Rellana, Twin Moon Knight Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Rellana, Twin Moon Knight:

Melee Users

Rellana, Twin Moon Knight is the boss encountered at the end of Castle Ensis exploration. You will find the entrance to their arena next to the Castle-Lord's Chamber Site of Grace on the East Wing. This boss can switch between Physical and Elemental damage, which also gives them Ranged and Melee attacks. At first, the boss will sparingly use their Elemental Attacks and will mainly use 2 Greatswords to inflict damage. Despite their size, they can move quickly and are mobile enough to close the gap with just one jump.

When it comes to their Physical Attacks, you can use a Shield to protect yourself from incoming damage or dodge by rolling to either side. The boss favors slashing damage which makes them look like they're dancing. Up close, her movement is fluid and lets them move around the arena making it difficult to damage them, while they maintain being on the offensive. The boss can be staggered with a heavy attack, and then follow it up with an animated move by pressing R1. This allows you to deal more damage when you break their poise.

They key to winning this fight is patience. The boss has a long combo that makes it difficult to get near her and chip away at her health. When you see an opening, always opt for a heavy attack for a chance to stagger her. The second phase of the fight begins when her health drops below 50%. This is characterized by the change in their Greatswords by infusing each of them with Magic and Fire elements. The greatswords will glow orange and blue alongside her, and her new moves will be infused with the elements. For melee users, you can strategically use a shield to block incoming attacks. You can even summon Mimic Tear to fight alongside you, or opt to summon Leda here. It is recommended to only have 1 Summon so the boss will not have a dramatic increase in damage.

This boss becomes more dangerous during the second phase, and most of the moves become more difficult to dodge. The dodge frames become shorter and the AoE of skills become larger. The fire element creates the widest AoE when using the Sleight of Sword - Fire. This also creates smaller rings of fire in the outer AoE but they don't deal as much damage in the center of the skill. Ideally, you can roll backward twice to get yourself out of the area. On the other hand, the Magic-imbued greatsword can reach far and wide and lets her fire a projectile that follows your movements. When you see her cast the huge Magical Greatsword, be prepared for the first downward slash, this is immediately followed by a sweep across the arena slash which can reach nearly the entire room. Make sure to dodge early for this attack.

After a while, this boss can even transform into a Moon, which protects them from incoming damage and is closely followed by a plunge attack. When you get hit by the falling moon, you will get stunned and you will not be able to control your character. This essentially prevents you from rolling away, and can even finish you off if you don't have enough HP. This is when the Pearldrake Talisman comes in handy, by reducing incoming Elemental Damage. As the fight comes to an end, the boss will alternate between Physical and Elemental Attacks. Always pay attention to her greatswords, because this will tell you what her next move is. When you defeat Rellana, Twin Moon Knight, a new Site of Grace will appear within her arena.

Magic and Ranged Users

Strategy Writeup for Magic Users. This is a work in progress. Feel free to add helpful information here.

Sorcery users can cast Terra Magica at the door before entering, then cast two Ranni's Dark Moon back to back for great damage, chill, and to reduce the boss' magic resistance. Throughout the fight, one of the best spells to use is Night Comet, as Rellana will (most of the time) not dodge it, and it deals great damage when cast while holding a Staff of Loss on the other hand. Radagon Icon's increase in casting speed is very useful in this fight.

Incantation users can make use of tanky spirit ash summons to keep Rellana still. Meanwhile, the summoner can cast rot breath and swarm of flies from a distance. The goal is to defeat her quickly, before she uses the more damaging abilities in her second phase. It is possible to defeat her before she summons the twin moons. If she does summon them, remember to jump three times (a third time when she lands).

Rellana, Twin Moon Knight Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Blade Dance Her bread and butter combo starter. Jumping to the side, she will do a spin slash followed by a quick stab. From then, she can follow with a myriad of attacks. pay attention to what she does! Roll into the attack to dodge both the spin and the stab, guaranteeing a roll attack should your weapon be fast enough. Alternatively, you can roll away to disengage, allowing you to recuperate.
Glintblade Phalanx

Similar to the skill of the same name, Rellana will only uses this when at a distance. There are two variations to this move:

Upper glintblade: just like the skill of the same name, she will summon three glintblades atop her head, which will automatically track the player after a while. She can still attack while the skill is active.

