Partisan is a Spear in Elden Ring. The Partisan scales primarily with Dexterity and Strength and is a good Weapon for making further melee attacks with its length and ability to sweep and thrust through enemies within range.

Spear with a wide tip.

In addition to its thrusting attacks, this highly versatile weapon can be swung to sweep through foes.

Moveset & Videos in Elden Ring for Partisan

  • Utility:
    • One-handed and two-handed R1s are thrust attacks.
    • One-handed and two-handed R2s are slash attacks.
    • Jumping R1s are thrusts.
    • Jumping R2s are small AOE slams.
  • Strategy:
    • R1s are spammable and quick. They have good range as well.
    • The jumping R1 attack is very fast, has good range, and a lingering hitbox. It is very useful against bosses!
    • Impaling Thrust is a great skill, but an alternative strategy would be to use the War Cry ability (especially on a strength build) because it gives a small attack power buff, and it turns the charged R2 attack into a small charging thrust attack

Partisan Poison Upgrades

Requires regular reinforcement with Smithing Stone [1]Smithing Stone [2]Smithing Stone [3]Smithing Stone [4]Smithing Stone [5]Smithing Stone [6]Smithing Stone [7]Smithing Stone [8], and Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone, as well as Poison Affinity Ashes of War.

Elden Ring display values for poison and blood include buildup added by scaling via the Arcane Stat. The values on this table reflect the default values only. Your own Arcane Scaling will alter the number while inside the game. If you don't meet the arcane requirements for an arcane-scaling passive then buildup will show as 60% of the base values.

This upgrade cannot be enchanted with Magic or boosted with Consumables.

cuckoo knight cosplay needs 5 of these. One with repeating thrust, one with impaling thrust, one with glintblade phalanx, one with charge forth, and one with glintstone pebble.

i use this on my Chinese build to roleplay as a Chinese person. the Chinese spears have tassels on them like this weapon so it was probably designed to be wielded by an ethnically Chinese person. this may suggest the knights are ethnically Chinese in the game lore

Heavy +25 reaches a nice round 500 damage at exactly 51 STR, one-handed.
Keen needs 58 DEX to reach 501.

There is a reason why this is the spear of choice of the various Greatshield Knights across the Lands Between.

The Lordsworn Straight sword or Claymore of spear family, moveset versatility, AoW flexibility, coolness, low stat req.
Biggest downside is quite hard to get, if godrick knight is unhappy with you

The 55k Zeuse build is probably one of my favorites for taking out large mobs quickly with plenty of stackable AOE damage

I think i had a dedicated Partizan playthrough in every game since Dark Souls 2. I love spears, but i love spears that can swing even more. The importance of R2 utility sideswings cannot be understated as it solves 2 of spears' most common problems: performance against pierce-resistant targets (commonly: skeletons) and lack of crowd control. This thing to Spears is what Longsword is to Straight Swords,
And now... Not only does it features a vastly improved fashion, but you can customise the special attacks to your liking too: double down on swingin' with Sword Dance or compensate lack of piercing heavies with Impaling Thrust. Glorious weapon, definetely gonna have a themed playthrough at some point (again).

Pros: one of the best looking spears in the game, especially if you're rocking armor that is gold colored (looking at you, tree sentinel set). Also the only spear that doesn't technically transform with spectral lance.

Cons: pretty much outclassed in every way by the cross-naginata.

                  • Anonymous

One of the most fun spears to use, and the impaling thrust AoW that comes with it compliments it exceptionally well. It can easily carry you through an entire playthrough, and it even looks better than ever in terms of appearance.

Dropped 2 of these at the beggining of the game and decided to powerstance. Decent moveset, good damage, but after 2x r1 you are out of stamina and you have to invest a little bit into END. Also the best looking spear in game. Looks super cool when you are on torrent and have one in hand and one at the back. Just kinda wondering what to wear (drip wise) to look even cooler.

                        My thoughts on this weapon:
Great damage variety, Slash and Pierce counter pretty much opposite types of enemies
Extremely easy to get and you probably already have 3 or 4 in your chest somewhere
Pretty above-average STR and Cold scaling
Strong poise damage and crowd-clearing CR2's
High base damage for a spear, but also short range and no status buildup

Absolutely worth a shot, especially with a Greatshield or an offhand weapon buff.

the godrick knight at gatefront ruins and redmane knight at fort gael have the same drop rate, so just farm it @ the agheel lake north grace

                            Good points about Partizan:

                            - Can poke (HMMMMM...)
                            - Can swipe, dealing Regular Damage.
                            - Is not super long, but definitely one of the longest spears (HMMMMMM...)
                            - Is very easy to farm, since a lot of fully armored knights with great shields use it.
                            - Can infuse and put affinities of your liking.
                            - Pairs well with Naginata, since you can put this on Bleed and Poison Naginata to deal extreme bleeding while poisoning.
                            - Is the weapon where "Spectral Spear" skill uses, so it's a mascot girl.
                            - Is light.
                            - Is very reliable when Shield Poking.

