Mimic Tear (known as Stray Mimic Tear during fight at Hidden Path to the Haligtree) is a Boss in Elden Ring. This Elden Ring Mimic Tear Guide features boss locations, tips, strategies and videos on how to defeat the Mimic Tear easily, as well as boss stats and lore for the Mimic Tear.

The Mimic Tear is found in Nokron, Eternal City and the Hidden Path to the Haligtree. Its fight is a mirror match as the boss copies your equipment and appearance when fighting you. Mimic Tears are special kinds of Silver Tears that can completely mimic their opponent. They were created by the people of the Eternal Cities, and Mimic Tears in particular were created in an attempt to forge a lord.

This is an optional boss, as players don't need to defeat it in order to advance in Elden Ring. However, doing so yields useful Items and Runes. Take note of all the Weapons and Spells you have equipped when spawning the boss in - these are the exact same weapons and spells you'll find yourself faced against. With this in mind, it's possible to unequip all your equipment and spells before the fight starts to force the Mimic Tear to fight with its bare fists. Re-equipping them during the boss fight will not re-equip them for the Mimic Tear. It drops the Silver Tear Mask or Blackflame Monk Amon Ashes when defeated.

Bosses are unique and challenging Enemies that can be encountered all over the Lands Between. Great Enemy bosses can drop unique Spirit AshesWeaponsSpells, and other various Items.

A Mimic Tear can be summoned as a spirit for aid in battle by using the Mimic Tear Ashes.

Those of the Eternal City have created a special type of Silver Tear, capable of completely mimicking its opponent, along with any spells, skills and armaments they have.

  • Mimic Tear is a Great Enemy-class Boss

Elden Ring Mimic Tear Location

The Mimic Tear boss is encountered in multiple locations:

  1. Mimic Tear can be found behind a mist door to a temple ruin in Nokron, Eternal City. It doesn't attack immediately, but transforms when you approach the it in the middle of the ruin. See it on the Elden Ring Map Here.
  2. One is encountered as the Stray Mimic Tear in the secret catacombs under the Hidden Path to the Haligtree. See the location's page for details on how to reach the boss. Despite the slightly different name, this boss functions much the same way as the Mimic Tear. See it on the Elden Ring Map Here.

Mimic Tear Combat Information

  • Health: NG (??), NG+ (??), NG++ (8250), NG+3 (??), NG+4 (??), NG+5 (??), NG+6 (??), NG+7 (??)
  • Damage type: It depends (same applies to Status Effects)
  • Parriable: It depends on the weapon it uses.
  • With specific equipment it can perform a parry, use equipment or Ash of War.
  • It is possible to guard break Mimic Tear, what allows to perform a riposte.
  • Armor worn during entering boss fight arena affects the boss Absorption.
    • Example: Deaths poker dealt 161 damage to Mimic with Lionel Set (exluding armor)/Pumpkin helm and 244 to Mimic without any armor.
  • Can heal 1 time.
  • Can be backstabbed
  • Can't be poise broken, but can be staggered like any player in PvP.

Absorptions:

The absorption numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example if an absorption is 60. 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% is absorbed. Bigger number= less damage. An absorption of 100 means no damage goes through, and a resistance of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.

Resistances:

The resistance numbers is the buildup amount to trigger it. For example if a resistance is 100 you must deal 100 points of whatever aux buildup to trigger it. Note that these go down over time, and increase each time the effect procs.

Mimic Tear Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Mimic Tear:

  • Use the Lone Wolf Ashes Ash Summons or any Ashes if having difficulty
  • Keep in mind that whatever build and equipment you choose to proceed with during this encounter will be mirrored. This will include the Armor, Weapons, Consumables, and Spells you are actively using.
  • Unequip armors and weapons you have so the the Mimic will appear with nothing once you enter the arena, then after going through the yellow mist, you can start equipping your weapons and quickly make work of this boss fight.
  • Like any human encounter, Status Effects are very effective.

Melee Users

Strategy: You could unequip your main weapon and catalyst/staff, the boss will have only their fists to attack you with. Then, spam your strongest poise breaking attack or backstab him for maximum damage. The Mimic Tear will then only transform when you approach close enough. If in co-op, this means you can keep a distance while another player focuses on clearing it.

Without this method, this fight strategy will vary since the Mimic Tear is essentially a copy of you. You will have to keep in mind what your build is and fight according to your own weakness. Any healing items will also apply to the mimic tear so be mindful when distancing yourself as well.

Magic and Ranged Users

For Ranged Users, the strategy would be the same. If you're going in with Sorceries or Faith builds you can expect this boss to have the same. If you don't want to fight a boss with the same build as you, you will have to go in with a different set of equipped weapons before switching back.

