This thing does well with a frost spear ice infusion. At max level with shard of alexander and high int, it cranks ranged damage. Shirt range though.

      • Anonymous

Clayman's Harpoon - it has Physical and Magic damage by default, can be infused with Ashes of War (allowing you to add any additional elemental damage type to it) and it maintains some INT scaling regardless of which infusion you give to it (although it will lose it's DEX scaling if given the Heavy infusion).

It's default scaling is mid-high C (75) STR, high E (22) DEX and mid-high D (45) INT - but that isn't where this weapon shines. It's so powerful because when infused with either Flame Art, Sacred or Occult infusions, it ends up with scaling in 4 different stats at once. For builds with the luxury of points in Strength, Dex, Int and/or Faith/Arcane, it's a very powerful option.

It can also wield four different types of damage at the same time - being a spear, it can be infused with Sacred Blade but with the Lightning affinity selected. Upon activating Sacred blade, the weapon will be dealing damage with Physical, Magic, Lightining AND Holy at the same time, for the duration of the buff.

Finally, to get the highest possible AR out of the Clayman's Harpoon, when you have a sufficient amount of STR+DEX+FAITH, give it a Quality infusion and then buff it with an Erdtree Seal +10 with Electrify Armament or Order's Blade, to reach roughtly 1k+ AR - before Vow and FGMS or any other buffs/modifiers are considered.

Alternately, with a high Faith stat, get two and just throw Flame Art on one and buff the other, use vow and FGMS and then dual wield them. Effective in PvP as the moveset is fast and the damage is immense although it lacks poise damage - but if you're using Flame Art on both, you can also have Cragblade on both. Just remember that if you choose to go the spell-buff route for your mainhand you can't really use the AoW in your offhand (because switching 2handed to your left hand will cancel your mainhand spell buff and switching offhand weapon to a seal to buff your mainhand will cancel your offhand spear's AoW buff state)

Then consider the damage output when coupled with the Ritual Sword Talisman, Scorpion Charm Talisman and Spear Talisman counterattacks, and a consecutive attack AoW like Spinning Weapon, Repeating Thrust, Spinning Strikes and the Thorny Cracked Crystal Tear.

You can get this very early on as an astrologer by going straight to the Siofra River Well.

Claymen are easy to dodge, so you can gather up a bunch into a tight group, then spam Glintstone Arc to take out the entire group.

Once it drops, you will have enough runes to meet the stat requirements.

This would probably go faster if you went to get the Meteorite Staff first.

            Damage is insane?!

Standart Great Epee +25 deal 303 phys. damage.
            Standart Harpoon +25 deal 242 phys. damage +152 mag. damage = 394!

This weapon on a pure strength build absolutely slaps. Heavy infused 2 handed, cragblade, your AR is just ridiculous for a spear with such low weight. You can dual wield and run a different aow on your offhand for mixups. I like spectral lance aswell. DO NOT cold infuse this weapon, it is an AR stat-stick. Pump massive numbers on your enemies.

              • Anonymous

PLEASE. Add the point that ONLY the Claymen that wield the full-sized spear actually drop this weapon. The ones who cast the Oracle Bubbles, and the ones who use the dagger variant, do not drop it.

I ended up with two of these, and Dual weilding double frost spears has been incredibly fun lol. Might switch to my off-hand being Frost infused, and my main being buffed with Frozen Armament.

The standard scaling looks pretty good to me for a strength build focused on buffing a bit with basic sorceries and using greatshields/using shield counters. Very strong PVE build.

An idea: Put enough points into faith to put black flame blade on it.
Put points into int & strength.
Put Ice spear on it or Hoarfrost Stomp.
Carry a second Claymans Harpoon with Cold spec and Chilling mist ash.
Anytime you wanna reset the frost damage slap the buff on and do your ash of war.
It will carry the black flame onto your Ice Ash of War to reset. Instant Ice/Fire Melt build.

besides SONAF, this really is the only other weapon int/fth hybrid builds get to use. I don't even count erdsteel daggers because their scaling is so abysmal.

