Greyoll's Roar is an Incantation in Elden Ring. Greyoll's Roar spell conjures a thundering shriek of Greyoll that debuffs enemies, temporarily decreasing their defenses and attack power. Updated to Patch 1.10.

Superior incantation of Dragon Communion.
Channels the power of Greyoll, the Elder Dragon.
An incantation of legendary status.

Transforms caster into a dragon to emit a terrible roar,
reducing
the attack power and defense of nearby enemies.

Greyoll was the mother of all dragons,
dwarfing all who stood
before her like a looming mountain.

Elden Ring Greyoll's Roar Guide

  • Dragon Communion Incantation
  • Stamina Cost: 72
  • Deals standard physical damage.
  • 17 stance damage.
  • Applies hard knockback if the opponent's stance is broken.
  • The full cast takes on average 4 seconds, with the roar being registered around the 2.0-second mark.
  • Emits a 360° AoE roar that deals significant damage and also applies a debuff.
  • This is a Power Shred Debuff and will not stack with other debuffs of the same type.
    • The debuff decreases the enemy's attack by 15% and defense by 10% for 60 seconds.
    • The debuff visual effect of this spell will mark invisible enemies, similar to Shriek of Milos weapon skill.
    • See Buffs and Debuffs for more information on stacking debuffs.
  • Note: FP cost significantly reduced as of Patch 1.07, from 62 to 50.
  •  As of Patch 1.09, Roar Medallion increases the damage of this incantation by approx 10% in Player vs. Environment and 4% in Player vs. Player.
  • As of Patch 1.09, Greyoll's Roar decreases the enemy's attack by 15% instead of the previous 20%.

Elden Ring Greyoll's Roar Note and Tips

  • Updated to Patch 1.10. See Patch Notes for details.
  • If your opponent gets hard-knocked in front of you, use Greyoll's Roar. The range of the attack and active frames are long enough to make it almost impossible for the opponent to get out of range of the attack when they recover.
  • Use Greyoll's Roar as a follow-up attack with Stone of Gurranq, when your opponent is point-blank. If you hit your enemy point-blank with Stone of Gurranq, it will true-combo into itself. Afterward, immediately follow up with Greyoll's Roar as the hit stun from Stone of Gurranq makes it almost impossible to dodge.
  • The high cost, slow speed, and short duration make this spell best on builds specializing in stacking buffs before quickly bursting the boss down.
  • It's also useful for stealthy ambushes against foes (PvE and PvP), especially since it hits them through walls, and can knock most enemies off ledges for an instant kill.
  • Due to latency, the AoE roar will sometimes do no damage to the enemy, regardless if the opponent dodges.
  • The Power Shred Debuff can sometimes phantom hit an opponent if they dodge away from the AoE roar.

If they add her incantation already in the base game does this mean there will be no dlc questline for her? Sadge

If someone is chasing you down with fists, doing the hyper aggressive playstyle with bloodflame blade, you know. Create some distance, they assume you're panicking and give chase, and once you learn how to time it right, you'll catch these guys with greyoll's roar every time. Radagon icon helps. Turn their aggression against them.

        • Anonymous

The best thing about this spell is that if it's timed right, you can get hit out of it but the spell's hitbox still activates meaning you scream for a split second before being hit out of it but the enemy still gets knocked back.

Ngl the fact that Eleonora has Greyoll's Roar pisses me off more than it should. How tf does she have it? She didn't kill Greyoll and the fact that some npc has a legendary spell doesn't make it feel like an actual legendary spell. Same with Agheel's flame. She should've had dragonclaw, dragonmaw, and like dragonfire or something.

Love this incant in PvE, though in the colosseums and invasions it's viability can feel hit and miss. On one hand it hits like a truck and the debuff effect is awesome, on the other it's pretty easy to punish during the wind-up or if your opponent rolls through it/is just out of range.

As someone who dumped 81 Arcane for farming purposes and to make PvE a bit more difficult (by using stuff that doesn't benefit from arcane) since I am overleveled for the ng I am in, having this skill as an optional opener for bossfights or to quickly dispose of zerg enemies is really nice. But the application to PvP seems almost unfair in that context. Using it to even the playing field with people and their usual tactics/optimized builds was the initial intention, but honestly this hits WAY harder than you'd expect even with just one Dragon communion seal on +10. Like most of the times if it is buffed with Golden Vow beforehand this makes 50-70% of damage to people's health pool especially if you catch someone jumping towards you with it AND it reduces both their offensive and defensive capabilities for a time.

Considering how getting invaded is the most profitable way for me to make runes right now this has been always slotted in alongside some other incantations and if you delve deep into arcane I would recommend using it for the debuff alongside your other skills and to surprise would be invaders. It's also a great tool to learn stuff by surviving more and more mistakes. Give this a real go, you won't regret it.

