchdog can be found guarding the Imp Head (Elder), which has a chance to drop the sword.

Note: As of Patch 1.08, the Speed of Crouching and Rolling Attack has been slightly increased.
NOTE: As of Patch 1.09, the scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below. Additionally, the speed of guard counters for this weapon has increased
Has a similar moveset to the Greatsword but is much shorter.
- At +25 with a 55 strength and two handing, has slightly less attack than the Greatsword.

  Got 2 of these in a row during my first visit at Giant-Conquering Hero's Grave without any "item discovery" bonuses lol. I guess that is a sign to powerstance them for the rest of the game and probably buy a lottery ticket.

  This is situationally better than Guts Greatsword IF: you want the overhead chop Heavy attack. GUGS moveset has a sideways sweep that takes longer; but Watchdog Greatsword, like some other Colossal Swords, has the overhead chop R2 instead. I personally prefer the overhead chop for PvE, since it's faster. IMO this sword feels better to use than GUGS, and is prettier.

  Because of it's superrior scaling, starting from 54 STR, have better AR than Greatsword under Flame Art and Sacred starting from 78 FTH, for Magic start from 22 INT, for Cold start from 43 INT. This is a Glasscannon Colossal Sword for INT build

  This thing actually is better than the greatsword, yes less range, but its lighter requieres less dex and gets more damage on a High strength High dex character. Still doesnt change the fact that it is later to acquire tho

  the normal guts sword but it's only available at an endgame area from a garbage enemy that you also have to waste your time farming on top of that, along with shorter reach and similar requirements plus being nowhere near as fashionable with its only positive being that it has better heavy/keen scaling, why does this exist?

  All these little whiners who all complain that the GUGS has higher AR, along with better range, and a better moveset as well honestl-ALL OF THEM, fail to realise that this weapon requires TWO WHOLE LESS DEXTERITY POINTS! This means you get to invest more into the best stat in the game rather than waste it on that pussy ****. Yes I am aware some classes start with over 12 dexterity, it's about the principal.

  Fromsoft was brain dead with this weapon. Literally worse than the greatsword in pretty much every way possible except for maybe weight. Harder to get and unaccesable until later in the game. Compare this to the greatsword which is obtainable withing like five minutes. Only reason to use this is for style or because you don't want to be seen with the greatsword.

  You guys know how the whole spirit ashes mechanic increased way in scope at some point in development and how that one duelist in Limgrave used to drop a battle hammer at launch?
  Well I think this just-barely-worse-than-the-Greatsword weapon may have been a guaranteed drop at one point in development from one of the early game Watchdog bosses, where it would've served as the perfect Colossal Sword to use before finding the Greatsword. But alas, in the mountaintops it is now.

  When checking an AR calculator I found that this is actually better in raw AR to the GUGS in Magic infusion for a STR/INT build when you start going to 47+ in either or both stats. Although the Royal Greatsword ends up being better for raw AR, the skill choice is big.

  Outdamages Greatsword with high Str on Heavy Infuse due to Greatsword reaching Low end A scaling with this reaching a moderately high end S Scaling. It will overcome the base damage difference. Same with Standard. Reaching A whereas Greatsword Reaches Low B.
  
  and it's Superior to the Zweihander in both Keen and Quality Infusions. Making this sword the most Damaging Quality and Keen Ultra GS and arguably high DMG Str Greatsword at high stats.
  
  In fact this is probably the most Damaging overall UGS in game at high stats no matter the infusion.

  Very good on a prophet character class that has 10 dex and you can buff this sword with the Electrify Armament. Infuse with heavy for that S Scaling. Then buff yourself with golden vow, Strength-knot Crystal Tear, and Lightning-Shrouding Cracked Tear.
  
  The damage is absolutely insane. The sowrd staggers alsmost every enemy and also is good for guard breaks. Definetely one of the strongest melee weaponos.
  
  I used giant hunts ash of war and Hoarah Loux's Earthshaker with shard of alexander.

