Ulcerated Tree Spirit is a Boss in Elden Ring. Ulcerated Tree Spirit is a snake-like creature with the appearance of a tree, covered in swelling red ulcers. It is found all throughout the Lands Between. This is an optional boss, as players don't need to defeat it in order to advance in Elden Ring.

See Putrid Tree Spirit for the Scarlet Rot variant.

Ulcerated Tree Spirit Combat information

Negations (or Absorptions)

The negation numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example, if a negation is 60, 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% will be negated. Bigger number = less damage. A negation of 100 means no damage goes through, and a negation of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.

Elden Ring Ulcerated Tree Spirit Boss Guide

 Ulcerated Tree Spirit Fight Strategy

Melee Users

"Don't Panic" is the motto of the Ulcerated Tree Spirit fight. Most of the times when it's flopping around it won't damage you, so learning when the few times that touching it hurts is the key to this fight.

Setup: Shield and enough armor to survive its bite attack.
Optional Setup: Holy Defense and Fire Damage, such as Fire Pots and Fire Grease

The most important thing to watch out for is the roar before the bite attack. Immediately after the roar, it will crawl up on the wall and charging at you with mouth wide open! Shift left when you see it and you should avoid it. Be ready to roll if it is too close.

Phase 1: Keep pushing towards his left side with your shield up until you are in range. If your Guard Boost is too low, it will stagger you, but its melee attacks are slow enough that you can recover before the next one starts. If it starts a breath attack, get in close if you are near enough, and run to the side if you are not. You can get some solid swings in while it is breathing everywhere else.

Learn the one crawling animation that does damage you from touching its entire body and avoid t.

Watch out for the start of Phase 2, since it does a large AOE with lightning strikes when it first transitions. It can do this AOE later in the fight as well, so continue to watch for the windup. If you are already far, run away. If you are close, move away with your shield up and just eat the damage.

Phase 2: The Tree Spirit starts doing holy damage with its attacks, so blocking with your shield will do chip damage to you. Don't Panic. The strategy is the same as phase 1, but hopefully you've got some timings down and can roll through a few of his melee attacks. Don't be afraid to take the chip damage on your shield instead of a full strength attack.

Repeat enough times to learn the windups and you'll be able to pick out the ones where there's enough time for a charged attack or multiple attacks. Eventually, you'll put this tree back in the ground.

Some more specific attack patterns for roll-focused characters:

Starting off the fight, it will either lumber toward you and prepare for melee combat, or it will charge at you for its three-hit, double-charge combo. For the Double charge, dodge LEFT then LEFT again, then wait until you see it climb the wall and wind up, then dodge LEFT one more time to avoid the grab.  Now, once you are in the fight, it is recommended to stay close to the boss's left arm (right side looking at the beast) where it meets the ground. You can punish almost every melee move with multiple light attacks and this strategy mostly keeps it from using the dangerous yellow breath attacks.

So if it claw swipes, dodge RIGHT, read for another move, then get in a light attack and repeat. If it raises its claw to stomp, then roll RIGHT, count two stomps with the claw you just avoided, then jump attack and reset. If it flops its neck down, roll RIGHT, turn to your left and get a couple of light attacks, then read its next move and reset. If it starts winding up its tail, back away from it then Dodge Roll right, then punish with a jump attack. Finally, if it hunkers down and cranes his neck up and begins to glow, SPRINT AWAY quickly. This is the beginning of phase two and the explosion will kill you or lower your health to where you can be killed easily. It is a grind in the early game because of the beast's high HP, but you can do it! Study the moves and develop a reaction to each one.

One weakness of the Tree Spirit is that its claw and mouth attacks can often overshoot the player.  Staying as close as possible allows for easy damage, only being threatened by the tail whip attack. The whip can be blocked with a decent amount of stamina, since there's enough time after the block to recover from a stagger.

Magic and Ranged Users

You should bully him like a melee build. It is so large that you can't really make a gap that it won't immediately close, and it will also go for a bite attack if you get too far out. Don't start any attacks straight in front of it unless you're sure it's not about to go for a breath attack, and try to shoot for its side after it flops past you.

Stagger Bug:

If you stagger the Ulcerated Tree Spirit during its phase-change animation (the move where it explodes with golden light), the AI of the boss will stop acting in any way. This will allow you to damage the boss however you see fit from safety. Be warned however that after about 8 seconds after the AI stops functioning, the boss will resume moving. So it is in your best interest to continue staggering and Critical Hitting the boss so that it remains immobile while you work towards defeating it.

