Commander O'Neil is a Great Enemy Boss in Elden Ring. Commander O'Neil is a human who wields a halberd with a battle standard and summons aid from ghostly warriors. He can be found at the heart of the Swamp of Aeonia in eastern Caelid. This is an optional boss as players are not required to defeat him in order to advance in Elden Ring, but he provides useful items and Runes upon defeat.

Commander Niall is another variant of this boss.

Even after his lord was fled, Commander O'Neil continued to brandish his flag in the devastation of the rot-eaten field of battle, the sole veteran who remembers that battle with pride.

Elden Ring Commander O'Neil Boss

  • This is an optional boss, but is required to complete Gowry's and Millicent's quests
  • At the beginning of the fight, O'Neil summon five Exile Soldier spirits. At the beginning of Phase 2, he summons three additional Large Exile Soldier spirits. These spirits won't be resummoned once kiled.
  • Closest Site of Grace: Inner Aeonia
  • Multiplayer is allowed for this boss
  • You can summon Spirit Ashes for this boss
  • NPC Summons: Polyanna, Adopted Daughter. Progress Gowry's quest until he asks for the Unalloyed Gold Needle and her summon sign will appear near the Inner Aeonia Site of Grace.

Elden Ring Commander O'Neil Location

Negations (or Absorptions)

The negation numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example, if a negation is 60, 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% will be negated. Bigger number = less damage. A negation of 100 means no damage goes through, and a negation of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.

Resistances

The resistance numbers are the buildup amount to trigger it. For example, if a resistance is 100 you must deal 100 points of the given buildup to trigger it. Note that these go down over time, and increase each time the effect procs. The values after the "/"s indicate the increased resistances after each successive proc.

Elden Ring Commander O'Neil Boss Guide

Commander O'Neil Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Commander O'Neil:

  • Use any tanky Spirit Ash Summons, as they will likely draw the most attention from the boss and his allies.
  • Use the Rock Sling Spell, which can easily be obtained in the nearby ruins.
  • Bring equipment inflicting Frostbite or/and Hemorrhage.
  • Sneak up to O'Neil, which can be done with ease. This allows to perform few attacks before he even try to summon.
  • Riding Torrent during this fight is recommended to avoid Scarlet Rot build up
  • You can sneak up behind him and cast poison mist
  • O'Neil cannot jump, so you can summon Latenna or use ranged bows on a tree branch to whittle him down. His crossbow summons in phase 1 will knock Latenna off the branch however, and his phase 2 summons can kill her. It is also possible for her to slowly inch forward and fall down within reach of O'Neil.

Melee Users

Direct Melee confrontation is possible, but it's much easier completing this fight on horseback. Employing a hit and run strategy will allow you to outrun Commander O'Neil's counter attacks as well as any attacks from his minions. This also has the added benefit of allowing you to travel outside the arena and avoid the scarlet rot build-up.

Killing summoned Exile Crossbowmen and Exile Axe Soldiers is straightforward from horseback and can be performed without engaging with Commander O'Neil. Doing so will minimize the potential of being staggered or blindsided while attacking O'Neil and will simplify the fight. He will summon a second group of summons wielding axes during his second phase. Although they lack range, they will move towards you aggressively and will do more damage than the first group. However, they can also be dealt with relatively quickly on horseback.

If you want to beat him on foot, it is also doable, since most of his attacks are easily parryable. You just have to watch out for the summons and the Rot Storm.

You can kite him out to the nearby Site of Grace, then kite him through the Scarlet Rot geysers to damage him; he needs to be walking through the geyser when it erupts to take damage, the large pool of Scarlet Rot doesn't affect him.  He will teleport back to the starting point for his second phase, and can be kited out to the geysers again.  The second group of summons will likely follow him out, and that's a good time to use your Spirits to eliminate the summons.

Magic and Ranged Users

Magic users with long-ranged spells can easily outrange Commander O'Neil by fighting on horseback, trivializing the fight. He is a slow-moving boss that lumbers across the battlefield and makes no real effort to close the distance. Just make sure to clear his minions out whenever he summons them to avoid getting overwhelmed.

