I have a really good idea that will properly balance this ability that I think everyone can get behind. It's simple really, all Fromsoft needs to do is delete bloodhound step from the game, and permanently ban anyone who has ever even had it in their inventory just to be on the safe side. Unfortunately this will include me, but it's the only way to be safe from bloodhound step.
Seriously though if they just did something about the ability to cancel recovery animations via bloodhound step, quickstep and raptors of the mist they would be fine.

aight let me sum it up, there is a mf in the arena who oviously practices the same tactic over and over, uses thrusting sword with this, forces you to fight at close distance, spams r1s till you are scalet rotted if you die you get a dung simple as that so thats why i agree it should be disabled for pvp (in the arenas at least) couldnt hit her once unless she did a trade for the last attack.

If you use this skill whilst singing Stains Of Time from the MGRR OST until your vocal cords stop working you get a 20% speed boost

I like this ash of war, but I am so bad at using this. Instead of dodging the enemy’s attack like you’re supposed to, I always end up jumping to the enemy’s attack from a safe position with this skill and end up dying.
- Anonymous
I started a rouge build today with the bandit class. I immediately grabbed this and but it on my great knife. I just beat Margit after 3 tires and I'm going to get misericord. So far this thing has been fun to play with and made me use something other than just the ash.
- Anonymous
Wtf where they thinking when they put this in the game? "Let's make an objectively better version of an already problematic Ash"
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Another amazing ash of war nerfed because of the pvp crowd when 95% of players are pve players, just like stars of ruins
- Anonymous
It’s just inexcusable to use this. You’ve chosen the path of weakness and it will show in the rest of your life outcomes.
Doesn't make too much sense to put the i-frames for 30 fps... i'm all the way up to 60 fps 100% of the time and i assume most people as well. If you know your FPS rate chances are you are playing on PC and you get 60 anyways, and if you don't know you are playing on a console. (yes, i know ppl can still know their console's fps rate, but i'm not counting on that and you shouldn't as well)

I don't understand "Recovery frames while Right-hand attack is 1 iframe", can someone explain it to me?

>latest comment says previous comments are outdated, proceeds to talk about PvP
>previous comments saying BHS is terrible are about PvE
Some of y'all are nothing more than high-functioning peanuts. With how harsh the nerf was, there's barely any reason to use BHS over Quickstep right now, no matter the context.
- Anonymous
Most comments on this page are outdated. BHS is completely fine after the nerf. If you can't roll-catch them, it's probably because they're also using light rolls, which ARE still busted
After putting up with this in PvP, winning and loosing and making it to ng+5 figured why not I'll try it now.
The one thing tho, is not to over use it and to have a move set that really compliments the AoW.
I haven't Found a more Suitable AoW for the flowing sword, now I will actually be able to dance around people XD
Yeah, this is still stupid. It has almost no startup period and almost no recovery period, so there's not really a good way to punish it, honestly.
- Anonymous
I'm a simple man who likes dueling variety builds and skill opponents, and use whatever you like, I'll probably enjoy the fight
But if I see either this or Rivers, I'm gonna bust out those Stars of Ruin without any shame
- Anonymous
I did an entire playthrough with a pair of swords and nothing but bloodhound steps and attempted to kill everything in the game with nothing but melee attacks. I succeeded on everything except godfrey, Malenia and the final battle which required far more precision timing than I have the patience to learn so I used ashes and ranged attacks in those fights.
I do not think bloodhound step is very good. It was rare that it saved my butt where a Dodge would not have. And there are many times where it sends you in a completely random direction and can leave you hanging out to dry.
- Anonymous
Anybody have issues with BHS and quick step, but i put this issues in this way
Imagine fight Malenia, Maliketh or the f***ing elden pokemon in pvp, is it fun?
I think we all know the answer
The spam dash, hyper jump or TELEPORTATION is basically not fun allowed, if there are on players, on enemies or on bosses, makes no difference...
guys, elden ring have bosses more mobile than bloodborne bosses, and bloodborne have dash instead of roll when fighting!
(i still likes this two game, and i go on ng+2 on elden ring, but sometime i think the speed difference are not good for the health this game)
- Anonymous
Ash is still pretty crazy, but you need to dedicate yourself to it with light armor and weapons so it balances out
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Man this thing must have been insane if its still this good even after a nerf. Granted I'm using it on a light load; which makes it pretty balanced I suppose
- Anonymous
I havent noticed the nerf as a light load build. Still goes further than a dodge, and more I-frames. 3-4 consecutive uses starts to have less distance, but just roll every 1 or 2 BHS.
They nerfed this to the point of it being quickstep. what a ****ing joke
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Honestly at this point, if you’re going to go for a light load to get the most out of this Ash of War now, you’re better off just rolling with a vanilla light load. It’s basically a free BHS
- Anonymous
This only way i can survive against point blank Malenia's waterflow, i have difficult time going against her after BHS nerfed, might try frost pot i guess.
- Anonymous
imo this was kinda overnerfed. it doesn't really offer anything that quickstep can't do better. they should restore the travel distance it used to have, while keeping the diminishing returns when spammed.
- Anonymous
This is so broken than even after nerf is still broken. And I love it. Rolling is beta male behaviour. Sigma males glides instead.
BHS + Bleed For life.
- Anonymous
The real reason this was nerfed was cause Miyazaki was angry people were using it to get passed the lake of rot.
- Anonymous
Awesome skill, annoying as hell to deal with in pvp with spammers...i get it though, it works. On that same note, if i see you spamming this in pvp against me i will hit your ass with rotten breathe and mohg/vykes spear lol
- Anonymous
While the nerf was needed. I wonder, original bloodhound step locked to small weapons only, maybe even just daggers, would have been pretty balanced, especially if it reverted to nerfed form for PVP only.
- Anonymous
I came for the salt, but not as much as I expected, guess it truly was a hated skill.
- Anonymous
Since BHS is less effective when used consecutively, how do I reset it?
- Anonymous
You mean… you’re not saying… I can actually play Elden Ring again??!!??!!
- Anonymous
Was it nerfed enough? Too much? What's the next op skill that needs to be addressed?
Huh, didn't expect them to patch tears of denial back into the game.
- Anonymous
This just got nerfed in version 1.06. Yet another piece of **** nerf from the developer and Steam ... so just search for firewall in Windows and block Steam and steamweb... Microsoft will immediately add another steam application which is unblocked - delete it. Like 10 of my favorite weapons got nerfed since the release of the game and I'm sick of that bullshit.
- Anonymous
Attention all elden ring gamers: Bloodhound's Step is now legalised!!!!!!
- Anonymous
Instead of making Bloodborne 60 fps, they nerf this. Just saying.
- Anonymous
Goes without saying this AoW is over-powered for both PvE and PvP. For the single-player side of things though, feel free to use it as much as you want, you paid 60 dollars for the game so you get to play it however. Go wild.
But for PvP, it does seem quite unfair. It stalls fights and makes them a chore, which is not good. I feel it needs to be nerfed in some way, but also not make it completely useless.
I've heard it was nerfed in the recent 1.06 patch, but I haven't checked the patch-notes yet so not sure in what way.

