This is the page for the Ash of War: Thop's Barrier. Click here for the sorcery Thops's Barrier (Spell)
Ash of War: Thops's Barrier is an Ash of War and Upgrade Material in Elden Ring. Ash of War: Thops's Barrier provides Magic affinity and the Thops's Barrier Skill. Ashes of War can be equipped on Weapons and Shields to modify the Skill or an equipment, or to apply affinities that modify scaling values.
This Ash of War grants an armament the Magic affinity and the following skill:
"Thops's Barrier: Erect a magical forcefield while swinging the shield to deflect sorceries and incantations. Can also be used in the same way as a regular parry."
Usable on small and medium shields.
Ash of War: Thops's Barrier Location in Elden Ring
- In Church of Irith: Dropped by a Teardrop Scarab after delivering the spare Academy Glintstone Key to Thops. Reload the area after delivering the key to spawn the scarab. [Map Link]

Good way to get this buffed: change ownership of the deflected projectile, reset projectile duration, reflect it back to the point of origin.

I use thops parry because I think he's a genius and looks cool. My man deserved better, all hail the baldy

Everyone talking about how to buff this without making it a worse carian retaliation when the solution is simple. Let it be used by staves.

Still going to use it on my Ice Crest Shield to mimic the Sacred Bloom Shield from DS3, but I wish that this would get buffed so that I don't feel like an idiot for using this over Carian Retaliation, which also doesn't cost any FP when you parry regular attacks on top of having much better frame data, and for a small FP fee on spell parries you get to actually deal damage with the glintblades.

This AoW can help you learn parrying. That faction of a second the blue Carian figure stays on the screen is the parrying window. You time it so the enemy's attack hits the blue figure.

Honestly I dont care about any of parry skills additional effect. I just use this one cause I like the color more.

Considering the effect of the spell version, the ash of war is considerably inferior. I wish this was used as a block skill, instead of a parry skill.

you don't have to do Thop's quest to get this, you just have to kill him (Though I recommend killing him in NG+ if you did not know about it)
- Anonymous
Sure, you can always just DODGE the spell, but you gotta admit using this to negate the spell is a hell of a lot cooler.

So if carian retaliation exists, and both AoW can be obtained at roughly the same point in the game... what's the point of this?
- Anonymous
The one time I tried using this was against the guy spamming Loretta's Greatbow in Carian Study Hall, so I assumed this AoW just had an insanely small window making it useless. I'll have to try it again after reading this page.

Today I found out something extremely weird. When parrying with Thops's Barrier, it consumed stamina twice in rapid succession, but not when I had zero FP (and therefore spell parrying was disabled). Does this happen with the other three magic parry skills as well?
- Anonymous
i just noticed something about this ash of war i haven't seen mentioned. Although the skill doesn't consume any FP to use, it doesn't activate if you have 0 FP.

So what does this do exactly? Parry physical attacks or magical attacks?

Is this bugged? There's some enemies that can not be parried with this Ash on, which can be parried with any regular parry. Example being the Leyndell Soldiers at Seethewater Cave, on Mt. Gelmir. Would be interesting if anyone else could reproduce this.

As of the new update, this drops from completing Thops questline, once you find him in Raya Lucaria after giving him the second glintstone gate key

If you got this from the island scarab before 1.03 you can still kill the church scarab, but it doesn't drop anything.

The teardrop scarab near Samarag doesn't drop this anymore, it drops a somber smithing stone [2]

Is there any downside to using this over the standard parry?

The Ash of war version of "The only spell that reflects the light and stars of the Eldon Beast."

Weirdly, I saw the scarab at the new location but upon killing it the Ash of War didn't drop. Nothing did. Guess I gotta wait for NG+

I killed the scarab that spawns in the church but it didnt drop anything, and the scarab on the island dropped somber smithing stones for me. Something weid is going on and I think I cant get this ash in this ng.

This ash of war now drops of a Teardrop Scarab in the Church of Irith. I've not tested it too much, but the Teardrop Scarab only appeared on my character that had actually gone through the Academy of Raya Lucaria and given Thops the Glintstone Key and had him move. Hope this helps anyone who was as confused as me after 1.03

Seems that the drop location for this has changed. First playthrough I got it off the island in Liurnia. I just went over there in a new playthrough, no scarab to be found. Probably changed their minds on how they want you to get this Ash and now it only drops at Church of Irith after Thops leaves.

Thops barrier is now at the church of Irith, after Thops has left it’ll be a scarab beetle soon as you enter

Somehow the scarab that was suppose to give me this skill dropped me a Somber Smithing Stone [6] instead. I shot it with my madness eye lazer and one-shotted it. I'm thinking I'm suppose to let it teleport at least once? Or did the patch changed it?

I killed the Teardrop Scarab on the island, but it drops two Somber Smithing Stones

I did thop's quest before getting this ash. It's still on the island and never moved to the church. When I kill it on the island it doesn't drop anything. Is it bugged?

Alright against small arcane missile.
Some spells just hit the ground after they get repelled, explore and still can deal aoe damage to you.
- Anonymous
Spells just kind of slid around it, need to test it but i bet some spell could still hit you if they get deflected

I got Thops's Barrier at the church of Irith after giving thop the key and resetting the area.

If this costs no fp, I can see this being better than carian retaliation.
- Anonymous
I've been trying to test this on Radahns first attack wave, but so far I've got nothing
Can someone higher level or with better parry timing try this out?
I think ASH OF WAR: CARIAN RETALIATION is way better.
Gives visual indication that you parried the magic and creates projectiles as well

Feels the same as a normal parry, spells just kind of slid around you, wonder if it works on lightning bolts
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Does it inherit the better parry frames of buckler/small shield and such?
- Anonymous
Is there any disadvantage of using this instead of a normal parry? Maybe less parry frames?
Alright this thing is underrated in my opinion. The parry also deflects physical projectiles AND Stormstomp!
Been testing builds in the arena and just been spamming this to see what happens. It deflects Stone of Garranq. Stormstomp just gets completely negated. Can stand right in front of the caster, parry the wind (lolol), not take damage, no stagger and you're right there in the caster's face.
It also cancels out Beast Roar projectiles. I'd imagine it should deflect arrows as well.
0 FP.... Try it out!
Thank you, Thop. You beautiful bald bastard. Thank you.