Commander O'Neil Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Call Spirits - Exile Crossbowmen Commander O'Neil will summon 5 Exile Crossbowmen to provide fire support at the beginning of the battle. Each has roughly 430 health. First, kite Commander O'Neil away from the archers while dodging or blocking their shots. Take the minions out before refocusing on the commander.
Call Spirits - Exile Greataxe Soldiers Commander O'Neil will summon 3 Exile Axe Soldiers when he drops to 40% health. Each soldier has roughly 500 health. The axe soldiers move faster than Commander O'Neil does. Keep away from Commander O'Neil as you deal with the axe men, while dodging out when he gets within striking distance.
Glory, Brave Knights! - Offensive Commander O'Neil will swing his Commander's Standard around in the air and exhort his summons to fight on, boosting their attack speed. This buff takes the form of a little red mist around the enemies, indicating heightened offensive capacity. Commander O'Neil does not do this attack when he has no summons. Additionally, Commander O'Neil is vulnerable to attack when he enters this animation, so potentially this can prove to be a good opportunity for damage.
Glory, Brave Knights! - Defensive Commander O'Neil will swing his Commander's Standard around in the air and exhorts his summons to fight defensively, boosting their resilience and giving them additional health. This buff manifests as a white glowing circle on enemies, and grants them additional resilience to damage as well as small amount of bonus health. Commander O'Neil does not do this attack when he has no summons. Additionally, Commander O'Neil is vulnerable to attack when he enters this animation, so potentially this can prove to be a good opportunity for damage.
Rotting Whirlwind Commander O'Neil will kneel, and the wind around him will begin to blow harder as it forms a large area of effect around him. Then, he will swing his standard three times, doing massive damage to anything still inside his area of effect and building up huge amounts of Scarlet Rot, practically guaranteeing a proc. This attack takes about 4 seconds to come out, and if you're on horseback it's very easy to escape.
Spearing Attack Commander O'Neil has a range of long-ranged attacks that can go from thrusts to slashes, he can mix these up from time to time and can sometimes chain it to the move Rotting Winds. You can easily dodge roll away from any of the spear attacks. You can also try to parry these attacks as he swings his spear very slowly.

Either y'all are just a bunch of liars, or somewhere along the lines, they patched all the ways to cheese this mother****er, because I literally cannot beat him. Kill his goons? I die. Get on the branches? I die.
'Oh, you can proc bleed on him!' NOPE, because I've tried more than a few times, landed a slew of hits, and he just doesn't bleed.
'Oh, you can poison him!' NOPE, tried that too. Same result.
'Oh, he's weak to piercing attacks!', okay, sure, let's try using my upgraded piercing weapons, OH WAIT HE TAKES LESS DAMAGE FROM THEM BECAUSE **** YOU THAT'S WHY

I summoned the Spirit Jellyfish to distract him and his summoned lackeys while I bonked him to death with the Giant Crusher

        • Anonymous

Literally killed this guy but constantly circling him clockwise and using the marionette soldier ashes... they just kept pummelling him with arrows while I kept hitting him after every attack lol

          • Anonymous

you can also summon Latenna, then just kite him around and smash his mobs, he'll die eventually, the girl hit hard.

            • Anonymous

Sad, everyone here just discussing how to best cheese him. Honestly, it's just as simple to get on Torrent, circle him while taking out all of the summons and then go to town. As Max0r said: without the summons, his moves are Amish accessible; you could build a barn around him before he does something.

              • Anonymous

Alright if it was just this guy it'd be easy to chalk it up as a coincidence, O'Neil is a common Irish last name after all, but the fact that the other near-identical boss is named Niall proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Miyazaki is a Sleepycabin/Oneyplays fan.

                • Anonymous

I don't know why but I always laugh when I see his name because it kinda stands out compared to all the other bosses. Usually the Souls games have bosses with names like CANTANCEROUS DREADWYRM, KWANZA KNIGHT EYOBEL or ARCHIBALD, PATRIARCH OF THE BLACK CANDLELABRA. And then here's some guy named Commander O'Neil. What's next? Colonel McGregor? Captain Doherty? Major Flanagan? General Smith?

                  • Anonymous

So I just discovered a cheese for this guy, not sure if anyone else has done this.

From the Inner Aeonia site of grace, draw him outside his arena with a bow. While staying on Torrent, try to lure him into the rot plumes that explode. He won't proc rot from the lake, but maybe you can kill him faster with poison. It only took maybe 5-6 hits from the explosions from rot plumes to down him! He'll be taking damage as they build up as well. Yes, he'll be chasing you but only at walking speed so no worries, just keep guiding him to where the explosions happen.

