Incarnate a cold, dark moon and launch it at foes.

Ranni's Dark Moon is a Sorcery in Elden Ring. Ranni's Dark Moon spell launches a dark moon at foes. Updated to Patch 1.07.
Legendary sorcery associated with the Carian queen.
Uses the caster as a vessel to incarnate a cold, dark moon, then sends it floating toward foes. The dark moon dispels all sorcery that touches it, and temporarily reduces magic damage negation for those it strikes.
This moon was encountered by a young Ranni, led by the hand of her mother, Rennala. What she beheld was cold, dark and veiled in occult mystery.
Where to find Ranni's Dark Moon
Where to find Ranni's Dark Moon:
- Chelona's Rise: Found in a chest at the top of the tower after unlocking the seal. See the Chelona's Rise page for details on how to unseal the tower. [Elden Ring Map Link]
- Note: This spell and the location it is found in is accessible only after you have made significant progress in Ranni's questline which will grant you access to the upper plateau in southwest Liurnia.
Elden Ring Ranni's Dark Moon Guide
- Full Moon Sorcery
- Stamina Cost: 32
- This sorcery is boosted by the Carian Regal Scepter, as well as the Snow Witch Hat.
- This sorcery deals magic damage, and will build Frostbite (270) on vulnerable enemies. It is possible it will apply it immediately.
- Reduces the target's magic negation by 20% (10% in PVP). If this manages to trigger Frostbite on your target, which reduces damage negation by a further 20%, total reduction is around ~30%.
- Damage negation lasts for one minute.
- This spell reduces damage negation. It does not mean an enemy will take 10% more damage. The amount of increased damage a target will take is thus based upon how much magic negation they have.
- Ranni's Dark Moon draws in other sorcery in its path and cancels them out.
- Further testing may be required to determine exactly when this property begins.
- While it may have incredibly high damage, Ranni's Dark Moon has a long casting animation and can be canceled if struck by an enemy before the projectile launches.
- This is a Power Shred Debuff and will not stack with other debuffs of the same type.
- See Buffs and Debuffs for more information on stacking debuffs.
- NOTE: Since Patch 1.07 FP Consumption has been Decreased from 62 to 57.

I don't think this spell needs a buff. It isn't meant to be a nuke (despite performing as such), but it's best used as a debuffer. 30% damage taken increase from all magic sources is nothing to scoff at when when you have spells like gavel of haima cristal torrent or shard spiral on your kit (RIP maliketh) + it blocks spells as it advances, so it can counter a lot of big boom spells if timed right, such as giantsflame take thee.
- Anonymous
I like this spell as a space closer. Debuffs, looks cool. Not really worried about damage. Cuz if they come within range, Royal Greatsword will tear them up. Only really use spells when they're trying to keep their distance
- Anonymous
This spells pretty situationally good in my opinion especially against Malenia. You can safely shoot two Moons at her when you enter the boss arena due to her being so far away, Inflicting both the debuff unique to the moon spells but also frostbite which increases damage taken by 20% for 30 seconds as well as chunking her health. Great tracking as well due to it's somewhat slow speed meaning you can consistently do this on each attempt and with a bit of luck you can take advantage of the increased damage to absolutely decimate her health bar with either spells or skills.
- Anonymous
Extremely telegraphed and easy to dodge, ridiculous stat requirements. Pure ass
- Anonymous
Please people who use this spell level up your vigor for **** sake
- Anonymous
I don't think this move is weak like the other are saying, although they surely need to increase its range and aoe.
- Anonymous
this is ranni's outer god btw to anyone who say "ranni ending has no outer gods" her moon and her mom's moon are both different outer gods
- Anonymous
The best way to use this FP hog in my experience is as an opener for the Defense Shred, the Frostbite or both. After that you'll be better off throwing out your preferred ranged damage option and watch the damage wrack up, especially if standing in Terra Magicka and buffed with a custom Flask.

