Sets area and self ablaze with raging flames
![]() |
Fire's Deadly Sin is an Incantation in Elden Ring. Fire's Deadly Sin spell covers both the player and the area with flames
Incantation originating from a deeply ominous prophecy.
Sets both the caster and the surrounding area ablaze with raging flames. The caster's body will remain engulfed in flame for a while, burning them and any who draw near. Charging enhances potency.
The prophet despaired, looking up at the Erdtree, for soon the kindling would burst into flame, bringing ruin.
"The burning of the Erdtree is the first cardinal sin. That is not the domain of mere men."
Where to find Fire's Deadly Sin
Where to find Fire's Deadly Sin:
- Acquire the Flightless Bird Painting from Fortified Manor, Leyndell, Royal Capital.
- Then go southeast of Windmill Heights, directly East of where is says Dominula, Windmill Village on the map. You'll see a ghost in a chair who will drop it after disappearing. [Elden Ring Interactive Map link]
Elden Ring Fire's Deadly Sin Guide
Reward from completing the "Flightless Bird" painting puzzle.
- Stamina Cost: 28
- Deals fire damage
- Duration: 40 Seconds
- Continually deals fire damage to both the caster and enemies that are at least within dagger range of the player.
- As a continuous source of fire damage it can reliably reset the Frostbite status effect on enemies for build that inflict frost bite rapidly.
- Wearing the Royal Remains Set ensures the caster will never be killed by the DoT this incantation inflicts. The Blessed Dew Talisman, Blessing's Boon/Blessing of the Erdtree incantation, Icon Shield or Crimsonburst Crystal Tear can also mitigate it.
- BUG: As of Patch 1.08, there is an issue where a player can use Fire's Deadly Sin to accumulate Bleed build-up very quickly, from holding a weapon buffed with Bloodflame Blade. This has proven to be very effective in low-to-mid level invasions for Invaders against 3-players or less, as there is no effective countermeasure, it cannot be blocked, and all the player has to do is stay within Dagger-range to do a lot of damage. This even works on most Bosses in the game with minimal effort.
- This spell, along with Catch Flame and Flame Sling, doesn't have a sigil when casted, unlike other spells in the game, this may reference why Giant's Seal doesn't boosts the spells.
- This is a Body Buff and will not stack with other buffs of the same type.
- See Buffs and Debuffs for more information on stacking buffs.

So do you have to get the painting for the ghost to appear? Cause Leyndell is already buried in ash and I can’t seem to find him.

I use this to finish people off in colussuem. Equip fingerprint shield with scolar shield spell and then use fire deadly sin and run towards them. They will die eventually

This is the faith version of nightmaiden's mist, but it's attached to you rather than casting on a specific spot on the ground. it's supposed to be used on enemy groups. there is no point taking this to a single boss fight. you could pair this with gravity ash of wars, so enemies get drawn to you and your fire.

One of my favorite things about this incant is the flaming aura can hide the aura of the ruptured crystal tear. Only downside is people will want to stay away from you if you're burning them, but im working on using it against aggressive 3v1s to see if i can improve my sneaky explosion kills.
Overall, I like this spell especially for the initial flame burst as it has a decent aoe and comes out pretty fast.

Feels much better to use now that the blood flame glitch is gone. Serves a similar function to poison or the briar armor but doesn't feel as cheesy (lookin at you gugs poison pokers); opponents have to decide if they want to run away and disengage (also incentivizing more aggression on your behalf, since it only lasts so long and if it runs out, you basically just wasted hp and fp), or take a little bit of damage by getting up close. Good for finishing off players when they try running away at low health and get caught, and lower-hp enemies that try surrounding you.
You're not gonna kill anyone with it on its own and it does entail some risk, since you lose ~300hp overall, but this can be offset with heal-over-time incants pretty easily (which is usually what I do in pve) though obviously the more time doing set up the riskier things can become. I do wish the fire damage interrupted more enemies when they tried grabbed attacks (or did damage during grab attacks, since thatd be pretty funny), or that it reduced frost/poison buildup, but it feels pretty alright to use (though I did feel very mean using this incant and the raptor talons recently, very sorry random invader).
Definitely more difficult to deal with at lower lvls given the lower vig but just remember 1. the spells duration is a lot shorter than you'd expect 2. the fire damage done by it is always flat, so anything that decreases fire damage will help. 3. Try to use longer ranged weapons/spells/incants or legitimately just running (altho obviously be aware they're gonna try and get as close as possible to you)

