- Can be applied to the following weapon categories, so long as the weapon allows skill replacement: Twinblades, Spears, Great Spears, Halberds, Reapers
Elden Ring Ash of War: Black Flame Tornado Notes & Tips
- Will grant Flame weapon affinity by default, reducing base damage as well as strength, and dexterity scaling in exchange for adding faith scaling and fire damage.
- If used uncharged, the player will slam their armament into the ground after a lengthy windup, creating a high damage short-lived AOE around the player, knocking most moderate-sized enemies into the air.
- If charged, the player character will spin their armament to create a fire tornado around the player up to 5 times, with each hit dealing fire damage and applying the black flame debuff (Take damage equal to a % of your max hp over a short period of time) before slamming their armament into the ground.

Love trying to fight Elden Beast online and some mouthbreather decides to use me as a distraction while breaking their L2 button. Combined with there being no boss rematch function, it really makes you FEEL that PvE balance doesn't matter.

The Black Flame Ritual spell provides an excellent setup for this attack I’ve found. Gives you some protection while you’re winding up and can even provide extra damage

Do I understand it right: with Nightriders Gleve and Black Flame Tornado there is a Faith scaling?? When I look in the specs of this AoW there is only strength and Dev scaling…
- Anonymous
Can you use this to cheese elden beast at rl1 or will the damage output not be worth it?
- Anonymous
Put this on a weapon with innate bleed (grave militia saw, cross naginata, scythe, or grave scythe), and it's an OP combination as it's a multi hit ash of war.
- Anonymous
You can roll out if you spam the roll button after letting go but before the slam comes down

"Weapon status build ups and elemental damage will be ignored by this skill. Meaning it will not cause e.g. Bloodloss Buildup or deal lightning and fire damage on a weapons set to the Blood or Lightning Affinity."
So, even when infused with Blood status, using this AoW won't proc bloodloss. Hopefully this answers questions about bleed.

You know, if you're looking for a weapon to put this AoW on, don't underestimate Banished Knight's Halberd. AT +24 it's one of the few polearms/twinblades that has a B scaling with the Flame Art Affinity, which this AoW grants by default. If this AoW scales with faith, then that's really good because even at just 30 faith, you can pump out a lot of damage.

the lowest req weapon this can go on is the short spear, at 10 str and dex. useful for summons who are running caster builds but get summoned for tanks like elden beast or fire giant.
- Anonymous
is this.. surely this isn’t… going to apply bleed if you buff the weapon with bloodflame.. please tell me it won’t….

It should be noted here that the godskin peeler has this ash of war by default. It is obtained by defeating the godskin apostle in the windmill village in the Altus Plateau. It cannot be removed unfortunately but if you want to use it way earlier and like twinblades then this is your jam.

You'd think this wouldn't be that useful in duels given how limited the area of effect is and that it has a wind up, but if you sense a player is getting too comfortable getting in close, get in fighting range and roll past any attack of theirs towards their back at an angle (so their character model must turn quite a bit if they follow up) and as you exit roll whip this out. If they didn't spam press R1 at the right moment or dodn't dodge in the right direction they're going to be trapped. Just be careful on high poise targets they might get a free action during the flame when stagger resets that will let them evade the full damage or even in some cases hit you with a counteract, likely breaking your attack.
The last guy I hit with this who lived had well over 2400 health and after he took the full move he must've been down to less than 100 hp. He just stopped moving, stared at me for a minute then did the cower animation in a corner. Good sport.

I don't get why people in the comments say you need to level up faith to get it working against the elden beast. Most of the damage are % based. So you need something like 7-10 use to kill it with this ash. That is in ng+1000 with 3 coop or in ng alone. I have 15 faith btw

The range of this AOW will be the same - no matter if you use a short spear or a pike.
The range is in my opinion very small. You have to be very close to the enemy. In my fight with malenia I missed some shots, because she moved, is in an animation, etc. Depressing when it's very close. This AOW is in my opinion better for enemies with more "stationary phases". Also you are locked to the animation. You can abort it at the beginning and before slamming the polearm to the ground, but you will reagardless use 30 FP (or 23 with the talisman). That's a lot!
An alternative: Spinning Strikes with Black Flame Blade!
This AOW will use the size of the weapon. This on the pike and you are like a helicopter in a corridor. It also parry bolts, etc. (see description). And some other good things: It consumes 2 FP per hit (more when you do a strike), you can move, you are not locked to an animation, you can change the angle, when infused with black flame blade (or anything else) + old lord talisman you can hit 9 seconds with the black flame, also other enemies will be hit (when getting encircled), etc.
This AOW reminds me of Bart Simpson and his spinning fists :-D

