Base Serpent Messmer steps up once you've depleted Messmer the Impaler's health to 50%. His health remains at 50%, which gives you and advantage. In this new phase, Base Serpent Messmer not only retains his old form's original attacks but also introduces a set of new, more lethal attacks that's done by his red snake. The battle begins with the Serpent Fireball which is where he turns into a big serpent and hurls a massive fireball, then reverts back to the humanoid form. In his humanoid state, he executes his attacks with increased speed compared to his previous form, making him a more poerful boss.
Among the fresh additions to his moveset is a snake transformation that does a bite combo followed by a powerful ground slam. However, one of his most powerful attacks is the Fire Grab. This technique has his right hand engulfed in flames. He'll unleash a torrent of fire from his grasp while impaling his spear to you with flames, almost guaranteeing instant death.
Proceeding in this battle requires a slow apprach to Base Serpent Messmer's abilities and vulnerabilities. Capitalize on the small opening right after he uses Serpent Fireball to unleash a ton of heavy strikes, increasing your damage output. When engaging his humanoid form, maintain an aggressive approach but be ready to switch to defensive the moment he transforms into his serpent form. His serpent attacks pack a punch, requiring you to dodge and counter.
Above all, remain alert when you notice Base Serpent Messmer's right hand glowing with flames it's a sign of his powerful Fire Grab. React by backing away and rolling back, giving you high chance to evade this lethal attack.

Base Serpent Messmer Attacks & Counters
Attack | Description | Counter |
Leaping Fire Ball | Messmer leaps into the air and summons a fireball in his hand and charges toward you. | This is an easy attack to predict. Once Messmer jumps in the air and summons a fireball, wait for him to thrust forward then roll to either left or right. |
Spear Thrust | In close range, Messmer quickly thrusts his spear toward you while you're attacking | It's quite hard to tell if he's about to thrust his spear, so the best way to counter this is to back up from time to time when attacking Messmer in close range. |
Double Spear Swing | In close range, Messmer swings is spear to the right and left towards you. | You can easily counter this attack by rolling to the left and right before each swing. |
Leaping Fire Spear Throw | At mid-range, Messmer will leap high in the air and throw is spear very fast. | Once he leaps through the air, pay close attention to his left arm and roll to either right or left once you see him about to throw. |
Spear Fire Barrage | At any random moment, Messmer will fly around your character while swinging his spear and suddenly stop in front of you to release a flurry of flaming spear attacks, ending with a spear slam to the ground. | Once you see Messmer stop near you, immediately roll to the right twice and once he leaps to the air for the Spear slam, immediately roll back or roll to either right or left. |
Serpent Fireball | Base Serpent Messmer transforms into a big red serpent and slams a big fireball towards you. | Repeatedly roll to either right or left to evade this attack. |
Triple Serpent Bite | Quickly transforms into a serpent to bite you three times ending with a bite slam to the ground. | Can be dodged by rolling to either right or left when you see the mouth of the serpent open. |
Fire Grab | His right hand starts to glow red with flames and he suddenly grabs you when you're near. He will then proceed to release a huge flame from the hand he grabbed you with and will impale you with his spear on the left, which also releases a big flame. Taking the Fire grab will most likely guarantee death for you. | Upon seeing his right hand glowing bright and engulfed with flames, immediately roll back to evade this attack. |

awesome boss, but once again host of fingers really get on my nerves sometimes. taker's flames makes messmer's tells really hard to see lmao.

Since he looks like Malenia in her second form, Radagon has to be his father, right? Or is there someone else with red hair running around we don’t know about yet lol.
- Anonymous
You can also summon Jolan as an NPC summon in the Boss room, she seems to be mutually exclusive with Hornsent

Honestly Mimic trivializes this fight, a shame since Dancing Lion (Death) was such a monster fight.
Still hella fun, getting flame drake tali3 & brass shield goes a LONG way in this fight.

I don't know how I did it exactly but I attacked the serpent when it attacked and I heard a breaking sound, the serpent screaming in pain and a huge chunk of his HP gone. I think you have to hit the serpent eye with an attack, maybe multiple times

No one can say this dudes hard. Every other boss a good +20 tries and that's just from them flying around. This guy's tells are great. You've been playing long enough to know he's gonna wombo combo you, he's gonna have flashy attacks and the musics epic as ****. 5 times on phase 1, 2 times on phase 2. And if I can make a suggestion, get his weapon. The L2 RIIIPPPSSSSS

After 100+ tries... I finally beat his ass. My best advice: Stack a weapon with 2 buildups (e.g. Rotten Greatwood Axe with blood enchantment) then use mimic. Mimic can apply all the stacks+proc the big damage from buildups and that's how I was finally able to do it

Is it possible to use the snake-slaying spear from rykards bossfight?

You were magnificent, Messmer. I shall never forget you for as long as I live.

I wish he had two separate health bars, each for one of his two phases, then he would be truly on par with malenia’s difficulty. Or maybe life steal, but that is a bit out of character for a flame wielder like Messmer

Is it just me, or the Fight Strategy for Melee users looks like it was AI generated? :P

Probably the best DLC fight so far. Yes he can still one shot you easily but his health can be easily destroyed with some attacks. Whereas other bosses it took off 1% of their health. Idk maybe it's just if you explore a lot cause I was at Scadutree 10 when I fought him.

why make another page for his phase 2? same for radahn
just make it into one page like all other bosses who change name for phase 2

So idk what happened on my fight but instead of having 50% hp he had like 1% when he transitioned to his 2nd phase

I think I this version of MESSMER is weak to Holy damage because saw myself doing double numbers using the same skill (Ordivis' Vortex) through phase 1 and 2
- Anonymous
How do you actually fight this phase? In the 1st one if you dodged his attacks he had like maybe half a second window before he began moving again, but in this one after finishing a combo he just does that spin jump to get away, and then transformed into a snake thats out of the arena?
- Anonymous
Weak to lightning and Dragon grease/weapons in his second phase.

Pretty sure he has mandatory damage when he summons that serpent barrage with the red mist. Some nonsense

this phase is so much better telegraphed than the first. A joy to fight against

Does anyone know how to dodge the double snake chaotic combo attack?
- Anonymous
The purple explosion at the beginning of his Snake transform combo is so bs. Comes out super fast, knocks you down and almost one shots, and THEN you have to dodge like 8 attacks. Wtf.
