Elden Ring Clayman's Harpoon Notes & Tips

  • Weapon Skill: Impaling Thrust
  • This weapon can be infused with Ashes of War
  • Can be buffed by Magic or Consumables.
  • Clayman's Harpoon can be upgraded by using Smithing Stones
  • Base drop rate is 2% (at 100 Discovery).
  • A versatile weapon that can be useful for Strength Intelligence builds and pure Intelligence builds
    • When infused with Magic infusion, it offers B scaling for Intelligence while the damage scaling is primarily applied to magic damage, making it a good weapon for casting Ashes of War that inflict magic damage, such as Glintstone Pebble, Glintblade Phalanx, Ice Spear and Loretta's Slash.
    • When infused with Cold infusion, it offers 105 Cold buildup and C scaling for both Strength and Intelligence. Since the damage scaling is primarily applied to the magic damage, this makes Cold Ashes of War such as Chilling Mist, Ice Spear and Divine Beast Frost Stomp especially effective.
  • Sell Value:  er runes 13 100
  • Note: As of Patch 1.08, poise damage of all Spears has been reduced for PVP.
  • NOTE: As of Patch 1.09, the scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below.
  • NOTE: Patch 1.13 Increased poise damage of dual wield attacks of all Spears (in PVP)

which is better? uninfused, high str/int + magic buff or heavy, high str/int + magic buff?….. heavy infused reduces magic damage and scaling

      • Anonymous

Smithscript Greathammer, Smithscript Axe, Smithscript Spear, Golem Fist, Smithscript Dagger, Smithscript Cirque, best one is Carian Thrusting Shield

To answer one of the questions below: The Fire Knight Shortsword, Fire Knight Greatsword, and Queelign's Sword also are faith weapons that can be infused.

are there any other native int infusable weapons out there? i want to try a sorcerer but my class started out with high arc: i don't want to let all that bloody infusion to go to waste, but i really don't like the spear moveset.

            • Anonymous

Is there a faith version of a weapon like this? By that I mean a weapon with a faith requirement that can be infused. Only one I can see is the Erdree Dager.

For INT/FTH builds, a Sacred/Lightning infusion on this is not so hot at least in early game, because you’re stuck with E INT scaling for a while. Still E at +12, and according to this wiki, the D tier only appears at +25, so presumably the Harpoon ends up on the lower end of the D tier.

By comparison, a Magic/Cold Erdsteel Dagger gets D scaling in FTH as soon as the +2 upgrade, although it never reaches C. Then again, the Dagger will not be better if your character leans more towards FTH rather than INT. At +25, Magic/Cold Erdsteel Dagger is B INT and D FTH, while Sacred/Lightning Harpoon is B FTH and D INT. The Dagger hits faster, but the Harpoon has safer reach and can be used behind a shield.

The Flame Harpoon is interesting because while it also ends up with B FTH and D INT, the D Tier in INT is achieved starting at +10. That said, the earliest way to get a Flame Affinity is through the Red-Hot Whetblade that you get at Redmane Castle (no festival). At this point, there’s a good chance you already have the SoNaF, which is possibly your final melee weapon anyway (it has B/B scaling when maxed out and C/C starting at +3, after all).

For the early game, then, I suggest focusing on either INT or FTH until you get the SoNaF, at which point you already have access to rebirth (respec) or you are about to. Obviously, if you choose to stick with INT for the meantime, then you can stick with the Harpoon as well (without Sacred infusion). Also consider the fact that good hybrid scaling catalysts (e.g. golden order seal) are not early game anyway.

This was always a good mage weapon, but it's a great early-game weapon for an aspiring Smithscript build now too. Low stat requirements, swappable Ash of Wars and good Int scaling.

I just started a new Wretch, got my Torrent and Spirit-Calling Bell, rode straight to Siofra Well, had the spirit wolves help me bonk the fellas in the river valley a few times (two charged heavies with a club lets your crit them), then as soon as I got this shiny magic stick I went and grabbed the Gravitas AoW to slap onto it too.

A relatively quick and perfect start for an Int-focused build. I'm currently planning to use the Smithscript Cirque later on, but this spear looks so cool I'm not even sure I'll want to swap it out when the time comes.