Fire deadly sin self samage isn't affected by fire negation, it's not affected either by old lord talisman or flame protect me either. The winged sword insigna or hp regen talisman on successive attacks doesn't seem to affect either damage output. Stuff for charged attacks doesn't seem to affect it either but it does trigger the effect of the tear that restore hp upon taking damage. Holy ground is enough to restore more health than you loose while equipped with a +25 beast seal, tested.with 35 faith and 60 strength .so just like night maiden mist, it's not affected by anything. The damage output isn't affected by much boost, and sadly the damage output from fire deadly sin isn't much in front of night maiden mist, and stacking both means you have to stand i the mist, but even with the hp regen tear, talisman, the royal remain set, icon shield. With a +20 godslayer seal and 99faith,the ticks are 10 damage (while 4 with the other setup). with the 4hp damage on the first setup, and the damage from night maiden mist with the meteorite staff and 31 int, all this hp regen stuff (both hp regen tear, blessed dew, holy ground, royal remain icon shield) the hp regen isn't enough to hold night maiden mist self damage, so obviously not with fire deadly sin, so even with lots of health, you can't really use nmm and fds at the same time and stay in nmm in contact with the ennemy, but you can still use fire deadly sin and still regen enough hp to rise your hp. One way to be able to use both nmm and fds at the same time would be all that setup, and hitting often enough your ennemy using Prayerful strike on great star. Pretty tricky to do but the panic rolls from seeing both night maiden mist and fire deadly sin in a tight place makes that possible in pvp. Otherwise you can use things like burn o flame and flame of the fell god with fire deadly sin to stack a lot of flames on the ground at the same time, but it's hard to use too. The good thing on using flame grant me strength with nmm and fds is that it boost both of those. It's still really disappointing cause a build with both those spell would be fun. At least you can make a really fun build for pvp with both explosive tears, flame of the fell god and fire deadly sin. Casr the flame, then fds, rush the ennemy and go behind them, use the flask and look at them go on the flame, just follow them and they'll be blasted away by either the flame, or your fused bomb body

I don’t care if it isn’t really useful in any situations, pve or pvp, it’s just so cool

ran into some guy named melina in colloseumwho pointed at the erdtree and then casted this

Hmmm,
So i have to sacrifice let's say a black flame protection to use this spell and damage my self over time instead of giving myself a 35% damage negation.
I can't find the right words to put to this spell. Wouldn't it be better to just delete this from the game
- Anonymous
Fun combo, use this, then cast Zamor Ice Storm underneath big enemies and repeatedly proc Frostbite.
Since the bug has been fixed, I can now unironically use this alongside Bloodflame Blade without feeling like a nonce for doing so. If I'm being completely honest though, it was kind of cool to see two buffs that synergize together in a way that isn't related to numbers stacking multiplicatively with each other, and I hope in future titles From attempts to reuse the concept in an intentional and balanced way, rather than in a completely unintended and broken way.
- Anonymous
fires deadly sin deals 3 or 4 damage every 0.5 seconds (depending on if you charged it or not) it doesn’t scale with faith but can be increased with stuff like fire scorpion charm, wondrous physick FLAME-SHROUDING CRACKED TEAR, oil pot for a single hit of the flame.
- Anonymous
The name of this spell is so cool. Sounds like a heavy metal band.
- Anonymous
I have a crazy build in mind with this spell and Prelettes Charge

Everyone talks about fires deadly and status efectes like bloodflame and death blight, but who remembers this with golden retailiation? Every time u got hurt from fires deady you could shoot the homing holy missle.
- Anonymous
It's worth running this spell just to ever so slowly drain low hp players desperately running and rolling away. It's quite a funny and helpless encounter when it plays out just right.
- Anonymous
I hope they buff this some how because now that the IGN build is gone (Finally) its just a mediocre spell that damages you more then your opponent
- Anonymous
Since this does fire damage to you does this activate the crimsonwhorl bubbletear that heals you when taking elemental damage?
- Anonymous
Now that the glitch is gone we can discuss ways to make it useful. The flames should linger a long time on the floor, making this ok for defensive play. And a boost or cure to most statuses would be useful, given you’re taking negative regen on a body buff slot.
- Anonymous
Looks like they fixed the status proc glitch, doesn't work for me now.
- Anonymous
I love seeing people still trying to pull off the bloodflame glitch. Its so precious.
- Anonymous
Can't believe it took an entire year for From to patch that cancer of a glitch when the likes of SoNaF and Moonveil got nuked almost immediately. Hell even BHS and RoB took a hit ~6 months in.
This+ barbaric roar+ as much lava and fire as you can= Laurence the first vicar

i only started ng+6 only because i want this not because i heard of the glitch but because it looks cool

