Elden Ring Ash of War: Phantom Slash Notes & Tips

  • Locking on and sprinting sideways or backwards before using the skill will send the phantom towards the target while moving you to the side or back. Useful for hitting enemies during lengthy combos/abilities (e.g. Rivers of Blood's Corpse Piler, Waterfowl Dance, Bloodblade Dance, etc.)
    • Sprinting sideways (left/right) will send the phantom towards the target, and send you left or right.
    • Sprinting backwards will send the phantom towards the target, and send you back.
    • Sprinting diagonal forward (left/right + forward) will send the phantom to the target, and send you right/left of the phantom.
    • Sprinting diagonal backward (left/right + back) will send the phantom to the target, and send you backwards to the left/right.

y’all this thing is bonkers. I use it on a grave scythe w/ flame art infusion, FGMS, GV, Flame scorp, Alexander’s shard, and a 4th QoL tali of ur choosing. I prefer bullgoats, to tank through a hit or two with fashion souls armor & finish the wombo combo. Stat spread doesn’t matter much. U can dump strength and go fire instead of flame art. Would probably scale the ghost dmg better too since it’s a projectile… I think that’s how it’d work. Not positive. But I went flame art bc it gave me higher overall AR w/ my str/fth reaper build.

Anyways, I scored my shortest (by 2 seconds, but still) boss run ever (at least, appropriately leveled boss run) against Maliketh with this setup. the clip was 34 seconds, but the fight itself was 22 seconds (26 if u count the time it took to skip the cutscene between phases.) I think I was like lvl 115. So not underleveled but not overleveled either. It was also the most brainless instance of LT mashing i’ve ever committed (I think I dodged literally once during the entirety of that bloody slugfest; yes both phases) yet ‘twas an extremely glorious sight to behold. It was also my first attempt at him using this build (albeit my fourth character so far from first attempt ever), so I was proud even though I did literally nothing skill wise.

Final note: don’t sleep on the little directional movement freedom tech. u can use it to get cheeky cheap shots in all sorts of situations. Like the apostle’s BFT, send ur clone in kamikaze style while u dash away to live & fight another day. U can also do this during his phase change. But I usually full send on his phase change since majority of the time i’ll stance break him out of it if i’ve been aggressive enough. I’ve managed to dodge a godfrey suplex doing it too. On top of doing it w/ intention, u can also do it as an ‘oh ****’ panic sort of thing if u accidentally get too spam happy and are about to charge merrily towards imminent death. Aight i’ma stop rambling. The skill looks badass, stance breaks well, and hits harder than Michael Jai White in Blood & Bone.

If you hit with the full first part... oh man, I mean it should do a lot of damage for how easy it is to dodge, but if they make that mistake once and you fully commit, literally half of their health is gone. (I've had times where people eat both parts and just get disintegrated, 100-0 just like that)
This is excellent for STR builds that don't like using projectile ashes, but need one anyway. (I know it's quality, but just str or just dex works so shush)
It has pretty low fp cost, safe cause you can just turn away and fly in another direction, and if the phantom comes out it's not stopping even if you, yourself get stunned.
When I found out that beasts roar was dex based I was actually mega upset, like what in the actual f*** from? but then I found/tried this, and then it was ok... I guess (not really, but whatever).

For Dex builds, slap this on a Keen Guardian’s Swordspear using Shard of Alexander and Axe Talisman. Dodge away, use the weapon art twice and delete anything in front of you.

Flame Art Claymen's Harpoon with this stuns Farum Azula Halberd Banished Knights and with the follow up, hits for 3000 damage at with 60 Int and Faith with Alexander Shard and Ritual Sword on.

The notes and tips thing doesnt seem to work, idk if it was patched or something but I still end up attacking the target no matter how I sprint

              • Anonymous

fun thing if you put this on a great sword and give that sword fire grease you can roleplay as pontiff Sulivan (works especially well with s.t. trina's sword as a side weapon)

Tested with a bloodloss weapon and bloodflame blade on the Omens in the Leyndell Sewers, the Phantom Slash hits DONT proc status effects as of 1.09.1!
Also tested with poison armament, same results.

I would like everyone to know that you can hit two different targets if you swap your lock on fast enough

                    • Anonymous

I haven't seen anyone mention this but if you target something decently high up like a dragon's head the Phantom will go upwards and with varying success hit the target. Considering how late you'd get this it isn't very useful to know but it's interesting to see the Phantom launch itself

                      • Anonymous

There seems to be some weird stuff related to scholars armament, rogier's set, and this. Putting phantom slash on a standard infusion clayman harpoon, and then applying scholars armament with Lusat's staff at 80 int while wearing rogiers set produces upwards of 6000 damage on a single phantom slash (including follow up attack at point blank).

                        • Anonymous

Has anyone tested whether the damage type of the phantom's attacks corresponds to the damage type of your weapon, or whether it can inflict status effects?

I don't have a way to play Elden Ring at the moment but a simple test would be to infuse a pole arm with cold / bleed and spam this skill against an enemy, making sure that only the phantom's attacks land.