This really needs to be buffed. Currently its basically useless. Also, carian retaliation shouldn't work properly against this sorcery, they both cancel spells so logically the dark moon and the retaliation should fizzle out if anything

One place where I absolutely loved this spell was the Haligtree. Very easy to kill those giant Oracle Envoys with this, since their bubble barrages are completely nulified.
- Anonymous
i feel like this needs hyper armor, better tracking, or both to be more worth the time considering its high int requirement
- Anonymous
I love things with random side effects you get to see randomly work at times. Pretty cool by the time you forget it cancels other spells and incants it eats another one and you're all "cool"
- Anonymous
Where’s the hyper armor on this thing? I’m up in the air about to release it and getting hit canceled it out, this thing is straight trash
- Anonymous
Gotta say, severely let down by this spell. At 70 intelligence with carian regal Scepter +9 and the magic scorpion charm it hits for around 1500, that's with the damage bonus from the enemy being unaware. Meanwhile with the exact same setup plus godfrey icon a charged R2 from the dark moon greatsword hits for 2000 and a charged comet hits for 1700.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
I feel like If you drink the stuff to negate FP consumion and enhance magic damage + snow witch hat + Carian Regal Scepter + the spell you can Cast on the ground to buff damage, then using comet azur...sounds way to good to be true.
- Anonymous
2 of these against Malenia and you will melt her lifebar away with magic.
- Anonymous
For those interested - after buffs it has around 2 seconds cast time and after being cast has about 1 second delay where it moves slowly, then it greatly accelerates.
- Anonymous
I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but I feel like Ranni's Dark Moon and Rennala's Full Moon seem to refer to different moons in their item description.
"Queen Rennala encountered 'this' enchnating moon...
" 'This' moon was encountered by a young Ranni..."
Since you can see two moons from Moonlight Altar, I think it makes sense.
- Anonymous
Rennala's full moon with 83 intelligence, carian regal and graven mass talisman does 1714 damage to a shield godrick soldier, ranni's dark moon only does 1571, but ranni's does frost, and can be boosted by the witch hat, so if you care about making a complete fashion build but still want the most effective moon, rennala's does more damage, but ranni's does ice
- Anonymous
In co-op, having this at a slower cast speed for the Godfrey/Hoarah Loux boss fight is actually better imo. The delayed cast means you hang in the air, and out of range of the boss's arena-encompassing stomp attack, for a longer amount of time. You can still time it correctly with a fast cast speed, but you get a bigger margin of error the slower it is.
- Anonymous
This spell is great as an opening move for tough enemies or bosses. Two casts in rapid succession is usually enough to proc frostbite for many bosses (and while you get the 10% magic resistance debuff from hitting it I don't believe it stacks), but the long cast time and the ease at which you can get knocked out of the animation makes this not viable to use in the middle of the fight.
- Anonymous
Fun fact, if you cast Ranni's Dark moon and Rennala's Full moon to make them collide, Ranni's cancels out Rennala's
- Anonymous
Super cool spell. Great effect, very fun to cast.
Bit situational - slow to cast and therefore not time efficient on enemies with already low magic defence given that it reduces magic damage negation by a percentage - it doesn't straight up cause you to deal 10% more damage, to my understanding. I am open to correction on this, but this is how I understand it based on the wording here.
