I absolutely hate it when female characters spam this, it sounds so god dam annoying, please stop using this on female chacacters

Carian filigree, shard of Alexander, roar medallion, highland axe and use this until mom thinks Lizzo is in the basement with you trying to get her shoes on
- Anonymous
Ah, yes, the beasts who are famously dexterity-oriented. How exactly do you dexterously roar, anyway?
- Anonymous
Casters hate viable counters on melee builds.
Ngl it’s pure cancer if you build focus around high damage from this ash and spam it.
However, it’s a great and honest punish for status affect builds when your opponent retreats to pop a blossom.
IMHO this ash shouldnt scale with any stat and only get damage increases from the talismans and highland axe. Dexterity already has plenty of range options. Remove the scaling and you solve the potential for abuse
- Anonymous
What do you mean this scales with Dex? It's given to you by a Str/Fth NPC!
Absolutely toxic and oppressive in colosseum. You can't do anything if they choose to spam this against you. Even with endure, the damage is ridiculous. If they play passive/ have light roll, you're not doing anything. It has low fp cost, super fast startup, but like most skills also doesn't have enough stamina cost, so it's basically free.
- Anonymous
One note in favor of this aow is that it seems to apply the effect, though not the extra damage of greases and spell buffs which are applied to weapons. For example, if you have bloodflame blade applied to the weapon which has this aow equipped, it will proc bleed if used enough. It can also set the hands on fire as well.
- Anonymous
At RL1, storm blade does more damage even with Highland Axe + roar medallion. I'm not sure at what point this becomes a better option, if at all. Storm blade also has the added benefit of having weapon hit detection, further increasing the gap between the two skills.

I like putting this on my offhand. Easy access to a projectile for pulling mobs and can be set to bleed or frost for status builds.
- Anonymous
Ironically better for a Troll build than Troll's Roar, since this is considerably faster and is the same thing the actual enemy does when you're at a range. However, it only scales with weapon upgrades and Dex at the moment, meaning Troll's Golden Sword users (who generally have low Dex) won't see quite as much damage as one would like.

what if u (you) wanted to cast something but the melee build said UAAARGH
- Anonymous
Should have shared animation with trolls roar, considering that its issues are compounded by the fact it shares animation with harmless roars. Then the absurd pure physical damage it does can be justified on this spell.
- Anonymous
I was fighting the Alabaster Lord at Raya Lucaria Academy. He used his gravity well at the same time as I used this AOW and it hit his GW and canceled it out.
- Anonymous
This should be changed to a strength ash of war so heavy builds have some sort of range ability AND because Gurranq is the one who gives it whom uses strength.
Dexterity builds already have a ranged option, Thunderbolt ash of war which is already strong in itself, especially in the rain.
Quality has Stormblade which is now actually really good but is very limited to few weapons so it's a bit harder to use for a build than the others above.
Anyways I prefer Stormblade but as of right now it is bugged and once someone castas Golden Vow you will do 0 damage. So please do not do that if you know someone is using Stormblade, thanks =)!
- Anonymous
using this ash is a form of concession. you cannot beat the mage legitimately like everyone else, so you become a mage yourself. just because it does physical damage and scales with dex doesn't mean it's not a spell, it's a projectile that costs FP. you are a physical mage.

outshined in terms of speed and damage by storm blade except on a pure dex/roar build

Yeah, erdtree great shield can reflect sticky pest threads and even spectral lance but can’t reflect magical barking that can 4 shot most builds?
- Anonymous
Ok but why can’t erdtree great shield reflect this and stop these bull goat “mages.” Hurts my soul they gave the best spells and widest damage type choices to literally pure dex builds.