                            Bad points about Partizan:

                            - It's not the longest spear.
                            - Is not the lightest spear.
                            - Is not the most powerful spear.
                            - You need a little bit of patience until getting it.

In conclusion: Well worthy a try.

Finally a weapon that looks like a weapon! Honestly, I'm a little tired of those colorful **** typical of Japan and its disgusting children's anime. I leave those to the beautiful twelve-year-old fairies who like all the colored lights and magical flames

Partisan Autist here, I was wrong when I wrote my thesis seen below because I hadn't taken into account one very important thing: RL1 builds.

Though you CAN build for the Naginata with Level 1 runs, the Partisan's incredibly low stat requirements mean you only need either Radagon's soreseal or the dex heirloom when wielding with two hands to wield this, infinitely more generous than the naginata's awkward 16str 20dex requirements that you won't be able to meet until at least Margit. Couple this with its ability to meet important thresholds with the blue dancer's charm and the partisan actually has a niche in something it does better than the naginata. Where the bleedstick has damage, the partisan has build versatility at level 1 and that versatility in extra talisman or headgear slots is crucial to your success in an RL1 run. To anybody trying to beat the game at level 1, I can't recommend the partisan enough, there's even good reason to wield it over the Naginata! I know this won't be a problem for everybody, but it's nice to have a scenario where I feel like I'm not kneecapping myself by using not the meta spear. Partisan, I'm sorry I ever doubted you, you're the GOAT.

At this point in kind of sick of reading all your debate about the partisan.

TLDR: Probably time to end the partisan bickering

One of the oldest weapons in Miyazaki's games. Been there when some poor, unfortunate soul needed it since Dark Souls 1. It even kind of appeared in Bloodborne as the rifle spear which can poke or slash in its transformed mode. This bad boy has seen it all over the past 13 years, legendary weapon imo. Up there with the all time greats like the claymore and zweihander. It may not be as popular, but it's a legend to me. In Elden Ring, it's not as good as it's predecessors, but it's prettier than ever and can see you through all the horrors spawned from Miyazaki's mind without fail.

In my opinion the partisan with spectral lance was the weapon of gelmir knights, why? My points:
                                      - The partisan is used all throughout the lands between by knights, the partisan's color schemes specifically perfectly match with gelmir knights' armor
                                      - the serpent hunter, which is used to kill the serpent god (I'm unsure about this but i think they're an outer god? Also i said "kill", in reality he can't be slain, he'll return eventually) uses the same magic as the spectral lance, same visual effects, the reason why the serpent hunter doesn't scale with arcane is imo because of the fact that there's already a strength arcane greatspear, they wanted to have a pure strength option fr gameplay purposes

                                        I compared Partisan (P) vs. Clayman's Harpoon (CH) for a cold-infusion build!
Both scale strength well up to 80, intelligence caps hard at 50 and dexterity goes well with P but very poorly with CH.

                                        A snapshot with 140 points spent -> P: str50/dex40/int50=616ar, CH: str80/dex10/int50=640ar
Looks favorable for CH but wait! Partisan has advantages: 1) more range 2) better R2 3) better fashion. Furthermore the physical defense of strength caps at 60 and dex improves cast speed for the intelligence investment.
P and CH are pretty equal considering these details.

                                        180 points spent on a snapshot with str80/dex50/int50 -> P: 662ar, CH: 662ar
Now their damage is the same! But P still scales dex >50 whereas CH is at its bitter end.

For NG+ and level >250 Partisan is clearly the better choice.
For early and mid game Clayman's Harpoon does more damage.
For late game around level ~200... it's really personal taste.

                                          Some Partisan advantages over Naginata,
                                          - All R1 does pierce damage, while Naginata does slash>pierce>slash>pierce. this makes Partisan better at utilize Spear talisman.
                                          - Somewhat lesser stamina cost, Partisan R1=17 per swing, Naginata R1=18 per swing.
                                          - Less weight than Naginata.
                                          - Requires less dex at 12 vs 20 on Naginata.