Where this is really worthwhile is on bosses with high magic resistance. Still, if you can't get it off straightaway, I wouldn't bother. If they have 30% mitigation and you reduce it to 27%, that's not a great result. Again, I am basing this on my understanding of the wording, and am open to corrections.
- Anonymous
Damn I wish I could up my int to 68 on my 120lv build just for this beauty, but I need some int and dex for wider variety of cool weapons. That's a damn high requirement :( On the other hand the higher fth req for incantations is 50...
- Anonymous
Ok so I made this super strong able to 1-2 shot most enemies normal damage with no buffs Is about 1000 but if you use the following you can make the damage about 5x stronger
1: snow witch hat 10% dmg
2: magic scorpion charm 12% dmg
3: red feathered branchsword below 20% hp 20% dmg boost (use seppuku to reduce health)(alternatively ritual sword talisman 10% dmg at full hp)
4: Lord of bloods exultation 20% dmg again use seppuku to proc this also
5: graven mass talisman 8% dmg
6: commanders standard ash of war not sure but I think it's 15-20% dmg
7: any weapon with seppuku to proc 2 talismans
8: 2 yes 2 carian regal scepters 1 for each hand while casting the spell 15% dmg boost then another 15 on top so u get about 32-33% boost from those
9: Terra magica spell 35% dmg
10: magic shrouding cracked tear 20% dmg boost(not positive if it's 20% or 30%)
11: when you cast the spell the targets magic resistance is reduced by 10%
12: frost status effect on target further reduces targets resistances by 20%
I didn't try this on any boss but I was able to turn the base 1000 damage into a 1 shot 4996 damage which is insanely high and that was without #11 and 12 being active on the target
Give this a try I'm interested to see what else is possible and how much damage everyone else is capable of getting specially on a boss that can take alot of hits
- Anonymous
This spell lets you kill some tough bosses with like 4 hits. But to other bosses like fire giant it does jack, not even seems to hit him at all. So performance is very fluctuating to say the least.
- Anonymous
So let me get this straight. This spell causes massive magic damage...lowers damage negation on target...AND absorbs incoming spells? Damn Ranni you cray
- Anonymous
does old lord's talisman boost the length of the 10% debuff?
- Anonymous
I cant get this because the airlift thats supposed to be the last one is broken and it wont open
- Anonymous
they should increase the int requirements by 1. for balance reasons, of course.
- Anonymous
description makes it sound like rennala entrusted ranni to renna (who is being referred to as "the moon"), either renna is mother or sister to rennala. ice crest shield refers to a frost themed carian princes, and that could very well be renna.
- Anonymous
It used to reduce magic negation by 30% + frostbite. Now it's 10% + frostbite after patch ?
They Must Buff and ReBuff Cold Sorceries and Cold Ashes of War!
Glintstone Icecrag: was left out of the massive Glintstone Overhaul Treatment: the range is terribly poor, the tracking is nonexistent, the Projectile is slow and worst of all: Can't be Charged!
Frozen Mist: is underpowered, weak and mostly ineffective or useless.
Frozen Armament is incredibly worthless and useless, and I doubt anybody ever used it.
Zamor Icestorm: cool idea but it's incredibly slow and vulnerable, no Poise or guard while casting do gets interrupted easily, small radius and short duration.
Adula's Moonblade got Butchered and Nerfed to the Ground as everyone agrees, needlessly (while they buffed 100 Incantations and weapons)
Ice Spear is good, butpoor range and tracking.
Hoarfrost Stomp is unusable and garbage now.
Frost Mist AoW is underpowered and not worth it.
They have to Buff and Improve all Cold Sorceries.
Ranni's Dark Moon should count as Charging Spell for Godfrey Talisman with how long a Cast it has!

