Putrescent Knight is a Legend Boss in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. Putrescent Knight is a knight and horse combo and is found in Fissure Depths. This is a fairly large boss that looks like a mutated skeleton. Be aware that this boss deals fairly large amounts of damage, and you may want to stack up your Scadutree Fragments before challenging it. This is an optional boss as players don't need to defeat it to advance in Shadow of the Erdtree.

The Putrescent Knight is a large boss, a combination of a normal-looking horse and a mutated undead skeleton knight. The knight wields a skeleton-shaped blade curved like a half-circle with grips on both sides. As the battle starts, the Putrescent Knight charges at you, leaping with its sword to stab you. Your immediate action is to roll and dodge this initial assault. The fight is made more challenging because of the horse, who appears to assist the knight from time to time.

The key to fighting the Putrescent Knight lies in a defensive strategy. The knight's attacks inflict very high damage and can defeat you with only a few hits. So, staying on the defensive is a must. Look for windows of opportunity to do heavy blows, primarily when the knight swings its blade with a heavy attack and takes a moment to recover. During these recovery periods, dodging and rolling followed by a quick counterattack is the most effective tactic.

Remain observant of your surroundings throughout the fight, as the horse will charge at you randomly. Even when at a distance from the knight, stay alert, as the knight will throw its blade like a boomerang, forcing you to dodge again. One of its strongest attacks is the Fire Barrage, where the knight levitates with its horse surrounded by dark shadows and hurls multiple blue fire projectiles around it. By staying in defense, carefully timing your heavy attacks, and staying aware of the horse’s and knight's presence, you can gradually wear down the Putrescent Knight.

Putrescent Knight Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Leaping Blade Strike The knight leaps from its horse while running and strikes the ground in your location. You can evade this attack by rolling to either left or right just before the knight lands its attack.
Double blade Swing At close range, the knight swings its blade downwards twice towards you. Can easily be evaded by rolling twice to either left or right.
Horse Charge While you're busy fighting the knight himself, the horse will sometimes charge at you. Check the surroundings, and once the horse appears from the ground, immediately roll to a side that's clear.
Spinning Cyclone Attack At mid-range, the knight will spin its body with its sword and hurl towards you. This can be evaded by rolling to the left twice. Or, you can roll towards the attack.
Swing from Horse The knight jumps on its horse and charges at you like a cavalry then swings. Can be evaded by rolling to the left just before the duo strikes you.
Blade Throw At long-range, the knight will throw its blade at you, acting like a boomerang. Rolling back twice can help avoid this attack.
Horse Roar When the knight and horse is overwhelmed, the horse roars and knocks you back. Once you see the horse about to roar, immediately roll back.
Blue Fire Barrage One of it's strongest attacks is the Fire Barrage which has the knight levitating from the ground with it's horse and hurling multiple fire projectiles around it. Once you see the foe levitating, immediately roll back multiple times to avoid the damage area. Failing this, you can jump over the flames. Time your jumps with any flames racing towards you across the ground.

This boss takes a few fights to learn but he's not that bad once you do, his health is really low. Once you learn his timings (some of his swings have agonizingly long delays) and that you have to JUMP the fire, not roll it, the fight becomes trivial. The most difficult move for me is either when he gets off the horse and spins at you with the horse attacking in between or when he throws his sword at you. The sword comes out FAST and feels designed to catch you when you stop to heal.

      • Anonymous

Probably one of the worst bosses in the game. Not because of damage, but because he's constantly running away from you. It's tedious and boring. The roll catches are also pretty cringe since all of his melee windups look the exact same (and I'm saying this as someone who thinks Mohg is a great boss) I beat him in 5 attempts solo so no "skill issue" here either

As a dex build, I struggled with keen beast claws, and keen unsheathe nagakiba. I switched to rolling sparks firespark perfume bottles and got it in two tries. Rolling sparks in some cases just shredded huge chunks of his HP off.

Elden Stars made this fight much easier. Bulked up so my mimic could tank then just spammed Elden Stars at every opening. Only took 4 of them.

Rings of Miquella destroy this boss; even the new rings incantation you find just before, from the leonine, can be used when he stands still preparing to cast the flames

When doing this guy online the horse will sometimes charge three times which seems to be a bug. The third time it charges happens while he is mounting his horse so there are two horses simultaneously.