Clayman's Harpoon is GOATed for int builds. Use Glintblade Phalanx AOW with magic infusion, Carian Filigreed Crest, Magic Scorpion Charm, and Magic Shrouded Crystal Tear to turn your mage build into a melee god. And the best part is you sacrifice nothing regarding your spellcasting abilities. Dump your shield too because you won't need it anymore.

Am I just imagining that, or does the tip's blue glow get more intensive after being upgraded to +25? Seems so super glowy now, I love it!

                            • One of the only weapons that can deal either both Magic & Fire damage, or both Magic & Holy damage. The three way split may not be good, but it can do it, and that's what matters.

Magic & Holy: reserved for this and a Magic Grease or Scholar's Armament-buffed Treespear, as far as I can tell.
Magic & Fire: reserved for this and the Sword of Night and Flame, I believe.

use Heavy for when you wanna two hand this weapon for maximum damage (don't forget to spec into some Int for sorceries if you wanna cast those), you can also pair it with scholars armament for even more damage
and use Magic or Cold for one hand with a staff or shield pokes
or do what ever you please this weapon is so versatile that it could work with any build you'd like

Give Clayman’s Harpoon the “Charge Forth” AoW with Magic infusion. Equip Godfrey Icon (+15% damage), Shard of Alexander (+15% damage), Magic Scorpion Charm (+12% Magic damage). Fully charge the AoW to charge into enemies and knock them down. Only requires a sliver of Stamina to do the full charge. CHOO-CHOOOOO.

I really like fact about this weapon that you can make it scale with 4 different stats for the hybrid build. Overall damage is also pretty good

Kind of niche, but I think this might literally be the only melee weapon that scales with Int/ Arc.

Combine this with Blood Infusion and pair it with Albinauric staff and you can make a pretty interesting hybrid caster.

instead of nerfing int builds like hoarfrost, moonveil, they should buff arcane, faith, and strength builds.

This weapon is a must-have for any Sorcerer build as you can use it in one of two ways.

                                          1. Magic or Cold Affinity
This one is rather straightforward, if you aren't leveling Strength or Dexterity evenly with Intelligence to create a hybrid melee/caster build this is an excellent option. I won’t go into any numbers that deeply as those are pretty simple to understand, however it gets INSANE magic damage when given the Magic Affinity. At 60 Intelligence you get about 454 Magic damage, and at 80 Intelligence you get about 479 Magic Damage.

For Comparison the Cross-Naginata hits about 419 Magic damage at 60 Int and 441 Magic damage at 80 Int.

                                          2. Scholar's Armament and buffing;
This one is a bit trickier to use but gets stupid returns for what you get, this works for both "quality" casters who have even Strength/Dexterity and Intelligence AND 60 Int and up builds.

                                          60 Int:
On a build that I plan to play that would have 20 Strength, 19 Dexterity and 60 Intelligence the Standard Clayman's Harpoon it hits 536 AR unbuffed (which is respectable for an unbuffed buffing weapon on a build like this), however after buffing it with Scholar's Armament from the Academy Glintstone Staff (this adds 228 Magic Damage) it hits an AR of 764, bear in mind that a Magic Zweihander on this same build 'only' hits 671 AR. So this 5.5 weight Spear is outperforming a weapon that basically weighs three times what it does for 90 seconds (117 seconds with the Old Lord's Talisman).

For Comparison the Cold Affinity hits 579 AR and the Magic Affinity hits 649 AR, so you trade 43 AR from Cold and Frost buildup to be able to outperform weapons in tiers higher than it for a short while.

For comparison with even distribution with Strength and Intelligence:
A different build that I'm currently working on which will go to 45 Strength, 18 Dexterity and 45 Intelligence this thing hits 585 AR unbuffed, however when buffed with the Academy Glinstone Staff (adds 188.25 Magic Damage) this hits 773.25 AR (not sure how the decimal point rounds in this instance), in this instance I'm using Standard as Heavy actively makes the weapon worse by reducing the base magic damage.

In order for Heavy to surpass Standard you need at least 50 Strength, Keen you can get away with it at 40 Dexterity because the Dex scaling gets pretty solid, plus the base Magic damage doesn't get reduced as badly as it does when going with Heavy.

This thing and Scholar's Armament are a match made in heaven, or hell if you're on the receiving end of it.