A few things about this ash.
It scales with dexterity and its damage is boosted by:
Highland axe (Can be in the offhand, and 2 do NOT stack)
Shard of Alexander/Warrior Jar Shard
Roar Medallion
Arrow's Reach Talisman (ALMOST removes any possible falloff damage. It is still possible to not do full damage at a distance but the target has to be at the very tail end of the spells range. In other words, its actually kind of hard to not do full damage every time.)
It also has strange effects with weapon buffs. The damage seems to not get boosted by buffs but some "secondary" effects will still get applied. For example, using fire grease and then roaring at one of the hand enemies will cause them to catch on fire even though the base damage is the same. Blackflame blade also applies the HP drain, which is kind of broken.
Confusingly, even though you can offhand the Highland axe for a bonus, it seems like it gets even more of a bonus when its on the axe itself. I tested with a +25 Highland axe, which gets B Dex scaling, and it did 1115 damage with 78 Dex. Both a +25 Duelist Greataxe and +25 parrying dagger, which have B and S Dex scaling respectively, only do 1070 damage with the Highland axe in my offhand and 974 without it in my offhand.

deal 540 damage with correct build. delete any mage build with only 3 roar.
- Anonymous
I'd say this is the most annoying ash of war to fight in a gank, but that award would have to go to honed bolt
- Anonymous
While this is very strong, it follows the same trend of strange itemization. Every roar in the game is Str based, and is even given by an npc that gives spells for str/fth builds. Yet, this one is Dex.... Yes, you can change the affinity, but the actual damage it deals scales off of Dex.
Meaning a keen weapon will do much more damage with it.
- Anonymous
I'll be honest, I just like using this to spam character shouts.
The range can be buffed with the Arrow's Reach talisman but Arrow's Sting has no effect.
- Anonymous
No wonder mages only spam glintstone pebble, slicer, or bestial sling/catch flame. Anything slower and a pure melee tank can run away and do more damage with beast roar and thunder bolt without any sacrifices to armor/vigor. If melee builds get the most damaging, spammiest spells then mages need to use the fastest, safest spells that can’t be punished.
- Anonymous
If you like this ash but don’t like being obnoxious, use an off hand cross bow. You can also apply status easily thru triple crossbow. If mages specifically are your problem, 10 fth minimum for fortification buffs which apply easily in combat. If you dive into them, the mage will run and then you cast fortification while they panic roll. Throwing knives interrupt 0 poise mages and do solid damage to unarmored opponents. And kukri blood loss is so satisfying, especially in mages. Kukri will also punish melee range misses you don’t want to commit to.

I can see in the comments its not a popular AoW in PVP. Does it have any use in PVE though? I'm also wondering if it was nerfed in the last patch? I tried it out on godrick soldiers and was doing less than 100 points of damage to them.
- Anonymous
It is literally so oppressive that it shuts down all mage counterplay, I don’t care what anybody says, this isn’t fun or fair in the slightest, because it completely negates most of the spells in the game, the amount of investment a mage character has to put into building their character and getting their spells versus one random guy who just slaps this on and completely throws all that out of the window, not exactly fair is it? It’s like stars of ruin, but that **** takes a load of fp, isn’t chain castable, has a noticeable tell, and can be stopped by anti magic stuff, this dosent have any of that, it can be pulled out at random, is super quick, takes barely any fp and is easily spammible.
- Anonymous
I love how everyone knows this is Op, unfair and unfun but refuse to have the conversation about nerfs because we enjoy griefing with it more.
- Anonymous
I die a little every time a duel devolves into... whatever this is. It’s always when someone is losing they switch to this, thunderbolt, RKS or flame strike. And you know exactly what weapon they put it on, I don’t even have to say.
- Anonymous
I think it should be noted that while it is ranged, this AoW deal a good bit less damage when at its max distance and increases as you get closer. I will do more testing but tested with a +25 giant crusher. At max distance i was doing 389 but when i got almost in the giant land squirts face i did 509. I did have the roar medallion on and other things but it might be that attacks like this deals less damage at greater distance.
- Anonymous
Bruh I have no idea why in a questline focused on getting incantations that mostly scale with Strength and Faith we get a Quality weapon with little bit of faith and then ash of war that scales with dex
Still a good AoW though
- Anonymous
Just spam this with regen and never actually fight in pvp. Your a mage but with bull goat armor and full vigor and a collosal sword. Not actually expensive when people don’t level vigor and there’s infinite blue chugs in a duel. If they have a shield it’s ok, they have to lower it to attack and you’ll win the trade anyways. There’s all sorts of ways to buff this. I call my dude “no fun allowed.” Use lightning strike for mixups or turtles.

