Guardian's Swordspear Poison Upgrades

Requires regular reinforcement with Smithing Stone [1]Smithing Stone [2]Smithing Stone [3]Smithing Stone [4]Smithing Stone [5]Smithing Stone [6]Smithing Stone [7]Smithing Stone [8], and Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone, as well as Poison Affinity Ashes of War.

Elden Ring display values for poison and blood include buildup added by scaling via the Arcane Stat. The values on this table reflect the default values only. Your own Arcane Scaling will alter the number while inside the game. If you don't meet the arcane requirements for an arcane-scaling passive then buildup will show as 60% of the base values.

This upgrade can't be enchanted with Magic or boosted with Consumables.

Contrary to what someone said below, this weapon does not deal as much stagger damage as other halberds. This can be demonstrated by testing it on big enemies such as the ones by the Underground Roadside site of grace. When two handed, other halberds will interrupt them on nearly every hit, whereas this one doesn't do anything with its R1s.

      • Anonymous

*Knowing* that this deals halberd-level stagger while being much faster is so different to actually using it, this thing hits like a truck

        • Anonymous

surprisingly, the Keen Swordspear outclasses its Quality counterpart even on a Quality build.

Giant Hunt and Sword Dance are two of the best ashes for it. Can't go wrong with yeeting Battlemages and Alecto onto the sky.

          • Anonymous

Anyone have suggestions for an AoW for this on a dex build? I'm looking for something that can stagger bosses and right now it just looks like using FotR is still the best for that.

            • Anonymous

Not only do these drop like crazy, not only do they have amazing drip.... But they also do a hefty chunk of damage. Yesterday I invaded with this as my primary weapon. I fought ten or so overlevelled phantoms with this, half of them wielding the blood naginata. I felt unstoppable as I made each and every one of them regret not just taking the L.

              • Anonymous

I was thinking I was going to stick with just two-handing this weapon for a melee playthrough.

Then RNG was nice enough to drop me another. Powerstance jump L1's basically shreds through this game. Rest of the powerstance moveset is kinda garbage but the fantastic one-handed moveset more than makes up for it.

                • Anonymous

This is another one of those weapons that drops rarely from a fairly ordinary enemy that turns out to be incredibly strong. It's one of the surprise high tier weapons out of nowhere for DEX builds similar to the Envoy's Longhorn for Faith builds. I'd agree that Sword Dance is very strong on this weapon and is pretty FP efficient. You could play through the entire game with this peculiar halberd. It doesn't stagger often, but you can overcome one of its very few weaknesses with jump attacks when you need to stagger an enemy. The move set and damage are very good. It's definitely worth a bit of farming.

I got one of these on my first playthrough and dismissed it when i saw rankedboost assigned it to F tier. More recently i got wrecked by one in Pvp so i gave it a closer look and darned if its not my new favorite weapon. Throw a lightning infusion on there, or a cold, I imagine blood would wreck as well. It has a unique diagonal slash thats faster that other halberds, great for applying status effects. If this weapon has a weakness its catching every wall so watch out for that.

a good place to farm this is around minor erdtree church in altus plateau. there are 6 guardians around the church. https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Minor+Erdtree+Church

I came to love this weapon on my first playthrough. It's moveset is versatile, it can use a wide variety of Ashes, and it gets amazing scaling, up to an A in Dex. I personally like to use the Ice Spear Ash on it. Sword Dance and Double Slash are also a great choices. But it synergises really well with a lot of ashes. Amazing weapon. Strong as hell, fast and versatile. I'm using it at +25 on NG+ and it shreds.

Grinded this out, weapon is wild. Awesome scaling, good raw damage, fast R1s considering the weapon class with good reach and horizontal range, with handy thrusts with the running and backsteps. All this with the high poise damage halberds provide. Certainly usable as a primary weapon but is also a great one hand option if you want to use another weapon or shield. (I'm planning on pairing it with the Frozen Needle)

If you want to grind it I had the best luck in Weeping Peninsula: Head south from the northmost church towards the lesser erdtree, there's a few packs of guardians chilling out. There's also three en route to the bridge near the Demi-Human chief. There's a catacomb near the path towards the tree that has a grace so it's a short walk out to farm them.

