We know the man-serpents were spawned when Rykard fed himself to the serpent, but how exactly this wound up in a mother's womb I don't know. Was Tanith the surrogate for a woman-serpent's embryo, and the transplant was the hideous ritual? Or do you think Rykard put a baby in Tanith back when he was normal, fed himself to the serpent, and somehow corrupted his own unborn daughter retroactively, turning her normal embryo part-serpent?

The latter makes sense to me -- like, what if that's how the "birth of the man-serpents" came about? Rykard feeds himself to the big snake and that somehow mucks up all pregnancies in the Manor and prison town, Tanith's included, and over the course of a generation the man-serpents grow up, kill the remaining humans in the town and take over.

The Godskin Noble in the temple makes me wonder, though. What if the Noble was playing surgeon, and tried to remove the amnion from Tanith's body and kill preemie Rya (by all rights a demigod if she's Rykard's biological daughter), but failed somehow?