KEEN infused Harpoon has the best available Ice Spear performance in the game. Why? AR Scaling isn't the same as Bullet Ash Scaling, and it doesn't use the same numbers. A TLDR, summary for this: A Cold Ash is Dex/Int. Harpoon has a strong KEEN Dex scaler for ashes, which is higher than for infusible MAGIC. Harpoon keeps Int scaling, so on KEEN it uses an Ash Int Scaling that is just below COLD. Putting it together, KEEN gives a benefit to Dex scaling that is much higher than the loss to int scaling.

guys you won't believe how good of a combo this is; put the Ash of War: Ice Spear on this baby and you won't regret it. I can't believe I don't see more people with this insane combo. Don't forget to comment, subscribe, and smash that 'like' button!

I used a Cold Infusion with Ice Spear on my STR/INT build and I beat Malenia on my 2nd attempt. Which is something I have never done in my 5 playthroughs of the game. Get this as fast as possible if you want to do that kind of build.

I prefer this with scholar's armament as it's the only magic dealing int scaling enchantable weapon. Boosts like 200+ ar at 65+ int

So far i'm using powerstanced Occult Clayman Harpoon, Sellen Crown, Albinauric Staff and cast mainly Oracle Bubble sorceries. I start as Prisoner and my current stat is 59 VIG, 27 INT, 12 STR and 50 ARC(other stat is not upgraded), the build works!

                            • Anonymous

to my knowledge, this is the only weapon you can make to scale with every (scaling) stat at once. Occult, bleed, or poison affinity and using a faith weapon buff such as order's blade will cause this weapon to deal physical, magic, and holy damage all of which scales off dex, str, arc (physical), int (magic), and faith (holy)

not that you would ever want to do this.

Spear scaling with str on a cold infusion, dude its literraly the magic infusion WHY IS SCALLING ON STR and spear is about DEX not STR Great job fromsoftware..

One of the only weapons that you can do a FTH/INT build since you can put a Sacred enchantment on it and it already scales w int

very deadly with cold infusion on a str int build. this thing is heavily slept on, lots of magic damage and frost resist. you could even dual wield if you want. idk how it plays in pvp, as i gave up on that mess a long time ago, but for pve, its fun, and gets the job done. also the way the spearhead lights up blue is pretty cool. good weapon.

Unironically an amazing weapon that fits multiple different builds incredibly well, although it's a lil ugly

So I'm a nerd and I like to build thematic characters with roleplay in mind. With all the Albinaurics and rejects that show up to the Haligtree, plus the emphasis on intelligence and faith both being used with an overall emphasis on Holy damage I came up with the Haligtree Archon. Basically I world two of these puppies, one with Sacred Order and the other with Sacred Blade in the main hand. Eventually so will get a magic erdsterl dagger with floaty daggers for bonus damage.

I am completely not using this as intended. Making a caveman build and this is the only spear that looks plausible for him to use. No metal in its construction and just a rock shaped into a spearhead. Hopefully it isn't too int-heavy with a Heavy infusion to take full advantage of rhe Unga bunga.

The benefit of flame art infusion Harpoon on a faith/int build is that while the int scaling isn't high, the underlying scaling curve is steep and front-loaded for the int scaling. What this means is that you get 80% of your potential scaling benefit at 50 int. These kinds of steep curves are better for hybrid builds, making the effective scaling higher at mid-investment level. Carian Regal staff for comparison is the opposite - from memory the difference from 70-80 int was ~20% increase in scaling. Harpoon is the only weapon with this profile on flame art.

Ignored this thing's existence for way too long. The combination of inherent Magic Damage and the ability to apply a Magic Infusion gives this thing bizarrely high magic damage for a melee weapon. At 80 Intelligence, you will not find higher Magic Damage on any weapon faster than a Greatsword. This, on a weapon with no stat requirement above 12. There's an argument to make for this being the single best melee weapon for an Intelligence build in the game.

At least if you're not trying to run a Frostbite Build. Cuz in that case you probably want Rogier's Rapier instead.

