the ring is supposed to be given by Lunar Princess Ranni to her consort.
Ranni is an Empyrean, meaning her consort would by rights earn the title of lord.
A warning is engraved within;
"Whoever thou mayest be,

the solitude beyond the night is better mine alone."

Elden Ring Dark Moon Ring Use
Dark Moon Ring allows passage through an otherwise sealed pathway behind Astel Naturalborn of the Void, leading towards the Cathedral of Manus Celes. Can be used on Ranni's body in the Cathedral of Manus Celes to finish her questline.

So, Ranni initially wanted to leave everything behind, and go alone. But after everything you've done, she changed her mind. Either she is fond of your service, or she somewhat fell in love, if that is even possible for her. I mean she calls you her dearest consort. So it seems fitting, the maidenless tarnished finds his maiden in the moon. Damn I feel like Sokka from Avatar.

Legit only found this ring after I finished Sellen questline. DId not notice that there was another (?) chest near Renalla. Or was it never two chests in the first place?

The ring warned me not to take it and that she wants to go alone so I left it!

If you use the flying horse glitch from the Raya Lucaria Academy to reach the Moonlight alter, you can still "give ring" to ranni without actually having the ring.
This can be done even before meeting ranni. Her dialog is the same though.
This allows you to get the darkmoon greatsword early without trading.

I made it all the way to the underground area at the Cathedral of Manus Celes, but I realized that I don't have the ring in my inventory, so Ranni isn't appearing in front of the 2 fingers. Any idea what happened to it?

The Ring has a warning that directly states Ranni will be leaving the world for the solitude of night. And you can still choose to give her the Ring to signify that you're okay with that because you want to come with her. I was not expecting something that romantic from Miyazaki lol.

I didn’t speak to the doll before killing both bosses. I’m now at the sealed door how do I acquire the ring? Talked to the doll I only get the same dialogue over and over again.
