Ash of War: Aspects of the Crucible: Wings is an Ash of War and Upgrade Material in Elden Ring. It is a brand-new Ash of War in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. Ash of War: Aspects of the Crucible: Wings provides Sacred affinity and the Aspects of the Crucible: Wings Skill. Ashes of War can be equipped on Weapons and Shields to modify the Skill or an equipment, or to apply affinities that modify scaling values. The Aspects of the Crucible is a Flight attack that has a unique animation using Twinblades Weapons.
This Ash of War grants an armament the Sacred affinity and the following skill:
"Aspects of the Crucible (Wings): This skill originates from the lifeforms of the Crucible. Grow a golden pair of wings and take to the air before diving down at the foe, weapon first. A spinning attack is performed when wielding a twinblade."
Usable on swords as well as polearms capable of thrusting (colossal weapons excepted).

The thrust hits extremely hard (at least on non-twinblade weapons), but don't underestimate the value of the jump in the beginning of the animation - it can be used to dodge a lot of attacks, particularly ground stomps, then punish the enemy.

FromSoft give me the slam version for spears and my life is yours!
I was fighting the divine bird in Enir Ilim, he kept attacking me with his flying attacks and I could only use Raptor of the mists to duck and jump kick counter. Using the grave quill bird torso and Divine Bird set, I was running martial arts and then switched to finish on my gargoyle twin-blade with holy grease and slap this bad boy. It was perfect. Perfect. Everything, down to the last-minute details.

Im thibkijg of doing a spartan build, using broad sword, smithscript spear and golden grratshield. Would this be alright on the spear, for a mythological spartan kind of vibe?

Even with recent buff the damage of the twinblade version is laughably weak. Like I can't clear a small group of the weakest enemies in any area, half the hits still miss and whatever hits isn't enough to kill the weakest mobs.
- Anonymous
with the full crucible set this bad boy trivalised most over world exploration and combat in the dlc, 2 shots divine warriors in elim, and does obscene damage with only just 40 to 50 faith on a great katana. recently playing a new save without this and dlc is alot harder with out it.

FOR PVP: UGS crouch poke into this is auto death. Perfect roll catch as usually people dodge back, but time the frame perfectly. I'm 10/10 in the areba using it, maybe a fluke cause no one expects it but that element of surprise adds to the fun.

Does spear talisman affect the thrust damage when doing it on Colossal Swords?

I mash this button instead of panic rolling and it works 80% of the time

Here's how you make this thing good.
Don't use holy affinity infusion, use the regular ones. Then, use Bloodflame Blade.
Boom, problem solved.
- Anonymous
If used properly, this skill can make it very hard for certain enemies and bosses to hit you. When closer to the enemy, the backwards leap can carry you out of range of some attacks. When further away, it carries you far enough that you can land a hit before the enemy even realizes you’re in range.
- Anonymous
needs 10 more buffs. by the time this is good we will probably be a month from the next fromsoft game
- Anonymous
This ash is really bad; recent buff wasn’t enough. Why bother with this when we can have piercing fang? This is just slower and weaker; it doesn’t penetrate shields and it has less range too.
- Anonymous
This Ash makes me wish that the Crucible Knight weapons were infusable.
Now I need to use a sidearm to equip it on my full Crucible Knight build. Imagine if you could put it on Ordovis' greatsword, Siluria's tree or Devonia's Hammer instead.
- Anonymous
Next DLC has a crucible dragon boss, all the aspects of the crucible are dragon abilities
- Anonymous
For some reason this does HUGE damage on the greatsword or fireknight greatsword. Depending on who you fight I've done almost 8k damage with minimal buffs, idk what people are talking about with it having low damage. LOWEST I've seen was about 2.8k
- Anonymous
Pretty fun and flashy Ash even on weapon classes besides twin blades. Twinblades might actually make the Ash LESS reliable honestly. I've been enjoying using this on Milady which normally only has double-hit heavy attacks, this gives me one super long range thrust for high damage and stagger, and I even get to avoid some attacks AND get a bit of hyper armor!
Bonus points, the wings just look neat coupled with my Gravebird Blackquill Armor. Like your feathers aren't just for show and you can actually spread your wings for a quick burst of flight.
- Anonymous
Works as an interesting distance-closer or dodge. You charge pretty far forward, and the height you get at first can definitely dodge a decent amount of attacks. The twinblade version seems generally worse, but on big targets or in PvP it definitely has some extra potential. Most importantly it's also REALLY cool
- Anonymous
Damage on this is really good now, and the hyper armor means you won't get staggered by everything (though it's not enough hyper armor to just fire it up in someones face). And the buff to directional control makes it much easier to free aim, it has some problems with hitting locked on targets.
Still, it's a high commitment aow so you can't just spam it. But feels much more viable now, and it's fun to use. Combine with shard, spear talisman and the crucible armor for max effect. Performs best on strength builds with a large weapon, as they can get the most value from the counter hit.
- Anonymous
Trying to find a weapon that matches it aesthetically is so hard
- Anonymous
Wait, were people actually moaning about it lacking in damage?
I used this on a holy claymore against Messmer, got about 1800 damage per usage and that was without Alexander shard or any substantial buffs.
And now it was buffed in an update, so this thing would probably rip right through Messmer even more.
- Anonymous
Twinblade deals way more damage if you land all hits, but to actually land all the hits, the enemy has to be a large enemy or flat enough that you don't slide off it, cause this thing wants to go places. the normal version deals more burst damage and i think it has less recovery(i have yet to test this), but less damage overall. during a brief testing outside the third church of marika, the twinblades also seemed to travel significantly further than the normal version.

