Elden Ring Adula's Moonblade Guide

  • Considered a Carian Sword Sorcery and a Cold Sorcery.
    • This means that the damage is boosted by both the Carian Glintstone Staff, as well as the Snow Witch Hat.
  • Stamina Cost: 22
  • Deals magic damage
    • The initial slash inflicts (Sorcery Scaling x 1.33) magic damage before resistances.
    • The projectile inflcits (Sorcery Scaling x 1.89) magic damage before resistances.
  • Inflicts Frostbite
    • The initial slash inflicts 90, while the projectile inflicts 35.
  • I's possible to hit an enemy with both the slash of the blade, as well as the projectile, maximizing damage and frostbite buildup. This only works on the first cast. Subsequent chain casts don't work this way.
  • This sorcery has a chain animation that slightly increases its activation speed for repeated uses.

    • In case you did not notice the buff chart:
although this spell is named Moonblade, it can be counted as Carian sword and be buffed by Carian Glintstone Staff.

Doesn’t do the most damage but always atleast for me takes people off guard think I’m using carian great sword

        • Anonymous

This spell is absolutely broken for fighting npcs, they just try to roll sideways every time and always get caught in the roll. Literally spamming it can beat every npc invader from what I've seen, all the more so when you open with ranni's dark moon

          • Anonymous

I only wished that Fromsoft could've balanced the projectile do more damage vs the blade. Using 26fp to cast Adula's Moonblade only to inflict half of its full damage because you were a hair away from the enemy to your blade is a huge waste of fp. And not to mention Adula's Moonblade is a lot harder to determine how close you are to an enemy because of the visual effects.

this can do serious burst damage if you cast it with lusat staff and cast it offhand since the blade and wave deals both damage. add in flames deadly sin incantation. why? the flames reset frostbite allowing you to deal frostbite again.

this set up shines on larger boss with multiple hit boxes alowing you to hit multiple points in one swing.

              • Anonymous

It's amazing how people are complaining about a bugged interaction being fixed. The first swing of this spell was dealing WAY more damage than was intended. It's still fine to use. If you want the highest DPS you can get, go copy some cookie-cutter build you read about online.

                • For those of you who perhaps haven't played in a while or can't yet acquire and test a spell to see if it's worth a skill slot post nerfs I ran some tests.

At 317 sorcery scaling, without any buffs or anything that would modify this spell's damage it's doing 862 damage on Giants at Warmaster's Shack. The cast time is noticeably quickier than it used to be, making it much easier to get all 3 casts of it on the enemy, which also conveniently usually procs frostbite debuff on most enemies.

You can of course further boost the spells damage by wearing Snow Witch hat, Physick, or just having Carian Glinstone staff equipped for the boost to sword sorceries (Doesn't have to be the staff you cast with, to benefit from the boost), as well as many other damage boosting talismans.

You can draw your own conclusions from this. Overall, I personally think it's still a fantastic spell and worth a slot for hybrids and pure mages alike both for PVE and PVP.

Could somebody check if it wsnt buffed in 1.05? I might be completely wrong, but it seems like i hit people for more damage than before.

After the patch it just changed my way of using it from long range reliable spell to mele roll catcher. Its still a good and fun to use spell, of course not nearly as stron as it used to be but still theres always a palace for it on my sorcerer

So Adula is an example of an intelligent feral dragon, are feral dragons naturally intelligent like their ancient counterparts? Or is it because Adula consumes sorcerers and incorporates their glintstones that it became intelligent?

After loading my old Frost Mage build character, this spell is now certified garbage. Use something else.

In PvP, Adula's Moonblade at melee range can combo into comet if you quickcast (it's not a true combo though).

Can kill most players from full HP if you catch them off guard with it.

I hit guys with beam for 350 dmg 0 stun, while stupid glinstone pebble ash of war does 1,3k dmg with a stun. Whoever was responsible for balancing this game should be fired and never touch any game design and development again.