                                              • Anonymous

When infused with cold affinity, strength and intelligence being equal has the same damage as solely investing in intelligence as long as strength is at least 22. After int hits the soft cap of 50, str will give a greater return on investment than additional int. Tested on +25

                                                • Anonymous

Keep it standard +25, Buff this with Scholar’s Armament using a +10 Lusat’s Staff (or +10 Carian Regal Staff if you wanna conserve more Mana at the cost of some buff damage), swap your staff to the Jellyfish Shield (which looks great along side this Weapon btw) and use its damage buff AoW, equip the Spear Talisman for bonus counter hit damage and the magic scorpion charm for bonus magic damage.

Turtle behind the shield, poking them with the guard attack when they attack to trade which procs counter hits. Make good use of the harpoon’s range and respectable attack speed to land cheeky trades before turtling up again.

On a high stat Str/Int build, this thing hits extremely hard when buffed with Armament, but include the rest of the stuff I stated above and I promise you’ll Elden the **** out of their Ring in PVP or the Arena.

An easy way to farm for this as a starting Astrologer; no danger involved!

Make sure you have 1 charge on your Flask of Cerulean Tears. From the Siofra River Well Depths Site of Grace, hang left on Torrent to where many Claymen wielding this weapon are idling. Go all the way to the end of where they are, and make all of them aggressive (smack a couple of them with your starting Short Sword or whatever). Then head back downhill to where you first see them, then wait for them to all bunch together. Once they're all bunched together, target whichever one is closest to the middle and start spamming Glintstone Arc while backing up, using an FP flask charge when you run out, and continuing until they're all dead. Repeat until you have a Clayman's Harpoon (this took me 4 runs).

                                                    • Anonymous

Ainsel River Main site of grace, go down south and you'll meet 2 Claymen which you can farm for this thing.. I'm getting all the weapons in the game atm and this one is one of t he easiest if you know where (before finding this site of grace I went to Siofra river, wandered a bit and gave up)

                                                      • Anonymous

Sacred/flame art infusion on this is your only option for an int/fth weapon if you're tired of Sword of Night and Flame. Good alternative due to low stat requirements, easy farm, and choice of weapon skill.

Add on sacred blade/flaming strike to boost AR even more.

I've been messing around with the Clayman's Harpoon to see how many types of damage it can do. I put on Sacred Blade with the lightning affinity to get FOUR types of damage. Can confirm it does piercing, magical, lightning, and adds (in 9.01.1) 90 holy damage after using Sacred Blade (albeit temporarily). I tried Flame Art, but I can only get piercing, magical, and fire damage. How is this helpful? It'll do damage no matter what kind of resistances the enemy has, you can shield poke with it, and you can use it to kill undead. Is the damage the greatest? Maybe not, but nobody is safe from it.

Funny how this is the only weapon other than the Sword of Night and Flame that can have both INT and FTH scaling.

                                                                • Anonymous

Huh, almost like more weapons would be more fun and viable if they were like this. Not saying we should have a poison RoB with hoarfrost stomp but still, It's no wonder this thing is popular and fun to use.

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                            Bull-Goat's Talisman
                                                                            Stargazer Heirloom
                                                                            Two Fingers Heirloom

Step 4: Get these weapons, tools, and Ashes of War:

                                                                            +10 Lusat's Glintstone Staff
                                                                            +10 Golden Order Seal
+25 Standard Clayman's Harpoon (Glintstone Pebble)
+25 Magic Rickety Shield (Carian Retaliation)

Step 5: Get and attune these spells:

                                                                            Scholar's Armament
                                                                            Golden Vow
                                                                            Discus of Light
                                                                            Triple Ring of Light

                                                                            Step 6: Become Unstoppable:

Using a build calculator, the class that is the most point efficient with this build is the Wretch. Equip everything except the Two Fingers Heirloom, then cast Scholar's Armament on our Clayman's Harpoon, which is left un-infused because every buffable option available will just reduce our damage because of our low physical stats. After that, swap the Stargazer Heirloom for the Two Finger Heirloom, and cast Golden Vow, and unequip Lusat's to save weight. When used with the Bull-Goat's Talisman, the listed armor gives you 101 Poise, and the Omensmirk Mask gives you enough Strength to 1H the Clayman's Harpoon. The Rickety Shield is the lightest shield available, and we put Carian Retaliation on it for extra parry frames, and for the small benefit of reflecting our own Discus of Light as it returns to us to get some Glintblades. The 2 points in Mind are so that we don't need to drink when casting Scholar's Armament and Golden Vow, the 21 points in Endurance gives us just enough weight to Medium Roll after unequipping Lusat's, and everything else is dumped into Vigor to maximize our survivability.

