PassiveShort Spear is a Spear in Elden Ring. The Short Spear scales primarily with Strength and Dexterity and is a good Weapon for short range melee combat.
An exceedingly plain spear of modest weight.
Simple to wield compared to many of its peers, its strong attack unleashes a series of successive piercing thrusts.
Where to Find Short Spear in Elden Ring
The Short Spear weapon can be found at the following location:
- Starting Equipment for the Prophet Class.
- Can be purchased from Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold for
600 Runes. - Drops from Godrick, Radahn, and Leyndell Foot Soldiers.
- An easy way to farm them is to start from Agheel Lake North's site of grace, follow the path that goes southeast towards the bridge next to the lake. After the bridge, turn left and continue on the path that branches north, and you'll quickly run into two Godrick Foot Soldiers with Short Spears (only the spear ones can drop it). They're slowly patrolling, so if you take very long to get there, you might not find them at their initial location, resting at a site of grace resets their location.

I was more reliably able to farm the enemies mentioned in this article by starting from the Waypoint Ruins Grace - You aggro less enemies on the way including one less Mounted Kaiden Sellsword

Works really well as a pair, for that powerstance spear moveset which is already good. I use these with Cold infusions, because the frostbite stagger gives a nice opening for the unique charged R2s which kills most stuff straight away. On the offhand I like using the Ice Spear AoW because it's like a "sidearm" that I can switch to get some hits in from range. It's a really strong combo.

Very fun on a bleed build. I rely mostly on the repeating heavy attacks, quickstep, and the petal whip in off hand for fast-paced aggressive combat that procs quickly. Came about as my attempt at a retiarius gladiator

Running an arcane build and found Spectral Throw at the academy. This thing is amazing fun with it. Light, good move set, and the throw from the AoW breaks stances like nobody's business.

The two and then three stab combo for the heavy attacks means you can use this to apply status effects so damn easily. If you want to go harder, use the two stab heavy, and follow it up with a 'Repeating Thrust' ash of war attack for an additional four, all in a very short space of time. Builds bleed really quickly using this method, for very low FP cost.

I can't express the delight I felt when I started my very first playthrough as a prophet and saw that charged r2 for the first time. The Demon's Souls spear followup r2 is finally back. :) I still miss the bouncy crowhop, though...

One of my builds power stances two of these. Black flame tornado on one, flaming strike on the other. No fun for invaders. Laid Malenia and all endgame bosses with them. I like how starter weapons stay relevant in souls games

Until today I was using Lordsworn Straight Swords as my standard starter weapon. I only just tried starting as a Prophet and using this weapon and I'm frankly amazed at how good it is. The default R2 is a surprisingly good poise-breaker. Managed to stun-lock the Limgrave Tree Sentinel to death... and it works pretty well against Rune Bears too, which have always given me trouble before.

There's a soldier that has this just around the corner of the Stake of Marika at Fort Gael (guarding the ladder to get up to the wall), so if you kill him, and then jump off the cliff to die, you can respawn and try again. Pretty quick!

There is also two foot soldiers carrying this spear by the Road of Iniquity Side Path SOG, head towards the big caravan thing with great stars. It's by far a lot speedier than what's suggested above

Lots of talk on this page of the short spear being a "perfect sidearm" for X build. Wrong! (Well, right. But misleading!) It may look cute, but it's got the tools to take you from the first step all the way to NG+. Okay, so it's only got a few good infusion options (heavy, keen, cold.) And it's a bit stubby for a spear. And its thrust-only moveset is limited. But aside from all that! Each R2 poke (not even a fully charged one, mind you) procs Millicent's/Winged Sword/Thorny Tear once. It benefits from the spear talisman, so that's even more bonus damage. You can run broken ashes on it like Ice Spear (try cold infusion for that one) or Giant Hunt, and excellent workhorse ashes in Impaling Thrust and Piercing Fang. The short spear is so good, I would recommend building around it and investing in a side weapon to support it, not the other way 'round. Maybe something with strike damage.

I have made...way too many builds on this game. And as such, I've used a whole host of weapons. I have to admit, I'm not a huge fan of using the widely known strong ones (call me a contrarian, I probably fit the bill more than I'd admit), but there's some weapons that are so below what I consider good I don't even look at them.
This is most certainly not one of those. I've used nearly all the other Spears, and I have to say I've found a new favourite. Is it the strongest? Well, no, but I don't think anyone would be surprised by that assessment. What it is is the master of utility. So many builds at so many levels benefit from a Spear with this weight and this moveset. The double poke heavies and the capacity to assign an Ash of War makes it one of the versatile weapons in the game.
Ten out of ten, would jab their nards again and again.

Currently doing a naked run with this sweet little baby. Blue Dancer Charm, Millicent Prosthesis, Winged Sword Insignia, Lord of Blood's Exultation. Put Repeating Thrust on this baby and let her rip. You can do an uncharged R2 which strikes twice pretty quickly, and almost immediately follow-up with Repeating Thrust, striking 6 times in somewhere around 3 seconds. Some of the fastest bleed build-up in the game, and once all talismans are proccing, the raw damage is nothing to thumb your nose at either.
Is it meta? No. But its ****ing good, its different, and its fun dancing around with light rolls looking for an opening to punish the **** out of any enemy that bleeds.