My second playthrough made me appreciate this weapon more, however playthrough 3 made me fall in love with the weapon, it looks amazing, and unlike the Cane Sword it also kicks all kinds of ass.

Got two, made both Cold infused, gave the right handed one Ice Spear, and have Magic Scorpion Charm. It’s time to freeze the world baby, hold onto your parkas.

This weapon has achieved its final form after I added a Flame Art Bloodhound’s Step Ash, the dash, triple damage types and long reach works wonders for my Int/Faith/Dex Spellsword, not to mention the weapon matches great with my Blue charter theme.

                                              • This weapon was made for int/dex and pure int builds. For int/dex builds keep it on keen scaling and buff it with scholar's armament for max damage, for pure int builds just slap cold infusions on it.

                                                • Anonymous

Can be obtained early. Get yourself a decent weapon (strike damage preferable), get sacred blade, rush to Siofra. Before starting to farm it, rush to the broken statue and grab the three silver-pickled feet. Slap the sacred aow on your weapon, use a foot, and start farming.

DO NOT underestimate the claymen, they can 2 shot you. You have the advantage of speed, but you have to make sure you do not get overwhelmed, as they are mostly found in groups.

The weapon itself is solid. It deals split pierce/magic damage from the start. Works quite well with both magic and cold infusions. You may have some trouble with the crystal miners later in the game, but those shouldn't pose that much of a threat. You can also get 2, apply frost on both, and power-stance them.

I personally run it with ice spear, cold, brass shield, on a STR-INT build (with kaiden armor for viking drip). It does it's job quite well.

I do not know how it works in PVP, as I'm not a fan of that. I heard that thrust weapons are generally good, so i think it would be ok.

                                                  Overall, my favorite weapon!

                                                  • Anonymous

The Harpoon fits into a number of magic-focused builds. Depending on the specifics of your character, there are lots of Ashes of War to choose from that fit with the many excellent infusion choices.

For pure casters, if you're a fan of the spear moveset, magic infusion will not let you down. It accepts powerful magic AOWs like Glintstone Pebble and Glintblade Phalanx, and with a high B in magic scaling the Harpoon can do excellent damage from both up close and at range. The other option, standard infusion and buffing with Scholar's Armament is, in my experience, not worth the damage penelty to your weapon skill. You're trading consistent damage and high AOW impact for higher AR for a short time.

My personal favorite infusion is cold, which works best on a str/int hybrid build. With cold infusion the best choices for AOW are cold ashes like Ice Spear or Hoarfrost Stomp (nerfed but still viable!) You could also go with a magic ash, as C magic scaling is good enough to get solid damage from Pebble. As mentioned above, the various elemental infusions are stronger than the non-elemental ones, but if you can't live without Giant Hunt or Sword Dance, heavy infusion could be workable for your str/int character.

I shouldn't fail to mention keen infusion, which suffers from the consistency issues mentioned before with heavy and standard, but dex/int is a popular build and this is a viable weapon for that type of character. Not to mention how useful dexterity is for a caster.

Now here comes the really wild one: flame art (or sacred, I guess.) For all the int/fai hybrids out there, here's a potential candidate. Slap whatever ash you like on it and go to town with your three-way split damage! In all seriousness, there aren't many options for this strategy so Frankenstein's monster-ing your own int-fai weapon isn't unthinkable.

                                                    • Anonymous

this is a really nice weapon, i completely overlooked it at first but after using it for a while it is very nice.

                                                      • Anonymous

As with most Ashes of War, letter scaling does matter when it comes to the damage per cast. So although this weapon has base Int scaling and can be buffed with Scholar's Armament, you will lose out on damage if you use Magic AoW without using a Magic infusion. This is because it has a D scaling in Int when uninfused, which turns to a B when infused with Magic. The Magic AoW will take the scaling of the weapon rather than the AR of the weapon to calculate its damage. And since Scholar's Armament doesn't add scaling, just AR based on your Sorcery scaling of your Staff, you'll see no increase to the weapon art. So keep this in mind on whether you R1/R2 with this weapon more, or cast its weapon art more like Glintstone Pebble, Glintblade Phalanx, or even Ice Spear. The only time this doesn't count is when the weapon art uses AR in its formula, like most Heavy/Keen/Quality ashes such as Sword Dance, Repeating Thrusts, Phantom Slash, etc.

