Ash of War: Giant Hunt is an Ash of War and Upgrade Material in Elden Ring. Ash of War: Giant Hunt provides Quality affinity and the Giant Hunt Skill. Ashes of War can be equipped on Weapons and Shields to modify the Skill, or to apply affinities that modify scaling values.
This Ash of War grants an armament the Quality affinity and the following skill:
"Giant Hunt: Skill developed for confronting gigantic foes. Step forward from a low stance, carrying the momentum into a sudden upward thrust."
Usable on large and colossal weapons capable of thrusting, spears, and twinblades.
Ash of War: Giant Hunt Location in Elden Ring
- Previously dropped by the lone wandering Troll Knight (no longer as of 1.03.02). [Elden Ring Map Link]
- Dropped by area boss in northern Liurnia, Night's Cavalry, between Bellum Church and East Raya Lucaria Gate sites of grace. Only appears at night. [Elden Ring Map Link]
Ash of War: Giant Hunt Elden Ring Guide
- Grants the skill Giant Hunt.
- Provides the Quality affinity, which balances Strength and Dexterity scaling, decreases base damage.
- Can be used with any affinity Upgrade.
- Can be applied to the following weapon categories, so long as the weapon allows skill replacement: Greatswords, Colossal Swords, Twinblades, Heavy Thrusting Swords, Spears, Great Spears, and Halberds.
- Deals Pierce damage, and works with the Spear Talisman, for increased counter-attack damage.
- Despite its seemingly lengthy animation, this skill cannot be charged.
Elden Ring Ash of War: Giant Hunt Notes & Tips
- Giant Hunt provides the highest singular strike damage out of all the thrust Ashes of War.
- Can send medium-sized humanoid enemies flying up in the air, as long as they have no hyperarmor active, forcing long combat recovery.
- Giant Hunt lowers the user's hitbox mid-animation, allowing them to dodge certain enemy attacks.
- This Ash of War is a potent option for roll-catching PvP opponents.

If you're a new player, this is very strong in pvp. Most players haven't leveled vigor enough, so this can oneshot or almost oneshot them

I see people talking about one shotting a lot with this, does that mean it would be a stupid idea of me to try to use it as a combo initiator and follow it up with Dragonclaw?
- Anonymous
I'm surprised you can't put this in the normal thrusting sword class. Wanted this for my cleanrot knight sword as I prefer giant hunt over impaling thrust. Pretty good to reach dragon's heads when they're above you and the stance damage feels superior.

Used this against radahn. Run up behind him and poke him in the butt.

Giant hunt made passing sewers a breeze. 4-5 hits kills every Fatboy with no damage taken. As with most ashes of war it is very situational. IMHO good in close quarters against tough enemies combined with bleed does wonders.

Can someone explain how this ash is supposed to be more effective on "gigantic" enemies?
- Anonymous
Now loses trades to fists. Don’t ask me why a meta build is gonna lose a giants hunt trade into fist nonsense.
- Anonymous
I like how this article says that it lowers the users "hitbox", but what they actually mean is the users "hurtbox", there is a difference.

Very good in PvP if used appropriately. Don't initiate this attack when you're opponent is neutral and far from you, it can be easily out-spaced and countered due to its long start up and end lag animations. It's best used when you're opponent is near you and committed to an animation, this way they cannot dodge it. This attack has good hyperarmor and it useful for trading hits, since it launches opponents you'll pretty much always win the trade, at least when placed on a colossal sword, except in some rare circumstances.

Excellent for staggering dragons. Go beneath dragon's head, giant hunt, profit. Deals bonkers damage, too
Lol, I don't even know this AOW existed until I finished the game...

Did some testing after patch 1.07 and it seems to do the same stance damage as Lion's Claw now. In other words, as a posture breaker it's gone from surprisingly pathetic to top tier. It now has good range, hyperarmour, excellent damage, will knock down most non-massive enemies and pretty much guarantees a stance break if you follow up with a charged heavy. Pretty busted for PVE.
- Anonymous
For the animation it has you'd think it would do some pretty decent stance damage.
- Anonymous
So odd how hard this fell off in pvp. Before, every colossal sword you saw had this equipped, but it was so overused that I think everyone can deal with this easily. Maybe give it some time and we will see a resurgence of this skill.
- Anonymous
can anyone tell me how its damage scales? is it just based off of the weapon level of the weapon its on? or is it from a stat?
- Anonymous
put this on the forked greatsword and call yourself the fry cook
- Anonymous
The perfect ash of war on greatswords. High octane thrust damage, looks stylish. Even though the stance damage isn't high, the stagger damage is nuts.
"usable on: collossal swords" oh wild strikes, why can't you be like this?

can stunlock a lot of bosses. used it to kill malenia on my third try (first two deaths to her bullshit 1hk's that you'll never dodge first try), impressed my wife doing it. now she thinks im good at games. 10/10

8.8/10: High damage, works with the spear talisman, Roll catches PVEr’s to death, a decent mix up in duels, amazing at trading with medium weapons.
Solid and versatile

Oh man this ash is so fricken awesome. It took me a while to find a skill that felt cooler to use on my claymore than lion’s claw, but this takes the cake!

Banished Knight's halberd, Alexander's shard, and spear talisman. The "no u" build for when anyone wants to mash attacks against you. This ash is the slower higher risk trade version of stormstomp. Instead of stunning someone you eat their damage and counter hit them for their entire health bar. Bonus is it can hail mary panic rollers if you misread them rolling into you. Very fun/strong and legitimately balanced ash both in PvP and PvE

Why try when you can just one shot people no matter what? Rob bad greatsword poke good
- Anonymous
At 99 strength there is no damage difference between 1h and 2h, meaning it’s not based on weapon AR and the damage is pulled straight from stats

Killed the cavalryman and he dropped the glaive not the ash of war. My game is completely up to date, have no idea where to get giants hunt I tried the troll it used to drop from and no luck.