Thank you for coming to my Build Showcase.

                                                                            • Anonymous

i played rando with a friend and was using 2 carian knigt sword for most of our playthroug but wen we got to endgame my build was falling beind in term of dps. i slaped 2 of these bad boys with cold infuse on my character and let me tel you, it was FANTASTIC, realy fun to play and pretty decent dps. 8/10 would play again

                                                                              • Anonymous

This thing does well with a frost spear ice infusion. At max level with shard of alexander and high int, it cranks ranged damage. Shirt range though.

                                                                                • Anonymous

Clayman's Harpoon - it has Physical and Magic damage by default, can be infused with Ashes of War (allowing you to add any additional elemental damage type to it) and it maintains some INT scaling regardless of which infusion you give to it (although it will lose it's DEX scaling if given the Heavy infusion).

It's default scaling is mid-high C (75) STR, high E (22) DEX and mid-high D (45) INT - but that isn't where this weapon shines. It's so powerful because when infused with either Flame Art, Sacred or Occult infusions, it ends up with scaling in 4 different stats at once. For builds with the luxury of points in Strength, Dex, Int and/or Faith/Arcane, it's a very powerful option.

It can also wield four different types of damage at the same time - being a spear, it can be infused with Sacred Blade but with the Lightning affinity selected. Upon activating Sacred blade, the weapon will be dealing damage with Physical, Magic, Lightining AND Holy at the same time, for the duration of the buff.

Finally, to get the highest possible AR out of the Clayman's Harpoon, when you have a sufficient amount of STR+DEX+FAITH, give it a Quality infusion and then buff it with an Erdtree Seal +10 with Electrify Armament or Order's Blade, to reach roughtly 1k+ AR - before Vow and FGMS or any other buffs/modifiers are considered.

Alternately, with a high Faith stat, get two and just throw Flame Art on one and buff the other, use vow and FGMS and then dual wield them. Effective in PvP as the moveset is fast and the damage is immense although it lacks poise damage - but if you're using Flame Art on both, you can also have Cragblade on both. Just remember that if you choose to go the spell-buff route for your mainhand you can't really use the AoW in your offhand (because switching 2handed to your left hand will cancel your mainhand spell buff and switching offhand weapon to a seal to buff your mainhand will cancel your offhand spear's AoW buff state)

Then consider the damage output when coupled with the Ritual Sword Talisman, Scorpion Charm Talisman and Spear Talisman counterattacks, and a consecutive attack AoW like Spinning Weapon, Repeating Thrust, Spinning Strikes and the Thorny Cracked Crystal Tear.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

You can get this very early on as an astrologer by going straight to the Siofra River Well.

Claymen are easy to dodge, so you can gather up a bunch into a tight group, then spam Glintstone Arc to take out the entire group.

Once it drops, you will have enough runes to meet the stat requirements.

This would probably go faster if you went to get the Meteorite Staff first.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                      Damage is insane?!

Standart Great Epee +25 deal 303 phys. damage.
                                                                                      Standart Harpoon +25 deal 242 phys. damage +152 mag. damage = 394!