So you have some unimportant math about this spells frostbite ( could already have frostbite from somewhere else so pretty irrelevant on this page imo) but not how long the debuff lasts? Come on guys get your **** together already
- Anonymous
I'm sorry but this spell is doodoo. For how difficult it is to obtain and how high its requirements are, the damage is just depressing. It barely outdamages loretta's greatbow which costs less than half the fp, has a shorter cast time, and only requires 26 int.

Does Rannis Moon Cancel the affect of Rennalas or how does it work?
- Anonymous
Testing this against an aware giant, it increased my damage output by 32%. 1.1 Moon debuff x 1.2 Frostbite debuff = 1.32 Total Debuff
- Anonymous
It didn't give it to me for some reason when I got invaded as I opened it
This spell OWNS against Godfrey Hoarah Loux GROUND STOMPS!
It completely 100% Evades and ignores the Stomp Shock Wave. You can keep blasting without interference.
Also effective Vs other ground jumpable waves AOE and low sweeping slashes. I managed to dodge Rykard sword sweep like this!

"Ranni's Dark Moon" sounds like it's describing her butt.
- Anonymous
What does "cold" damage mean here? I get frost bite, but I don't think there is cold damage-type in game. Cold infusion adds magic to weapons and armors have no such defence. Could someone who has this test if Terra Magica (magic only boost) buffs this spell?

Incarnate a cold, dark moon and launch it at foes. Quite thrilling.

but its not better than Rennalas unfortunately, it uses more FP and does less damage, kinda bummer konsidering the ultimate Ranni sorcery could overtake her mothers

Was casting this against Elden Beast, and it canceled it’s sword beams.

If you are 80 INT and wearing ranni's hat in conjunction with the other frost spells than this is worth using over Rennala's. BOTH moon spells apply the same magic debuff, it is NOT an instant 30% magic damage reduction it is the exact same as rennala's. What ranni's moon does is apply frost and if you frostbite the enemy they take increased damage from all sources including magic so that is what you see people referencing with 30% increased damage. If you aren't at the hard cap for INT you may be better off using an INT boosting hat if you're looking for more damage and if you aren't going to be using the frost spells to proc frost after opening with Ranni's moon than this is not worth using over Rennala's moon as it actually does less damage without ranni's hat and costs more FP.
Short version:
Use this with frost spells and ranni's hat
Use Rennala's moon if you aren't using ranni's hat and you aren't trying to stack frost
I personally appreciate that both have use cases :)

The distance it travels, its acceleration, and the AoE on landing makes it a fairly decent PvP spell. The Moon can also "block" other spells thrown directly at you after it releases. It's obvious counter is to keep pressure on the mage so they can't safely cast it. However, and my one complaint for its use in PvP, you can absorb the whole thing with Carian Retaliation, which seems pretty ridiculous that for 9 FP on any build, you can instantly negate 68 Int and 2-3 seconds of casting time (which is a lot in a fast paced game like this).
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Please confirm if Carian Regal actually increases the damage.
My damage testing using Astrologer as an alternative shows that Carian Regal only buffs Rennala's, not Ranni's.
Ranni consistently does more damage using Astrologer without Snow Witch, less using Carian Regal without Snow Witch.
Carian Regal + Snow Witch makes Ranni move a little bit ahead of Rennala.
- Anonymous
I killed all 3 turtles and the entrance is still blocked. Anyone else having this problem?
- Anonymous
Fills the frostbite gauge by 100 so if they have more than that you will need to land more frost
- Anonymous
Ranni's dark moon does 10% less than Rennala's. Easy to compare is put on the snow witch hat and take it off
- Anonymous
This is just a slightly different version of Rennala's Full Moon. Tested it and Rennala's consistently does more damage. The only benefit of Ranni's is the frost application but unless you're purposely doing a frost stacking build I don't think it's worth using due to the damage loss and FP cost compared to Rennala's.
- Anonymous
Has the potential for good damage it it procs Frostbite...that said, still far, far lower DPS than pebble. Thanks, Fromsoft.
- Anonymous
Honestly, there was only one fight where I found the ability to cancel out other sorcery's useful and it's the 3rd to last boss fight in the game lol where you fight that NPC sorcerer.
- Anonymous
For anyone struggling with the lack of any kind of poise during the startup cast, you can enchant a right hand weapon with the Endure weapon art(Functions as perserverance in Ds3) and it'll give you infinite(Maybe? I've never been interrupted during poise boost tho) poise for the majority of the cast animation. Super useful for casting ganks, as you can poise through a lot of their casts, then the moon will block the rest. Also makes this a decent spell for close quarters since you get reduced damage taken from endure, and the hosts gank will generally try to stunlock you while you're casting the spell allowing you to drop a massive AoE on them while they're still trying to figure out why you didn't get interrupted.
Also for any sorcerers not running this spell during invasions, start using it. Cast time is long, but I literally had a cast follow a blue around a corner and wipe him and the unexpecting furled finger out in 1 hit. Majority of players in my 110 range get 1shot with this if you run a halfway glass cannon build, and the debuff makes wiping a squad so much easier. My best strategy so far is to get a high vantage point where the host/summons can't see you, pop the infinite FP flask tear, and blast the squad to the moon. Follow up with any spells you want to after casting.
Also I need to test this further, but from what I gather the magic defense debuff still applies even if they roll out of the attack as long as the AoE manages to touch them. Multiple times I've seen phantoms/hosts get the particle effect for the debuff despite the spell not hitting.
- Anonymous
Ive tested on giants at Grand Lift of Dectus and glintstone dragon smarag. This has the same magic res debuff as Rennalas full moon. And debuffs from the moons do not stack. However, they do stack with Knowledge Above All, which also has the same amount of magic res debuff as the moons
- Anonymous
The debuff is the same 10% like Rennala's Full Moon. Use it on enemies that don't get instant frostbite and you will find out.
- Anonymous
Curious about this 30% debuff, is it due to the frost procing and that what causing the 30% over the 10%, or is it really 30% before frost procs
- Anonymous
For those struggling to use the spell when you have the right stats, note that it uses 2 memory slots, so you must have 2 memory slots free or it will be greyed out.