Lower glintblade: a direct attack, she will summon three darker glintblades in front of her, which will track the player with no delay. She can follow with a two strike lunge. and may sometimes even extend the lunge into a combo (to confirm).

During phase 2, both moves are stronger, summoning more glintblades.

For upper glintblade, be very careful to not get caught in the middle of a combo while the glintblades track you, especially in phase 2.

For lower glintblade, an optimal punish will have you roll into them, followed by a run towards the right side of the boss, allowing you to dodge her lunge and land a fully charged heavy attack.

Giant Carian Greatsword Similar to the skill Carian Greatsword, Rellana lifts one of her swords, charging up a massive glintsone blade. she then swipes it down, and after a brief pause, performs a sweep. The attack nearly covers the whole boss room: do not try to run away. she will only do this after around 30% to 40% of her health is gone

The first move can be avoided if you are far enough, allowing you to recuperate (if you react in time), but the sweep is nearly unavoidable. The swipe is easy to dodge, but the sweep must be preemptively dodged. the attack leaves Rellana open, allowing either a heavy attack or a charged one if your weapon is fast enough.

Heavy Attack After performing a combo of Sword Slash, Rellana ends it with a Heavy Attack where you see them pulling back holding the sword behind them to strike forward. Dodge by rolling to either side or toward the boss.
Magic Arc Rellana crouches while holding the sword behind her; after a second the sword will start to glow bright, and then fire a Magic Arc towards the player's direction. Move to either side, then roll just before the arc hits you.
Six-Sword Magic The boss waves her right arm to create 3 Magic Swords, then repeats the same move to create another set of Magic Swords. This magic tracks the player's movement and applies damage on contact. Dodge by rolling to either side.
Sleight of Sword - Flame Using the Fire-imbued Greatsword, Rellana will make a twisting move to create a tornado-like flame around him. This move damages multiple times to everything within the AoE and creates smaller rings of fire in the outer area. Rellana can repeat this move up to 3 times. Keep out of her attack range by rolling away from her. You can roll backward twice to keep a safe distance.
Sleight of Sword - Magic Using the magic-imbued Greatsword, Rellana will make a series of slashes in different directions. After about 4 slashes, the boss raises her sword over his head and strikes a heavy attack, and adds an arc projectile that travels directly in front of him. Keep out of her attack range by rolling away from her. You can also use a shield to block incoming attacks or reduce incoming damage. Alternatively using the Raptor of the Mists ash of war makes the double horizontal slashes very easy to dodge.
Sword Slash She slashes with both greatswords in different directions. Keep out of her attack range by rolling away from her. Roll backward to disengage.
Sword Stab After jumping back to disengage, the boss will lunge forward to close the gap and stab with the left sword. Dodge by rolling to your left side.

Phase 2: Moon and Fire

At around 60% to 50% health, Rellana will back up. She will then inbue both her swords with Glinstone Magic and Mesmer's Flame, respectively. She will then usually use either                                    Sleight of Sword - Fire when you are close to her, or                    Sleight of Sword - Magic when afar. This is however not guaranteed and she may very well use any other combo. Be careful!

If you anticipate this move, you can hit Rellana with two fully charged heavy attacks! the moves possess a small hitbox though, so try not to get hit.
Twin Moons Rellana's signature move. She will only do this when at low health. After raising into the air, she will summon two moons. She then smashes them to the ground, before lunging down herself. All three attacks create a massive shockwave which will lift you into the air and combo, usually a guaranteed kill.  Either run away to disengage, or jump the shockwaves to guarantee a heavy jump attack, should you be close enough. (Using the Raptor of the Mists ash of war can consistently dodge the last two explosions if you can dodge the first one.)

Felt bored out of my mind trying to dodge her attack. Tried deflecting hardtear and the quality of this fight just bumped up sky high. Still getting my ass beaten but man I love Sekiro 2.

      • Anonymous

Wild how there's no summoning pool near her.

There's one for castle ensis, but getting through the whole thing and also winning this fight with 7 flasks is a tall order

        • Anonymous

Much easier with powerstanced lightning great-weapons. If you're lucky it might even rain in the arena for that little bit of extra damage.

I ran 2 +20 omen cleavers with jump gear (body, talisman) and defensive talismans (physical, magical, crimson flask boost). Was able win at RL 95, Blessing 2.

Play aggressively for stance breaks. I struggle with the fast projectiles after her phase change, so I ended up just running up to force the flame move, tanked that first hit, and dps raced her to the end of the fight. Moon drop is jumpable, and you can use raptor jump skill for easier timing.