This thing KILLS braindead rivers of blood users. Dont forget to point downwards and teabag afterwards, they don't deserve your respect.

I'd hoped this would function like the "square off" R2 but for larger weapons. Unfortunately, though, it seems to deal relatively little poise damage. It's entertaining to pop Rennala into the air repeatedly, but not as useful as square off or FotRM on giant enemies despite being called "giant hunt".
- Anonymous
I have been using it a lot on the Nightrider Glaive before the buff and honestly I don't think it needed a buff. Why buff this with it's absolutely insane poise and damage while so, so many underwhelming ashes of war remain ususable becaus of the state of the pvp?
- Anonymous
Didn't deserve a buff should probably be reverted to how it was in the last patch.

Cool combo I haven't seen on here: After hitting someone with this swap to a weapon with Hoarah loux's earthshaker ash of war and then slam em
- Anonymous
How we know how much damage this does? or any other ash of war?
- Anonymous
I could have sworn I got this from the troll giant pre patch but now it's gone from my inventory. So I went and killed the night's calvalry and nothing dropped. Is this happening to anyone else?
- Anonymous
You can yeet Melania up into the air with this. Feels sooo good

Got me killed when I used it against a Banished Knight. He didn’t get launched, he barely staggered, and before I recovered he was able to charge up his spazz out at the speed of light attack and instat kill me.
I know it’s a good AoW, I hit 1600+ dmg on an invader with my Iron Greatsword and thats without the Shard Of Alex but ever since that Banished knight it left a bad taste in my mouth.

This can probably poke 2nd phase Fire Giant's Eyes while he's groveling.

Reminds me of the good ole days of dark souls 2 iron keep bridge. I launch invaders off cliffs with this.
- Anonymous
Is there any other way to get it? I killed the night cavalry boss before the patch so i cant get it from him. Any help would be appreciated.
- Anonymous
So basically going for the Giant's testicles. Very good technique
- Anonymous
With right weapon can one shot in pvp, even better now after buff.
- Anonymous
Does it deal counter attack thrust damage? As impaling thrust does? It has a potential to scale not only with alexander's shard but with spear talisman too
- Anonymous
Effective against Malenia. It's not a cheese move that can trivialize the fight or anything, but it does huge damage and sends her flying if she doesn't have hyper armor.
- Anonymous
Best AoW for my colossal sword, godlike in pvp and especially for punishing moves with long windups if from up close. Also good heal punish
- Anonymous
So you're basically screwed if you missed killing the troll before the patch. The Knight's Cavalry doesn't drop anything, though eh did respawn.
- Anonymous
Just killed the Nights Calvary and he dropped Ash of war: Ice Spear
- Anonymous
Yoooo this thing for PVE is really good. It will straight up launch/knock down most enemies, even onyx lords or omen ogres, as well as doing heaps of damage. Highly would recommend
- Anonymous
Using this ability basically deletes some enemy types from the game like omens. Knock em up and charged R2 on wakeup. love it.
- Anonymous
Is this usable on Halberds since they are capable of thrusting?
Playing a Faith based invasion paladin and feeling this would deal great damage with big reach on the Banished knight Halberd.
- Anonymous
How can i get this after already killing the night cavalry before this patch and killing the troll knight after this patch??? LOL
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
The damage and speed on this is busted, how come more people aren't talking about this Ash of War?
- Anonymous
does this deal pierce damage? i wodner if this will work with spear talisman
- Anonymous
Super satisfyng to one shot players with this, I hope it doesn't get nerfed.
- Anonymous
Very easy to combo this out of the ultra greatswords crouch r1. crouch r1 - wait for them to panic roll - Giant Hunt = usually dead phantom/host

J'avais deja cette compétence en tuant le cavalier, j'ai obtenue TROLL KNIGHT SWORD sur ledit chevalier troll

Is this basically the greatswors stance R2 from DS3? I keep finding comments about people using this on greatswords since square off is locked to straight swords.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
It does thrust dmg allowing you to extra damage if timed well. It also ducks under some attacks making this quite a nice skill.
- Anonymous
I found this post-game randomly and I gotta say I'm really annoyed I didn't find it sooner. Hits like a damn truck.
- Anonymous
I'm one shotting people on PVP with this on a +25 Greatsword, looks like 60 Vigor won't be enough for meta
- Anonymous
PSA: This can actually stagger crucible knights! Also the Nights cavalry that drops this is the same one that drops the nightrider glaive in liurnia

The animation looks a bit like the charge that the cleanrot knight does in the first trailer

The troll didn't drop the skill and the Night's Cavalry didn't show up at night, Is it bugged?

Good skill, but deals very little posture damage. If you use only this to kill a boss, chances are you would kill the boss before breaking its posture.

Just got it, dropped from the Night's Cavalry as of 8:00pm Est

Do we manual aim this or free-aim it in PVP for roll catches? It seems like I'm failing to catch anything with this.
- Anonymous
It seems like the troll didn't drop it for me on my new character post patch. Curious since I've gotten it multiple times before with other characters. I wonder if patch moved some items around or just broke parts of the game?
I kept dying to that ridiculously overpowered ball bearing hunter in Caelid. No combination of weapons I had seemed to do much. Then I put this on my Knight Greatsword +21 and reduced his health by half in three hits (plus a critical from his stance break), before he could even finish his invading animation. It was very satisfying.