Ulcerated Tree Spirit Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Double Charge It roars and lunges at you, then writhes once with its body, then climbs the wall and lunges again. The 2nd lunge is a deadly grab. Roll LEFT, roll LEFT again, wait for it to climb the wall, the avoid the 2nd lunge with another roll LEFT.
Charge Grab It roars, climbs the wall, then lunges at you for a deadly grab. When you notice it climb the wall, roll LEFT as it charges.
Gold Breath Spew Its mouth will glow yellow and it will fire a long-distance stream of golden flames. If you are at a distance, sprint horizontally and then approach him to punish once out of the line of fire.
Charge + Spew It will perform "Charge Grab" then coil up and spew fire right below its head. Avoid charge like normal, then sprint to its leftish belly (right side looking at the beast) and punish.
Claw Swipes It will swipe with its left claw, hesitate briefly, and then swipe with its right claw. Roll THROUGH each swipe. So roll LEFT then roll RIGHT.
Sideswipe It will swipe with its claw on whichever side you are on front-to-back to clear you off of its side. Roll THROUGH. If you are approaching to the right, the claw will come from the left, and vice versa. This attack can have a follow up, see below.
Tail Swipe It will wrap its tail around its back then swipe it across. Back away from it as it winds up, then roll RIGHT, and sprint to punish.
Claw/Tail Combo It will perform "Sideswipe" and follow up with a jumping "Tail Swipe" Roll THROUGH then hesitate a short moment, then roll RIGHT through the tail.
Claw Crush It will raise its claw and stomp in a 1-2-1 rhythm. So two stomps on the side that it stomps first, and one on the other side. Roll out of the way of the first stomp, then wait until second stomp happens then punish. HIGHLY PUNISHABLE because it never changes or adds a follow up.
Swipe then Pound It will perform one claw swipe from the right looking at it head on, then it will raise both claws together in a pounding motion. Roll through the first swipe, then SPRINT to its belly (off-center) and the pound will miss you. Punish with a few light attacks.
Neck Flop It will flop its head over and slam its neck down directly in front of itself. May follow up with another neck flop or a neck swipe. Roll RIGHT out of the way, turn to your left and punish with 2 light attacks.
Neck Swipe It will roll its neck to the right (its left) and wind up a heavy swipe that will hit for over half your health. This attack has a massive windup. Be patient, then dodge through to the RIGHT. Similar to the Tail Swipe, I had more luck avoiding this by being slightly further away from its body then by being up against it.
Yellow Fire Explosion It will hunker down, and crane its head up, beginning to glow with yellow fire. Subsequent fire pillars will rise up at points marked with a glowing spot on the floor. This has 2 hit boxes. The main AOE explosion around the beast that will knock and stun you, and an AOE on each pillar of yellow fire that blasts upward from the marked places on the floor. As soon as you notice this move, SPRINT away while being mindful to avoid the pillars that will soon form by watching the floor.

Ulcerated Tree Spirit Lore, Notes & Other Trivia

  • Variation from Stormveil Castle can be killed with ranged weapons/spells with ease - the player should place summoning sign near 2nd boss fight from that area and run to area from that side. If the player manage to get summoned shortly before ascending to the area, where Tree Spirit appears, the player will spot him with most of his attacks being harmless.
  • Tree Spirits bear resemblance to the Pus of Man, an enemy from Dark Souls 3, and are an implementation of the “Snake Soul” boss concept from the early beta of Dark Souls III, referenced in its internal file name.

Additional Fight Strategy

  • Enter the arena to spawn the boss, then run across the bridge to the southeast. Take a right and enter the room with the Assassin throwing Lightning Pots and climb the ladder. Leave through the golden double gate doors and immediately roll to the right to dodge a Knight's arrow. Jump on the railing in front of you and down onto the roof of the building in front of you. From here, you can freely hit the Ulcerated Tree Spirit with ranged attacks without taking damage.
  • Use Loretta's Greatbow plus the Magic-Shrouading Cracked Tear to kill it in 10 shots or so.

i honestly like these quite a lot. should there be so many of them No. but out of the repeated bosses this is the most fun one imo

      • Anonymous

I found a way to cheese the Ulcerated Tree Spirit in Stormveil Castle. It does take some time though (at least it did for me since my gear isn't that great yet). Jump down to get the UTS to spawn and run through the area to find the MGS3:SE (Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater) ladder (some of you may know what I am referring to here lol), and climb all the way up to get out of there. This puts you back at the GS (Grafted Scion) hall. Go through that hall to the courtyard and run past all the enemies and head to the Liftside Chamber Grace Site.