"Legendary sorcery associated with the Carian queen.
Uses the caster as a vessel to incarnate a cold, dark moon, then sends it floating toward foes. The dark moon dispels all sorvery" someone need to correct the typo please XD
After testing both Rennala and Ranni's full and dark moon, i see which spell i'll keep from now on. i do 1300-1500 with Rennala's full moon, Ranni's dark moon does 1300-1900 damage (after applying debuff). I have 98 int.

The second turtle never showed up for me either but when I got back to the tower it was opened so I think it died on its own.

I thought it would be crap in pvp because of cast time and slow projectile being easy to dodge. Boy was i wrong. People eat this thing so much and it does stupid damage. I think people are getting caught rolling by the explosion AOE or maybe the speed makes the dodge time awkward. Love it, great spell. This and adulas moonblade go so well together, buff from snow witch hat, huge aoe, been wiping gankers with those spells the past few nights. So much fun.

i cant use the full moon nor the dark moon i have both and i have enough int
i have them in my inventory but i cant use them at all

"This sorcery reduces a target's magic negation by ~30%, 20% more than Rennala's Full Moon."
You don't subtract percents to find the difference. The correct way to treat this is a difference between 90% (0.9) and 70% (0.7). This makes the difference 22.22% repeating, which means rennala's full moon reduces it by 22.22% less and ranni's is 77.77777777% more. This appears like a lot, but when handling something like a damage increase (like the full hp talisman, which is a 10% increase) that is calculated as 110%, or 1.1.
(1 - 0.7 / 0.9) * 100 = 22.22222.

Don't know if they updated it recently or not. But my turtles didnt reset after I died from falling off a cliff or fast travelling back to the rise. Also one of the turtles are flying in the air like a majestic mofo.

Better than it’s variant despite higher cost due to lower requirement. If you’re doing a 100-120 run this sucker hits perfect for a boss warmup to smite with your Dark Moon Greatsword or Adula’s Moonblade. Both pair greatly with Carian royal sceptre.
I recommend opaline bubble tear with magic damage boosting tear as pre fight buff w/ Dark Moon Greatsword.
- Anonymous
Everybody keeps saying they despawn if you fast travel but I just found the last two turtles in post game after finding the first turtle 40 or so hours earlier and I didn't need to do anything to respawn them. I just went to the locations and they were there. I know I've fast traveled a time or two in 40 hours of game time lol. My guess is that them resetting for people is a common bug OR my turtles not resetting was a rare bug and I just got lucky.