the only way to dodge dragon breath attacks in a hallway. Probably not even guarenteed. Its reputation was ruined by ppl that use it to stall and get free heals

For duels i actually recommend quickstep. the travel distance of BHS makes it too difficult for you to be on the offensive

Bloodhound step is like playing bloodborne while everyone else is trapped playing dark souls.

The virgin bloodhound step vs. the honest quickstep
Remember back when we though quickstep was bad in ds3? Things sure do change...

My fellow Americans… many of you don’t seem to understand that, in previous titles, PvP actually BECOMES the game. Once you’ve exhausted the 300 hours of content - all of which is absolutely stunning - you’ll slide into PvP’s DMs out of sheer boredom and realize there is an entire other world and community within the Souls games. This is why we are so upset with From’s casual attitude toward Elden Ring’s PvP - PvP is what gives these games their longevity and is a HUGE part of why the community is so intense. What disappoints us is that it seems - to me - that From has taken their 13 million balls and gone home. They’re unmotivated to fix the very obvious problems with PvP because… well, they sold 13 million copies, who cares? It seems like even THEY have failed to understand that it is primarily PvP players who give their games an unrelenting lifespan and that it is primarily PvP players that check phantom ranges, tier out the weapon movesets, build parry-frame spreadsheets, etc. The “it’s primarily a single-player game, stop whining” people simply haven’t hit that wall of boredom yet that forces them into just trying PvP “for the hell of it.” Maybe they never will. But if you don’t understand why people are so upset about From’s lack of accountability regarding the seemingly endless list of broken mechanics that have RUINED the PvP experience for a great number of Souls veterans that have supported the online community for literally a decade, it’s because you haven’t tried it yet (and, if you want my advice, do NOT start with this as your first PvP experience - I would strongly recommend DS3 or DS2 [often cited as the preeminent Souls PvP experience, though I disagree]). It’s been months… to have no fixes at ALL to legitimate PvP issues - ESPECIALLY after the PvP-less Sekiro (a fantastic game) - is extremely disheartening and honestly makes me nervous about the future direction of FromSoft’s priorities moving forward.
- Anonymous
I get how this skill is busted and how it breaks PvP, I havent done any PvP yet and mostly play PvE and I use it for two things aside from Malenia (mostly because I despise that terrible fight and don't give a **** about using broken stuff there) and Mohg on my first playthrough.
1. Traversal of areas that slow your movement and don't allow for Torrent, the same broken agility is a godsend in GTFOing out of a bad situation where you're movement is otherwise slowed. Saved my ass a few times dealing with the rot lake in the Haligtree.
2. As a tool for dodging specific attacks. When I fought Placidusax recently on my second playthrough I was using an off-hand +23 Magic Cane Sword with BHS (for dual-wielding with my SoNaF) for dealing with the divebomb from the storm cloud and the knock-off Midir lasers.
Whenever he'd vanish I'd quickly two-hand my BHS weapon, BHS through the attack and stop two-handing it when it was clear. So it wasn't a crutch but rather a tool used for dealing with specific things in a fight. Still had to learn the other things you know.
Mohg will probably see BHS use as a means to safely traverse the cheap Bloodflame he spams all over the place.
When I eventually PvP I'll try and avoid using BHS, but as a means of dealing with select things in PvE it's an amazing tool.
- Anonymous
PVPer here. Any other PVPers not find BHS hard to deal with? Feel like it increases your opponents survivability but it makes it harder for them to be on the offensive because of the travel range imo.
Have fought many duels and invasions against BHS users but don't really feel the same threat level from them as opposed to something like Vykes war spear which has very good atk speed and range
- Anonymous
I like invading ganks on the step on my OP build and watching the host use this to try and escape after I killed his cooperators, River of blood user one, and stars of ruin mage 2.
- Anonymous
People complaining about the balance act like Elden Ring is some sort of hardcore pvp E-sport and not a predominantly single/co-op game.
“Can’t let people have fun because they are using a broken build.” They say before using some broken builds of their own. Bunch of hypocrites I say.