Can confirm I did not receive this from fricking Gurranq despite giving him all the Deathroot (and being attacked by him after 4), Maliketh is dead and the sanctum empty.
He did kill me once, idk if that affects his gift giving.
Looking via my inventory.
Quite frustrated by this loss, any advice on if I can somehow still get it would be hugely appreciated

I'm on a strength build running the guts GS. I put this on a hidden +24 Cestus and got better damage with keen. Hits for about 500 on aware enemies in PvE, about 250 to 300 on most players. Comes out fast - fast enough to hot swap and stop a player trying to get rotten breath or another slow, high damage spell off. Great for catching rolls, trading with fast spells especially if your opponent is nearly dead, and generally interrupting anything that takes time.
- Anonymous
Incredibly disappointed I can’t reflect this with erdtree great shield.
- Anonymous
can we talk about why this is a keen aow and not heavy, like this and the beastclaw hammer scaling with dex, come on b team
- Anonymous
Needs a major nerf. Anyone defending this is pretty much just making the same kinds of excuses people who abuse bloodhound step are. This ash of war and many others need significant rebalancing.

Im not sure I understand. So what I've heard, it scales off raw damage, your keen attribute, and your scaling. My question is, will the actual roar attack scale off of strength if I give a weapon Heavy affinity with this? If not, that makes no sense whatsoever, considering the fact that its given by Gurranq, whos whole thing is throwing rocks and giving strength related items.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Why is this a keen ash of war? Everything else Gurranq gives you is str/faith, so if your running a build that utilizes the rewards gurranq gives you this will do a lot less damage because it scales mostly off dex. This has to be a mistake right?
- Anonymous
Solid damage on a dex or quality build, and you can slap on roar medallion/alexander shard to further boost it. Basically replaces bows in my run, except in very specific situations where I need more range (cheese, farm, etc).
Fun for pressuring in pvp, since it knocks players out of the air and stops skills/spells. Unfortunately, the projectile is easily sidestepped by those who predict it and the cast time is mediocre with no stat or item to improve it.
- Anonymous
So I started using this in pvp. It’s broken. Absolutely does not belong in this game. I shut down mages and bow builds and out damage them anyways with a bat screech. I used to use the arbalest but this ash makes crossbows obsolete. The worst thing about this ash tho... is that it’s just not fun. The first few times are funny but it gets boring. Also mages are supposed to have fun too. If they’re not running stars of ruin why should I be the no-fun-allowed build. I’m basically a disguise mage without any drawbacks. Had to share my guilt.

This is truly a weird AoW. It scales off three things: The actual Keen attribute itself (not just the letter grade), the Dex scaling of the weapon (the letter grade), and the AR of the weapon (least impactful). I was able to deal more damage with a +25 Keen Great Knife that has S scaling Dex than any other high AR weapon of any other affinity. Only high AR Keen weapons can equal or /barely/ surpass it.
The Guts GS for instance, had well over double the AR with a Quality infusion with 80/80 Str/Dex, but did less damage than the Keen Great Knife. But as soon as you use Keen on the Guts GS which gave it a B Dex scaling (which the Quality infusion also gave oddly enough, but I assume was a low B), it did /slightly/ more damage than the Keen Great Knife. The highest damage I was able to find was on a +25 Keen Guardian Swordspear, dealing about 100 more damage with the AoW with an A scaling in Dex, but had more than 300 AR than the Great Knife.
It's safe to say Keen/Dex is by far the largest component to the damage, but you can't rule out AR entirely as it will play a part at higher levels with the Keen infusion despite having one less letter grade. But as a side weapon to spam the AoW with light weight for min/max damage, S scaling daggers seem to be the best.
- Anonymous
In case anyone wasn't aware, attack type ashes of war like this (I know it's a projectile) deal more damage if they are used with the infusion that they are based on.
Can someone tell me, why in the hell is this a keen ash of war? Every other beast reward from Gurranq is strength/faith, every other roar ability is heavy but if I use this on a heavy infused weapon it'll do less damage at the same stats than a keen infused.
After personal testing with 50str/50dex, the heavy infused version of this skill dealt 366 damage, the keen infused on the same weapon dealt 575. Both at the same distance (the damage scales with distance).
I feel like this was a mistake.
- Anonymous
why does this only work with melee weapons? would be nice to have as a semi-aoe for bows
- Anonymous
enchanting your weapon with the "frozen armament" spell doesn't add frost buildup to the roar, and neither does the frost affinity infusion.
- Anonymous
I’ve been running around at level 65 doing pve/pvp with this equipped on a whip having a blast. Shard of Alexander+ ritual sword talisman+blue dancer charm
It hits pretty hard for how little fp it uses
- Anonymous
Almost unreasonably good ranged ash of war for really no fp, stat, speed, or range drawback at all. Always be looking for it in PvP.
- Anonymous
After playing around shouting at people, I found that this ash of war has damage drop off at longer ranges. This is however mitigated by the arrow's reach talisman.