Would be nice if it prevented all buildup of Poison and Rot while it's active, alongside Frostbite.
Compared to Flame Cleanse Me which is cheaper and easier to obtain, Fire's Deadly Sin could have the niche of actively countering those statuses and preventing procs only at the cost of a small constant DoT and no body buffs.
Instead of recasting Flame Cleanse Me every time you're in the Lake of Rot, or eating a bolus in duels/invasions making you vulnerable, you could just cast Fire's Deadly Sin beforehand and not have any concerns for 40 seconds. The mediocre AOE fire chip damage would become a bonus instead of the underwhelming focus of the spell outside of Frost builds.
- Anonymous
Besides resetting Frostbite this skills seems rather weak. The Damage is as pitiful as its range and the fact its a body buff has it competing with Grant me Strength which doesn't just provide a buff to Fire damage but also Physical. I suppose you could meme and combine the incantation with Elmir's Set or Lightning Ram but that doesn't sound too great either.
- Anonymous
I honestly don't care about you as a person, but your capacity for rationale is in question if you honestly thought a spell called Fire's Deadly Sin was ever meant to proc Chilling Mist for crying out loud, like, forget having poor integrity, you'd have to be ridiculously obtuse to think this was in any way intended.
- Anonymous
Man, i remember the dark souls days, when people just stfu and figured out how to overcome problems with overused stuff, now they all just whine to daddy miyazaki to make the whole game revolve around them and what they like/dont like. This is like the most controversial spell in a FROM game to date lol
- Anonymous
Finally I can use this incantation without people thinking I’m trying to use the FDS glitch. Thank god that glitch is gone since it was pure cancer to fight against and the only hard counter to it was law of regression which is 1. Only available on int builds due to high requirements and 2. Has a super long cast time often leading to them getting a free hit in. Or often they’ll just run away until they can reapply the glitch.
Finally this incantation can be used for its intended purpose of being a good way to reset frostbite quickly and providing small chip damage to nearby enemies.
- Anonymous
I wouldn't call this incantation useless:
80 strength, cold great omenkiller cleaver, wildstrikes, shard of alexander, and this incantation will turn you into a perpetual frostbite proc machine: the added bleed damage stacks with other damage buffs for bleedbuilds if you want to squeeze even more damage out.
- Anonymous
Yea this spell is completely useless after patching the poison mist, chilling mist, bloodflame interaction. Really enjoyed instant proccing frostbite over and over....someone always ruins the fun builds for EVERYONE by taking this **** into PVP.thanks alot bloodhound step/FDS/bloodflame users. You ****ing suck.

Bloodflame is fixed, but what about poison miat AOW and chilling mist AOW, have their interactions been patched out as well?

How has this spell + Bloodflame Blade not been patched yet? Hasn't it been in the game for quite a while? This can't be an intended interaction, right?

i got summoned to a mimic tear boss fight, by a guy whose name was "I WANT TO RUN", and in the fight the mimic tear used the bloodblade and fire´s deadly sin and i was having trouble, to deal with that, then i remembered that i had the innescapable frenzy incantation, when i used it, the one who summoned me sent me home but he did it too late, in the end i ended up killing it before returning home (frogot to say that the guy did nothing but just stand where the entrance was and watch me fight the mimic tear)

Great to cheese NPC invaders via combo with bloodflame blade. Don't be a troll in pvp with it, but if hoslow and his bleed whips are a pain, return the favor

Good news everyone! We've finally figured out what the deadly sin of fire is! It's using this with bloodflame blade.
- Anonymous
Making the user immune to frostbite would make it used more in PvP though they should clean the bugs first.

POV: You really, REALLY want to pretend you're good at PvP

I stg everytime i use this i find some new stupid bugged interaction with it

Two things about this spell. One, it removes the frostbite debuff from your enemies so you can frostbite them again. Two, if your weapon has a debuff on it, the damage over time applies it. Bleed, frost, poison, bloodflame, blackflame, maybe even rot. This seems like a meme spell, but it's possible to make it work.
- Anonymous
It's not mentioned anywhere that you can actually charge this spell. It causes it to do about double damage, based on very, very little testing. This increases the damage you put out and how much you take. The amount you take might not quite be doubled, but it is enough to start burning through the Blessed Dew Talisman's regen faster than it can reasonably keep up.
- Anonymous
you can mitigate it with the frenzy scream spell and also just learned from pvp that if you have a weapon with bloodflame blade it gradually builds up bleed damage to foes
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
So don’t think anyone else has commented on this but FDS actually causes blood loss to build up. Had it used against me and used on others and PvE. PvP takes around 5 seconds full exposure to proc around the same for PvE.
Combine FDS with blood flame on a buffable bleed weapon and you can proc like every 3 seconds. Raddon almost didn’t go second phase on me it’s that fast.