          • Anonymous

Use deflecting and opaline hardtears and silver mirrorshield. The opaline defenses on top of the mirrorshield’s really high magic resist helps you effortlessly facetank even her heaviest hit, i took a tiny itty bitty sliver of damage from her moon blasts, and even less from the sword beams. Deflecting then more than makes up for low guard boost, as long as you time right. Still gotta pick and choose your blocks though, to pull off a guard counter at the end of a chain. Pull off enough guard counters in a short enough timeframe for a stance break and crit. If youre feeling lucky grab the talisman from Belurat that boosts attack after a crit to pull off some nasty big skill hits afterward. Try to sneak one in during phase shift as well. As long as your dodges and blocks are well timed, you should be clear.

Shes like malenia but good, cus theres less bullshit, what little bullshit remains is nullified by a good shield, which wont heal her for no reason.

            • Anonymous

What worked for me: Milady with wing stance and using the R2 version. Avoids many of her attacks and with the right talismans does 3k+ damage per hit. Took 12 of them in ng+5 (along with one critical hit).

              • Anonymous

Yeah that's the new longest I've ever spent on a souls boss. Previous was demon of hatred from sekiro taking me an hour, this chick took double that lol

Was able to beat her at 5 scadutree and level 130 going for poise break and jumping attacks with 2h giant crusher. Jump stack talisman + jump attack chest. Stance break and charged attack tears. Was able to consistently get full charged off after a critical from stance break and when she changes phases. Got 3 stance breaks in total, swap to misericorde for the critical

Also tried going 1h with heavy magic block shield and doing guard counters instead of jump attacks, kept getting her almost dead but dying to second phase combos. Probably could've done it that way eventually as I improved on dodging her second phase combos but it was safer to just dodge everything then just attack instead of eating the chip damage from magic and fire

                • Maybe not the best of advice but I highly recommend learning to parry her with either a small shield or a dagger. She's relentless like Malenia except without low poise to compensate. So by parrying you can consistently give yourself windows to attack. Just fish for the side jump slash, delayed heavies and when she does the heavy slashes dodge the first and parry the second. It took me a lot of effort but after a while I was able to get attack windows by interrupting her unending combos

                  • i just beat her, good a good few tries. shes probably my favorite boss fight in the whole soulsborne elden sekiro series. lightning works really well, and i used my physick with lightning cracked tear and stonebarb. boiled crab and a phys dam negations and/or magic dam negation def help too. i mostly got in hits playing really strictly at a short medium range. be defensive unless you know you can dodge good. yall got this

Took me few hours to find the build.

Magic user: Stopped summoning Leda Needle Knight, made her health pool huge. Used Greatshield Soldier +10. Lvl 160, NG, V:60 I:80. Blessing 3. Spells: Terra Magica, Comet Azur, Ranni Dark Moon, Stars of Ruin

                          Talismans:
                          Godfrey Icon
                          Graven Mass
                          Dragoncrest Greatshield
                          Radagon Icon

                          Physick:
                          Cerulean Hidden
                          Magic Shourding Cracked

                          Weapon:
                          Lusat's
                          Carian Regal

Could have used Lusats Crown for an additional buff to Stars of Ruin.
Strat: Enter fog wall, move toward her to keep from getting the 'stand at door get one shot' attack, dodge attacks and look for opening to call your Greatshields summon. The run I beat her on was actually terrible cos I had to drink twice from getting hit so many times. Called the summons, they aggro'ed and held it, cast Dark Moon providing the debuff to Rellana. In the center of the arena cast Terra Magic, drank Physick, nuked her with Comet Azur. With a little luck on RNG for Rellana's positioning, the summons will have basically blocked her in, Comet Azur mostly lands and end of phase 1, first half of her health.

With Rellana still mostly held by the summons I just began spamming Ruin of Stars and it ate away at her health with a quickness. Spammed it as rapidly as I could, the spell had good tracking on her, had to drink my blue juice and re apply the floor paint buff, but just kept at it with Ruin of Stars as fast as possible. She took out the Greatshields with the double moon AoEs, i had to trackstar, but Ruin of Stars eventually brought the last bit of health off. Did it on the second try of this strat.