Other than these, Naginata seems to win on range, pure damage and better scaling.

An effective way to farm at the beginning is to rest at the Agheel site of grace just outside of the gatefront ruins. Use a bow or crossbow to agro the godrick knight to pull him away from the godrick soldiers and then you'll only have to fight him on your own.

For the same stat investment the partisan performs a tiny bit better on a heavy infusion than on a keen one (about 10 points on a 60/15 stat split and vice-versa)

Early game faith builds generally suffer from lack of crowd control and a way of dealing with blocking enemies. Partisan with its heavy sweep and with impaling thrust covers these weaknesses effectively.

The Naginata may be better, but that's ignoring one fact: powerstancing two spears is REALLY good and there's only one naginata. Dual wield this and the Naginata and you don't have to choose between the cringe meta bleedspear and the objectively cooler one, you can have both.

It's a real shame the Cross-Naginata is as broken as it is, this weapon would be ridiculous if it weren't for that weapon. Let's do some pro/con comparison real quick:

                                                            Method of Obtaining:
The Cross-Naginata can obtained immediately while the Partisan requires grinding. Already this puts the Partisan in a bad spot because getting it could take anywhere from five minutes to five hours, which is an awful experience when just trying to get the weapon. Sure, you can grind for it relatively early, but guaranteed locations without beating any bosses is a really hard deal to pass up instead of grinding for a widely varying amount of hours.

                                                            Stat Requirements:
The Partisan requires significantly less stats to wield at 15str/12dex as opposed to the Cross-Naginata's 16str/20dex, which allows one to wield the Partisan at level 7 with Wretch as opposed to level 16 with Wretch. This gap is not incredibly large and could be argued that it doesn't really matter, but this advantage should still be noted.

                                                            Weight:
At 6.5 wgt, the Partisan is lighter than the Cross-Naginata by around 1.5 wgt points. This, admittedly, isn't a whole lot, but when building a spear build around Light Rolling without Physick, this difference can be significant, so it should also be noted.

                                                            Moveset:
The Partisan DOES have a moveset unique to itself: with a sweeping slash as part of its heavy attack, it's particularly effective at crowd control with weaker enemies and I'd argue more effective than the Naginata, but this makes less of a difference when fighting bosses unless the bosses have summons, which is (fortunately for the players but unfortunately for the Partisan) not many mandatory bosses.

                                                            Keen Weapon Affinity:
This right here drives me up the wall. With the Naginata having an A in dex scaling compared to the Partisan's humbler B in dex scaling with the Keen affinity, the Naginata immediately becomes objectively the best choice for dex builds and COMPLETELY eclipses the damage of the Partisan when dealing with higher levels of dex. This alone would be insanely obnoxious, but it gets worse when we get to the next point:

                                                            Status Effect Buildup:
And here, the Naginata's advantage becomes painfully obvious: the Naginata has Bleed Buildup built into the weapon and the Partisan does not. Even if the Partisan had a higher DPS than the Naginata with the Keen affinity, this by itself would still make the Naginata competative with the Partisan in dex builds. The fact that the Naginata has better Dex scaling than the partisan overwhelms the Partisan's potential performance and takes over any potential it has for being an effective strategy in comparison. With both this and the previous factor, the Partisan's stats would pale enough in comparison, but as the cherry on top:

                                                            Range:
Not only does the Naginata have better range than the Partisan, it has SIGNIFICANTLY more range than the Partisan, which is even more polarizing in weapon choice because of the potential for shield pokes and guard counters. Range makes or breaks a spear and the fact that the Naginata has better range than the Partisan is the final nail in the coffin for the Partisan when it comes to dex builds.

Another commenter below pointed out that the Partisan had slightly better performance than the Naginata when it came to the bleed affinity, but there's no point in running the bleed affinity when the Naginata has innate bleed buildup and can do the job of a bleed affinity without requiring the actual affinity. It's a shame, too, because this is such an incredibly cool weapon, but when compared to such an insanely powerful Jack-of-all-trades, Master-of-all weapon like the Cross-Naginata, simply put: there's no reason to bother. I'd love to advocate for this weapon, but I can't in good faith when such a blatantly better option exists in another weapon.

TL;DR: The Partisan is really good if you want better Crowd Control against weaker enemies, are an arcane/dex build with mostly arcane and want to use a bleed spear, have a VERY particular lightroll build that you want to preserve or some combination of the three of those.

Otherwise, just use the Naginata. Sorry, Partisan.