This weapon is ****ing insane. Starts getting A scaling in dex after +10. Use this with dragon cult stuff and you will casually put down some of the hardest enemies in the game. Mix a lightning cracked tear into the physic for some ludicrous numbers. Im in ng+4 and I haven’t encountered an enemy that this thing doesn’t flat out overpower after a lightning buff. Give it sword dance too if you dont mind making the game too easy.

Cragblade and guardian set if you want to do a cosplay of the ones in the capital that turn theirs into a hammer

                              • I have a spreadsheet which calculates Attack Rating. This Swordspear has the highest AR (785 1H) out of all weapons if you have 80 dex and Keen. The Giant-Crusher, Duelist Greataxe, Fallingstar Beast Jaw and Prelate's Inferno Crozier have higher AR but they are also FAR slower.
Therefore this is the best dex weapon if you are looking for a hard hitting dex weapon.

Excluding the fat and heavy weapons. The next best ones are, in terms of AR:

                                - Godslayer's Greatsword (780)

                                - Dragon King's Cragblade (739)

                                - Bloodhound's Fang (736)

TL;DR I am bad at video games and spacing.
So I have a bit of rant about this weapon (And Loretta's sickle, since it shares the same moveset), and it mostly has to do with how bad I am at the game. I won't pretend that it's the game's fault that I can't use a good weapon to its full effect. But goddamn do I have problems hitting just about anything reliably with this thing. Give me a stabby halberd, I can hit pretty reliably. Give me a swingy halberd, and I can hit more reliably. But I don't know if it's because I'm used to those movesets from previous FROM games, or if the hitboxes are actually very weird on the swordspear, but by god I can't hit the broad side of a barn with this thing. And that isn't to say that I think the weapon is bad, or even that I don't like it. On a dex build, this thing rules, bar none. And on the Elden Beast, since it has some dummy thicc hurt boxes, the swordspear can actually shine very well. But in most other situations, I'm just too bad with it to find it practical to use.
PS sorry to the mod that has to review this comment, it has basically no real substance beyond me venting about being bad.

Best place to farm this at lower levels is in the weeping peninsula. Head south from Church of Pilgrimage until you hit a fork in the road. There's 3 guardians down the left path towards the bridge. The right path at fork headed towards the Erdtree has 5 before the summit then 3 on top patrolling the summit where you fight the avatar. Once all are dead just teleport back to the church. Rinse and repeat.

The best mid/late-game farm is definitely in Dragonbarrow, from the Dragonbarrow Fork grace, there are at least 50 guardians in total. Go east up the hill and loop back west from the Minor Erdtree up the second hill to fight them all.

                                      • I put the Ice Spear ASH of war on this and its so strong! Has 106 passive frost build up at level +20...the special ability has good range and its attacks are quick. I was actually surprised at how good this weapon is. Will definitely be making it +24, maybe +25. I have 60 int and 35 dex and this does more damage than +9 moonveil

An easy place to farm this early is at the Converted tower site of grace in far southwest Liurnia. There’s 4 or 5 enemies that drop it among the pots at the Little Erdtree

Use thunderbolt ash of war with lightning incantation buff to produce your own version of The Nameless Kings Sword Spear from DS3.

This slaps on a dex build. Put Keen infusion on this and with 55 or 80 dex, you'll have around 680 / 780 pure physical AR at +25 with a pretty fast moveset. (You can also put RKR for more destruction)

This is such a awesome weapon for a faith build put fire in it and watch it spread everything both on pve and pvp.

Is there anything else beside Loretta's weapon that has the kind of range and attack speed this thing has?