it might not be the best ash of war but it's my favourite and that's what matters
- Anonymous
All weapon classes have their own damage modifier for this compared to before the buff, where it was twinblade and everything else bundled together. For example, Colossal Swords got slightly more damage than before, but smaller weapons got a pretty sizeable buff on this. Will be interesting to see how this AoW plays out now.

People need to understand one undeniable and absolute truth here:
From Software does not care about logical game design, they only care about the mechanical function of frustration.
It is THE integral part of their game design philosophy.
It is in every part of their games.
And it is really everything about their games. The bad tech and optimization, lack of QoL, lack of balancing, lack of clear directions, unfair, over done boss encounters and an insane amount of useless design choices like this ash for example. So many things that are made to be annoying. Sometimes just as a tiny annoyance, sometimes as a huge one, but all times some form of frustration factor.
I finally realized they want us to suffer just to give us bread crumbs and they crumbs became dust particles and atoms, so the suffering wasn't worth it anymore and their game became boring.
- Anonymous
A lot of people are hating on this ash of war, but I actually really like it. I do agree that it could use a bit of hyper armor though.
- Anonymous
Add hyper armour to this move or make it a roar that changes the heavy attacks into something with wings
- Anonymous
Not only it is lacking in damage, poise and other aspects, I wish this was a chargeable skill, to have a bit more similarity with some of the other Crucibe Knight stuff and be affected by Godfrey's Icon talisman.
Still looks cool and I'll keep giving it more chances but I'm a bit underwhelmed by it so far.
- Anonymous
can seemingly be used during the recovery for a lot of things so i find it kinda useful to use mid combo in pve, especially if whatever attack i did made the enemy flinch. im using it on flame art zwei and it does pretty good damage but its mostly good for its amazing range, the aforementioned recovery thing and the way you dodge backwards into the air which can actually be pretty nice to dodge out of an enemy attack and then punish all in one move. also its very stylish
- Anonymous
It has the hyper armor of a soiled diaper and the tracking of a deceased bloodhound
It’s genuinely useless, any competent player can walk sideways and watch as you fly passed them, and this is implying that you don’t get swatted out of the air like a one winged fly
Although the description boasts of the Twinblades' spinning attack, the truth is that it's considerably worse than the standard version
- Anonymous
On most weapons: Not particularly impressive damage considering the cast time and FP cost.
On a twinblade: Miss 75% of the hits.
Make your choice.
How is the damage of the ash calculated? Is it just a standard heavy from the equipped weapon?
Is the damage all physical, all faith, or split damage?
I've used it on Milady, and it seemed like a standard heavy w/ extra stance damage. If that is all it is and given its very long start up time (which lacks any kind of hyper armor), then it's just a flashy but useless ash of war.
Really hoping there's something more here that I am just not seeing.
- Anonymous
I really want to like it. I was so hyped for it and was so excited for my Valkyrie build to have literal wings now. But playing with it is like an extra challenge. No hyperarmor, range is surprisingly shorter than one would think, most ground attacks hit you anyway even when in air. Holding shield is enough to fully stop it. And worst of all: after you land (usually in the enemy face) there is a short window of recovery during which you can't dodge, block or attack and therefore the counterattack of your target hits you fully. Honestly I use it mostly for disengaging or shortening the distance. Giant hunt still stands as one of the best spear ashes of war...

