Ash of War: Storm Assault is an Ash of War and Upgrade Material in Elden Ring. Storm Assault provides Quality affinity and the Storm Assault Skill. Ashes of War can be equipped on Weapons and Shields to modify the Skill or an equipment, or to apply affinities that modify scaling values. Storm Assault can be equipped on thrust polearms, heavy thrusting swords, and twinblades.
This Ash of War grants an armament the Quality affinity and the following skill:
"Storm Assault: One of the skills that channel the tempests of Stormveil. Leap forward through surrounding storm winds and thrust armament downward. The attack will produce more storm winds at the point of impact."
Usable on polearms capable of thrusting, heavy thrusting swords, and twinblades.
Storm Assault Location in Elden Ring
Where to find Storm Assault:
- Stormveil Castle: Starting from the Rampart Tower grace, exit onto the ramparts where the war hawks and explosive barrels are. At the tower on the west side where the second war hawk holding an explosive barrel is, jump up onto the battlements on the north side. There is a corpse visible with an item (Marred Wooden Shield). Jumping down to the walls beneath will allow the player to get to the shield. Jumping down further will land the player on a ledge that will collapse, causing them to fall far below into some bushes. A Silver Teardrop Scarab holds the Ash of War. Map Link.

Probably the worst ash of war for pvp in the game. No one with the slightest idea of what they’re doing is going to get hit by it.

shoutout to the guy that put the AoE poise damage calculation for pvp

Stormcaller is way too strong compared to this one, wtf happened in from office.

Does anyone know if the storm winds from the AoW take on the DoT characteristics of black flame if the blackflame blade is cast on the weapon just before triggering the AoW?
- Anonymous
Wish we got the icy version of this that the knights in castle sol use.

Another slept on AoW. Fast start up, decent range/roll catch for an up close and personal player and not the worst on recovery. Works well in skilled hands, pvp and PvE... Not hardest hitting doesn't mean not good. on a 2h halberd with a good move set this thing just stacks the pressure. Very useful

Considering that Banished Knights jump a mile into the air when they use this, I was pretty disappointed when my dinky little Tarnished legs could only jump roughly four inches into the air

If this ash of war could be performed by reapers it would be fire
its kinda like the storm stomp combo but in one button and also worse.

Why can it only be used on so few weapons? I would like to use this with my dual banished knight great swords

just as bad and OP as storm stomp both discourage aggressive play and act as crutches for people who don't have roll discipline; panic rollers can just Press L2 with broken ashes that have 0 wind-up and escape roll catch chains for free. No skill in this game just press your L2 and spam roll away.

Is this the same special attack Vyke uses on his spear in his Evergaol boss fight?
- Anonymous
Is the damage type for both the wind and the plunge the same as the weapon itself? Curious if it would work with the spear talisman in terms of having counter damage

putting this on a spear basicly turns you into a Dragoon from Final Fantasy~

Storm assault is probably one of the most badass and useful of the quality ash’s of war. Leaping into the while sending out a gust of wind and then completely flattening people, but besides looks this ash of war a surprising a lot to offer.
Hyperarmor: This ash a lot of hyperarmor, allowing you to trade with most light to medium sized weapons
High damage: The damage on this thing is incredible and also consistent; averaging at around 900-1200k Damage.
HAS TRUE COMBO: You know how much I love true combos, if the first gust of wind staggers a player the follow up is guaranteed as long as their in front of you.
For a lot of pros theirs gotta be a con, at high levels of poise they won’t be staggered by the first gust of wind, effectively you can’t combo them into the ash of war. Since the meta of elden ring revolves around poise this makes this ash of war way to situational. A way to buff this ash of war is to increase the poise damage of the fist gust of wind by like 100 so you can at least stagger most players.
7/10: High damage, hyperarmor, true combos, lingering hitboxes to chip aggressive players, and they decreased the recovery animation significantly, good at trading against mid poised opponents; situational yes, but good at what it dose.

Just give this ash of war poise damage. Please for the love of god tell me why does storm stomp have infinite poise damage and other storm ashes like this one can't stagger people with at least a little hyperarmor. From Software...

You could do a lot worse for AoWs than this one, specifically in pvp. It has wind shockwaves both on initial cast as well after the landing stab, and with the decreased recovery it got in 1.04, it's surprisingly hard to punish. Just make sure you have some poise, because you can be stunned out of the startup.
The skill itself, however, is still very telegraphed and rather slow, so actually landing it on someone is going to be tough. Still fun and satisfying pancaking someone with a polearm when it does happen though. Does on average about 1000-1200 on most people I landed it on, which isn't the best but not the worst either.
From what I can gather you need to land the initial wind shockwave at about point blank range for the rest of the skill to combo and connect. Also feels like opponents with high enough poise can roll out of the initial wind shockwave hit. Whilst you're in the air you can turn somewhat, so its possible to turn around and hit someone trying to roll behind you during the skill.
Overall, not a bad skill. Makes up for its shortcomings in cool factor. I'd rate it like a C+ or B.

Anyone notice this is what evergaol vyke uses instead of the frenzied version?

Sucks that this doesn't even work on the Banished Knight Sword. It's literally their move! Some of the arbitrary restrictions in this game are maddening.

Hopefully the dlc has a regal spear/halberd (with a unique movesets plz god) that allows ashes cuz I wanna be a Dragoon so bad mang

It might not have the range you expect, but it has very very high damage, decent hyper armor, and allows you to pancake with a spear. That alone is super satisfying.
What's even better is how well it's hurtboxes are. Upon startup, your character will crouch down for a bit, and when timed correctly you can use this to duck under many attacks like stabs and horizontal slashes, especially against enemies that are slightly larger humanoids, like Leonine Misbegotten and Crucible Knights (and both of those appear together as a boss fight, so there's a great place to try).
It sounds like it'd be hard to pull off, but it honestly is not as difficult as it sounds. And nothing can beat how badass you feel when you successfully dodge and counterattack in this way.

Man, I want all the storm ashes of war to be good in pvp, but most of them have one or two fatal flaws to them which ruins the point of using them since there are always better alternatives. Storm Assault? Bad range (slow recovery too). Storm blade? Low damage, too telegraphed, beast roar is better. Stormcaller? Very low damage, can instead use spinning strikes. Storm stomp is the only good one. Such a damn shame, they all look so cool.

I want to use this to kill a dragon, by doing a jump attack with this WA's downward thrust. I know it will never happen tho, but I can dream

I was hoping this would be akin to the sudden charge the polearm wielding banished knights perform. Sadly, this travels all of three feet from the point of casting

It is so satisfying landing it, you have hyper armor and can dodge thanks to the jump, love it

I've honestly had pretty good luck with this on a short spear. In PvP the initial wind gust on the wind up seems to catch folks off guard and it usually staggers them long enough for the attack to land.
Very stylish and does pretty good damage but the wind up for the attack is very slow. Make sure to really know your timing using this ash of war.

This should really be usable on reapers