                                                  • Anonymous

This thing with Cold or Blood affinity is no joke; it's got excellent buildup per swing, while retaining its excellent attack speed, reach, and base damage.

                                                    • Anonymous

Looking at the weapon comparison table, it seems that this is the only weapon in the game that completely loses its strength scaling when keen infused instead of just having it dramatically reduced. Did they forget to add it or something? Not like it means much of anything but I just found it interesting.

                                                      • Anonymous

Fun-fact: The Sword-Spear was a real weapon that was only ever recorded to be used widely in a single military army (I can't remember specifically which medieval country since been a long time since I read about it), and it was considered fairly effective as a weapon (being as long as a spear but having a blade that ran about half the length of the shaft with the added benefit of a crossguard). However for the costs involved in production, and the fact that the versatility added from the slashing/guarding of a sword-ended polearm was less beneficial when used in formations/battles (since everyone is basically just thrusting/advancing should-to-shoulder), they quickly fell out of use and became a obscure weapon historically. However it is worth noting that they were said (from the few manuals/manuscripts that mention them) that they were a fairly effective weapon in the hands of a trained fighter and likely would've been used by individual bodyguards or sellswords more than full-scale armies had they caught on in popularity. But generally (as with much of history) it was cheaper and easier to produce regular spears/pikes/halberds and train soldiers to use those instead (since why bother spending a ton of money to train 1 guy to use a sword-spear, when you could turn around and have 100 men armed with spears for dirt cheap who only need to know "pointy end goes into the enemy", and then use the extra cash to get them better armour).

                                                        • Anonymous

After reading thru the comments, I decided to bring a litle clarification to the "this weapon deals 0 stagger/poise damage" comments.

This absoloutely beautiful weapon is a halberd but with very fast kind of slashing diagonal attacks. The attack speed is closely comparable to 2 handed Katana attacks. It is not quite as fast but comes close, while dealing substantial amounts of damage. The possible damage output is definetly one of the highest if not the highest of all halberds, thanks to its exceptional scalings.

HOWEVER, it is definetly true, that the Guardian's Swordspear deals far less stagger damage than regular halberds. In the stagger department it is once again comparable to something like a Katana, BUT the poise damage is a completely different thing!
Guardian's Swordspear poise breaks enemies with the SAME amount of hits as a regular halberd needs! I tested this on the Blackflame Monk elite mob in the Divine Tower of Cealid basement and no matter what halberd I used and no matter the upgrade level, the Monk's poise broke and he was open for a riposte, after 6 hits. The fact that the Guardian's Swordspear breaks poise with just as many hits as any other halberd, while having a way faster moveset, makes this a top tier poise break weapon when mainly using R1 attacks!

To clarify the difference between stagger and poise/stance damage:

Stagger damage describes a weapons capability to make enemies flinch and also interrupting their attacks.

Poise/Stance damage, is the damage a weapon deals to the targets Poise HP. This Poise HP varies from enemy to enemy but usually is around 30 HP for trash mobs, 60-80 HP for Elite Mobs like Knights, and the Blackflame Monk I was testing this on and ultimately up to 100 HP for Bosses (some boss enemies seem to have slightly less or more than 100). Once this Poise HP is depleted an enemy poise breaks and is open for a riposte/critical hit. This btw is also the reason why Flames of the Redmane is considered so strong, since it deals 40 poise damage, stance breaking pretty much everything in maximum 3 casts!

So to clarify this once again, stagger and poise damage are NOT the same thing. Stagger and poise damage are usually determined by weapon class, with heavier and bigger weapons like Colossal Weapons, Great Hammers and to some extend Halberds having higher stagger and poise damage than other classes, but this is not always the case!
That is also the reason why Ashes of War like Sword Dance can deal ungodly amounts of stagger damage, but need like 500 casts to poise break someone.