This made my Lv1 Wretch very happy. Hopefully it makes yours happy as well!

bruh i actually went git gud to solo him mixing dodging and tanking with greatshield, waiting opportunity to strike back

Absolutely not immune to posion. In fact, it's the easiest way to cheese him since posion mist doesn't aggro enemies. Provided you're willing to sit still for 15 minutes you can jumpstart Millicent's questline without fighting this guy.

                        • Anonymous

For the first phase, take out the crossbowmen and spam status effects on him. Use Torrent to double jump onto any of the roots. His greataxe goon squad will follow you in a single file while he's stuck below. From there, just exhaust your entire supply of arrows/bolts and he's helpless.

This boss would have been so fun if they hadn't decided to give him a million adds that do range attacks on you the whole time.

                            • Anonymous

Easy as hell, but the attacks are SO slow that it somehow messes me up...

I need to erase dark souls 3 from my memory.

I absolutely LOVE this boss, mostly due to how easy he and his summons are to parry. Really satisfying constantly parrying him

He is definitely not immune to poison. You can actually sneak up behind him and use poison mist to cheese him to death.

The tarnished approaches the heart of the swamp, fending off the cleanrot knights.
O’Neil, the battle hardened warrior, hears the nearby clashing of weapons.
                                    He does not run.
He knows that this is his time to bring glory to his name once again.
The metal clanging ceases, and the tarnished comes into view.
                                    He is ready.
With a fire in his eyes and energy coursing through his veins, he lets out his signature battle cry.
                                    “It’s rottin’ time!”

It's so easy to trivialize this fight. Right in front of the Summoning Pool there is a stone/root wall you can climb and bow him to death. The only danger are his soldiers with their crossbows, but you can get rid of them first by circling around on horse and smacking them with some long weapon - after their death, hop on high, bow and the fight is done.

Polyanna's summon sign appeared for me for this fight before ever interacting with Gowry, Millicent or even visiting Sellia
I already beat Radahn, though I doubt that's related

DAE wonder how many people died in the shattering? This whole arena is carpeted with corpses and bones - you can see >100 bodies just looking down at the ground, and who knows how deep they go. Some of the corpse piles are huge in places like Castle Morne, the Ainsel River, the wastes where Radahn is, to say nothing of Rykard's chamber. What are we talking here? Millions? Billions?

                                          • very niche info but if you feel like fighting him barehanded (with parries) you can optimize your damage by queueing right trigger attacks immediately after landing a parry (will hit him square in the head for ~5 damage), and then landing a right bumper as O'Neil recovers/before parrying him again

I suppose he was her second in command during the campaign, just as Radahn had Jerren.

You can cheese the **** out of this guy using the Rot Geisers near the site of grace. Stay on torrent, taunt him to follow you until he gets on the geyser, literally circle around him while he takes massive damage. When he summons the big guys for second phase, summon as well and keep them distracted, focus on him.
Didn't need to hit him myself once. Good job From.

                                                                  I used glintstone pebble.

                                                                  • Anonymous

The Ó prefix means 'descendant of', firstborn sons are named for their paternal grandfather, and in such cases the original name mutates a bit (Niall -> Neil).

                                                                    • Anonymous

Takes several casts and some waiting to kill him but you're absolutely safe through all of it.

                                                                      • Anonymous

If you're a mage, you can just stand on the root at the edge of the arena and engage with Loretta's Greatbow. He will go towards you but can literally not hit you with any of his attacks. Only the summons can spam arrows on you but the damage is negligible. I just stood there and spammed Glintstone Icecrag. Hilariously easy and a major oversight in design I think. Would be better if he wasn't targetable from there.

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          • Anonymous

You don't need to progress Gowry's or Millicent's quest to have Polyanna available as an NPC summon. I just fought O'Neil and her golden summon sign was there, despite not having talked to Gowry nor Millicent before. O'Neil does gain a significant amount of health from summoning her though, which you can see by summoning her after damaging him a fair bit.

I don't think she's very helpful, though, because the real boss isn't O'Neil himself or his minions but the nigh-unplayable framerate in his arena. Thankfully the Poison Mist cheese only needs 12 FTH, which even the most pagan builds can achieve with some attribute-boosting equipment, if you cannot get past him otherwise.