Tried a few runs with Cannon of Haima, Night Comet, Glint blade Trio, Carian Ret, Greatblade Phalanx etc, other staffs, summoning Leda, using Tiche, but the high dps/ mobility of Stars of Ruins did the trick. Good luck Astrologer.

If you need to postpone her fight and come back later when you’ve collected more Scadutrees you can skip Castle Ensis by skirting down the path to the right of the Castle Front grace and follow it past the swamp. You’ll find a Spiritspring that takes you up to Fort Reprimand and thus Scadu Altus, unlocking more of the map.

Fingerprint+scholar shield, frozen lightning, amd the good-ol tried and true stone of gurranq into lightning spear is all you need for this fight. Its hard to stay buffed but you can pretty much avoid taking major damage and that stupid little triple moon disco ball drop crap she does can be blocked almost 100%. Throw on a spelldrake tally+magic fortification and you should be fine...good luck and Dont you dare go hollow!!

Interesting how she has a similar tall thin build to Renalla. I'd always assumed Renalla was big because of the great rune but I guess it's just a Carian thing? Makes you wonder if their inhuman looks, affinity for magic/glintstone (which comes from space) and obsession with the moon might mean they're aliens.

Now that I thinkg about it - we at least know Renalla has pale skin as well. Alabaster Lords are magic, tall and thin, and hav pale skin. Caria is a matriarchy and we never see any males of their family in portraits are anything...I wonder if Renalla and Ranella could be Alabaster Ladies?

Before second phase I went with a blood loss Claymore to poke her between the little gaps after finishing her combos. Starting second phase, I used Rotten Crystal Sword, just to rot her up, and then I switch to a Cold Greatsword, same strategy, poke her between gaps. No Scadutree Fragments used, it took me like 50 tries, It's the first boss in all Elden Ring that made me switch to weapons I don't use against bosses, and to really think on a strategy. I commonly go with Meteoric Blade and Cold Golem's Halberd, that's it.

                                      • Anonymous

Took me 46 tries, more than Malenia (no summons/MP, no magic). My biggest tip for this fight is positioning. If you're close to her, she will almost always open with a dodge and double sword attack into a combo, and if you dodge the opening swing you can kinda just back away and look for your punish window.

The hardest attacks for me were her long elemental combo in Phase 2, and her phase transition "Sleight of Sword" ranged move. For the latter, sprint away from her and to the side to avoid the first two slashes, then jump the third horizontal one. The fourth should go over your head. Then simply dodge the last one. For the long combo, just lock on and roll around her to the left. Most of her swings will go over your head. When she does a double-handed overhead with a magic projectile, that's your punish. She can also finish with a crossed-swords slash that is also a punish.

I beat her at +5 Scadutree blessing using a +25 Lightning Milady. I played it very safe and only used regular heavy attacks. The weapon has low poise damage so I never got a stance break. You can do it!!

                                        • Anonymous

                                          3 tips:

The twin moons creates a SHOCKWAVE, it doesn't instantly put a hitbox across the entire arena floor. You may have to delay your dodge a bit based on distance.

When she uses giant carian great sword, you CANNOT jump the horizontal sweep. I've tried like 8 times with different things, and I always got the same result.

One of her combo enders is a diagonal slash with both swords. She may follow up with another slash from the other side, but there's a significant gap, long enough for me to get a light greatsword r2 and recover in time to dodge. If you dodge it, you should always be able to swing (outside maybe colossal weapons). If you get hit by the first slash, however, do NOT spam dodge. The second slash is specifically timed to roll catch. Good luck.

                                          • You can Scarlet aoenia early - easy while an ash is around and wasn't getting staggered out of it even solo

Spelldrake talisman 3 was helpful on the full moon spell... if like me you whiff timing of a Crimsonwhorl Buttletear which would absorb allllll it's damage. Whilst the fire tornado is much easier to dodge

. As she punishes heals quite effectively, crimson seed talisman can be useful to not come out lower.

Finally, parry isn't too hard and not risky in first phase specially. Use Varian Retaliation parry skill and you not only get more parry frames, but can block some glint blades and make them your own

Despite this page saying that she´s strong to hemorrhage, I found an extremely easy success with Bleed build (Rivers of Blood and Swarm of Flies) + Mimic Tear. We absolutely melted her first try with this setup.