DO NOT ACTIVATE IT! Go through the door to the previous area down in the basement to get back to the UTS and stay up on the upper platform, and even better get up on the stone arch above that. Just take it out with any Range/Magic and Pots when it comes close. It will never hit you and you can kill it easily.

Also, they lied about how you can have Multiplayer help or be able to use Spirit Ashes for this Boss. Just like many things I have found to not be true at all in this guide as I am using it to figure out where to go. I hope this helps you all out.

        • I can literally never tell whether any one of their movements are part of just moving or an attack pattern. In any case, at least these things are weak to Bleed, so I just burst them down with Bleed proc setups.

          • Anonymous

After a while you get used to fighting them, then you start to enjoy them. Except the one in the haligtree, **** that one

            • Anonymous

My least favorite fromsoftware enemy, just because it feels like it belongs in a different game. You can make big enemies fit, this guy does not. Like Almudron in Monster Hunter, he's just too damn big for his movements. Go back to the Dark Souls 3 design works!

              • Anonymous

why make flashy attack animations when it clips over everything everytime and you cant even see it properly because of the sht camera

                • Anonymous

the camera isnt bad on here at all. the attacks are so telegraphed that even if u cant see anything u can still dodge them

                  • Anonymous

These guys have the most telegraphed attacks in history. Camera isn't even an issue if you dont lock on. Easy as hell to stagger. Seems like people panic real easily because these have big, dramatic bursts of movement, but it doesn't change the fact they're attacks are super telegraphed.

                    • Anonymous

As of 2/18/2024, the following about the triple spirit fight in Leyndel, Ashen Capital is incorrect:

"These enemies do not have boss bars, but they will not respawn when killed." They indeed do not have boss health bars, but they do respawn, and in the same spots. The first one is always already roaming, of course.
"Closest Site of Grace: Forbidden Lands" This is true, unfortunately :D but it'd be worth adding that, worst of all, there is not even a stake of Marika anywhere and you cannot summon Torrent at all: you have to go through two elevators and two long segments all on foot to get there.
"Multiplayer is allowed for this boss" No, there is no summoning pool anywhere that I could find. You'd need the seamless coop mod.
"You can summon Spirit Ashes for this boss" No, there is no rebirth monument anywhere near.

The good news is that there's almost no reason to fight them, they only give about 19k each, they hit reasonably hard and the Erdtree Favor +2 that they guard can just be grabbed by sneaking around the edge of the arena and grabbing it.

                      • Anonymous

They filtered billions, despite being really well designed imo. They have a bunch of safespots during attacks too

                        • Anonymous

At the Haligtree one all you have to do is trigger the creature, then jump down and run back up the branch where you entered the area. It's then possible to spam rotten breath (or any range attack) from a safe distance (the point where it braches to the right). Just remember to temporarily change your flask allocation for extra FP beforehand.

Someone at fromsoftware got really pissed that this boss didn't make it into DS3 so now they were hell-bent on making sure you see this fkin thing, multiple times

I just want to know if this dudes are more hated than seluvis. I just limit myself to morally disliking both .

I bloody hate this dawn thing, fought only two of them and both times they did the bite grab attack right as I killed them, both times I died so I gained zero runes/souls. I hope they fix this because it's unfair. (Note: we were on opposite sides of the area when I kill them so me being bad is not a excuse, the damn thing teleports.)

Highly recommended that you fight these with your camera unlocked. Helps a lot with the "camera eating" and makes it much easier to control your rolling angle.

Whichever sh!thead wrote "they will not respawn when killed" on the Ashen Capital ones, hope you burn nice and slow. And same to the lazy ass bunch who never bothered to update it too.

Those mtfk in Ashen Capital do respawn, and they still do when this chat was sent. Checked it personally on my own save literally seconds before writing all this.

As a newbie to souls games I had a lot of trouble with these guys early on as they are rather intimidating and don’t give you any space, but I think that is part of the gist. They might even be something of a teaching tool since like with a lot of the bosses the best method is to roll into their attacks so you can be close enough to strike them. Granted, you need to learn the timing, but in this case it’s not super tight. On a vaguely philosophical note, I’ve also learned over my time playing Elden Ring that it is best to approach fights with some analytic calmness and to forget about your lost runes. It makes the game a lot more fun. If you’re still having problems then just set away your pride for a minute and watch a YouTube tutorial. We aren’t all gaming gods. We are but tarnished.

Enemies that are "hard" simply because they block your camera and you cant tell what's going on is just straight up bad game design.

                                            • Anonymous

Just exploring Stormveil with my wife watching me play and then we get to the bottom and then all of a sudden the ground rumbles one of these monstrosities pops out of the ground and both of us yell "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT ****ING THING?!!"