For the same reason that e.g. Glintstone Stars (and similar spells) is said (by this wiki) to do much better in late game than early game because of how defenses work, I am moderately sure (haven't tested) that this weapon's R2's damage improves rapidly as you increase your AR. I just did some other tests and noticed that the game reduces an 88 damage attack by 59, a 153 damage attack by 65, and a 239 damage attack by 76, so there's a sort of semi-flat reduction that scales up very slowly as your attacks get stronger, leading to individually strong attacks being best early on but multi-hit attacks catching up later as their individual hit values get better.

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite weapons. I'd thought I'd trade up to something more traditional or exotic or something. But, no, my guy is crushing (impaling more like) with this simple weapon. A well-timed impaling thrust just tears through the bad guys.

Ok, so I have been playing around with the short spear for the past few days, and I think I finally have it pegged at what niche it fills. On paper, it's the most vanilla of the spears (and rightfully so), but it does fulfill some very interesting synergies provided you build for it correctly. Let's go with the obvious: it's one of the few weapons that actually can use the blue dancer charm and benefit from it. Assuming your character is completely naked, you can stack up: winged sword insignia, blue dancer charm, spear talisman, and even radagon's soreseal and that would put you at 7.6 equipment load, right under the first softcap for the BDC. That's a very solid loadout on it's own, and although this would mean you would be naked, would have great use for SL1 runs to maximize damage.
The other fact, as alluded above, is that the requirements are SL1 friendly. it only requires 10/10. easy peasy. it's also a spear, so it has all the perks that comes with. The shortspear does lack a normal sweep like the partisan, but this can be alleviated fairly easy by kitting it with an AoW that is either A) a sweep or B) some form of other crowd control, like a spin.
Not the best for damage. There are stronger options out there but the scaling is pretty nice. All of that is just one example. In short, it's a good weapon, with unique circumstances to allow it to shine. don't pass up on it.

Nice little side arm if you’re a pure faith mage and not investing into strength or dex at all. Good at chasing down people before they flask, and can be used as a “get off my nuts” button when you’re getting ganked because you put black flame tornado on it, and at 70+ faith no one I’ve faced has been able to survive that ash of war if it hits

They really want you to use this spear. Most of the other spears are pretty hard to obtain early on, while you can get this spear from nearly anywhere in Limgrave or buy it at the Roundtable Hold merchant, assuming you don't start with prophet.

The damage is a problem, but oh i love this spear in PvE. The double-poking R2 is fun and satisfying, and if you have time to charge the second R2 it triple-pokes instead. Definitely strongest on a bleed infusion. I won a lot of Radabeast coop using this with blackflame tornado, haligtree crest greatshield, lion greatbow, and the deathbed dress for fashion / minor ally regen.

I'd say fastest farm for these would be starting from the Waypoint Ruins Cellar (where you probably first met Sellen) and heading straight NW from there until you reach the road that takes you down into the Mistwood. You'll encounter the mob pack with 2 Short Spear wielders a little ways down that road. From mounting to teleporting back to the grace, it took me 36ish seconds to get there, kill the mob pack, and collect loot.

The footsoldiers who wield this weapon have a chance to drop it. Agheel lake north's sight of grace is probably the closest one to a group of godrick footmen with the short spear near the bridge. Its not too crazy of a drop chance so getting one this way isnt too hard.

R2 has an interaction with winged sword insigna (and the other talismans working the same way), each r2 procs one stage of the talisman if you hit both hits of the heavy attack.
with both talismans, you can hit pretty decently with it.
The attacks are pretty fast compared to some weapons, and even if the range is short for a spear, it's still better than most weapon classes.
the r2 can't be used while shield blocking, but well, if you want to shield poke there is better options

The Short Spear can drop from Foot Soldiers wielding them. There’s two Short Spear-wielding Foot Soldiers in Limgrave on the east side of the bridge where the Night Cavalry spawns (the bridge is south-east of the Gatefront Ruins).

Not exactly primary weapon material, but not without its merits. It has good reach and speed with extremely lax requirements to use and very low weight. If you’re the sort to keep a couple main-hand weapons, this with the Spectral Javelin skill makes an excellent sidearm to something slower and/or shorter, such as daggers or warhammers.

Short Spear is dropped from the soldiers, defending the northern outer gate of Lyndell (got one when I tried to take revenge on the Trebuchet crews and the surrounding soldiers :) )
Short Spear can also be dropped by the guys in yellow near volcano manor.

Surprisingly handy little spear. Light, low requirements, and a unique thrust-combo heavy attack.
Short spear isn't much weight so a good weapon to have Spectral Lance on. Spectral Lance is one of the best ashes in the game for enemies with heads that you can crit on like Godskin duo, Astel, etc. It's that perfect medium damage range weapon.

Underrated weapon. There are definitely better choices but it is what it is -- it's still a spear, so it has more range than a straight sword but not much, and you get counter damage. The real value is low weight and stat requirements but respectable damage. Charged r2s are very fun too.

The only thing this spear is good at is being the lowest weight requirement for black flame tornado. Other than that, it's garbage.