FYI to all:
Ranni's Moon inflicts -30% magic def down debuff, Rennala's moon inflicts -10%.
This spell also counts as both a cold and full moon sorcery, whereas Rennala's only counts as full moon sorcery.

I swear i just kill 1 turtle and the seal was openned is it updated? Or bugged ,I use starscourge GS and talisman that boost roar damage and just roar to kill the first turtle from the closest spot possible is it relevant in anyway?

I've tested Ranni's Dark Moon with a +10 Lusat's staff and 80 INT with no talismans/buffs or Helm.
`Full moon 1607
`Dark moon 1473
-Full moon does about 8.3% more DMG and cost 10FP less compare to Dark moon.
-They BOTH apply reduces magic damage negation debuff which lasts exactly 1MIN on the enemy and make them take +10% more dmg from magic spells.
I also tested it while wearing the snow witch hat which boost cold dmg spells, Dark moon did 1621 DMG thats a +10% increase with that hat. You could be wearing the int hat or something else
and deal more dmg with Full moon.
I guess what Dark moon has over full moon is the cold it applies but it counts on spesific enemies cuz the numbers i got clearly show that Full moon is a better spell and cold didnt show any effect, maybe against fire enemies?
- Anonymous
I don't believe it's a bug. If you fast travel at all after reading the puzzle riddle it'll make any remaining spectral turtles vanish. You have to do all 3 in one go without fast travel.
- Anonymous
I'm seeing a lot of people mention they're unable to see the turtle during this quest.
There are two requirements here, first and foremost, every time to respawn, or fast travel, you have to read from the imp statue again, and you have to be searching at NIGHT, the turtle will not be visible during any other time, so every time, sit at the Grace, wait until Nightfall, then read the Imp statue, this should resolve any issues
- Anonymous
To any that are having issues with the turtles go to the locations they are and it should open the seal it worked for me
- Anonymous
Friendly reminder that if you use the map to teleport after enabling the puzzle, the turtles will despawn.

Why does this page say 62 (25) in reguards to the fp useage. I cant seem to find a way to use this illusive 25 fp version.
- Anonymous
This spell is ridiculous on the Mimic. Normally, if you launch a spell or an attack on an unaware enemy, it will do much more damage than when they are engaged. With this however, after you hit them with the first moon, the debuff is so strong that the next shot does even more damage than the previous one when they were caught off guard.
- Anonymous
If the turtles are not spawning just attack the air, i had the same bug and it worked!
Missing turtle solution;
If the turtle (eastern location, south of Lunar Estate Ruins) is missing, try reloading the area and restarting the game as well. Examine the book again and check if it appears.
If that does not work, ignore the 2nd turtle and move on to the turtle by the spirit springs. I did that after I could not get the eastern turtle to appear and I was able to open the door to the tower without ever having found the eastern turtle.
- Anonymous
Just tried the puzzle and the reloading and resetting the puzzle by reading the book as others have suggested and that has not corrected the issue for me. The tortoises do not appear.
For what it's worth, I'm playing on PC. Maybe the resetting works only on consoles?

The second turtle in all the videos NEVER SHOWED UP AT ALL. Game breaking bug for me as this is the spell I wanted on this character
- Anonymous
The ability seems almost completely functionally the same as rennala's full moon, down to the damage dealt and the magic debuff, Ranni's might apply frost though, making it superior?
- Anonymous
If you fast travel while looking for the three turtles, they can vanish and you'll not be able to see them. If this happens, just quit back to the main menu, continue your game, teleport to the tower, check the sign and the turtles you're missing should now be there.

I plunging attacked the turtle hanging off the cliff next to chelona's rise and I think me dying and killing the turtle softlocked the puzzle cause now the other turtles aren't showing up even if I interact with the book, die, or reload the area. So don;t pluging attack that turtle like I did
best spell in the game. combo it with dark moon greatsword and the physick that gives no FP cost for 15 sec