Just completed an entire playthrough using only this Ash of War once I got it. Viable, fun. Definitely high consistent cheap damage. I can feel it fading into NG+s though. It's really starting to struggle in NG+++. Then again, I'm mediocre.

Fun fact, if you put an armement on your weapon, like say bloodflame, the roar will build that up on enemy (aka can bleen from afar) black flames enemy too

Ash of War scales off weapon level (not damage) and attribute scaling that's the same as the default one. I had two different +25 heavy greatswords and they dealt 488 damage. Both did 501 with a +5 dex talisman but still heavy meaning the weapons still had no dex scaling. When I used a keen affinity I dealt 596 damage including the talisman.
A keen +25 Uchikatana and Giant Crusher has an A dex scaling and both did 596 despite the Giant Crusher having a far higher damage number. I used the talisman here too.
I've tried the Urumi with keen, it deal 596 despite the S scaling in dex, with heavy it went down to 431.
To get the most out of this AoW you will want a main hand keen highland axe at +25. I dealt 656 damage. I've tested all this with 22-27 dex.
Dex has both thunderbolt and this AoW for range. We should report it so the devs can at least change it to quality but preferably changes this to str due to Gurranq giving all other str/faith scaling items.

I dont get why would it keen the entire gimmick is all beast spells
Get stronger by Str so you would want to run a srt wepon so why not give it heavy

Criminally underrated WA.
It's basically the less cheesy version of Moonveil WA. Has more range, has aoe, is relatively cheap, pulls out quick (which is great for super slow weaps), good utility, just plain reliable all around. Not gonna beat a boss by itself but it's a good/safe option for chipping their sliver of health away :P

looks like it not scales with str at all, only dex. checked with giant crusher +23 with 66 str and 15 dex. damage results- keen>quality>heavy
Extremely happy with this weapon art - basically carried an entire playthrough. Although it may seem like the Highland Ax is the obvious option for it, remember that you just have to have it equipped to get the effect, so you can off hand the axe and still get the full buff.
I really enjoyed it with the Raptor Talons: It seemed to fill in a lot of the gaps in the close range claw moveset, particularly against flying enemies. In addition, claws are pretty much useless when one handed, so its a good way to keep a ranged option on call at all times to punish moves you might not otherwise be able to target
Fun and strong - my favorite combo
- Anonymous
Very good for pvp even without any items for it, counters ranged attacks very well on my strength build rn. They'll either give up and try to fight you melee, keep getting hit by it, or waste all their focus points trying to use something faster like sling or lightning bolt.