Summon/Co-Op Strategy

The boss only transforms when the host gets within range of the boss while it's in its slime form. Therefore, by summoning a player, it's possible to cheese the boss. Summon a player into the game, go into the boss room, and do not go near the boss. Have the summoned player attack the boss while it's in slime form. The boss will have the normal health of a Silver Tear enemy, and will be much easier to kill. This method only works if the summon can 1-shot the boss while it's in slime form, but in this phase it has much lower HP. Note: It's possible to employ a similar strategy solo by 1-shotting the boss while staying out of it's range, using magic or some other means.

kinda bullshit that mimic tear as a boss is immune to death but not when you summon it ( yes i tested it with the mimic tear spirit ash ), dont know why you would remove the death immunity, most of the time your mimic tear wont even come across death status effects so i dont see how you would be able to take advantage of it....

I imagine that this would've been a cool battle, if it wasn't for mine spamming Frenzied Burst despite being in striking distance, tis a shame

          • Anonymous

If you use a combo of talismans that give you high damage bonuses, you can snipe the tear on the ground with the lion greatbow and radahn's spears and kill it before it can form.

            • Anonymous

Easiest boss in the game. Take off all weapons and magic staff. Equip a single melee weapon to your SECOND hand. Mimic tear won't effectively dual wield a weapon from the second hand - if you have no weapon in the first the Mimic Tear largely attacks with (a) its fists and (b) the special ashes ability on your second hand. That's all!

Its stats seem to scale off the player attributes. It had 6000 health when fought with my character with 2300 HP while it had 2000 or so health when fought with my character with no investment into vigour.

It also can’t effectively use the weapons you don’t have the required stats for, entered the boss arena with Death’s Poker without sufficient INT and the mimic couldn’t use the ash of war. The summon version works the exact same way, if you increase your health the summon’s health will be increased as well, same with the weapon damage and corresponding attribute.

Poor mimic tear. When I ran into it in Nokron, it tried casting spells with my +0 off-hand staff that I only had around for sniping enemies off perches with glintstone pebble. I felt a little bad while slicing it up with my actual weapon.

i cant believe i managed to die to the stray one, like I already knew what i was doing bc of the first one and i STILL died, in other words, i learned that +24 cleanrot knight sword with lightning infusion and high dex and ~30 for the magic stats does quite a bit of damage to myself

People summon help for this. I even saw someone take off their entire gear just so I could kill their naked mimic. Sometimes I can't believe this community. How pathetic can you be that you can't fight yourself? Beating your build is the ultimate confirmation that you know what you're doing. It should be a moment of pride. Instead people cheese even this fight. I can't even....

First time I came to this fight, and saw what was happening, that it was making a copy of me, I giggled at it for a solid minute after one-shotting the thing. All I could think of was... Oh, you poor, poor, misguided mimic... you just made the most unfortunate mistake; I die SO easily... every boss and most enemies in the game one-shot me if I make a mistake... I am REALLY, REALLY easy to kill... and trust me, I know all of the things that can get me killed really well. It was such an unfortunate experience for what might have been an otherwise interesting fight, but it was also hilarious.

I know it involved zero skill on my part and I don't usually cheese bosses but I made hard work of the stray mimic tear boss at the hidden path to the haligtree by not reading this wiki page first. It's obvious now but it didn't click with me I'd be fighting a mirror image boss with my armour, weapons, consumables and incantations. It didn't go well it took me four attempts and I didn't fancy all that again so I stripped everything from my equipment menu but I had to go back to the nokron eternal city grace because I'd forgotten the incantations. I crossed the fog with full FP and summoned Omen killer Rollo all I had to do then was keep Rollo between the mimic and myself, it was funny seeing it punch Rollo then get flattened by the overhead slam he does. So yeah, if you don't like or cant be bothered with either of these mimic bosses strip everything and let you spirit summons do the work.

It'd be really cool if there was like, a respawning Mimic Tear somewhere in the world as an infinite way to test out your own build

I know the overall concept of the boss is simple, but I absolutely love the idea of this. You have to beat your own build, it's super cool to me, however basic it is. What would've been cooler is if it had the same number of flasks as you or something as well.

Let's be honest now. I bet most of y'all let your Mimic Tear Ash +10 solo the Stray Mimic Tear in Haligtree, just to watch the fight.

Really creative fight, and the most fun I have had. I had my Guardian Swordspear for the fight and the boss used attacks and combos I didnt even know the weapon had. Dodging my own Rotten Breath, Tail, Dragonclaw and Dragonmaw was exhilarating.

Probably the funniest part is that I had Fire Cleanse Me equipped as well. If I had waited long enough, he would have died by himself for using it.

Glad I can do (Stray) Mimic Tear vs Mimic Tear (Ash) without going to NG+. Mimics, prepare for shenanigans!

This fight showed how bad the AI is compared to me, I mean, full radahn, bloodhound fang, jellyfish shield and a bunch of good incantations and couldn't beat me, also turned out to be the easiest fight yet, didn't have to use my ashes... Also, here's a tip for those who want to fight it the chad way: if you have a shield, pressure it, the AI will auto counter and leaves it VERY open. Though putting on pressure in general kinda screws the boss since it likes to switch weapons a lot.

                                        • Getting naked and unequipping all weapons before the mimic copies you is hilarious. You just fight a completely helpless naked version of yourself. It punched me and did literally 0 damage lol.