A good way to view this, is as a physical Wrath of gold. Well it cost 2 slots to use it, it's damage is good, it de-buffs, knocks enemies back, and gets a damage boost from the dragon communion seal. Pretty good in my opinion

I like to use this as crowd control against smaller enemies. I'll be interested to see if the roar medallion is worth the talisman slot between this and agheel's flame, when I mostly use dragonmaw/claw.

                      • Anonymous

OK, is everyone talking pvp? because PvE this has been absolutely shite. I regret wasting the hearts in it, I've got 35 faith and +12 God seal and it does like 2-300 dmg, sure the debuff is nice, but 3 hearts, 2 slots and a whole blue bar nice? not by a ****ing mile. turned my dragon communion build into a straight faith build real fking quick

Highly useful and rewarding in PVP and PVP with some nuance. Spamming it will just leave you wide open for anyone with projectiles available, however. Choose your moments wisely.

Does this count as a roar attack as well as a dragon communion spell? Wondering if it can be buffed with things like the roar medallion as well as the dragon communion seal.

                            • Pretty mediocre in PvP from my experience. Does good damage if it hits but it takes so long to recover from they're already healed back up by the time it's over. Also if they roll through it you're definitely getting backstabbed.

To answer the question of the comment after the one below me, because for whatever reason I’ve noticed you can’t reply to comments anymore. That entirely depends on what your sacred seal scales off of. Spells themselves don’t scale off of any specific attribute, they just have attribute requirements.

Considering this has the highest faith requirement of any dragon incantation, 13 faith is really all you need for an arcane build. Two fingers talisman+faith knot tear puts you at 28 exactly.

Is there any point even bothering to try using this on Malenia? I need something to take the edge off her, is she immune to the debuff from this or acid spraymist?

"defense shred debuff" which lowers enemy's defense by 10% while lowers your own defense for 20% (by raising enemy's attack). yea right, seems legit.

Hitbox from behind seems buggy as of late, I used to be able to hit things from every angle at a certain distance but nowadays it doesn't seem to do it anymore.

Equip a dagger or something with endure before you cast this and youll be able to take a hit without being interrupted easily, my main weapon is the magma wyrms scaleblade because im a full dragon build and i got raptor claws as my other main hand with endure on it, it really helps when casting this when being grouped on

I really, REALLY want to like this incant, but the thing is, right: you can hit people with this and they can STILL PUNISH YOU. I'm not even kidding, I've hit other players point blank, they get up and punish me with a full weapon art. Sucks to outplay your opponent with this slow-starting move only to get hit for more than you dealt

                                              • Anonymous

This is unbelievably good at dealing with those annoying AFKers who send out a duelist call and then deliberately run & hide their character in locations you generally can't reach/get to. Either because there's only room for one and you'll fall to your death bouncing off them, or there's so little room they can hit you with Regression/Wrath of Gold and still knock you off their hiding spot to your death before you ever get a chance to attack. The AOE of the roar seems to bypass most walls (much like the massive zero damage invisible AOE explosion Mohg's & Morgitt's Shackles do) within a short distance from you and can easily knock many of these players off the ledges they're hiding on. Especially at First Step or at Liurnia. The only other one that comes close in my experience is the Cannon sorcery. Also works rather well if you think there's an enemy hiding around a corner or above you (those damn Imps in the dungeons/catacombs for example) as you get in a free hit, they get debuffed, and its just enough of a stagger for you to run back to get more room to cast or get into a position to melee attack while they're staggered. Just remember, its AOE. So if anything else is hiding, you likely just ticked off the entire group. There's at least one dungeon where I managed to wake up four imps all at the same time in the same room and got stunlock juggled to death.

This is easily one of my favorite incants. It casts almost as fast as Earthshaker Ashes and variants, does at least as much damage, and adds a debuff. All that's necessary is to make yourself some breathing room. I've run this consistently in many big boss fights since NG and it can seriously help, especially with armor tank bosses like Radahan or HP tanks like Elden Beast. For extra shenanigans, stack it with Frostbite and swing for the fences.

                                                  • Anonymous

Really good in PvP, i'm a weak dragon lady so anyone will 1-2 shot me and they know that, so I spam breath from afar to get them into the mindset that i am a brainless idiot dragon and then fake them out with the roar, works everytime (except for if they have BHS) and you can usually follow up with a breath or Dragonclaw, Crucible: Tail, or Honed Bolt to finish them off, its really fun and I usually hate PvP in these games

                                                    • Anonymous

On xbox I defeated the dragon, went to the cathedral and it never showed up for purchase. Anyone else have this problem

Does the debuff apply when you do damage to the enemy or is the debuff range bigger then the damage range?