                • Anonymous

As i jump off the bull's horns and land in the arena, the horse charges me. After drinking my phsyic and mentally preparing, it jumps off it's horse into an attack. I dodge the first two, but a 3rd attack instantly comes out after the 2nd one, i watch in awe as half my healthbar dissapears, and then the other 49% dissapears after its horse instantly runs me over before i even got up from the attack as miyazaki intended, i continue dodging the next 7 attacks in the chain before it finally whiffs my elbow once and i die, gazing up to the roof of the cave as my mimic looks down at me, thinking it truly has been a shadow of the erdtree

                  • Anonymous

Also really weak to bleed. I used Mohg's spear on him and he went down with the ash plus one critical attack.

                    • Anonymous

u can aggro him. he can get staggered if you set it up correctly. i used glintblade phalanx and savage lions claw. u dont have to play that passive just respect the spin and fire.

Multiple references to the previous games: he has the humanity sprite's face, is inside of a cave that looks like Midir's and is accessed like Rom's lake, and has the Orphan of Kos' weapon

Halo Scythe and its weapon art Miquella's Ring of Light works well. The Rings are homing-ish which really helps with how fast this boss moves. Didn't use a single attack, just dodged rolled until there was an opening to use the weapon art. Had the Mimic out to attract attention but any tanky spirit would probably work. Also used wonderous flask with recover HP and holy damage immediately after summoning mimic at the start of the fight.

Halo Scythe needs Faith of 15. With base class faith of 8, I got to 15 with Ruler Mask and Two Fingers Heirloom. I did have Halo Scythe at +9 already. Talismans were the Heirloom, Alexander Shard, Dragoncrest, and Two-Headed Turtle (for rolling).

As the Fextralife boss video notes, almost all his attacks come in pairs, except the fire pulses with are 3 in a row.

"kos on a horse" is conceptually a terrible idea, but they managed to make it quite fair (very weak to holy, the horse doesn't actually run around like crazy, very good hitboxes and lots of punksh windows). Hits hard yes, but very fun to solo.

                            • Very fun boss fight; managed to solo on NG+ using lightning infused (arena is covered with water) backhand blade and its blindspot AOW. Use blindspot to counter his melee attacks; roll to the side when the horse charges at you, and jump over blue fire barrages.

Holy damage works well on this guy, but I found that any strike weapon will do. Even a properly imbued cestus will eat through his health bar decently quickly. It also seems like he's immune (or at least fairly resistant) to most status effects, though I didn't try sleep or madness by the time I got him, so I suggest that arcane builds invest in an occult strike weapon if they don't already have one. Hope this helps!

actually neat boss, wish i had known you have to jump TOWARDS the fire to dodge it before spending two hours dying to that one attack

As a melee I found this horribly boring; A good comment suggested rolling backwards only and it helps a lot with being able to punish!

I didn't realize how weak to holy it was before a single cast of the envoy's greathorn weapon art took out 20% of its HP in one go. Had to switch weapon to not kill it too quickly. Fun fight overall once you understand it's pattern as most attacks are telegraphed and don't need to react on instinct.

                                      • Anonymous

Def. a interesting boss, frustrating at start but later after defeat its quite satisfying. Much spamming attacks, but he have some quite low hp pool. (he takes a lot of dmg, if you start to hit him)

For casters you can use rannis/rennas moon to avoid the aoe fire circle moving from outside to inside (very good opportunity to cast it)

Dont pref it for the Blue Fire Barrage since you can avoid the first aoe but most likely you get hit by the 2nd one. (maybe with good timing you can avoid both)

My favorite boss so far out of the divine beast, rellana and Golden hippo.

He seems incredibly unfair the first few tries until you understamd that the best strat is to be hyper aggro and stay near him as much as possible. His attacks do a lot of damage but they are highly telegraphed. Since to be hyper aggro means your dodges need to be on point I highly reccommend using the tear that gives you lightroll the diferencie is huge.

The fire attacks seem completely unavoidable at first until you realize you are meant to jump almost all of them, I legit beat him on the try I realized jumping was the way to go, you only have to dodge the fire attack that goes on a straight line.

Overall 9/10 boss, very frustrating at first due to his damage and seemingly unavoidable attacks but once you figure him out it's awesome!

1 direct-hit (or 2-3 whiffs) with Scarlet Aeonia will Rot the Boss. This Boss seems generically "weak" to nearly everything, it reminds me a lot of Maliketh or Radahn. I wish it had more health and did a little less damage. Cool fight, but win or lose it ends too quickly.

