I bet the Numen are born directly from the crucible and that this text is lying. Numen is probably the name of the city that was probably founded near the crucible, probably in the shadowlands of the dlc (in a cave, deep down is my guess). Normally no item that speaks the 100% truth uses phrases like "it is said" because that means that most ppl are convinced of this story, not that the story is true. Radagon and the crucible knights could be male numen while Marika and the black knife assassins are female numen. No item talks about male Numen, i wonder why, i bet there were some of them. The assassins are exclusively women and the knights exclusively men, all of these 2 groups seem to be the same mute warrior type folk and have connections to Marika and Radagon respectively.

      • I’ve not seen it mentioned elsewhere but the Númenóreans of The Lord of the Rings are also “long lived” humans from another land of higher nobility.

As mentioned in the 17 Dec comment this could just be Tolkien taking from the Latin Numen but still the parallel there is interesting

The joke is that the ants have been eating Numen, who lived in the Eternal Cities. Same with rats and humans above ground. They've been making the same joke since Dark Souls as a poster below me pointed out,

There is also one on a corpse at Miquella's Haligtree right before the ladder that takes you to the "Haligtree Town" site of grace

            • Anonymous

So these are the runes you get from killing a Numen which is Marika's "Species" and we find a bunch of them in the egg sacs of ants

Picked up the one in Mohgwyn on my way to the bird farm bonfire and ended up with a stack of 99 somehow. Netted a cool 1.3 mil runes

These are so particular, you only really get them from ants and their pretty much the only uniquely named solid rune. Plus theres the matter of Numens being a selectable option during char creation (specifcally when your selecting a body template) and its just man wheres vaati when ya need him

There's another one not listed above. It's in the Haligtree Canopy just before you get to the ladder leading to the Haligtree Town site of grace, on the big branch you run down while getting holy bubbles shot at you from above.

there's a 6th ant queen that drops a numen's rune you can find in the deeproot depth , its close to the "Root-Facing Cliffs" grace , you can find this grace behind a hidden wall behind a chest in the area where you find the three fingers at the end of hyetta's questline.
I'm still on my first playthrough and I have a total of 11 numen's runes

Not sure if anyone has said this, but I have a funny feeling maybe these have an impact if you collect a certain amount in your inventory, similar to souls of giants in ds2.

I found one either just northeast or a bit south of the Dynasty Mausoleum Entrance grace in the underground area you unlock from the bloody fingers quest

So Queen Marika is actually a giant ant?

Also found in deeproots in a cave accessed by climbing roots dropped multiple 'ant queens', that's also where you get the elden stars sorcery

                                • Anonymous

The ants in the cave by the first bonfire in the deep root depths that have the big sacs each drop one for a total of five