  I've only had this drop once and it was the only time I decided to try magic because I wanted to feel like a God for a playthrough and it dropped twice because I died once and went back and got it again but every strength build I do that is most of my playthroughs I farmed the thing for over a hour and never get it and yes I even got so mad at not getting it I went and re spec to 99 arcane with the talisman and fowl foot and another hour still did not get it. So if you have bad luck in real life chances are you will not get it when you want it. But sadly it's not that good on NG+ I re spec my magic build into a strength build after that playthrough and I got my ass handed to me alot BUT this with guts greatsword power stance is pretty fun and got me through NG+ pretty easy just change the ashes of war to the weakness of the bosses and it's a smooth playthrough. Still not as smooth as magic by far but nothing feels as good as beating up a demi God with a huge sword

  The watchdog's greatsword's rarity is highly overrated. Yeah it drops from one of the hardest normal enemies in the game at an 8% chance, but that's only at 100 discovery. At 200 discovery (which is the bare minimum you should at least strive for before hunting any rare drops) that goes up to a whopping 15% chance. With a solid build it'll only take you 6-7 runs in order to get it, and if we want to be REALLY generous with how long it'll take to kill the burial watchdog, it'll take 12-14 minutes to reach odds (at 2 minutes per kill).

  Some of you are going to be shitting bricks reading this, and I'm sorry.
  
  So I was respeccing an RL 125 build of mine today and figured this sword would look pretty good on it, so I decided I'd go and farm it. Went to the mountaintop catacombs, had 11 Arcane, the silver fowl foot, and the silver scarab, I got it first try. Now I'd already farmed it once before on another character so I know how much of a pain this can be to get, felt really lucky today.
  
  But that's not all. I upgraded it to +25, and used the golden effigy to get summoned. I get summoned to the Giant-Conquering Hero's Grave of all places. I **** you not, I didn't have any drop-chance boosting items on and the first Watchdog we kill drops another one of these swords. I'm like holy ****, that's some insane luck. We keep going, find another Watchdog further down, and that mother****er ALSO drops his sword. I got 3 of these, consecutively, and only one of them was with increased dropchance, ain't that some ****.
  
  If anyone on Steam wants one, hit me up.

  Fastest way to farm sword:
  - margit shackle for fire pillar.
  - lot of crystal darts(easy to get free)
  Get to site with two watchdogs, turn one stone and fuze him with darts. Aggro second one to kill first. When they are done you respawn or kill second one (if u can). At 190 disc you have 14% drop chance to get drop. His loot table is empty, its just runes or sword so if u get drop light its gonna be sword. dont get why ppl say its hard to get it.

  It took me way to long to farm this sword. Twenty or thirty runs with 200 discovery. On the bright side, I found the Cat Imp Head alongside, and I would never have dared to farm this one, so it wasn't all a waste =D

  The description already hints that this greatsword is meang to be an elemental one, so don't compare it with gugs any longer as it's not even meant to be a pure melee weapon, despite the s scaling in strength. This one is for int/faith hybrids.

  Biggest advantage this has over gugs is that you can get more than one in a playthrough without needing to go to ng+. Can be nice to have 3 or 4 of these with different ashes depending on the situation.

  Farmed mine in about a dozen tries on NG+4 with 185 discovery (my mama said I shoulda leveled arcane, sorry mama) at Giant Mountaintop Catacombs. Yeah the dogs are tough but with obvious windows it's doable if you concentrate. Recommend Ritual Shield talisman if you are getting chunked too bad as they are slow and you can heal to full easily even in enclosed quarters. Here's my method:
  
  Once you're at the bottom of the lift there's a stake of Marika, so dying after killing the sword watchdog is the play. The run backwards is as follows: Once the sworddog is dead, raise the final pillar to kill yourself on the frost. On approach, you can shoot the final pillar down with a shortbow from the room with the first pillar. The imp in the hallway between the pillars won't aggro you if you don't get near. From the stake of Marika, just run past the first imp and watchdog.
  
  As for why: I love the zweihander but wanted something other than the same as a dual-wield, and this one gives me a hilarious (until it hits you) fatty & skinny swords look. Also think it's cooler to two-hand, and when you buff it it's super colourful due to its width. At level ~250 with 99 str and playing co-op mostly I don't split hairs about AR values, just using what feels cool and fun to use. That being said, I prefer the thrust R2 of the zweihander even though this one has the sexy black knight pop-up second R2.

  This weapon is epitome example of how bad fromsoft balances its weapons. There is absolutely no reason to pick this one over the greatsword which has wayyyy more reach, a some more damage better guard and can be found the first minute you get in the game.