                                                                            • Anonymous

In ParamID, O'Nial and O'Neil appear as Sol Knight. O'Nial means O'Neil's ancestor. When you examine their faces, you will see that O'Nial's face is more hollowed out.(Old). O'Neil and O'Nial wear the octopus Godwyn motif on their helmets (not to mention they wear the same outfit, they both have prosthetic feet). O'Neil is allied with the cleanrots and buffing each other, more or less everyone knows that. The other thing I tried was to turn on the cheat from the Cheat Engine and gather the O'Neil and Redmane soldiers to same place. As you guessed, the O'Neil and Redmane soldiers start attacking as soon as they see each other. I know this upsets those who love Malenia, but O'Neil serves Malenia. Based on the motif on their helmets, I think their first master might be Godwyn. Currently, Miquella/Malenia.

                                                                              • Fighting him in NG+ I took a closer look and he's literally the same boss as Castle Sol, fake leg and all, but with a different name and movesets... why so lazy FromSoft?

                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                  • Anonymous

I chesed him by crouching behind his back and used poison mist incantation- It gave me his halberd and some golden needle. Then I wanted to farm Cleanrot set in swamp but I was constantly invaded by MILICENT who was at that time still rotting in the church. Can somebody explain to me how this works? How can Milicent invade me with her fancy sword (both arms) and Malenia moveset when I didn't even started Gowrys nor Milicent quest? I know I shouldn't look for logic in quests in elden ring but wtf? Same with Dunk Eater, how can that abomination chill in roundtable hold when he's tied to the chair in sewers in Leyndell? Is it force projection? are they all "force users" like in star wars? I was prepared to kill her rotting sorry a** as soon as I'd see her in the church but in the end I felt sorry for that bit** so I wanted to give her that stupid needle so I can farm in swamp again.. nope... I had to go to gowry twice so that vermin repaired that needle, then go again to Milicent, cure her and after that I was finally free to play this game how I wanted.. Seriously, game is awesome but quests are so stupidly incomprehensible... Just be aware of this if you didn't already experienced yourself.. And one more thing: If you get invaded by her in the midle of the rotten swamp It will kick you off the horse- surrounded by 5 Cleanrot knights and atacked by lighter version of Malenia.. just "awesome"

                                                                                      • Anonymous

Just stay on torrent and you will be safe from the rot. If you stray too far he teleports back but can be lured again. His 1st phase summons stay in the arena, his 2nd phase summons will come after you but just avoid them and you should be fine

                                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                                          • Anonymous

I kited them both to the middle of the swamp and the ghosts couldn't keep up. Pollyanna was about to die after a while, and I notied Dung Eater +6 was on my belt and lit up ready to go. Sent my boy Dung Eater into the fray, used Flame Cleanse Me to stop rot I'd picked up, with Mighty Shots, Lorettas GB and Large Glinstone shards.

Tried to ride away again but couldn't... Millicent had just invaded

                                                                                                  • This fight is a complete joke. You can stay mounted the whole time and just pelt him from range. He's got no speed or any way to punish you for this. His summons do so little damage and can be avoided so easily that they might as well not even be there.

Why am I being downvoted? The fight really is trivial if you're mounted.

                                                                                                    • So I'm running around in this swamp right? popping the pimple slugs.. I jump on a branch...Boom..I see this guy. I'm thinking to myself "Well he looks like a Doo Doo Canoe, standing in his own little Septic Tank Arena."
I walk up to the guy in his Shoddy Porta Potty and tell him "It smells like an ass whooping in here!" He gets ticked and I guess he had a Scarlet Burrito, because the guy started breaking wind. Then his white sperm soldiers pop up and start to shoot at me. I tell him "Let's take this outside like men! Mano a Bozo!" So he follows me out of the Chipotle Enema he called home and twirls his little baton right? I pull out 2 Meteoric Ore Katanas and whack him in the head.. BONK! He drops to one knee, and I stab him in the face and kick him to the floor! He gets up pissed, and brings out some coneheads with a lotta moxy and axes. I roll past those clowns and use my katana's Gravitas to knock em around a bit. Easy peasy. I look the commander in the eye, and Ichimonji him 7 times. He's back on his knees again. He knows this is the end..I know it too. I put both my Space Katanas away and punch him to death..the manly manner manages to mangle his face into dust. He poofs.. I get another Needle peddler off the streets. All his white guys disappeared and a Red Headed Stepchild I forgot existed, comes running out of his Chili Ring of a home. That's how I saved Aeonia...

                                                                                                      • Ah, yes. I unintentionally triggered his fight, and then the person I'm supposed to be helping invaded me almost immediately, taking me off of my mount! Lovely!