The last tip for the boss fight strategy should be updated: the Mimic Tear copies your character right before transforming, not after you traverse the golden fog.
If you want to make the boss fight easy, you have to initiate it, and then start equipping your gear as fast as you can, while your ashes or summons shift the mimics attention away from you.

Jesus, the only thing this fight taught me is how busted my build would be if I could somehow make it fast roll

                                              • Anonymous

I loved the "oh, f*ck" moment this boss gave me when it started filling the whole arena with rotten dragon breath. The dragonclaw slams were scary af too. Most fun fight in the game so far. I just wish it had more flasks, because it's easy when you have a massive health advantage.

Does anybody else find this fight to be the hardest in the game? With no summons, that is. I mean, it's you vs...you!

                                                  • Anonymous

I don't know if i should be proud that my Mimic is brutally one-shot me and don't take even a scratch from my hits:D

                                                    • Anonymous

Yeah go in naked if you want an easy fight but it's better to go in fully decked out and see if you can do it. This is one boss in elden ring who can give a decent challenge and not be cheap. Really denying yourself here not going full force.

                                                      • Anonymous

Made a tank build, Mimic two handed my weapon and proceeded to do almost the entire fight without using the shield.
I know this mimic can teach new people how to use their build better (I am still new to Elden ring) but not using my shield was definitely not the way to use my build

                                                        • Anonymous

I was hyped to play against myself, awesome stuff.

However the fight was really, really easy. I can see how it’s tough to make the AI good at being aggressive and efficient when playing as any character combination.

But he only had one flask! He should have 12 like me.

He didn’t use my ash of war. He seemed to have very little stamina because I broke his guard again and again. He generally just didn’t attack or roll very much.

I am just curious why this ended up to be a pretty easy boss, when there are quite a few tough bosses.

                                                          —-

Also, I never found this place. Wondered why—it’s because my game crashes after the fight with radahn so I didn’t see the meteor.

And another note is the mimic tear site of grace was slightly glitched for me. I could only touch grace a couple feet back from the actual grace, and he rests a couple feet away from it too

Wait aren’t it’s stats based on you? How do have numbers for resistances and stuff? Shouldn’t they be different for everyone?

                                                            • Anonymous

                                                              How to cheese:
Go remove all of your equipment once you start the fight. Once mimic shows up, equip all of your stuff again. Mimic is now naked and you can easily beat it.

                                                              • Anonymous

I think it has more health and less damage than you, sadly.
I have a one hit build, so when he popped royal knight determination I was worried, but it didn't even empty half of my health... oh well.
One of the easiest boss fight in the game (hum)

Power stancing Dark Moon Greatsword and a Cold infused Iron Greatsword while wearing Veteran's Set. One wrong step and I got legit 1-shot by a dual wield jump attack from the boss. It's like I'm made of paper!

                                                                  • Anonymous

The only thing I got from this 1-try fight was that my build hits like pinpricks. How the hell did I beat all those giant bosses again?

                                                                    • Anonymous

I killed it with a Ice Pot, procced Frostbite and it took away the last 10% of its health. Not immune to Frostbite.

                                                                      • Anonymous

They should make it so people can re-fight this boss infinite times without ng+. Like, an evergoal of the mimic tear spawns in the arena once you beat it, and you can infinitely replay it

                                                                        • Anonymous

One of the most memorable and enjoyable boss fights in the game, it's not difficult but the idea behind it is a TON of fun. So much better than most of the post-Leyndell bosses, the realization that it copied me was a "holy s**t" moment for sure.

                                                                          • Anonymous

Normally I enjoy faster bosses that can fold you in half like a tortilla over the normal enemy bosses, but this one was astounding. Even though it's just a normal enemy the idea is truly amazing. Fighting the Mimic Tear is not only an experience, but it can help you learn your weaknesses. Easily in my top 5 favorites, wish you could fight it more though.

                                                                            • Anonymous

Best way to fight this bad boy is too let him spawn with your armour, weapon, spells, etc and then equip your starting class gear (makes it look like your fightning your first boss!)

                                                                              • Anonymous

If you want to respect a mimic tear battle for a challenge, equip your shield with golden parry or carian retaliation. This makes them a bit harder and more fun to fight as a parry player myself.

                                                                                • Anonymous

Unequip your weapons before going into the fight and then summon your own mimic. Watching the two mimics punching each other is priceless.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

I’m literally a glass cannon mage. Every boss one shots me. Apply that to this when I summon level 10 soldiers. Lmao

                                                                                    • Anonymous

I get how its an easy boss to cheese but you have to admit that fighting yourself in your best build cam be kind of fun. Unless your a mage since it will just keep slinging random spells.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

Random little tidbit: If you don't give the Mimic Tear any weapons and any offensive consumables to work with, it will actually occasionally throw Ruin Fragments after you, even though you don't have them equipped. I don't know if it still does that if it has a weapon but no consumables, but if you give it consumables (such as throwing knives) then it will no longer make use of the fragments.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

One interesting note is that if the tear can't attack e.g giving two bows, it starts throwing ruin fragments instead. It is also unaffected by weight at least in terms of heavy/overloaded

                                                                                          • Anonymous
