Effect Grants affinities and skills to an armament

Ash of War: Rain of Arrows is an Ash of War and Upgrade Material in Elden Ring. Ash of War: Rain of Arrows provides Standard affinity and the Rain of Arrows Skill. Ashes of War can be equipped on Weapons and Shields to modify the Skill or an equipment, or to apply affinities that modify scaling values.

This Ash of War grants no affinity to an armament, but imparts the following skill:

"Rain of Arrows: Archery skill performed from a low stance. Ready the bow, then fire a burst of arrows into the sky to shower the enemy with projectiles."

Usable on all bows.

Ash of War: Rain of Arrows Location in Elden Ring

Where to find Ash of War: Rain of Arrows:

  • Caelid: Appears at edge of a cliff after you've looted the "Redmane" Painting in Sellia, Town of Sorcery. You'll find it down the cliff on a plateau south east of the Eastern Minor Erdtree in Caelid. This is right below Fort Faroth. The Erdtree is located in the Caelid subregion called Dragonbarrow. Once you've made your way down, walk to the edge (without the pillars) and you'll briefly see the spirit of a painter, he'll vanish and the Ash of War will appear in his place. [Elden Ring Map Link]
  • If you use the spiritspring here and jump <just past> the spiritspring (on the very edge of its radius), then double jump just before you hit the little jar on the edge of the cliff, you can safely land at the bottom or close to it.

  • From the Fort Faroth Grace. Head NE and jump down onto the spiritspring at the base of the Erdtree. If you walk SE to the cliff to the right of the pot and broken pot next to each other, there are a series of roots you can jump down to reach this ledge.
  • There is no need to aggro the strong golem at the West to get this drop, although it can be safely engaged from the top of the last tree before dropping onto the platform. It only drops about 5000 runes and is guarding a corpse with a Rune Arc.

Ok I take back what I said. Arrow’s reach talisman makes this pretty great, and the only one arrow cost, to get a bunch of hits, even in a dungeon, is excellent.

Wow, that was a lot of work for an ash that only works on things right next to you, and only after a lot of slow animation. Almost unusable!

The painter is straight up not there??? I'm so confused I'm standing right where the gif says, I see te golem, but no item.

radahn's bow is effectively a direct upgrade compared to a greatbow with rain of arrows, it's lighter, does more damage, and it has a better aow.

This ashe of war is broken. It should not penetrate the environment considering it falls from the sky. A lot of invaders just abuse this ash of war.

What's with this raid boss Golem with a completely unique skill? I'm level 150 and he still slapped me around.

Came to this at endgame after killing Malenia (@%$^$) and Maliketh and the golem down here was STILL ridiculously overtuned. Wth?

It's so annoying switching bows all the time for different Ashes of war as there is so few and they are all essential for a bow main build.

A bow should be able to take two Ashes, one for r1 one for r2, excluding somber bows. That way you could actually have a bit of versatility without hardswapping constantly or having 6 bows equipped.

Can confirm that as of the current version (12/13/2022), the jump is still very doable. People saying it's not must be forgetting to double jump as they're falling toward the pot. You MUST double jump or you will come up short.

To those who think this is OP. You either need to put more points into vigor or need to get better weapons to use on bosses.

Apparently, as long as you're locked onto another player, this can go through anything. Killed me in two hits with it, over 700 damage per hit. The player casting it was completely out of view and the ceiling was directly above me, so the shots hit me immediately. Ridiculously broken.

This plus bleed arrows to shred Ekzykes on the hill to the left after exiting the dragon cathedral. Took about 7 shots on a +12 long bow (not sure how the AoW scales). I was at 46 STR and 21 DEX with the Arrow's Reach talisman.

Hey screw your spirit spring jump clip I've tried so many times and can't even get close to the end without a double jump

                                  • I'm curious how this interacts with Draw String Grease.

I've been finding bows a bit situational at best, but IF the grease actually adds flat damage across multi-arrow ashes of war, that could be very worthwhile.

I asked about this AoW damage vs range but I forgot the relevant part that made me think about all this in the first place, my shortbow is upgraded further than my horn bow with higher base damage but less range while the horn bow does added magic damage, the colour of the thumbnail for rain of arrows is purple the same as the gravity magic AoW so does any of that last part make RoA preferable on a horn with lower base phys damage but magic damage to a shortbow with higher phys damage than the horn bow?

                                      • Anonymous

I have a question about this AoW but before I ask, I highly recommend anyone ready to get this from the artist to watch one of the videos on YT for how to do the spirit spring instead of the speeded up clip on here, that's the surest way do it without dying.