Did some tests with the troll near Godrick grace:
Everything what increases fire damage (red scorpion talisman, fire crystal tear, flame give me strength, etc.), damage at all (Ritual sword talisman, flame give me strength, Mohg blood talisman?, etc.), skill damage (Shard of Alexander) and a flame/fire-weapon-infusion increases the damage of this skill.
Also a higher faith level will increase the damage (also strength but not recommended). In my tests 1 additional faith level did 17 damage with the +25 Fire Halberd. It's recommended to use the +10 faith level-tear (and the fire tear).
Don't mistake faith with holy damage!
Be aware: Using this skill costs 30 FP! Maybe it's woth using the Carian Filigreed Crest to reduce it to 23 FP.

i wish there was a blackflame aow that worked on curved swords

Saved my ass in a 1v3 invasion, my only gripe with it is that it debuffs your weapon without applying any buff of its own.
- Anonymous
Some MF invaded me using Lionell Set and Nightrider's Glaive with this AOW. He kept spamming this AOW expecting us to be dumb enough to trade hits with him like most ROB users do. Well, I did, with a trusty Giant Hunt halberd by my side. The dude got yeeted 3 meters into the air then died in agony. Looks like somebody failed Vigor check.

This will kick EBs a** 10/10 times. His windows are perfect for a full charge, and the %hp deletes his chonky healthbar.

Does this do bonus damage against Radagon/Elden Beast like the black flame incantations?

Does anyone know if using Black Flame Tornado will apply blood loss if the weapon has bleed?

I killed Astel, Natural-born of the Void in just three casts. 60 str, on heavy nightrider glaive. It's cracked, I'm telling you.
- Anonymous
Been using it against malenia, I love it. You don’t need to pump big str or faith, the black flame is percentage dmg. It’s like a bleed if u manage to pull the whole thing off. Pump vigor, pump defense, pump poise w heavy armor. Shove it in. It’s also possible to cancel this move by rolling, meaning you can dodge out, then counter with it again, and even if interrupted, you still hit with black flame and cut at least 5% max hp. I believe it’s best used with a reaper since those have innate bleed. I often coop with bleed builds, so I’m not sure if the weapon art prove bleed. But w no fp, you are still slashing with the weapon. Maybe it does. I pair it with another weapon that has knock down, then I use it as they stand up

After the last update this AOW is monstrous. Try finding a weapon that can scale at B or A and pump up your Faith to 99 since the Ash of War has a damage multiplier based upon your Faith stat meaning the soft caps do not affect it's scaled damage and at 99 Faith with a B or A scaling weapon the Ash of War will absolutely melt everything including end game bosses and is viable in PvP. I've seen someone use it against Rykard and do up to 20K damage in mere seconds.
- Anonymous
There's no good reason to not allow one of the two int affinities with this

19k damage on fire giant ng+3 second phase fully charged. Hit both of his legs and saps his health.
Boss destroyer.

Can this be reapplied to the Godskin Peeler so I can change its affinity or do I have to keep the inferior default stats if I want this Ash

Ok something weird is going on either with this ash of war or all of them, as it does 1000 more damage on twinblade compared to a spear with higher damage and 2000 more on scythe that deals 60 more damage then spear, either this ash of war,or all of them also significantly differ in damage depending on what weapon class you put it on with, scythes and presumably lance (only infuseable great spear) and halberds being best options....
- Anonymous
would this on keen with high dex or on flame art with dex/faith put out more damage? just wondering