Boosted by Roar/Breath Talisman, Highlander axe (stacks if you hold two), general physical damage boosters like "Flame Grant Me Strength" or Braggart's Roar ash of war, the weapon level of the weapon you put this on (Does not include weapon's actual scalings into account. IE, an axe with 9999 AR will still do the same damage as a sword with 1 AR if they're both +25 upgrade level), effects that boost ashes of war/skill damage such as Alexander's Jar Shard. It has a small amount of tracking, but not as much as the enemies who actually use this ability in game. It can hit multiple enemies as an area of effect attack but stops on hitting terrain or the first enemy hit. Deals non-specific physical damage and damage taken by it is lowered by overall physical defense stat, not a specific one like slashing or striking.
Using Fire Grant Me Strength, Braggart's Roar, two Highlander Axes equipped, Alexander's Jar Shard, Roar Talisman, Dancer's Talisman, Ritual Sword Talisman, and having one of the Highlander Axes be +25 leads to the best possible damage reaching just under or over 1500 damage per roar based on enemy defense. Considering it's a very fast attack with little recovery time, it could be worth doing all this to max it out if you want to run a 'roar' style build.

The scaling on this seems odd, that or I don't grasp how scaling on Ash's actually work.
Have both the Highland Axe & Roar Medallion that boost the Beast's Roar dmg. I took the Highland's to +4 initially and was getting 200dmg shouts on guards at the Gatefront Ruins. So I decided to test it on other higher base dmg weapons or better Dex scaling weapons (since this roar is Keen) to try and get better dmg per roar and a +4 Zweihander as well as a +4 Urumi both gave the exact same 200 dmg shouts (with Highland in the OH to get it's buff effect).
So I'm puzzled here as it doesn't seem to increase with weapon base dmg nor scaling dmg and only off of weapon upgrade level + other dmg boosting sources like buffs

Fast cheap ranged mild DMG.. good for chip DMG and head shots PvE.. Really shines in PvP though. I power stance 2 GS and learned the hard way some spells have to many multi hits and to much tracking to avoid all the DMG. This became my off hands wep art... I see a caster I two hand it and reactively hit L2 while I close the gap, works wonders and really is the best off hand ash I found
- Anonymous
Does anyone know if the Talisman that improves breaths and roars works on this?
- Anonymous
Especially deadly against ancient dragons, as they take much more headshot damage and often don't move much when they're far from you, while this beauty has fast use, fast travel time and very long range. Live out your skyrim fantasies.
In PvP it can be used to reactively punish enemies using distance to cast or drink etc. For PvE, it allows you to effectively extend your attacks to range, at the cost of FP. Many bosses have some sort of charging or disengaging move; after they stop briefly, you can shout them once or twice before they come close again.
The only downside is how easy it is to strafe sideways, meaning you don't want to use it when you and enemy player are both at neutral, doing nothing else.
I tried using this with blackflame blade and it applied the dot on hit. Does anyone know if it also causes bleed buildup? I tried to test it but was unable to proc the bleed.
- Anonymous
In PvE, has very poor stagger and OK damage. Very quick to use, decent FP cost if not spammed. It's the poor man's ranged attack, but it gets the job done if you need a ranged attack more than another weapon art. Available to use on any melee weapon, making it super versatile.

Mine does not shoot out a wave/projectile like in the image/description. It's more like a mini Wrath of The Gods around my character. Bugged?

Watch out using this in the room with Gurranq, I was facing away from him and it still aggro’d him. Luckily I had the item needed for Absolution in my inventory. It’s east of the Church of Vows, sold by a merchant, if anyone has the same problem I did

Absolutely amazing in pvp. I have been jumping between a bunch of different ashes of war to try and find one that best work against other players, and I found that you are able to trivialize a handful of different attacks that you normally must respect the distance of. For starters, as more and more people realize that Scarlet Rot is very strong strong, more people will use the rotting dragon head spell. This weapon art is so fast, the you can immediately kick them out of their animation. Someone spamming Malenia's weapon art? Stand back and delete them. Rivers of Blood weapon art spam? Immediate punish. While fighting in neutral it isn't that good, but any time they try to push for the offensive, you can turn it around 100% of the time.

Do all the incantations from thus guy scale off strength and faith or just faith? I know the talisman made for these scale off strength but I don't plan on using that one.

Ok for pve if you don't have mid to long range option.
Very good for pvp as a heal punish, spell punish, ashes of war spam punish, roll catch and chasing tool with it cast time and projectile speed, also the hitbox is actually bigger then it seems making it still viable at longer range.