Kind of wish that this had a 2nd alternate version that does the divebomb explosion that Crucible Knights using a spear like Siluria use.
Works on colossal swords like zweihander, greatsword, and fire knights greatsword. I have an unoptimized build, with 45str/25dex/45fth, and at +25 sacred infused with Shard of Alexander and Crucible Set this is doing 4000 damage to the fire knights in shadow keep
- Anonymous
This says it can't be used on collosal weapons but it can be put on Fire Knights Greatsword to really good effect
- Anonymous
Not certain how feasible this is, but if you land all 8 slashes on the twinblade version with Bloodflame Blade active, it will do a respectable 320 bleed buildup. Still tough to use since the twinblade version is difficult to aim, but I could see this easily killing players in a single interaction if it lands. Also don't worry about running any particular infusion on this, it only takes your weapon's AR into consideration.
- Anonymous
Can you charge it like the other crucible weapon skills? I hope it benefits from the godfrey icon...

Really wish this could be used on a dueling shield like they showed in the trailer
I am a bit sad that this isn't an incantation like the others but I guess it makes sense with the way the boss fought
- Anonymous
The start up of the ash of war has you jump up and away from where you are facing and inputting a direction in the air, while not locked onto a target, allows you to dive towards that direction. Pretty good way to disengage from fights quickly. Some hitboxes will cause you to "get stuck" in front of them which can be dangerous considering the long animation or helpful for landing multiple polearm hits, but it is possible to clip past enemies giving you space to recover after the attack. It helps to manually aim slightly to the side or unlocking after beginning the dive animation but it's not very reliable. Mostly useful for humanoid targets with high poise in my experiences so far.

I'm in love with this. Came to the misbegotten near the fissure cross and hit l2 just as he readied for his pounce. Dodged his slam and then gored him with troll's golden sword. Very satisfying!
- Anonymous
The startup of the attack isn't simply an animation, it actually leaves you in the air, allowing you to dodge attacks that travel on the ground such as the furnace golem stomps. Makes me wonder if the claw talisman can work with this.
- Anonymous
To be honest I wanted this to be an incantation but after reading the comments below I kind of agree with other people about it being an AOW. What they could do to make this better i believe is to fix the tracking and allow the AOW to let people input light attack for a lunge or input heavy attack for a slam. That way the AOW can be used in different situations.
- Anonymous
This sucks on twinblades. It looks awesome but you just fly by and barely hit them even if they’re against a wall. The only time the majority of the twinblades spinning attack lands most hits is when you run out of stamina and the the ash forces you to stay stationary while spinning.
- Anonymous
Role playing as a valkyrie and using this on a pike. The range is just nuts
- Anonymous
I'm upset you can't apply this to Scythes. I really wanted to do winged reaper/death angel attack :(

Works amazing with Black Steel Twinblade and Eleonora's Poleblade

You can use this on colossal swords, as if colossal bonks weren't cucked enough as is.

i'm using this while wearing mausoleum knight armor
Then the winged hussars truly arrived!

stacking the multihit talismans and using the twin blade attack leads to huge damage or almost any infusion, blood flame blade takes it to another level

Put it on Troll’s Golden Greatsword and become a sacred hellfire missile

I've tested a little and of what I can see damage of this ash is buffed by crucible armor.
More testing would needed to be sure.

Not gonna lie, it's not good as it is, this thing doesn't even lunge foward enough in my experience, just wait for some patches and try it again later
- Anonymous
I don't know about the damage but if you want to be cool and cringe at the same time then this is the gold!
- Anonymous
This aow is definitely slightly underwhelming in the damage department, but it’s cool as hell.
Says that it doesn’t work on colossal weapons, but as of now it works on the zwie and fire knight gs (the only ones I’ve tried)
Use on colossals to get best damage. Tried testing with the spear talisman, it should work as it’s a thrust, but I didn’t notice a damage increase.
High skill ceiling for dodging attacks in the flight animation which is fun. (Unlock for flight, re-lock for follow through)
Aow on twinblade procs multi-hit talismans, but tracking on the spin is pretty bad, and only somewhat consistent on enemies/bosses with big hit-boxes. If you infuse without affinity damage and buff with spells or consumables it gets better. (Bloodflame blade works well)