For mage build, this is great against Malenia, just let black knife tiche aggro her and strike her from the side

Hmm.. I am testing it right now and even casting it in the right hand seems to add both melee + projectile damage. Am I Missing something?

Damage bug (not nerf) is gone PS4 ver. 1.04.1 . Getting consistent damage with melee, and consistent lower damage with projectile only, in either hand. Which hand staff is in does not affect damage. Still switching to carian slicer BTW

                                    • Anonymous

This spell was doing roughly HALF the damage of carian greatsword against Limgrave soldiers. Are you serious, Fromsoft?? Bring the FP cost down!!!

                                      • Anonymous

Lets look at op things pre-patch divided by basic build categories:
                                        ALL BUILDS: bloodhound step
STR: crouching thrust colossal swords spam with thrust counter; flame arc halberds, Fingerprint shield
DEX: godskin sticher; dual cruved swords 4slash attacks; dual katanas
                                        Quality: all above
FTH CASTER: bestial sling, madness true combo
INT CASTER: stars of ruin, adula's moonblade (probably least op out of all the things listed as its slow and telegraphed)
                                        HYBRID BUILDS: moonveil
                                        ARCANE: literally everything
                                        * plus everything that instasleeps (triple shot crossbow, dual trina swords)

Now out of all these things patch nerfed madness true combo and adula's moonblade? Seriously? How about instead of patching things up and creating new problems every patch FromSoftware would for once not rush the game and test it before release? Who tf thought that getting hit by a rapier for 1,8k damage, or getting bled twice from a single dual wielded cruved swords attack was fine? Where's the balance when weapon arts such as flame arc are quick, cover 270 degree, hit for 70% of your health while standard attacks are slower, 5 times weaker and have decent hitboxes...hmm. Some things are now beyond repair, like moonveil cause it borrows animation from another katana weapon art and they cant fix one with ruining another etc etc.

Playing a Faith build right now, after two Sorcery runs, and my +10 Blasphemous Blade's weapon-art can hit upto 3000 damage on enemies with 50 Faith. It's fast and costs only 30 FP. Adula's Moonblade used to hit for only around 1600 damage pre-nerf with 80 Int and +10 Regal staff... but oh no! We can't have that! Sorceries and spells should not do damage! Nerf nerf nerf!

                                          • Anonymous

After nerf the total damage is on the same line with other magic blade spell BUT! with frostbite. Stil the best spell for clear hoard. It's just give us opportunity to use other spell more.

                                            • Anonymous

So I switched back to my int character to test this out after the change and... wow. The faster speed is definitely nice, but the damage was significantly over nerfed.

Either the FP cost needs to come down or some of the damage needs to added back in. I can do similar damage for half the FP with the carian greatsword, and it's probably the weakest overall carian sword spell. The only real advantage is frostbite buildup, but in pve there are better options and in pvp you won't trigger it before the other duelist dies.

I know fromsoft has reverted some bad balance adjustments in the past (DS3's infusion change at the start of Ringed City comes to mind), so there is some hope. Right now it feels like a spell that they forgot to buff in 1.03, so adding a little bit of damage or just a flat fp reduction to go along with less damage would go a long way

This spell is meant to be uses as a singular cast on 90% of enemies in this game when in range of the blade. Simultaneously on hoards and triple on large enemies to proc frost and poise break. It is a combo spell. Golden vowel or commander standard for buff. Jelly fish shield will buff this spell by 20%. Any mage should be using a pulley crossbow with an off hand staff. Ng+ and further should be dual weilding staffs with night comet main sorcery, terra magika, adula, and dark moon with stars of ruin. I've ng7 on my main and beat the game with a base level Astro; as well as ng3 a base level 9 samurai using pulley crossbow, rot bleed antspur paired with frozen needle.

I'm an adula's moonblade user since forever, I kinda miss better damage - the only spell really to compete with other op things in the game and that matters in invasions, but come on, your comments are retarded :D

Explain to me, how this spell "isn't fun" anymore - it hits faster but for less damage. So in your opinion the only fun things in the game are the ones that instakill everything? pff :D Switch to rivers of blood or moonveil. The spell is fun, you're not fun.