Parrying will destroy her and interrupt her combos + give window for charged heavy or 2 light hit. Cross slash, spin-to-stab, second double slash combo, and delayed horizontal slash is highly consistent to parry. Bonus: on phase transition try to poise break her as she does nothing for 5 seconds, and will most likely do fire tornado after which is easy to dodge.

Took me 5hours solo with Godslayer GS did managed to get her. Then I leveled all the blessing and know my place.

fun fight though. something that does good poise damage is good, and i particularly like the dueling shield just in general

For a pretty cheesy strat, I used Great Stars with the Claw Talisman and spammed heavy jump attacks. Most of her normal dancing slash attacks completely miss you after you land, which leaves you with decent opens for another jump attack.

Sacred Nagakiba with Unsheathe R2 works great on her. You need a fast attack because her windows between combos are small. It also deals good poise damage so you can quickly switch into a Sacred Misericorde, use RKR and crit her for tons of damage, then back to Nagakiba. If you're close to her when she changes to second phase, you can Unsheathe twice during her animation. Second phase is easier, she uses a lot of spells and you can easily Unsheathe her once after most spells. Especially on the spells that have multiple charges, you roll into her when she uses her last charge and then free hit. When she waves her swords, roll back and stay away.

She's weak to poison, and even with 50 bleed on my weapons she can be bled reliably. Do not summon Leda, she has an attack that clears her poison. After a while I added a bleed uchigatana and offhand rivers of blood I switched to after poisoning her. Took maybe 45 minutes total ?

                                                                  • Anonymous

She is a very hard fight that will continue to punish you if you don't learn her move set. She has a few attacks that signal the end of her combo (usually an attack with both swords at the same time). Once you can recognize these attacks you open a lot more opportunities for a punish or a heal. The video guide on this page also helps identify these end of combo attacks.

                                                                              • Anonymous

Used the spiked palisade shield with no skill attached and keen nagakiba with piercing fang on it. The range of piercing fang meant I could usually throw it out if she was passive or after she did a combo and the bleed from bloodflame blade + the stance damage was reliable enough to kill her without a lot of scadutree levels I think I was at 4 or 5. Smaller weapons could use storm blade or beast's roar to punish her from a range similiar to piercing fang

                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                      • Anonymous

I'm both amazed and thankful that she doesn't have insane magic defense. I went into the DLC with a frost knight kind of build, so I was contemplating respeccing into a physical damage build after my first couple of runs at her. But the fight ended up being very manageable. Definitely a new favorite -- getting into her rhythm and dancing around her attacks is a thing of beauty.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

Found this a bit tricky with my Dex build (no summons run), so I had to switch away from my trusted straight sword build. It just lacked the reach.

                                                                                          So, for struggling Dex users:

Keen Godskin Stitcher with Impaling Thrust. You need to hit 3 thrusts to stagger the boss, leaving it open for a crit. Hit the crit, and *immediately* follow up with up to 2 impaling thrusts when the boss is down. That’s leaves Rellana almost staggered once it gets up— now you need to land one more to stagger again. Repeat. With some luck you can almost stunlock the boss so that it enters 2nd phase with very low HP. And that’s optimal since 2nd phase can be tricky. For that I recommend a Spelldrake or Pearldrake talisman (otherwise the nuke can instakill you).

With this strategy you have to be a bit greedy, since if you wait too long between impaling thrusts Rellana’s stagger meter recharges. So if needed, trade that third hit. It’s worth it.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

The bleeding flies reset the freezing debuff and you can proc freezing mist on her again. I finished the fight after 5th try in NG 4+ first time with lvl 133 and 30% dmg reductions

Her windows are super short that you basically need to trade hits which doesn't work when underleveled. If your weapon has enough range or a ranged art like Blasphemous Blade she's much more manageable.

If anybody is struggling with her and doesn't mind a kind of cheesy strat, Stormblade is absolutely great against her. Just keep spamming the ash of war ad fighting her at range to do consistent damage while keeping distance. She's much easier to fight when you're not trying to get in close to get some hits in, and Stormblade can do good damage (especially with Alexander's Shard) and even get a stance break or two in there for some good damage. The FP cost is also ridiculously low. She'll dodge one occasionally but you can fire these out faster than you can swing your greatsword.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

Fast casting time, and exploits both her biggest weaknesses at the same time, frost and lightning. Try to use it in the centre of the arena because it’s in water to increase the lightning damage. One more thing I’d recommend bringing a fire weapon or spell to undo her frostbite cooldown so you can use frostbite it again