                                                                                      • Anonymous

This weapon on a pure strength build absolutely slaps. Heavy infused 2 handed, cragblade, your AR is just ridiculous for a spear with such low weight. You can dual wield and run a different aow on your offhand for mixups. I like spectral lance aswell. DO NOT cold infuse this weapon, it is an AR stat-stick. Pump massive numbers on your enemies.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

PLEASE. Add the point that ONLY the Claymen that wield the full-sized spear actually drop this weapon. The ones who cast the Oracle Bubbles, and the ones who use the dagger variant, do not drop it.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

I ended up with two of these, and Dual weilding double frost spears has been incredibly fun lol. Might switch to my off-hand being Frost infused, and my main being buffed with Frozen Armament.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

The standard scaling looks pretty good to me for a strength build focused on buffing a bit with basic sorceries and using greatshields/using shield counters. Very strong PVE build.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

Put points into int & strength.
Put Ice spear on it or Hoarfrost Stomp.
Carry a second Claymans Harpoon with Cold spec and Chilling mist ash.
Anytime you wanna reset the frost damage slap the buff on and do your ash of war.
It will carry the black flame onto your Ice Ash of War to reset. Instant Ice/Fire Melt build.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

besides SONAF, this really is the only other weapon int/fth hybrid builds get to use. I don't even count erdsteel daggers because their scaling is so abysmal.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

Clayman's Harpoon is GOATed for int builds. Use Glintblade Phalanx AOW with magic infusion, Carian Filigreed Crest, Magic Scorpion Charm, and Magic Shrouded Crystal Tear to turn your mage build into a melee god. And the best part is you sacrifice nothing regarding your spellcasting abilities. Dump your shield too because you won't need it anymore.

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Am I just imagining that, or does the tip's blue glow get more intensive after being upgraded to +25? Seems so super glowy now, I love it!

                                                                                                      • One of the only weapons that can deal either both Magic & Fire damage, or both Magic & Holy damage. The three way split may not be good, but it can do it, and that's what matters.

Magic & Holy: reserved for this and a Magic Grease or Scholar's Armament-buffed Treespear, as far as I can tell.
Magic & Fire: reserved for this and the Sword of Night and Flame, I believe.

Equip Godfrey Icon (+15% damage), Shard of Alexander (+15% damage), Magic Scorpion Charm (+12% Magic damage). Fully charge the AoW to charge into enemies and knock them down. Only requires a sliver of Stamina to do the full charge. CHOO-CHOOOOO.

I really like fact about this weapon that you can make it scale with 4 different stats for the hybrid build. Overall damage is also pretty good

                                                                                                              • Anonymous

Kind of niche, but I think this might literally be the only melee weapon that scales with Int/ Arc.

Combine this with Blood Infusion and pair it with Albinauric staff and you can make a pretty interesting hybrid caster.

                                                                                                                • Anonymous

instead of nerfing int builds like hoarfrost, moonveil, they should buff arcane, faith, and strength builds.

                                                                                                                  • Anonymous

This weapon is a must-have for any Sorcerer build as you can use it in one of two ways.

                                                                                                                    1. Magic or Cold Affinity
This one is rather straightforward, if you aren't leveling Strength or Dexterity evenly with Intelligence to create a hybrid melee/caster build this is an excellent option. I won’t go into any numbers that deeply as those are pretty simple to understand, however it gets INSANE magic damage when given the Magic Affinity. At 60 Intelligence you get about 454 Magic damage, and at 80 Intelligence you get about 479 Magic Damage.

For Comparison the Cross-Naginata hits about 419 Magic damage at 60 Int and 441 Magic damage at 80 Int.

                                                                                                                    2. Scholar's Armament and buffing;
This one is a bit trickier to use but gets stupid returns for what you get, this works for both "quality" casters who have even Strength/Dexterity and Intelligence AND 60 Int and up builds.

                                                                                                                    60 Int:
On a build that I plan to play that would have 20 Strength, 19 Dexterity and 60 Intelligence the Standard Clayman's Harpoon it hits 536 AR unbuffed (which is respectable for an unbuffed buffing weapon on a build like this), however after buffing it with Scholar's Armament from the Academy Glintstone Staff (this adds 228 Magic Damage) it hits an AR of 764, bear in mind that a Magic Zweihander on this same build 'only' hits 671 AR. So this 5.5 weight Spear is outperforming a weapon that basically weighs three times what it does for 90 seconds (117 seconds with the Old Lord's Talisman).

For Comparison the Cold Affinity hits 579 AR and the Magic Affinity hits 649 AR, so you trade 43 AR from Cold and Frost buildup to be able to outperform weapons in tiers higher than it for a short while.