                                                            • Anonymous

Weirdly enough, this weapon just barely has the highest physical damage out of all spears. A handful of spears have higher total damage, but they either spread their damage across two damage types or don't allow you to infuse the weapon, giving this spear the highest physical damage stat at 123 physical damage, just one point ahead of the cross-naginata at 122.

Unfortunately for the Partisan, however, the Cross-Naginata both has a fair amount more range and innate blood loss buildup, giving the Naginata the edge in the end. The one scenario in which the Partisan technically performs better than the Naginata is when infusing both weapons with blood affinities, which puts the Partisan at just barely more damage than the Naginata, one point more from +1-12 and two points more from +13-25. It's an incredibly small difference and one could argue that the better range of the Naginata is worth losing out on that admittedly very small damage difference, but if you want the absolute most amount of physical damage for an arcane bleed spear build, the Partisan just barely wins out over all the rest of the spears.

Fantastic weapon for a few reasons, not only because it lends itself to both dex and strength builds really well and has great variety in Ashes of War, but also because grinding this early on in the game is an excellent way to learn how to parry.

You will need a shield with 100% physical negation, I recommend the Inverted Hawk Heater Shield because you can get it immediately for free. From the Agheel Lake North Grace, run towards the gatefront ruins and try to only attract aggro from the Knight walking up and down, though if you provoke the spear footsoldier with the shield, that's fine because he has a smaller aggro range than the knight's. Once the knight's within range of you, attack his shield to trigger him doing a guard counter. The counter doesn't instakill you and there's a grace nearby so you can safely practice parrying him. Should you successfully parry him, you'll be rewarded with a critical hit and an easier kill on him! Practice parrying him like this until you get the Partisan and be rewarded with a really cool spear!

                                                                • Anonymous

Don't let these conments fool you: this weapon is an insanely satisfying one to use, especially with a shield. Would highly recommend running early game, I've got spectral lance on mine for both better range and poise damage and it's been insanely fun. Sure, you could run the cross naginata like every other weeb online, but why would you do that when you can play with a spear that looks this sick?

                                                                  • Anonymous

I got three of these things in under 45 minutes with less than 20 arcane just because I was having fun fighting the knight. I don't know why people are saying this is so rare, I've gotten it like seven times between all of my playthroughs. Try and get a cleanrot spear. Then we'll talk.

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

It's a beautiful weapon, but let's be brutally honest for a moment: the shortcomings of Partisan become obvious and problematic as game progresses. The below-average range is fine, can be worked around. The low poise damage, typical of single spears, is a very noticeable downside as enemies get tougher and meaner. But the biggest issue is the damage.

Let's compare three weapons: Partisan, Banished Knight Halberd, and Guardian Swordspear. I am aware they are different weapon classes, but they play very similar and fill similar roles. +22, str 17 dex 43, Partisan has total AR of 427, Halberd has 490, Swordspear has 579. Both halberd and swordspear have higher stamina damage (due to being from heavier weapon class), swordspear has same speed, halberd has superior range. Due to how damage reduction and resistance works, Partisan quickly falls short. Tested on Shaded castle rotten hollows, and perfumer, using 2h R1 (no counter damage), keen infusion:

                                                                        Partisan: hollow 494, perfumer 353

                                                                        Halberd: hollow 585, perfumer 420

Swordspear (standard): hollow 712, perfumer 509

At higher dexterity levels these differences become even more pronounced, as partisans poor scaling makes the difference between weapons grow further, as much as 200 ar between partisan and swordspear at 80 dex.

Lightning infusion 2h R1 (no counter damage):

                                                                        Partisan: hollow 535, perfumer 343

                                                                        Halberd: hollow 625, perfumer 400

                                                                        Swordspear: hollow 663, perfumer 425

The differences in scaling are much smaller here, up to 130 at 80 dex.

I WANT to like partisan, but I find it hard to justify using when it simply makes both pve and pvp feel worse, with no tradeoff. In DS3 pvp it was a beast because of combos and pseudocombos, but in Elden Ring and its gimmicky pvp scene, aside from very situational R1-R2, Partisan doesn't have almost anything going for it.

                                                                        • Started new wretch run and just gonna use whatever i find. Immediately get this + the greatshield from the first godrick knight. I wasn't even gonna farm it, just wanted souls. Guess I've used all my luck this run already lol.

                                                                          • Anonymous

It's a halberd you can poke from behind a shield, only weighs 6.5 and has 36 guard boost which is on the high end for spears.