Okay Ymfah and Backlogs, you've done your Immolation only DS2 runs, now do your Elden Ring Fire's Deadly Sin Only runs
tested self damage Jan 12 2023
charged cast deals 328, 8.2/sec for 40 sec
tapcast deals 246, 6.15/sec for 40 sec
unaffected by incant scaling, max hp, and fire resist, including negative absorptions from soreseals and scorpion charms

if using this to set up red feathered branch sword:
vigor / max hp / casts needed
1-9 / 262-410 / charged x1

At lvl 300+ you start doing crazy ****. I got bored and wanted to see if i could make an effective frost build as a faith/arcane hybrid, yes i know it sounds crazy but hear me out...
I call this the "stupid turtle" because it requires zero INT investment...With 80/80 faith/arc and only 9 int, a +24 cross naginata has 104 frostbite build up and 45 blood loss....its very high.
Now, i know im gunna get some hate for this, but....
Fires deadly sin with a frost cross naginata infused with chilling mist...it stacks frostbite STUPID fast....with this build i use an eclipse crest shield and guard boost talisman...i can shield poke with a naginata that has 104 frostbite, plus the chilling mist buff, AND the frost ticks from FDS...this absolutely WRECKS malenia... im talking back to back frostbites, 30-40% health chunks in a matter of 60 seconds or so...the instant frost reset of FDS is broken as hell and rising frost resistance means absolutely nothing to this build because the status is being applied in ungodly amounts....if you really wanna be toxic use poisonous mist with FDS before the frost procs and youve got poison flames....
Now i have to say this, i do NOT use this in PVP its a surefire way to get an exploded inbox...im sure others know about this build but i just wanted to share my exp, its really fun to co op with this build. Stay frosty my friends!
This seems worth mentioning, FDS WILL apply on hit effects of your weapon, IE weapon buffs like poisonous mist AOW, chilling mist AOW, bloodflame still works, and blackflame blade, they all apply to the ticks of FDS. You can apply black flame debuff through FDS and drain HP like a vampire.the possibilities with this are endless.IIRC you can even buff with lightning and deal lightning damage through the FDS flames. Havent tested that recently but i know it used to apply lightning damage.

It is my belief that this incantations was always meant to work in conjunction with Bloodflame Blade. The only use this has outside of that is to protect you from frostbite or permit you to inflict frostbite on an enemy more frequently which would be a much less efficient way to seal massive damage vs a standard bleed based build. Considering this can only last for 40 seconds (assuming we aren’t using the Old Lord’s Talisman), I don’t see this as any more game breaking than the Sacred Relic Sword or Comet Azur + Cerulean Hidden Tear. If you don’t like people using this in PvP just run away from them until it runs out. The time it will take them to reapply this buff will give you all the opportunity you need to punish them. I truly hope they never “fix” this.
- Anonymous
Kinda disappointed that the burning after casting the big flames doesn’t scale. It doesn’t even get buffed by the flame shrouding tear… the spell is pretty freaking useless besides the aoe but the damage from that is mediocre even when buffed.. Regardless I still use it to flex on fellow co ops and hosts lol. But does anyone know how much poise damage it deals? Please tell me it’s a decent amount, because otherwise this incant is complete trash and is only good for a glitch.
- Anonymous
The fact this works with Bloodflame is hilarious and I am going to use this as long as I can
- Anonymous
The worst part about this isn't the IGN build glitch, its the fact that when you use it people just assume you're doing the IGN build glitch and run until it expires.

This incantation is kinda bonkers because you can use bloodflame blade on your right hand weapon and it will proc bloodflames dot bleed effect when you’re near enemies. Haven’t tested with blackflame but it probably also works.
It really sucks that this is a body buff. As cool as it is, it's very hard to justify it over Flame, Grant Me Strength.

Black Knife on one hand; Blade of Calling on the other one; Millicent's Prosthesis; Rotten Winged Sword Insignia; and Malenia's Great Rune.
Cast this and play like a rabid madman, feels good.

Don't know if this is known yet but Flame, Protect me and Black Flame's Protection both cancel this spell, Found out when messing around with spells earlier

As of 1.07.1, this incantation applies the on-hit status effect/s of buffing incantations like Bloodflame Blade and Black Flame Blade. It does not however apply the innate status effect of your weapon.
- Anonymous
I really like this incant, but everybody who I use it against just assumes I'm glitching and proceeds to sweat their ass off and run around in circles.

Watch out!
New glitch alert!
This and bandit curved swords in some sort of combination does bleed buildup every second! Just fought someone and they used this glitch and after I died my meter filled up twice with bleed damage.

To give this an actual purpose aside from Bloodflame Blade cheese, Fire's Deadly Sin should rapidly decrease status build up over time, essentially turning it into both a chip damage tool and a slower version of Flame, Cleanse me that works over time.
- Anonymous
can someone please edit the guide? a) fire scorpion charm and b)Flame-Shrounding Cracked Tear both DO buff the dmg of this incantation. c) you can use the incantation Bestial Vitality in addition to the aforementioned self-damage-mitigations (not sure, but as Blessing's Boon is an AoE it might even stack, cannot test myself atm). Cheers and TiA

This should increase the fire damage you deal by a fair bit, would make it worth more than exploit cheese
it also works with chilling mist to give you a frost aura