Been using it on my swordspear with 75 fth. Idk what yall complaining about this thing hits like a truck

Most people are dissatisfied with the lack of damage and hyper armor. I’m disappointed that you don’t fly into the air as high as the crucible knights do. Would have made up for its lack of poise if you could use the flight to dodge attacks.
- Anonymous
I put this on a twin blade & used it against an invader. Hit them twice for a few hundred while flying past them, ate an impaling thrust to the back during my recovery. It has a long windup, no hyperarmor, you can easily be knocked out of the air in all parts of it. I struggle to understand what they were thinking when they balanced this. It's sad.

I'm guessing time/resource constraints were contributing factors why this is an AoW instead of an Incant like most were hoping it would be.
If it were an Incant it would require setting motion values and possibly even adding new animations/assets because they'd have to account for EVERY weapon type in the game, and that was probably a time allocation they couldn't afford given how huge the in scope the DLC already is.
So I guess they went with the half measure and gave people somewhat what they wanted by limiting it to an AoW with only swords and twin blades as the only factoring weapon types.
- Anonymous
This looks DOPE as hell but as far as I can tell… its value basically ends there. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not terrible, it’s just not great. I saw a lot of people saying to put this on the Black Steel Twinblade and it makes sense because that weapon benefits greatly from a sacred infusion, buuuut, despite this AOW having a unique attack for twinblades, it’s really not that good…
This AOW is MUCH better on a spear or something of the sort, where all of your damage is focused into that one thrust, using it on a twinblade often causes you to just fly by an enemy and briefly nick them with the blade doing very very little damage, and even if you do land the majority of the move on a target, it’s still not justifiable damage for the long animation and poor recovery.
Basically, I don’t think this is very good, especially on twinblades which is unfortunate due to the unique attack. Would love to make this work on my Black Steel Twinblade but I really don’t think it’s happening, now I gotta go find a fitting spear to put it on.

I'm in it for the drip, fun, and cool animation. Def one of my fav, I first infused it into my Black Steel Twinblade. The Holy damage is nice. There is a nice move set for this. First I parried the poor enemies, riposted them, then I fly to them as they helplessly got up trying to fight back. I am holier than thou.

Remember that trailer where we saw this being used on the Dueling Shield?
Well, you can't apply these to Thrusting Shields. Lmao. I wonder why they decided to remove that, but it's very disappointing.
This feels pretty good in PVP, the long range makes it good for catching casters. It's easy to dodge if you try to use it in close range combat though

I love this skill visually, but unless I'm missing something, this is basically just a flashier but slower version of Piercing Fang.
If you can avoid attacks with the initial flying into the air, I haven't found any consistent way to do it, and it doesn't seem to do noticeably more damage or poise damage.
I love it thematically, but functionally it's just a worse version of Piercing Fang, which is a damn shame, as it looks absolutely awesome.
Maybe there's a niche use in dodging stomp attacks or something?

What to say, other than, its pretty dogsh*t. Don't even bother with the Twinblade. You spin like a top all flashy, but the damage is just crap. Better to just use a non-twinblade like weapon for that Crucible-Style Flight attack. But its just the Sword version, where they fly straight ahead, and they can't even hit multiple enemies. Not like Siluria or Ordovis' buddy, where they try slamming down into your location and make a nice "explosive" entrance.
Sorry, but what a waste. Needs a buff.

Should've been an incantation, seriously it being an Ash of War makes no sense and ruins the Crucible Knight cosplay by necessitating a weapon or shield which inevitably won't match the set.
- Anonymous
At first I was like: why is this not an incantation?
The longer you look at it though the more you realize that is the most weapon tied aspect of the crucible and since it changes based on your weapon type it makes sense to have as an infusion, it also opens it up to builds that don't have sufficient faith, which is great!

Honestly pretty dumb it's an aow and not an incantation like the rest.

It says "colossal weapons excepted", does this strictly mean colossal weapons or also colossal swords? Asking since they're considered 2 different weapon classes
Any way this AoW could pair well with Blackflame Blade on a Twinblade in PvE?