For comparison with even distribution with Strength and Intelligence:
A different build that I'm currently working on which will go to 45 Strength, 18 Dexterity and 45 Intelligence this thing hits 585 AR unbuffed, however when buffed with the Academy Glinstone Staff (adds 188.25 Magic Damage) this hits 773.25 AR (not sure how the decimal point rounds in this instance), in this instance I'm using Standard as Heavy actively makes the weapon worse by reducing the base magic damage.

In order for Heavy to surpass Standard you need at least 50 Strength, Keen you can get away with it at 40 Dexterity because the Dex scaling gets pretty solid, plus the base Magic damage doesn't get reduced as badly as it does when going with Heavy.

This thing and Scholar's Armament are a match made in heaven, or hell if you're on the receiving end of it.

My second playthrough made me appreciate this weapon more, however playthrough 3 made me fall in love with the weapon, it looks amazing, and unlike the Cane Sword it also kicks all kinds of ass.

                                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Got two, made both Cold infused, gave the right handed one Ice Spear, and have Magic Scorpion Charm. It’s time to freeze the world baby, hold onto your parkas.

                                                                                                                      • Anonymous

This weapon has achieved its final form after I added a Flame Art Bloodhound’s Step Ash, the dash, triple damage types and long reach works wonders for my Int/Faith/Dex Spellsword, not to mention the weapon matches great with my Blue charter theme.

                                                                                                                        • This weapon was made for int/dex and pure int builds. For int/dex builds keep it on keen scaling and buff it with scholar's armament for max damage, for pure int builds just slap cold infusions on it.

                                                                                                                          • Anonymous

Can be obtained early. Get yourself a decent weapon (strike damage preferable), get sacred blade, rush to Siofra. Before starting to farm it, rush to the broken statue and grab the three silver-pickled feet. Slap the sacred aow on your weapon, use a foot, and start farming.

DO NOT underestimate the claymen, they can 2 shot you. You have the advantage of speed, but you have to make sure you do not get overwhelmed, as they are mostly found in groups.

The weapon itself is solid. It deals split pierce/magic damage from the start. Works quite well with both magic and cold infusions. You may have some trouble with the crystal miners later in the game, but those shouldn't pose that much of a threat. You can also get 2, apply frost on both, and power-stance them.

I personally run it with ice spear, cold, brass shield, on a STR-INT build (with kaiden armor for viking drip). It does it's job quite well.

I do not know how it works in PVP, as I'm not a fan of that. I heard that thrust weapons are generally good, so i think it would be ok.

                                                                                                                            Overall, my favorite weapon!

                                                                                                                            • Anonymous

The Harpoon fits into a number of magic-focused builds. Depending on the specifics of your character, there are lots of Ashes of War to choose from that fit with the many excellent infusion choices.

For pure casters, if you're a fan of the spear moveset, magic infusion will not let you down. It accepts powerful magic AOWs like Glintstone Pebble and Glintblade Phalanx, and with a high B in magic scaling the Harpoon can do excellent damage from both up close and at range. The other option, standard infusion and buffing with Scholar's Armament is, in my experience, not worth the damage penelty to your weapon skill. You're trading consistent damage and high AOW impact for higher AR for a short time.

My personal favorite infusion is cold, which works best on a str/int hybrid build. With cold infusion the best choices for AOW are cold ashes like Ice Spear or Hoarfrost Stomp (nerfed but still viable!) You could also go with a magic ash, as C magic scaling is good enough to get solid damage from Pebble. As mentioned above, the various elemental infusions are stronger than the non-elemental ones, but if you can't live without Giant Hunt or Sword Dance, heavy infusion could be workable for your str/int character.

I shouldn't fail to mention keen infusion, which suffers from the consistency issues mentioned before with heavy and standard, but dex/int is a popular build and this is a viable weapon for that type of character. Not to mention how useful dexterity is for a caster.

Now here comes the really wild one: flame art (or sacred, I guess.) For all the int/fai hybrids out there, here's a potential candidate. Slap whatever ash you like on it and go to town with your three-way split damage! In all seriousness, there aren't many options for this strategy so Frankenstein's monster-ing your own int-fai weapon isn't unthinkable.