                                              • Anonymous

This enemy wouldn't seem so obnoxious if there weren't FIFTEEN of them (counting the putrid variant)! Like, why does there need to be that many? A handful, four or five, would be just perfect. But when you just keep running into more and more and more and more, one every couple hours or something... like, wtf. At a certain point, it just becomes really lame and annoying.

                                                • Anonymous

So, counting the Scarlet Rot version too (because it's basically the same thing)... There are almost fifteen of these things. Talk about overused.

                                                  • Anonymous

annoying to fight? check! seemingly random hitboxes? check! therefore should be a double or triple boss fight in the DLC? check!

This page is missing the tree spirit in the Haligtree area. The one you have to defeat to progress Millicent’s questline.

The first tree spirt I found was the one in Finger folk grave at rl 15-20.The thing exploding from the ground, the writhing mass of flesh and bark, the cadence of the fight It really sucked me in. Granted I was very under prepared for the fight, one attack was almost my full heath bar and I only had like 5 flasks, so 5 mistakes. Died dozens of times but I got close in a couple of cases. Came back when I was a maybe 10 more lvls and a bigger weapon and finally took down this beast. All the spirts afterwards were kind of a cake walk, taking maybe 1-3 tries (and I definitely carried whenever I was summed for these bosses). Probs because I spent so much time on that first one . So if your like me and run into them (or any repeated boss for that matter) the first one is always the hardest and will eventually click.

                                                          • I really enjoy fighting these things tbh. I get to jump over their tail swipes, which is cool in my eyes, and their grab attack lets me do some dramatic finishes, which is absolutely baller.

And honestly? Most of their arenas are perfectly fine, even the ones you fight in the catacombs. The only one that really sucks is the one in Elphael on account of the *lore* arena.

For the Haligtree one, just cheese it from the branches. Don't bother fighting it in the rot pool. This one is just horrible design.

                                                                One word: disorienting.

Which direction is it facing? What obstacle is your camera going to get stuck behind? Is it idle or winding up for an attack? Which attack is it even winding up for? Are you dizzy yet? Nothing about these things is particularly difficult; its visual design is just disorienting. Every attack I eat from these things -- which is many -- I can pretty much chalk up to to not being able to tell what's happening.

                                                                • Anonymous

A lot of negativity out there about the one in Heligtree. As an arcane mostly melee build using an occult great stars.
I found that one easier then the rest.
To the left of the rot pond when facing how you enter off the root, there is a descent size area of land.
I found that his big movement attacks had him falling off into the pond breaking his rhythm. Giving me time to heal or regroup.
Using the brass shield I just focused on blocking more than dodging and got in hits when I could.
He falls off so much this fight was way less aggressive then he is in other areas.
When he knocked me into the rot pond I just ran back up. He usually tried to follow, falling into the pond too, and I had time to bolus if needed as he made his way around the cliff again.

                                                                  • While normally I'll often suggest fighting bosses through trial and error and learning their move sets, the Ulcerated Tree Spirits are hard exclusion. I don't doubt the viability of the guides suggested above when trying to defeat this things. However, their movement and attack animations blend too much with other, and often become indecipherable to use as tells as to when they are open for damage.

My personal strategies for these Tree Spirits are to simply stack as many damage buffs as possible then melt them before they can deal any considerable damage. Since they are weak to Bleed and Frostbite, I heavily suggest using weapons with inherent Bleed buildup combined with a Cold-affinity Ash of War. Their vulnerability to Fire makes Rivers of Blood and Eleonora's Poleblade excellent choices, too.

                                                                    • Anonymous

I dont think these stats are correct. It says they have 20 magic absorb, but in my testing, they have very high magic absorb. Rock sling does tons more damage to them compared to glintstone great shard for example.

                                                                      • Anonymous

Fighting the one at the Haligtree is undoubtedly one of the worst experiences I've had with this game.

Nothing they do is particularly difficult to deal with in a vacuum, but it's everything around the boss that makes it god awful. Horrible camera system that both doesn't know where it wants to look and can't show the whole boss? Check. Tiny arena, cluttered with awkward objects and a miniature rot swamp? Check. Massive AOEs and hitboxes that are hard to maneuver around in the already limited arena? Check. Clipping every time the boss moves around with no visual clarity? Check.

Having these bosses put anywhere that's not on a large, flat plane is such a recipe for disaster, but thankfully they only did it about four times.