  Dude I upgraded a Great Stars to lvl 24, gave it the Cragblade skill, equipped the heaviest set of armor I could manage, equipped a lvl 24 greatshield with Barricade, equipped a Silver Scarab talisman, and went into the Giant Slaying Hero’s Grave ready to brawl a thousand times over to get that f*****g sword, and it dropped first try.

  Drop rate on this cannot possibly be 8%. The math just isn't mathing. 2 hours farming ar 210 discovery and all I got was experience killing watchdogs.

  Please, for your own sake, do NOT farm this above NG. I waited until past NG+7 to try to grab one for a cosplay build and dear god the Watchdog that drops it is harder than any boss in the regular NG cycle. It has thousands of HP, is immune to status, has seemingly unlimited stance, kills you in two hits no matter what armor or buffs you have, can't be made easier with spirit summons, and requires a long runback to try again. 8% feels like .01% when every attempt takes 5-10 minutes.

  This doesn't have the insanely slow heavy and charged heavy of the GUG. Instead it has the regular downward slam as R2 which is faster.

  People always seem to compare this with GUGS but this one actually has a niche use that might make you wanna use this instead. It's the best blocking weapon in terms of guard boost. With the 2 handed bonus, heavy infused gives you 66 while standard infused gives you 72.

  If the base drop rate for this weapon is at 8%, I'm gonna eat my cat. I killed about 100 of these damn watchdogs in the Giant-Conquering Hero's Grave and never saw one drop at 171 discovery.
  Can someone verify if all of the three watchdogs in this damn grave can drop them? Or even one of them? Or is the drop rate secretly lower and it is stated wrong here in the wiki? It's sooo frustrating to farm these enemies

  There is one discernible benefit I see to this weapon over Greatsword, and that is having a lower Dex req. A Champion start would only have to level Dex once to wield this, vs. 3 levels for Greatsword. But who doesn't start vagabond anyway?

  The bare minimum they would have to do to make this a great alternative to the greatsword is change the damage type from standard to blunt. It also makes lore sense to do so since this is a stone sword from a stone cat statue.

  It may be just my luck, but at 239 discovery, I could not get this thing to drop at the Giant-Conquering Hero's Grave after nearly 30 attempts.
  got it 2nd try at the Giants' Mountaintop Catacombs.
  
  I did some additional grinding to see if this was a fluke (on account of I have no life) and did 20 runs at each location. 0 drops at GCHG site, 3 drops at GMC.
  
  I have seen videos of people getting it to drop at the GCHG watchdog, but it would be cool to see someone do a deep dive to see if there is a difference between the watchdogs at these locations in terms of drop rate - or if my experience is just a statistical fluke (which I am not denying is possible.)

  Even though this scales S in HVY, I still find the Colos. Greatsword more viable in terms of DMG.
  Maybe I'm not using it correctly. Any suggestions in terms of getting the most out of this sword?

  Got it within 7 minutes with 147 discovery.
  Went to Giant-Conquering Hero's Grave and just jumped out the opening next to the fire monk.
  Pass the Watchdog, sit in the circle of light and wait for the imps to debuff, then go for the watch dog after.
  I used the memory of grace to send me back after each time instead of running back every time, saves a lot of time.

  I had one of the watchdogs chase me to an elevator and commit suicide with a plunging attack into the pit beneath it....then saw this appear in my inventory.
  
  Was a pleasant surprise since I didn't know it existed, especially after reading these comments...

  Fought the one in the hero's grave 30 times now with 203 discovery, no drop. More than 99% chance to have seen it by now if the 8% drop rate is accurate.

  Guard boost values on here are wrong, it does not get 66 stability, in your sweet dreams maybe. It has lower guard than Greatsword.

  Giants Mountaintop Catacombs is the best spot IMO, you can jump through the window right after the Fire Monk and survive the fall while landing right in front of the Watchdog. You even get a free critical from the dispelling light thingy.

  This thing is made of stone, gets S strength scaling, and is found far later than Greatsword but doesn't catch up to its AR. It could have been this game's FUGS! But no. Just standard damage. Just an incredibly rare, incredibly lategame, worse version of the Greatsword you can get for free minutes after starting the game. Its base damage is so much lower that despite the higher scaling, it does less even at 99str 2H.