                                                  • Anonymous

Does it not cost stamina anymore after the patch? I remember before when chain casting, my stamina always run out before fp. But now my stamina is intact. If it’s true I would consider it a buff.

                                                    • Anonymous

Its still good after the Nerf, one of the best AOE spells with the sword and frostwave, its just got a different role now.

                                                      • Anonymous

I used Carian Greatsword and it's almost identical in damage to Adula's (only slightly less damage) for far less FP. They nerfed it so much that it became very close to a spell that requires about half the FP that the Moonblade requires.

To those who are telling people to stop complaining - people are not complaining it got nerfed, they are complaining that an expensive late game spell it's now almost indistinguishable in damage to a spell that can be acquired early and costs about 50% less FP

                                                        • Anonymous

My favorite spell in the game. Thematically and functionally. I used it in PVP. I hardly hit with it tbh but when I did it felt so good. Now its trash and I’m still getting wombo comboed by like other unaddressed bs that everyone uses.
Who the hell abused this so much that it called for such a nerf?????
Where’s the moonveil and rivers nerf????

Does this spell feel like it doesnt proc frostbite much anymore? I cant even get frostbite off on Beast clergyman after 4-5 casts

                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

int 70, Carian regal scepter +9, Carian glintstone staff on offhand, Ranni hat, graven school+radagon icon talisman, magic shrouding tear+Int knot tear.

The post-nerf evaluation has been controversial.
I think it is influenced by whether or not it was used with the left hand before nerf.
For those who used it with their left hand, the nerf
30% less damage and frost accumulation per hit.
Hits are now 2 or at best 3 hits and no longer 4 hits even on large enemies.
That means it is 60% weaker at 2hit and 90% weaker at 3hit.

These people don't care about the game fun factor or balance. They only care about views, raising a fuss, and clickbaits with "EVERYTHING IS OP! IT'S SO BROKEN!" Videos... The same YouTubers will ditch and leave the game when it gets old and a new game shows up. And will only return if a DLC arrives for more Ridiculous crying OP videos. It's weaker now certainly, especially against smaller and regular enemies. However, it's still a pretty potent spell against bosses and larger minibosses (and also invading NPCs, they are absolutely fodder against this spell and will 95% of the time get hit by the frost projectile if not the blade itself), and the frost arc is still just an exceptional tool for landing hits with range that something like the Carian Greatsword can't- mobile bosses like Malenia are also easily caught by the arc at a safer distance. Earlier, you basically had to use only the first left-handed swing instead of chain casting because of it being bugged and dealing far more damage than it should, now the latter is the way to go- chain casting this on bosses and such is *very good* in terms of damage and for proccing Frostbite.

It's by no means whatsoever "useless" or "ruined", there's a lot of exaggeration here and people react with the same level of indignation and hyperbole every single time anything receives a nerf (Sword of Night and Flame for instance, still a very powerful weapon, it's just not bizarrely overpowered for minimal investment anymore- the first week after the nerf had people going all "useless" just like they are now). It just went from being absolutely busted bonkers to strong.

                                                                            • Anonymous

It is more powerful, both in FP cost and power, to shoot a GLINTSTONE ICECRAG twice than to risk going all the way up close.
It has become a worthless piece of trash.

                                                                              • Anonymous

Stop crying, this spell's still very good. Did i prefer it pre-patch? Yes, but lets be honest - the damage was ridiculous from close range. I instakilled so many people with this. Now after the patch i do like 600-800 dmg on people with 60 int, carian glinstone staff and no boost from talismans from close range which is still a lot and can only imagine what people 80 int+boosts can do.