                                                        • Anonymous

For Faith/Int split builds, this weapon is actually excellent and may be even better than a straight Int build in terms of damage; with 42 Int/60 Faith, I dual wield a pair at +25 that each do 688. In PvE, this is great because you can wield a pair with Flame of the Redmanes and Black Flame tornado, allowing you to break poise and then land the tornado.

In PvP, this also allows you to use black flame tornado as well as other really good PvP faith ashes such as Flaming Strike and Thunderbolt, as well as godly Int Ashes like Glintstone Pebble and Glintstone Phalanx with cold damage, all with the excellent dual spears moveset. I cannot overstate how excellent this weapon is in general, and if you have any INT in your build, it's a very nice weapon to have just for the huge utility it offers.

                                                          • Anonymous

You can easily double your AR with this weapon using Standard Golden Vow AoW + Scholar's Armament while maximizing int, the C Scaling for strength is additional damage (personally I dont really maximize on that, after reaching the 80 int with a bit of mixed gear, dumping the rest on strength is still a good way to go I guess) but Sorc scaling of Scholar's Arm is a lot better for increasing your overall AR, its ridiculously good for pvp and pve.

But if you want to run around without having to rely on the buff once in a while Magic Imbued is the way to go, personally for pvp Gravitas pairs well with this long range poke weapon usually catches people offguard after getting pulled with a decent damaging gravitas since it scales with Int and magic.

                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                  • Anonymous

With basic STR and DEX requirements, standard gets 275 physical AR while magic affinity only has 189 physical AR. The gaps widens with each extra point of STR and DEX.

                                                                    • Anonymous

Don’t bother setting it to standard or Heavy/Keen/Quality and using Scholar’s Armament. It won’t do more damage. Use the scorpion talisman, put down terra Magica before you weapon skill if you’re feeling min/max. This will produce much more magic damage, which will be better in all situations outside of enemies with high magic mitigation, like a Glintstone dragon.

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                          • Anonymous

While on my sorcerer, I feel like running this on Standard affinity with Scholar's Armaments is the only real competitor to Moonveil, because this weapon is the only one I know of that scales with Int, but can still be enchanted. You have a large choice of ashes to use with it - Glintstone Pebble L2 into R2 is very good.

That said, you have to keep it buffed, you have to give up a spell slot to the buff, you have to recast the buff mid-battle if it falls off, you can never use a buffed shield if the situation calls for it (that would drop the spear buff), and it's all stab moves. It's definitely more of a hassle.

                                                                              Both are solid choices.

                                                                              • Anonymous

If you want to make an Int Arc hybrid, this is the only weapon for it. As occult, the intelligence scaling actually increases (though the base damage goes down), the arcane scaling is good, and the overall damage is solid. Spectral Lance has a freaky amount of poise break, and two hits will stagger even those annoying banished knights for an easy riposte.

                                                                                • Anonymous

This weapon is MASSIVELY slept on. Running 2 of these bad bois at +3 for a level ~30 invade build, left one cold infused (as that provides more AR than magic at low upgrade level) and right one standard but buffed with meteor staff scholars armament, and running glintstone pebble AoW. Thing tears people apart and you have tons of stats to put into vigor. Obviously +10 int and magic damage increasing physick rounds everything out.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

warning for int/fth builds, the int scaling is decreased every upgrade after +20 on the sacred and flame art infusion paths

                                                                                    • Heavy Harpoon with the Fingerprint Shield. You can cast magic armament to make it even stronger! Best weapon for str/int spear and shield build.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

This can be flame/scared imbued and keeps Int Scaling, kind like the reverse of the Erdtree dagger.
Very handy for fai/int builds not using the SoN&F.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

This is the closest weapon to looking like what the nomad merchants hold at their little camps if you really feel like role playing and looking like a merchant lol

                                                                                          • Anonymous

For a INT focused character, Standard affinity actually is the best for damage due to higher base physical and magic attack which can be modified with Scholar's Armament.

Cold is another alternative which seems to completely outclass the magic affinity in terms of damage and obviously can afflict enemies with Frostbite.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

This is a Glintstone Pebble AoW-eligible weapon (and the only native Int-scaling one). And that AoW is scaling REALLY strongly with Int.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

Powerstanced with 2 of this cold spear is outstanding damage.
You will never back to Darkmoon GS or Moonveil again.

