Cursemark carved into Lunar Princess Ranni's discarded flesh

Cursemark of Death is a Key Item in Elden Ring. Key Items in Elden Ring include a wide variety of items found in specific locations or are given by a related NPC which are used to unlock areas, quests, and to further progress the game's story.

Cursemark carved into the discarded flesh of Ranni the Witch. Also known as the half-wheel wound of the centipede.

This cursemark was carved at the moment of Death of the first demigod, and should have taken the shape of a circle.

However, two demigods perished at the same time, breaking the cursemark into two half-wheels.

Ranni was the first of the demigods whose flesh perished, while the Prince of Death perished in soul alone.

People trying to pull meaning out of details the devs probably barely thought about. Pretend all you want that there's more to it but none of you have any proof that there's anything more than. "When Godwyn perished so did Ranni."

So I did a run through where I only killed Radahn as my first boss, with my plan to be to to get Ranni's Cursemark of Death and then proceed through Rodgiers quest and go kill Godrick. So before I went to the Carian building to flip it and get the cursemark, and have made sure no Rodgier in the Roundtable Hold. Then I got the cursemark and went to Roundtable hold just to make sure FromSoft doesn't just skip ahead a bunch of content and....nope. Rodgier is sitting there, in his moaning sleep phase, can't interact. KInda stupid flaw in the writing, I wanted to be prepared so that when Rodgier asked me to go get the Cursemark I could be like *BAM*, already have it for you. But I guess no matter what, Rodgier is fated to never see that mark, even if you logically do the content in such a way as to make it so that he would see it. I just want him to be happy and see his efforts rewarded.

So many confidently wrong lore comments here, I'm begging you guys to please actually listen to dialogue and read item descriptions bc so many of your 'theories' can be instantly dismissed.

Ranni's corpse: knife to the back.
Ranni the Witch: It was suicide.

Well okay then. Guess I'll take your word for it...

wtf i wrong with this page, it doesn't tell us anything for fear of spoilers.
I just wanted to know if this was safe to give to Fia

              • Anonymous

So, according to the item description and Fia's dialogues, the cursemark was supposed to be carved onto the first dead as a full circle, Godwyn. But Ranni killed herself at the same time, so the mark split between them. Why, then, would Rogier assume that Ranni, the forger, should have the mark on her, instead of Godwyn, the first dead? Seems like he's wrong about it.

                • Anonymous

Rogier, for some reason, believe that the one who orchestrated the Black Knives should have the cursemark on them, but why? If the cursemark is supposed to be carved onto the one who forged the Black Knives, wouldn't that mean Godwyn also forged some himself? And they both kill themselves at the same time, so they ended up sharing the cursemark. Either that, or Rogier was just misunderstanding something.

If you look closely at the location of the marks, both on Ranni's body and on Godwyn's, you will see that they both have the same marks. That is, both start on his left shoulder and go down his back, but if the original mark was a circle that was divided to mark each demi-god, these marks should be opposite (one mark should start on the right shoulder).
This only leads me to believe that this division and that both demi-gods received the same mark, but only part of them died. It serves the interest of someone deeper, someone who needs death to be released.
In addition, Ranni already mastered the magic of moving her soul to other containers and her only purpose was to get rid of her flesh, which was what tied her to the Two Fingers, upon receiving her body the mark, her soul should have always been safe.
For me the division of the brand was an accident in Ranni's plans.

There's something that I've been thinking about lately. Is the Cursemark of Death considered Ranni's Great Rune? It's possible since it becomes a mending rune but there could be a separate rune for Ranni as well. The Shattering occurred after the Night of Black Knives, when Godwyn and Ranni received their Cursemarks. It is possible that the Cursemark and Great Rune could be separate entities, and that we might be able to receive Ranni's actual Great Rune in DLC. Side note, another thing that could add to this could be the theory that the symbol on the moon that resembles the two arcs on the Elden Ring being Ranni's Great Rune. But who knows?

is it possible that Ranni conspired to kill Godwyn so she doesn’t die in spirit too ? splitting the cursemark so she only dies physically

                        • It seems picking this up forces Rogier to go into his coma, eventually dying when you return to the Roundtable Hold. I expected as much, but wanted to test it out for myself. I held off on his dialogue after meeting with Ranni so that he wouldn't go into this state and would check in on him every time I made some progress and had to return to the sanctuary. His head was always in a normal position. Then I noticed him slunched over like my first playthrough. It's a shame you go through all this effort to help him and it's all for nothing. It seems like he mostly exists to lead you into Ranni's questline for her ending and, potentially, to dabble into Fia's ending as well (since you have to speak to Fia and will likely see the dialogue for the dagger, as well as getting an item she needs for her questline in the process). Especially so because his goal and fixation on the cursemark is to ease the suffering of those who live in death, which I suppose would be Fia's ending. I wonder if he knows that it would cost D's life to get to that point. He certainly thinks D would kill him, at least, if he knew Rogier's goal.

So I didn’t need this to spawn the lichdragon when I ran through my first play through. In fact, I didn’t do anything for rogiers play through and was still able to meet fia and spawn the lich.

                            • About Ranni and Godwyn:
I heard some people think Ranni tricked the Rune of Death but that wasn't the case imo:
Yes, both Ranni and Godwyn died by the Rune of Death that day.
I know Godwyn died in Soul only and Ranni (or Renna) died in Body alone. However, I don't believe it was her "splitting" the "target" of the Rune of Death and tricking it...
I don't think Ranni really, fully expected dying like that, but when it was starting she quickly abandoned her body - by shedding her old skin like a snake. iirc some item descriptions explain exactly that!
My point is, I always saw the Double-Death that happened there as a Brutal Backfire, Double Edge Curse of the Destined Death : She used it on Godwyn, but the Rune of Death was too powerful and also "infected" or "bitten" her in the process - which caused her bodily death:
"2 demigods died that night, while Ranni was the first to die in body, Godwyn died in Soul alone" or something like that...
The Rune of Death was more than she could handle, but she managed to avoid its full effect, probably in the last moment, cheating death.
Another way of looking at it possibly is: Godwyn was strong enough to avoid dying in body, so the Rune if Death targeted her weaker more vulnerable body instead - after already claiming his Soul. That's when Death was satisfied.
                              This wasn't fully planned, imo.
But Ranni made a last ditch sacrifice to escape Death, denying and defying her fate, until she could rise again.

Ranni was the first of the demigods whose flesh perished, while the Prince of Death perished in soul alone.

I feel like this line means that the Prince of Death's body is still alive somewhere

does giving fia this in order to continue her questline ruin my ending with ranni?
i have already completed it a while ago but do i need this item in my inventory in order to like activate ranni's ending?

I already finished Rannis quest, then just found this randomly during some backtracking. Who do I give this to, and will it mess up the progress I made towards the ranni route?

Does giving this to Fia after getting the Darkmoon Greatsword lock you out of getting Ranni's ending? I want to do Ranni's ending, but get to fight the special boss tied to the Fia questline in one run if possible