                                                                                • Anonymous

The toxic PVP crowd ruined one good frost spell . Earlier it would take 1 to 2 cast to frostbite every enemy now it takes way longer . I tested it on Dragon Greyll . It took 5 casts to frost bite (I was hitting the head with the blade and projectile) . It took about 9 hits to stagger . It does about 80 damage more than Carian Greatsword which cost 10 FP less (I accidently killed Greyll so could test stagger but carian greatsword seemed to stagger quickly) . Only reason you might want to use this is because of projectile . Since most enemies are n't going to standing still for even a couple of sec good luck inflicting frostbite . You can still make this work but Carian Greatsword is simply better. From should have buffed the damage considerably if they are going to weaken frostbite of this weapon.

Seriously how many people even play PVP ? Maybe at most 5 % of total players . Then why should a primarily PVE game be balanced around PVP . I swear these guys are going to get both frostbite , bleed and any other fun PVE build nerfed to oblivion because it is too powerful in PVP .

                                                                                  • Anonymous

I get it, from close range it was oneshooting people, but why beam is nerfed too? It was fine as it was. Meanwhile moonveil is twice as fast and hits 3 times harder, greatshields can tank collossal weapons strike damage attacks while constantly poking with rapier at the same time, bestial sling cost nothing, stuns and shoots in almost 180 degree, almost all buffs are insanely overpowered, sleep is op as hell cause not only you cant defend but you get extra damage while asleep, thrust counter makes no sense when these weapons outpoise other weapons anyway.... All other things in this patch were cool as far as I know, but this change is "questionable"... And I liked slow 2nd swing more, cause it worked better with another spells followup....

                                                                                    • Anonymous

Carian Greatsword does virtually the same damage when I use it (maybe 20 less damage) and uses approximately 50% less FP and seems to inflict more stagger damage. The frost damage that Adula's Moonblade does seems to be pretty low to justify using it, and requires many hits before it procs. Hoarfrost Stomp does much more frost damage for much less FP

                                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                                          • Anonymous

The fp cost of that spell is almost half of this, while doing only about 100 less damage. The only reason to really run this is for the beam, which may catch far away opponents if you whiff.

                                                                                            • They Ruined the last remaining fun, cool and good Frost Spell in the game (aside from Ranni Dark Moon)...

It was a fun spell and good natural more expensive upgrade to Carian Greatsword. It's a special reward spell that's hidden out of reach, locked behind a very long unique Challenging Questline! Hidden away passed several tough & huge areas, Ruins, Nox, Lake of Rot, not to mention several bosses and mini bosses like: Astel Boss! And located on top and secret Mountaintop Plateau - where you have to defeat Adula the Great Ancient Glintstone Dragon : probably the strongest Dragon in the game especially for Mages and INT Builds. You finally get this wonderful Spell as worthy proper reward for all your effort...only to be nerfed making Frost Sorcerers lose their fun and prowess.
Just because it can one or two shot some reckless people in Optional PVP doesn't mean it deserves a brutal 40% and 20% Nerf.

                                                                                              • They utterly Butchered it! Nerfed it to the ground and oblivion.

                                                                                                • In my opinion this is a big PvP nerf and an okay PvE nerf. I did some testing and sourced the info from Reddit/Twitter. The buff is that your chaincasts can now doublehit. The nerf is everything else. Frost buildup got nerfed so you'll generally need an extra hit to proc frostbite (the frostbite proc animation also got nerfed). The first sword hit lost it's bonus damage and now does 40% less damage versus 1.0.3 and the second cast does the same damage. The projectile does about 20% damage less, but now hits on chaincasts. In theory, if you just chaincast spammed you'd do about the same damage (5-10% difference) pre-nerf due to lack of doublehit. However, often times you'll cast once, dodge and then cast again meaning you now do roughly 30-40% less damage since you don't get the first hit bonus and the projectile does less damage. In PvP you often can't chaincast which is why I think it's a much bigger PvP nerf than PvE.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

Jokes aside, a 46%nerf to the blade and 20%nerf to the projectile. A bit too much don't you agree?(Why do i get this feeling FS is in constant fear that if they don't nerf the good ones we will never try the ones they buffed.)