                                                                                                • the fact that this weapon powerstanced is the best weapon not even close for a strenght/int build (maybe for a pure int build too) is just proof of the current bad balancing of the overall weapon system. Note that i love FromSoft and all the souls, and i love elden ring. I really hope and believe that they will make it way better than it is right now with the future updates. But for now, the fact that this weapon is the only weapon in the game to have an innate int scaling AND that is infusable makes it by far the best weapon to powerstance as a str/int build. you just gain so much AR on top as possible cold procs (very easily with the powerstance) and more range than most weapon is just ridiculous given that its just such a ridiculous weapon. For example, with 71INT and 32 str, my Moonlight GS is about 766 AR, only one of this spear is 606 with a cold infusion, powerstance it and you get two 606 AR fast long ranged weapons with an almost instant cold proc for more burst. You can even add that most of these weapons attacks are catchrolls and that you can even hide yourself behind a shield with one of these in your hand to spam the enemy with cold procs while staying safe. Once again, i think its ridiculous how good these are compared to most weapons in the game for a str/int. i really hope that Miyazaki will bestow us with further balance updates and make more int based weapons (such as crystal swords/caria sword) more interesting for int builds.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

Reminds me of DS2's Silverblack Spear. It naturally scaled with dark but as long as you don't infuse it with dark, you can use spell buffs on it, further increasing its natural dark damage.

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

these are relatively easy to farm if you happen to have dragon incantations. Note that it's the Claymans WITH the spears that drop them, not just any. Sometimes you wanna check the corners there, for small groups where several wear them.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

This is a really solid pick for STR/INT builds:
                                                                                                        - Cold Infusion (Frostbite, +MagicDmg, C/C STR/INT scaling)
                                                                                                        - Powerstanced (insane L1 moveset)
                                                                                                        - Your choice of Ash of War (Bloodhound Step is really good)

You'll get a frostbite proc in 1-2 L1s most of the time. On my SL125 STR build these bad boys have been carrying me through both PvP and end-game bosses alike (with a fire weapon on the side to reset frostbite)

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

This is lowkey one of the best magic weapons in the game. With Dex/Int for faster casting and harder hitting spells, this is a fantastic primary weapon with Keen Infusion. The best part being that it can be buffed with Scholar's Armaments and your choice of Ash of War, unlike just about any other base magic damaging weapon in the game. +25 Clayman with +9 Lusat's, 16 Str / 40 Dex / 80 Int, Magic Scorpion Charm, and Magic Crystal Tear, I'm getting 1008 AR. As where Moonlight GS L2 buff gives me 988 AR with the same build and is slow af to use. My favourite AoWs so far are Repeating Thrust, Sword Dance, and Ice Spear. Hits like a truck.

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                                            • Anonymous

On a INT build, it can do some good damage with magic infusion, making it do mostly magic damage.
And with an Occult infusion, it can be one of the few weapons to use with a ARC + (low) INT hybrid if you're going to use the Albinauric Staff for sorceries.

There's better weapons but it can be a fun one.

                                                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                                                • Anonymous

Time to pump 80 int and never cast a spell (besides the armament of course).

                                                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                                                          • Anonymous

The reason why it sucks that this is the only hybrid weapon with the ability to be imbued is that its natural Int growth is pretty mediocre

At +12 it's still at E/B/D for Str/Dex/Int, whereas the Moonveil at +5 is E/C/C so it remains to be seen which one is better uber late.

In fact, I tested them at +0 and imbued Clayman's dealt a little over twice Moonveil damage. But now they're basically the same (18 Dex 23 Int). Following this trend, Moonveil will be better later.

                                                                                                                            • Anonymous

Best weapon gor magic builds early game in my opinion. Buffing with Scholar's Armament almost double damage dealing to enemies. One handed has better reach and running R2 is great to catch players in invasions ;)

Also, the bonus damage it gets from Armament is more than twice what pure physical weapons get, making it the best melee weapon for Int casters. Close to Carian Slicer damage but with better range and lower cost, albeit slower.