Another excelent exemple of a bad boss: Piss easy if you are ranged, but melee? Well, I hope you want to become a no-hit runner, because trading is impossible, also, janky hitboxes, you don't hit him despite being glued to him because the game decides you won't get to hit him.
Also, amazing that they had two years to see why people hated elden beast fight, attempted to correct it making it so you can use the horse in it, then make this fight, another one that you don't participate in it, just have to run constantly. Amazing how this dlc has a lot of good bosses, but also some very, very bad ones.

+25 Greatsword with holy infusion, Curved Sword Talisman, Deflecting Hardtear and Savage Lion's Claw, I managed to beat this boss in under 2 minutes, and completely skipped his second phase.

By deflecting every attack, you'll find clear openings for guard counterng, and with lthe Greatsword's swipe and it's range, you are guaranteed to hit him even when he's running away from you. Each guard counter went up to 2500 damage, and could go even beyond with Golden Vow and other buffs

Around 3 guard counters to stagger him, which at that point a critical hit will leave him almost without health. Finish up with the Savage Lion Claw

Using the martial arts weapon with Palm Blast with all the damage boosting talismans made short work of this guy. Tank the hit with the AOW as he is attacking you and he'll take so much damage.

Jump towards the direction of the flames when he uses them to doge them. Don't hit him when he's dismounted that's when he's the most dangerous, focus on dodging and hit him when he remounts after 3 lunges. Similar to Abyss Watchers keep an eye out for slams because they mean the end of a combo and a window to hit. Get your hits in but don't try to out aggression him you'll lose, he's miles faster than you and hits harder. He's weak to fire too I'm pretty sure.

Couldnt crack it with backhand blade dex build plus mimic so reached into my bag of old tricks and beat him first try with black knife tiche instead of mimic instead of having to change my build to some holy cheese

I just repeated jumping attacks with Giant Crusher + RKR until the ****er died (solo). Jump the blue flames and don't bother trying to attack when him and the horse separate and charge you from different directions, just dodge.
Didn't even feel good beating him, it felt like finally pooping out a 5 kilo turd when you're constipated. Not a victory, a good riddance. Next time I'll just summon Ashes and delete him.

honestly the part that bothers me the most about this boss is how he always holds his weapon above his head even if hes not going to slam down. always makes me second guess

                                                                • Anonymous

Same exact thing happened with the Scadutree Avatar. You think they would’ve learned this lesson the first time with Elden Beast, especially now that they’ve enabled torrent in that fight but I guess not.

                                                                  • Anonymous

He is not a hard boss, not even close, but one that won't stop running around paired with *yet another* stupid dodge check instakill true combo JUST TO MAKE SURE that you don't kill him in your first attempt. I thought better of you fromsoft. Rip xbox controller 2022-2024.

                                                                              • Anonymous

Not going to lie, I found this boss to be pretty lame. Most of his attacks seem to launch him well outside your range, so you spend a lot of time just chasing him. I did eventually get him (Strength/Faith, hell yeah), but I wouldn't say I had a lot of fun fighting him. Also, and I know this isn't true, but I'm halfway convinced that the Shadow Blessings actually have zero effect on your defenses. I was apparently rocking 75% damage negation across the board, and I was still getting chunked for a quarter of my health on every hit. I *shutter* to think of how much damage I'd be taking without the blessings.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                        • Anonymous

Jump over his fire and roll towards him not away. Standing in front of his horse usually triggers a horse stomp and 2 swings, which are very punishable.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                                              • Anonymous

He's one of those bosses who feels like BS until it clicks. The main thing is his attack timings having those nasty unpredictable delays. Admit it, you're just facetanking attacks over and over. The phase change flame attack can just be jumped. Stop eating every melee hit and survive that phase change and with some defense buff stacks you'll probably be fine. Also you get Multilayered Rings of Light right before this, which does excellent damage to him and has openings when he runs out of range.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

Honestly? Not as bad as everyone here made it out to be. I expected much worse. Took me around an hour to beat it with lvl 8 scadutree blessing. Once you learn the rhythm of his attacks, it begins to feel like a dance, kinda like fighting the godfrey shade.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Looks like holy and strike work pretty well. I used the wild strikes ash of war after he does is triple horse charge attack. The horse will life him out of water allowing you to get 3 strikes and a heavy follow up. That should stagger and the crit should push the knight into his ghostflame wave attack. I think you can jump over, but blocking significantly reduces the damage.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

You can get his pattern down and make him look like a fool quite consistently, but that doesn't change the fact that this is an Orphan wannabe that is extremely boring and unfun. It's a dodging simulator with a few attacks here and there whenever he has his tiny openings. Nonstop aggression and running away, huge arena wide AOE, obscene damage--all from a boss with a lame moveset that is the same five hits on repeat.