                                                                                                      • The projectile is currently bugged. They extended the range at which the projectile can deal damage from .2 to .3 units. That means the majority of the time you'll be only doing either the sword damage or projectile damage unless the enemy is long enough. You can test this out by going to the Liurnia and finding the lobsters near Prawn Shack. They are long enough that your projectile and your sword will consistently trigger doing the proper amount of damage. You can also test this at the trolls by targeting the legs (sword only) and then the chest (sword + projectile), but it's less consistent. Until this bug is fixed your Adula's does 40% less damage than it's supposed to and is equivalent to a Carian Greatsword that shoots ice.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

Once again FS overnerfs something to the point where it breaks the morale of the player. Don't even want to use this anymore tbh. It's dead boys. No fun allowed. Rest in Pepperoni.

It's an excellent option vs Fingerprint Stone Shield users in PvP.

So I grinded to get my snow witch character this thing at level 30. Snow hat + boosting staff + 32 int = dead avatars in 3-4 casts, with frostbite proc'd on the first cast! This thing is so fun to use and feels like an actually appropriate reward for the grind you go through to get it. Haven't tried it in pvp yet, but it's making my Adula cosplay insanely fun in pve so far =)

                                                                                                                        • Really, what makes this spell so good in comparison with the rest of sword sorceries is the range and hitbox. This may sound weird, but here's why:
The "extra" range thanks to the projectile sets it apart from its Carian peers, even if it didn't have frosbite. This and Gintstone Icecrag have about the same range, which is quite significant since it means you can apply frostbite from range without relying on consumables or arrows/bolts. Unlike Glintstone Icecrag however, you also get the benefit of a huge AoE sweep attack both at melee and range, making it insanely good against crowds.
And then as icing (heh) on the cake, both the blade and projectile can hit multiple times on enemies with a wide/big hitbox. Which means it is ALSO great against though enemies and bosses. And for the cherry on top? Each hit from the spell applies frostbite buildup, making subsequent casts even more powerful.
Only "downside" is the FP Cost and the Int requierement, but considering the point at which you get it, it's not a real issue. And there's a lot of options to mitigate it.

                                                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                                                            • Anonymous

I think this spell functions like the OG Moonlight greatsword from bloodborne in which if you hit an enemy with the sweet spot (both the blade and beam hitting) you do massive damage this makes it not only one of the best spells in the game but also makes the dark moon greatsword look like a cuck weapon (which is awesome cuz #notmymoonlightgreatsword)

                                                                                                                                    • This is hands down the best spell in the entire game. Relatively low cost, insanely good damage for what it is and not too easy to get. I noticed several times that this thing hit more than twice. Only on big boy enemies tho. The projectile seems capable of hitting multiple times if your enemy is big enough. Makes this spell even more useful.

                                                                                                                                      • Anonymous

Adula Moonblade is extremely valuable in later game cycle. At that point, you have no chance to mess up, 2 hit and you die. You need something hit hard and fast and Adula does exactly that. At 80 int, both Adula and the bugged Carian Retaliation deal very similar damage, let that sinks in for a moment. The optimal set up for me is Adula left hand and katana/Rapier with bloodhound step right hand. You can dodge and hit Adula once. Nearly foolproof.

                                                                                                                                        • Anonymous

The fact you can't jump over this is seriously messing with me. I see big horizontal attack and my monkey brain thinks I can jump over it and punish, not expecting the surprisingly good tracking on it.

                                                                                                                                          • Anonymous

It can hit 3 times on large enemies which will immediately proc the frost on top of that. I've had it hit for 4.3k multiple times. Combine with sorcery damage talismans, lusat staff, and snow witch hat.

                                                                                                                                            • Anonymous

If you're not opposed to using Spirit Ashes, it's fairly easy to get her in a bit of a lock between yourself and your ash if you pace yourself. It's also fantastic for general Frostbite application or using as the greatsword version of Carian Slicer.

So if you've been using this right-handed you've been doing about 60% of the damage you could have been doing...