So how does this AoW work with upgraded bows? obviously each arrow in the cluster does damage that's apparent depending on how many of them hit the target and in what we see when all the arrows hit a target in an enclosed space, but this on a shortbow upgraded further and doing more damage, is better than on the horn bow doing less damage but with better range, is that correct? I use arrow's reach and sting with this AoW but I'm curious if the longer range on the long bow makes it preferable than more damage but less range from a shortbow. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Spirit Spring to avoid annoying platforming fall deaths. Genius. Need a Spirit Spring at Bestial Sanctum and Cathedral of the Forsaken now.

If you find it tricky to execute this spiritspring move, you can just parkour your way down (much simpler to do IMO)

If you use this skill on an ennemy that is on a ceiling or is close to it, ALL arrows will hit. In that regard, you can bait a target under some ruins, a tunnel or any low ceiling to completely shred it’s HP. Strongest gimmick ash of war imho

I've been sceptical about this since I first got it, especially about the short range it has, but in all fairness I've seen its value on preceptor miriam, an incredibly annoying enemy who does a lot of damage and likes to teleport around. This AoW made killing her a lot less painful than it can be. As an invader type enemy she is vulnerable to poison, bleed and rot, hitting her with clusters of bleed arrows worked a treat for me.

                                                • Anonymous

I was expecting something similar to what the radahn knight outside fort gael uses against the player, he can hit you from a good distance, but this AoW has a very short range to it, refusing to hit enemies I target lock unless they are standing right next to me. arrows reach does improve it slightly but not enough to make it worth my while. I can see it doing damage to large enemies, but needing to be so close for it to work, I can't really see a boss letting you get that close and allow you to use this without hitting you hard first.

                                                  • Anonymous

If you kill the golem with the unique weapon/ash of war, does he come back? If so, has anyone tried farming him for that enchanted golem's halberd? I've never seen that Ash of War used by any other enemy/NPC. I'm sure it has a really low drop rate if so, but that AoW lazer beam kicked my arse in Journey 7 o.O

Rain of Arrows is very good and worth the trouble, if you use it correctly -- which is to say, against large enemies. Smaller enemies, with small hitboxes, will catch fewer arrows and therefore take very little damage, but big enemies with big hitboxes will catch more of them, and therefore get absolutely shredded.

                                                      • Anonymous

I lost 500k Souls trying to get this ash of war. Defeated the golem after many attempts only to find I didnt even have to kill him to get this ash of war...then I try it out and it's not even that good imo. I'll have to test it with different arrows.

A few comments about the 'rain of arrows' range, one saying it varies and I think mention of the Radhan knight high up on the cliff outside gael fortress in caelid firing it off as soon as it sees you no matter how far from him you are. Does anyone know if the range of the version of this AoW available to the player has been nerfed? or has it always had a fairly short range considering how far enemies that use it can hit you with it? On the one hand I can see how everyone would be moaning about it being 'broken' and OP in pvp if it was the same as what Loretta or the Radhan knight use, on the other it seems pretty worthless for pve the way it is now. The barrage AoW does use more ammo, but it can inflict status effects very quickly and at long range depending on the bow. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has found rain of arrows to be genuinely useful and in what siruations.

Anyone saying they are dying to some sort of "kill wall" when they try to use the spirit spring to get down to the artist, they are doing something wrong. I have no doubt about that. I only got rain of arrows a few days ago, I died over and over trying to platform my way down. I came here hoping to find some way to make the platforming easier. I saw a few comments mentioning using the spirit spring to get down safely. I had a look on youtube to see which spirit spring and how exactly it was done, and it worked the first time I tried it. It is not in any way hard, tricky or complicated. I pressed jump when torrent's back legs were on the very edge of the spirit spring, right at the last minute, jumping towards where the first root you would have to drop down on to start the platforming puzzle is. Just like in the video clip, I did the double jump to carry me past the edge, and once clear you can sort of control which direction torrent is facing while in mid air on the drop down, it allows you some control over your descent and means you wont accidentally land on a root or pillar putting you back to square one. You absolutely will land safely and be able to get the AoW from the artist.

Also about the golem, by jumping from the spirit spring in the direction I saw in the video clip, towards the first root you would need to drop down on to start the platforming puzzle, I was far enough away and it didn't wake up when I landed. I was able to crouch and use stealth to get close enough for the artist to spawn and pick up the AoW without having to deal with the golem first. Having said that, there is something to loot right in the golem's armpit that I haven't seen anyone else mention. I'm not 100% sure now, but I think it was a rune arc. I do know it was something worth looting, not a worthless turd like a furled finger remedy or a mushroom. It cannot be gotten using stealth, I tried. When I looted it the golem started to get up, it wasn't a problem for me though, I had died so many times trying the platforming puzzle I didn't have a single rune, so I just ran and jumped off the edge to my death and happily re-spawned at grace checkpoint.