Using shield poke uses the weapons guard boost to determine how much stamina is lost rather than the blocking instrument. Use greatshield tali to boost this and you can slot anything in your left hand that can block to shield poke with great effect. Something Something steelwire torch...

                                                                            • Anonymous

This weapon with an alternating kit of only impaling thrust, piercing fang, sword dance, repeating thrust and war cry is the most balanced fun I’ve had this game.

None of the AOW are close to either broken (like blasphemous blade, rivers of blood) or so good you keep spamming them (like giant hunt, square off or unsheathe). Just solid situational ashes to switch up during combat.

No blood to emphasise melee gameplay. Sword dance to deal with mobs, impaling thrust for slower enemies to get staggers off fast, piercing fang where closing distance is needed constantly and war cry when the enemy has a long delay after an attack to exploit for damage.

All in all a very old school souls type of fun.

                                                                              • Anonymous

A pretty good strategy for farming this early on is using the battleaxe with the wildstrikes. Go to the Gatefront ruins at the Agheel Lake North grace, sneak up on the knight wielding it and backstab, then do two swings with wildstrikes into the heavy finisher and it should track and kill him in one go. Do this at night time and if you're quick enough you can kill him before drawing aggro then reset at the grace until you get everything you want.

                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                  • Presumably pretty poor at pounding or pulverizing, on the peak of the partisans pole packs a pacifying penetrating point that properly pursues opponents by producing prosperous presumptuously powerful paralyzing pokes particularly practical in predominantly puncturing any piece or pit of peerless plate protection by partially and permanently perforating piles of particles while possibly propelling planned piercing pricks prior to partaking in perniciously perpetuating prevalent pulsating pain partly passing plague, pregnating peril by plowing peculiar predicted pecks that probably prevail in purifying peoples pride producing preposterous pools of purified plasma prepared to prioritize proud pokes from the polished polish pole.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

A fantastic weapon that will rarely disappoint you, but at the same time, will never do the fighting for you.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                                          • Anonymous

Even though I had to invest a couple of points to use it, I've been using this for my ooga booga build as a backup to the Large Club. The tassel and strong amount of patina to the staff and blade give this one some measure of ungabungity; thus making it the least out0of-place for a caveman character out of all the spears.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

Ice spear for Maliketh and Impaling thrust for Godfrey. In my NG with it the spectral lance has been great. Very versatile. Also looks cool.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

R2’s are too slow and don’t have the range to be useful. Wish this thing had the Guardian’s Swordspear moveset or something.

Heartbreakingly lame moveset for such an iconic weapon.

                                                                                                    * just my preference, give some other attributes a try

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

No idea if I was just lucky or if the knight there has a higher drop rate, but seems like a good place to farm.

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

In PvP, despite 1h moveset being superior (rolling R1 and backstep R1 being pokes), I consistently do better when using this weapon 2-handed, and I don't really know why. The flow of combat with this weapon feels odd - it's too short to be good at thrusts and R2 is too slow to be good at sweeps.

                                                                                                            • Anonymous

Always love it when the moveset gets nerfed for the player. The knights that wield these have an absolute insane moveset with this thing. A fast triple gap closing thrust. A thrust that instantly transitions into a swing. A fast slash with a dodge. What do we get? Slow boring thrusts and an incredibly slow slash. Seriously, if you fight them with your own partizan you just get jealous of how much better they use the weapon.

                                                                                                              • Anonymous

Try it. You will not regret. I haven't had as much fun in ER like, ever. You have access to good single target attacks, sweeping heavies that are rather quick, shield pokes to fight annoying things, decent ranged option, parries and 100% physical block. With that set up you can use every single move in the game, are never out of option and can come up with multiple decent strategies to every encounter. Add some throwing jars and 10 faith defense incantations (just 1 faith investment on the Vagabond) and here you go, one of the most versatile builds in the game

                                                                                                                  • Anonymous

118 Discovery at Gatefront got it after around 20 attempts. Farming at night makes it slightly quicker. Easier to avoid the other little knight getting involved so you can insta-teleport back to grace.

                                                                                                                    • This is THE physical spear. Fantastic moveset, only outdamaged by the cross Naginata for pure physical damage, and a phenominally reliable moveset. Naginata is the raw dps weapon when you don't need sweeping attacks, and an Occult Spiked Spear will be the best bleed version of this on an arcane build since it shares the moveset and has a minimal drop in damage, but there really isn't a better physical spear in the game just for basic power and reliability.