alot of people roll behind me its a good idea if your fighting a guy who likes to roll behind you
- Anonymous
This seems to override existing buffs on the weapon like bloodflame blade. Alas, I can't have both red and black fires on my weapon.
- Anonymous
Very useful for dealing with ganks and bosses or enemies with high health, but dangerous against bosses that are fast and can't get staggered like Godfrey. But very good for Malenia
- Anonymous
I've been helping so many people beat Malenia with this on my Grave Scythe.
You can pretty much land the entire charge on her and even knock her down if timed right after her heavy strike attacks.
- Anonymous
Does the damage scale with your Incant scaling or just weapon damage overall?
- Anonymous
Try it with the Grave Scythe. Fire or Flame Art, depending on if you're strength or faith.
- Anonymous
After the buff one of the most dangerous defensive ashes of war: has very good hyper armor and the initial weapon hit can catch opponent even easier, with charge tornado stunlocking until the slam finish dealing very high damage and still being able to roll out of it canceling the animation.
On proper build will 100% one shot even the tankiets opponents especialy if they wont dodge the final hit, mind you its still one if not the best skills for killing bosses...
- Anonymous
this saved my first blind playthrough.
final boss was a tough nut to crack, but if you get the full weapon art off it deals upwards of fourthousand damage. Really nuked the damn cosmic tree slug
- Anonymous
hey you, yes you! angry that your bleed build wont destroy the final bosses due to resistances? got some larval tears to spare? then boy howdy do i have an ash of war for you
- Anonymous
If I infuse this on a twinblade with Quality affinity, what determines the damage the black flames do?
- Anonymous
This absolutely shreds Elden Beast, especially when there are 3 players and boss HP gets inflated to insane levels. This thing will make a quick work of him
- Anonymous
Nice how Prophet starts with the only weapon they could put this on without any stat investment
- Anonymous
This is extremely effective vs big HP bars. And by big I mean when host summons 2 players and already tanky boss gets his HP inflated to the point when anything other than bleed or frost stops being effective, because bleed and frost deal % damage when they proc. This here, also does % damage, and not only that, but a pretty ****ing big %. I daresay, it does around 10k damage to Malenia when there are 2 summons and a host, which is a huge number. But when I tested it alone on some random Cleanrot Knight, it did measly 2.3k
So yeah, bigger boss HP bar = the deadlier this weapon art is. I bet it will work wonders vs Elden Beast.
- Anonymous
I've done some testing and this skill appears to be doing more damage when used on reapers for some reason. Twinblades, spears, great spears and halberds all do the same lesser damage.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
anyone who cant beat the final boss must use this skill to beat the game , I recommend anyone regardless thier stats
- Anonymous
This thing is the ultimate Malenia killer on a pure faith build, not only does it do like 8k damage but also staggers her for the entire duration if she's idle when you begin the attack and then launches her into the air so you can chain them as long as you have FP.
- Anonymous
Can be used on halberds, spears and twinblades!
Wind up is a bit annoying, but if you can guarantee that atleast half the full effect will land then it does surprising amounts of damage! There does appear to be some hyper armor that aids in landing the full effect.
Best used when surrounded or against large bosses. It hits several times a second all of which have slight stagger effects which help land the full effect on lighter poise enemies. Most notably other players. Ending in a knock up effect great for finishing off targets with another AoE or charged attack to deal with I-frames on getting back up.
I don't fully understand scaling on weapon art. I am 40str/dex and 20 faith but this hits just as hard as any weapon I have built for str/dex. I didn't change the scaling to heavy or anything so the base weapon still deals fire damage and scales of Faith. Not sure if changing it to heavy will increase the damage of the art but if does it will be fantastic!

Would be nice is this applied blackflame blade for 6 seconds on completing the WA.
- Anonymous

If you're a pure faith build, this Ash of war lives up to its name as the godkilling black flame - at +25 and 60 faith, it easily deals 3-5k damage to end game bosses in one full charge, as long as they're not fire resistant. Against weaker enemies it deals smaller but still significant damage, and fully charged will kill most of them.
The spin hits 2-3 times a second and staggers enemies as a normal hit would, and the last hit knocks up small and medium enemies, and some a bit bigger than you.
- Anonymous
Can this be applied to reapers? Since other AoW like "Sword Dance" and "Double Slash" also mention "polearms" instead of "halberds", this should work right?
- Anonymous
If the boss has a long recovery after attack or can be stunned after a parry/riposte shreds through health (even better for weapons with innate bleed on non arcane builds to save bleed procs for regular attacks), less useful as defensive aoe option against small mobs, don't use on big enemy types that has attacks that prevents staggering them to death, might be ok for surprise attack in invasions (?), absolutely useless in duels...
- Anonymous
Can you really equip this on Polearms/Halberds? Only examples I've seen of this are used with Twinblades
want to let you guys know that its stupid stong on dragons, named ones, i dont know why but like 4 full charges killed the names glintstone one if you get it right you get a free charge at the start of almost any sleeping or idle dragon fight.
- Anonymous
So is this the only way to get a faith scaling fire weapon? Besides the prelate ash of war that you put on colossal axes and hammers
- Anonymous
It's kinda meh. The final blast knocks enemies into the air which is nice, but it's pretty slow for what it does overall. One other unfortunate consequence is that using this Ash will wipe any weapon buffs you've applied, so if you've put Blood Grease or Bloodflame Blade or anything like that on your weapon, that's gone after you finish the Tornado.
Would actually be really nice if it left your weapon enchanted with Black Flames for a while after the cast, like Lightning Slash and Flaming Strike do for their respective elements, but it is what it is.

This Ashe of War comes from the Godskin Duo boss. It is a fairly hard boss by the way, a lot of people struggle with this one and can't get past without a level 10 mimic or other good teammates. It is kind of a bad skill, but it has niche uses. It is really easy to get knocked out of it before you get any damage off in basically any boss fight. However, it's pretty sick and fashion wise it looks really good with scythes. An important thing to note is that the "Flame Art" typing is not the same as "Fire" typing. There is no fire typing available if you assign this ashe of war. However, the "flame art" makes the weapons scale with str, dex, and faith. This is very interesting and unique because it allows the player to give a weapon faith scaling (that otherwise wouldn't, like the grave scythe or regular scythe) AND also not force the weapon to be "sacred". This allows the player to still imbue their weapon and maintain good faith scaling.

Black Flame is associated with Godslayer incantations. So does this benefit from the Godslayer's Seal? Is that even possible?

I'm sorry to ask, but does anyone know where this is located? I'm very interested in this weapon art. Thank you in advance if anyone happens to know!
unlike other black flame spells, it doesn't reset the black flame every hit, so the damage stacks higher and higher the longer you channel it