The Guardian's Swordspear f.e is a Halberd, with acorrding to its weapon class, normal poise damage but pretty low stagger damage. Thats why this whole stagger poise thing is a little confusing.
I hope I was able to clarify this and with that, help some of you guys to understand this not really explained but very important concept of gameplay.
And also, don't get scared away from this stunning weapon because it has low stagger! Poise break is more important really and if you need to stagger knights or some other pain in the a** enemies, use some stagger Ashes of War like Sword Dance and Storm Assault. Storm Assault is rly fun albeit not as reliable as Sword Dance. Give it a try!

                                                                  • Anonymous

Powerstance keen version+ Claw talisman + Raptor Black Feathers + Royal Knight's resolve on both + Flame Grant me Strength + Jump attack only.

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                            • Anonymous

I'm using it with cold ashes of war for the mixed damage and the status effect, but I don't know how it will do VS keen scalling at +25, everything taken into consideration.

                                                                              • Anonymous

Very fun, fast, graceful weapon, but it lacks much poise damage so you'll need to use Ashes for knights and other heavy enemies. Great scaling ensures you can get some incredible damage output from it. Definitely worth trying if you get ahold of it.

                                                                                • Anonymous

Great for Dex/Fait 50/50 builds. WA cost only 6 FP and deals extreme demage. It makes many Boss fights trivial. U just run around than charge deal like 3k and move back for new opportunity.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

Attacks start low and end high, have a good balance of close and long range, and don’t leave you vulnerable for long periods of time. I’ve paired it with Storm Assault as I feel it’s the perfect complement to its move set. I can’t see myself ever going back to a normal spear or halberd.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

I guess I'm cool with that but dang, nothing even comes close to this bad boy so far.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                                          • Anonymous

The weapon that has changed my build from Strength/Faith to Dexterity/Faith. Just a really fun weapon, definitely recommend picking it up at least to try it out. It is a bit odd to get used to, but once you do, it's very nice and it actually packs quite a punch!

                                                                                            • Anonymous

Another fantastic weapon that's easily overlooked due to a low drop rate. Great range, great speed, amazing scaling, and running R1 pokes makes this a beast in PvE and PvP.

Sword dance is one of the best ashes to pair it with for some rapid gap closing and high stagger damage

                                                                                              • Anonymous

I really like how light this thing feels. I've been using it in a STR/INT build with Glintstone Phalanx ashes for poise breaking. It's been great.

                                                                                                • I like this weapon but I wish the moveset for polearms weren't so stiff, this one is the most agile one yet they didn't do anything cool aside from making it sweep more than poke
I wish it had some overhead spinning attack like the Black Knight Halberd or the Splitleaf Greatsword
I guess the Splitleaf Greatsword was a weapon skill.

I just wish acrobatic agile style spears were more common

                                                                                                  • The fact that you get such a unique moveset and can still use pretty much whatever Ashes you want to makes this thing so good in PvP. It can be somewhat difficult to land the lights at times, but the intimidation factor of these super fast and swooping attacks is nothing to scoff at. Additionally, since the sweeps have such a wide arc in such a limited cone, they're great for roll catching because people roll away from the start and land in the ending.

                                                                                                    • One of my favourite PvP weapons, especially when paired with a Lucerne. The combo allows you to vary swing speed and direction a lot, making for some good versatility and fun. The Swordspear itself has decent range, great speed and solid damage. The only downside is the fact that walls and uneven floors often screw up attacks. Despite that, it's my go-to for open spaces. Most Ashes work well on it, the faster the better. Any good gap closer makes this thing scary.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

This weapon is the answer to the question: "What if the gargoyle flame spear from ds3 did 700 damage per running attack?" This would be on the top of the nerf list if it wasn't for things like moonveil and rivers of blood.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

The description clearly states it was "Sharpened" by wood from old trees, not that the weapon itself is made of the same wood or any wood for that matter. Furthermore, the entire Guardian set has gold adornments and the weapon itself matches many gold-like items in the game, indicating that it in fact might be made of gold as well.