As for the phantom's damage type, one way to test this would be to infuse a pole arm with lightning and then strike an enemy in the rain. If the phantom's attacks now deal lightning damage, we can expect to see a 10% increase in damage. Simply wait for it to stop raining and strike the enemy again to see if the damage value has changed.

Alternatively, you could work together with a friend and strike them with the phantom of a lightning infused pole arm. Record the damage of the phantom's attacks and then have your friend cast Dragonbolt Blessing. Strike them again and see if they take 35% more damage...

why polearm & twinblade only tho ? anything with long handle like great hammer & great axe should able to use it too.

The phantom holding the Nightrider Glaive makes sense from a lore perspective, but I wouldn't mind if the phantom image matched the weapon you were using.

There is a comment on 31st May at 22:53 mentioning status effects and saying it has 8 hits if you do the full combo. How do you get an eight hit combo from it?

Phantom slash, embodie your inner Jojo and become a Stand User!!

Jokes aside, this ash not only has one of the most wholesome item descriptions in the game but Its also (You should know this by now) very underrated for what it can do.

1.) It has a solid FP to damage ratio: It cost 8 Fp (16 FP in Total) and on average it deal’s around 400-700 damage (For the phantom) and 1100-1400 damage (If you and the phantom hit your opponent) from just the fist input of the ash of war and at the grand cost of 8 FP! This allows this ash of war to a lot more spamable compared to the more expensive ashes of war.

                                  2. Good at aggressing and baiting people: The initial input allows you to close the distance between you and your opponent and it’s great at punishing long animations; While the second input on the other hand is used as a way to punish aggressive players and trade with light and medium weapons.

3.) It looks badass: Are You summoning the ghost of the Nights Calvary’s old instructor in order to join him in a joint lunge at your opponent, Your literally Jojo-ing your enemy to death….Enough said.

8/10: Great at closing into your enemy, High damage for a low FP cost, Great for mixing up your timing and attacks, catch’s people who side-strafe a lot. The issue is that the tracking of phantom slash is very random; sometimes requiring you to stand still for you not to go flying in a different direction, If they could improve the tracking and distance of this ash of war it would be a lot better. (It’s also surprisingly good at punishing Flasks heals)

has status effects, and your mimic tear's status effects also work with it
8x hits if you both do the full combo
take the nightrider glaive and melt things

If you make this a magic affinity or holy affinity does the ash do holy / magic damage or still physical only? Trying to understand ashes better.

                                      • Anonymous

it’s been reported that the phantom slash with also retain any buffs applied to the weapon used by the player (such as Bloodflame Blade).
But does the phantom slash retain the natural properties of the weapon such as innate bleed or poison?

Thank Marika someone decided to add "Sprinting backwards sends you backwards' in the tips. I thought running back would have sent me right, thanks for the clarification, who'd imagine holding left would send you left, huh?.

The fact that u can change direction from where the phantom is going is amazing for roll catching and multi target hitting. Or evasive tactics as well. Love this ash of war

this with dual spears in pvp is so fun. you need perfect timing to land it, but with some talent, you can one shot fairly often in pvp.

Can confirm that the phantom does apply the burning effect from Black Flame Blade, if you have the effect on you of course.

                                                    Insane damage with Guardian's Swordspear +25 (NG+2)

You can use it just before being hit to just send out the phantom and then use it again immediately after being hit.

                                                      • I dont about you guys but to me this literally the perfect kind of ash of war. Is it busted broken to the point where it needs nerfs? Nha. Is it super strong and if you use it right (spacing and timing) you can decimate things with lots of damage?? Hell yes! and it looks super cool. We need more ashes balanced like this.

                                                        • Anonymous

If you dual wield two scythes does your phantom slash hit 4 times (twice per scythe) or not? I’m very curious about this. Thanks.

This is a pretty useful ash of war but you need to be careful using it because it has a fairly long windup and if the enemy you are using it on moves too far it will miss entirely.
I primarily use this to engage an enemy I'd rather not get hit by as the phantom image that attacks interrupts opponents long enough that your attack can connect without much fear of being struck.

You can easily jump up and stand on the top of it where he cant hit you and he wont even despawn because its right next to his spawn, he just runs around and tries to hit you, or will just stand at his spawn point watching you kill him. 2 rotten breaths ez kill

Just a solid skill that hits like a truck, comes out quick and covers distance

                                                                      • Anonymous

Compares to Sword Dance, Phantom Slash covers more distance and deals more total damage thanks to the two-hit followup, while Sword Dance uses slightly lower FP, has better hitbox and a faster startup. Both can rollcatch during pvp and got the poise damage to stunlock bigger mobs, but utility wise I do prefer the Sword Dance.
That said, this looks cool af.

BTW, both you and the phantom have a chance to be blocked by random bumps, smooth slopes are fine but beware on uneven grounds.

                                                                        • Anonymous

If you roll just as the spirit is dashing forward, you can cancel your own dash, which gives you a safe ranged option against bosses with limited windows. The full combo, meanwhile, does fantastic damage and seems to do pretty strong posture damage as well.

                                                                          • Anonymous

I found that by sprinting back and using it while locked on you and the spirit can fly in the opposite directions, but it breaks the spirit's aim quite a bit.