I only started using this a couple of days ago. I've been sorely disappointed with it, especially considering how many times I died trying to get down the roots and pillars, if I hadn't seen a comment from someone mentioning using the spirit spring to get down safely I'd either have given up on it, or I'd still be there now trying to get it. After all that I had hoped it would be worth all the trouble, something like Loretta uses if you get within range on the approach to caria manor. If not as powerful as Loretta at least the same as the Radhan knight uses from the cliff outside fort gael in caelid. From the depiction on the AoW of arrows with a purple aura that's what I thought I was getting. I'm not sure if I'm missing something but I've tried this out on a few different enemies, right away I could see the AoW didn't have much range on it, I was getting a target lock on an enemy but when I used L2 to trigger the skill, none of the arrows were getting anywhere near to where the enemy I'd targeted was, they were just landing all around me instead, the rain of arrows was only coming down on a target locked enemy if they were really close, otherwise they come down around me. I did wonder if they are supposed to work like that, maybe meant to be used as some sort of crowd control on enemies getting too close, but it doesn't make much sense for that to be the case. If enemies are rushing toward you and get close enough for rain of arrows to actually hit them, its debatable if you would even get one shot off without an enemy staggering you and knocking you out of the animation. I just don't see what situations this AoW could be of any use.

                                                                  • Anonymous

If so its time to equip all the light giving or glowing gear I can and invade as a Ravewraith!

                                                                    • Anonymous

Also, if you have no FP, I would strongly recommend against using this, as it then only shoots one arrow, randomly inside the normal area of the skill, and still takes the longer animation to shoot, making a normal shot much easier to pull off and get away safely.

                                                                        • Anonymous

Damage is based off of bow damage and arrow damage like regular shots.

Range changes based on many factors.

Firstly, Range stat of Bow. Short bows have the least base range, Longbows have standard, while grestbows have slightly more.

Fletched Arrows reach further than non Fletched, while the non crafted arrows go even further.

The Archery talisman that increases travel distance also increases the striking range of this ability.

It's definitely one of the hardest platforming spots in the game. I recommend using your runes if it's your first time going down there. That golem is no joke either. He did things to me I've never seen any golem in the game do :(

I use a Shortbow as a secondary weapon and then just use whatever Arrows I need for a specific boss, since it is VERY easy to proc status effects with this and it is way more efficient than using Barrage. Rain of Arrows only uses 1 Arrow and can hit a bunch of times and so on most bosses you will be able to proc whatever status you want with only a couple arrows. You could even use Kindred of Rot's Exultation + Mushroom Crown and use Poison Arrows for a whopping 30% Damage Increase for everything, including Spells.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

Each shot takes the dmg buff, if you can get a full burst off and hit every arrow that's a big ol chonk of a dmg buff, particularly useful against SUPER annoying enemies like stationary Albunaurics in Ordina, or the doofy snowmen in the first section of the Haligtree

Either they're messing up or its back to working again. To do it I was jumping at the very edge of the spring closest to the ledge, dont double jump until you are on top of jar or very close to touching the ground. Also i saw the ghost while fighting the golem(harder than any boss imo) and ran to the ghost and the golem smacked it and it dissipated leaving the spirit ash. Hope that helps.

Fires a volley of 12 arrows, originating from right above the target (roughly 2,5 seconds after pressing the trigger button - spread is around 2,5m in radius, so it is best used again larger targets). The target area is determined the moment the arrow leaves the bowstring.

If no target is locked or the target is out of range, the arrows will instead fall down right above the player. The range is roughly 2/3 of the normal lock on range, but can be extended to further than that with the Arrow's Reach Talisman.

Descending those roots is annoying as hell, fall damage is so inconsistent feels as if someone at From flips a coin everytime you drop off a ledge to determine if you take no damage or instadeath. And when you do get to the bottom laser golem forces you to hide behind pillars while he gets free swings at you and if you mess up you get to do the same bs all over again. 10/10 game experience.

Then they turn and look at you...

I picked it up because it seems like an awesome skill for inflicting status ailments, but the range seems really short. I was locked onto an enemy and when I shot, it rained them down directly on me. I noticed I had to be pretty close for it to rain down on my target. Is this a fluke or do you really need to be really close to an enemy for it to work?