                                                                        • Anonymous

These guys are actually not that bad to fight, with the right method. Don’t bother locking on, just hug them as best you can and most of their attacks will just whiff or are easy to dodge even if you can’t see exactly which move they are doing. Only moves you will need to worry about are the AoE explosion and the leaping attack where it grabs you in its mouth. The latter is very telegraphed and easy to dodge, though it might take a few attempts to get the timing down. It’s also the only time I recommend locking onto them. I got my sh*t rocked many times by the first one of these I fought, but after I figured out you just need to stay right next to them then they became some of the easiest bosses in the game. Good luck out there Tarnished!

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                            • Anonymous

If there were just one or two you could call it a fluke, but they specifically chose to have 12 copies of this bastard (3 with rot), and locked flask charges behind it.

                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                • Anonymous

Why didn´t him running into me hurt me that time but it did the next? It´s a mystery. Why does his breath attack go backwards sometimes? It´s a mystery. Why did he glitch onto higher terrain and then somehow glitch back through it and grab me? It´s a mystery!

                                                                                  • Anonymous

This page says the three in the Ashen Capitol don't respawn. They do. I ran all the way back there twice, the first time after I killed one. When I saw it roaming around, I thought it was the second one I found. But then when I went back the SECOND time, it turns out all three of them were still alive and that one was one I killed the first time. I get killed by an easy boss simply because it has the world's worst camera tracking with impossible to perceive attacks and damage that knocks away half my health. I had an easier time with the spirit in the Haligtree, and that one was terrible. This is just disappointing.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

Shitty camera, shitty arenas. just an abolute abortion of a boss. Whoever designed this thing should be ****ing ashamed and banned from boss design

                                                                                      • Anonymous

**** this boss. After going through the tough section with the iron chariot thing I wasn't expecting a boss to skull-**** me with two of the worst fromsoft boss tropes. Ridiculously large monster that you can rarely see fully and a tiny ****ing boss room, that unholy combination makes this boss an absolutely chaotic chore with a **** ton of flailing, unclear attacks and a shitty camera.

                                                                                        • I'm genuinely surprised to find out that these guys are so despised. They're one of my favorites tbh, up there with Dragonkin and Makar. The big beasty bosses are so satisfying to defeat. Learn when to roll, give em a wallop! Humanoids on the other hand... They get the benefit of precise tracking AI and will funk you nine ways to Sunday.

                                                                                          • Idk whats going on, I am by no means good at this game. I cannot beat most of the main bosses without spirits or summons, but I have never died to these guys, even the 3 protecting erdtree favor +2. (helps that they can damage each other)

Using a melee tanky-bloodloss build (dual bloodhounds fang, or dual gargoyles twinblade), if you stay super close to THEIR back righthand side, and spam jump attacks they almost never hit you, even without dodging.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                                • Anonymous

And I dont consider it to be bs, it's one of the bosses that when you gain some experience fighting them, you'll never die again against them, unlike many truly bs things, like Revenants, Lobsters, or Death Rite Bird's ghostflame explosion and Malenia's waterfowl epilepsy

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

Once you get a feel for their moveset the camera issues don't really matter that much and it's honestly a pretty satisfying kill. Would definitely rank them lower than the really fun fights like Tree Sentinel but still a decent boss.

Screw the Putrid ones in Grand Cloister/Haligtree though, those fights can be brutal.

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

These combine the worst design tendencies of both Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring, but somehow I've started having fun fighting them. Maybe it's Stockholm syndrome or something.

                                                                                                            • Anonymous

You’ll have to repeat the lure/mist a couple times but it’s a safe way to get it done.

Does anyone know if they will come back if you kill all 3? I would like to keep them there to replay the fight. Especially fun juggling 2 in a big arena.

Only fromsoftware can make a rotting sausage harder than literal gods. Really feel like these should've just stayed on the editing floor of Dark Souls 3. At least that game is not tainted with these disgusting ****

                                                                                                                            • A huge pain in the ass if you rely on dodges, because it moves in such an erratic way.

This can potentially be a problem, it was for me in my first playthrough, UTC spawned and I killed it but the camp was trashed.
When I read the colossal weapons wiki I went back for it but it wasn't in the chest. I tried the usual, fast travel reloads but the chest was empty every time. I was getting the prompt to open it but no prompt to search it and no purple glow you'd expect from a weapon chest. Obviously when the camp reloaded after killing UTC the chest was bugged.
To avoid that sneak to the encampment where it spawns, when it does DO NOT aggro it circle the camp and use the entrance furthest from its head and sneak to the hearse holding the hammer.

Not only it is spammed around, it has no lore and is a pain in the ass to beat. Everytime there is a secret area, the devs just thought "oh what if I dump this mf here hehe that sure will be hard".