                                                        • Anonymous

Never knew this dealt damage, I thought it was only a wide AoE debuff. It was surprising to be killed by a dragon shout when I'm not even playing Skyrim lol

Why can't I find his spell in the dragon communion church even though I killed greyoll? I have completed the game twice and I have enough hearts

                                                            • If anyone is having the trouble of not having it unlocked after already killing greyoll, remember that there is another dragon comunion selling point in west/ east Caelid. Probably a dumb answer, but it’s not very clear from this entry.

imagine rushing in for a finish only to be hit by a greyolls roar and getting pounded into the ****ing ground by dragon lightning

                                                                • Anonymous

I've been PvPing for a bit and I've fallen for this spell twice now, and I've gotta say: It's pretty damn good. The whole point of this spell in PvP is to make people think you're using another Dragon Incantation, so they run to punish you but then get insta-killed by the near instant AoE which does like 1000 damage.

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

Since I haven’t seen this mentioned anywhere, this does pure physical damage. Consequence of this is that it can be boosted by the Blue Dancer’s Charm, and can be blocked by high guard boost shields in PVP.

                                                                      • Anonymous

In pvp everyone thinks you are casting a breath attacks and rushes into the aoe and dies. its so funny and it deals around 800-1000 dmg in pvp with 50 arcane, 30 faith and 10+ dragon seal. Decent in pve if you have faster cast time, the debuff helps alot too.

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          ER lacks buff incant IMO.

                                                                          • Anonymous

I assume the mother of all dragons thing is only about nu dragons. In another description it differentiates the ancient dragons(red lightning ones) from "mortal dragons". Ancient dragons also don't drop hearts and their spells aren't effected by normal dragon spell buffs. I think these dragons came later.

                                                                            • Anonymous

Turns out this is an excellent PvP spell for a dragon communion caster. You can use it as a devastating mix-up, because the start up looks verrrrrrry similar to the other kinds of dragon breath. Pop this danger close, posing as a panic dragon breath, and watch the enemy run right into the blast.

                                                                              • Anonymous

Any thoughts? Last missing one for the achievement :(

                                                                                  • Anonymous

Does the debuff only take affect when enemies are hit by the roar or is there a range you could be in to debuff enemies

                                                                                      • Anonymous

Has anyone tried this incantation against dragon bosses/enemies? I wonder if theres any special interactions.

                                                                                        • This is one of the best dragon incantations in the game imo, up there with Rotten Breath and Dragonice (I prefer these over the more expensive counterparts due to better control and similar damage).

The debuff is useful but not really the selling point for me, it's fairly minimal imo unless you stack debuffs. The real selling point is the damage and deceptive range. I first experienced it against Eleonora spamming this when I got too close, and it was an instant death. It has more width than length, meaning dodging to the caster's side will get you killed, but hardly anyone knows that. Damage is about 1500 on my arcane 45 faith 32 build with +10 DC seal. Wrath of Gold is the closest spell to this with its own pro and con. e

                                                                                          • This incantation isn't bad at all, one of the more useful ones. The damage is below something similar like the Wrath of Gold and its FP cost is high, but it has a ton of width and more range than even a fully charged Wrath of Gold.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

This is a nice spell with a safe cast (it staggers most things and keeps them away from you) and a very useful debuff.

While the faith investment may seem high, by 28 Faith you get Fire's Deadly Sin, Immutable Shield, Lord's Heal, Dragonbolt Blessing, Vyke's Dragonbolt, Barrier of Gold (and other high-tier defense spells) and Golden Vow, among others which with a high-level dragon seal will do respectable damage when needed (such as frenzy spells, some pyromancies, and access to all of the Aspects of the Crucible abilities).

The assumption is that you're looking at Arcane if you're building for this, so that's a lot of utility you get out of Arcane while still having plenty of levels leftover for whatever else you need.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

Tested this on one of those red zombies near rotview balcony. Did 1093 with my setup. With highland axe or roar medallion its 1322. Its buffed by either, but they dont stack.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

TBH I can see why so many people don't find this spell valuable. It really is a very playstyle specific spell. Outside reducing the dmg a boss does when summoned, it likely isn't worth the spell slots and damage you could do with something else. But I run a 2-handed, beserker style Holy/strength build focused on buffing my charcters physical and heavy attack damage. I dodge dodge dodge and then slam the boss with as many heavy attacks as possible. I use my first fp bar to buff before a boss, second fp bar to debuff boss, and 3rd is held as needed pending how fight goes. It's a melee glass cannon spec so the dmg reduction from boss is just gravy (as a lot of bosses can 1-2 shot me so that reduction has allowed me to live with a sliver of life more then once)

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                                    • I love how the skill looks like so I tried really hard to incorporate it into my arsenal but the cost is just too high - stat requirements, insane FP and stamina cost, reserves 2 memory slots, animation lock. There are just too many drawbacks for it to be useful for my hybrid fighter characters. It's probably decent choice for pure casters to punish and push away foes that get too close. I'm just a little bit disappointed it's nothing more than that.

If you want a dragon spell to debuff enemies you can also use ice dragon breath instead. It has better reach and is way more efficient.