Make a nurf to bloodhound step if you use it 10 times your leg breaks and you slip and die

Why do souls "veterans" (whatever thats supposed to mean) always have to be against accessibility options? It's not like your games are going away or that youre being affected if other people can finally enjoy the same experience. There's nothing wrong with bhs just because you dont like it and hate other gamers who arent as skilled as you. If you think it's op in pve then you should stop complaining because there's nothing with using it and it is a valid way to play and experince the amazing open world of elden ring and if you're fighting against it in pvp then just wait it out? Like, it's really not that hard if you think about it for a sec. I dont really play pvp, actually I hate invadrs and invasions as a mechanic but even I could figure it out c'mon now. You can do better without trying to sacrifice other peoples enjoyment of the game like a bunch of basement dwelling crybabies.
tl;dr stop whining and let others enjoy the game

The problem doesn't lie in the fact that you can't counter it efficiently. The problem lies in the fact that BHS users control the pace of a fight with near zero consequences. It's basically a "get out of jail" card from any conflict:
Ganked? BHS. Low health? BHS and heal; they can't catch up unless they're also using BHS. Repositioning? Previous point minus the healing. Low FP? BHS and sip on the blue juice. Foe running away? BHS. Difficult hitboxes? BHS. Magic spam? BHS. You get the picture.
- Anonymous
The smoke effect when using this is actually just the BHS users shaking off the dust that's accumulated from sitting in their basement for too long!
- Anonymous
Completely agree with a couple of posts down: the fact that this OBVIOUSLY BROKEN mechanic hasn’t been touched is, in my mind, proof that From is moving decidedly towards a more casual experience. Way of the world, I suppose - brings an opportunity for a new developer to revitalize the fundamental tactics and playstyle of Soulslike games, hopefully someone can fill the void.
- Anonymous
you dont use bloodhound's step because your a respectable human being.
i dont use bloodhound's step because its really hard to dodge by pressing L2 instead of O
we are NOT the same
You can get this by dying to the Virgin abductor in the academy, being transported to the manor, then jumping to the main area, make it to the bloodhound knight, then you can either take it off the bloodhound claws that he drops or duplicate the ash at the blacksmith
- Anonymous
Looks garbage compared to Old Hunter Bone Blink. You tried to hide that reused quickstep animation and faaaaaailed
- Anonymous
honestly bring back the old hunters bone animation for this, take off the extra i-frames and make this a cool dodge with high range and an FP cost, maybe with an aggressive follow-up attack to reward aggression, instead of a copy paste overpowered quickstep.
- Anonymous
Everyone talks about how awful it is in PvP
But no one talks about how it's my favourite transversal tool for areas you don't like and can't use a horse in!
You need to walk up to Fia but don't wanna spend a few minutes holding the run button? Bloodhound Step!
Wanna get through the lake of rot? Bloodhound step, nyoom!
- Anonymous
The fact that this remains in the game and unchanged since release makes me think Fromsoft is changing their views on difficulty, maybe trying to appeal to a much larger audience. This thing completely breaking PvP is one thing but if you use this you don't have to learn any patterns, attacks, timing of the enemies just spam this and win, which goes against the whole point of their games.
- Anonymous
I actually love this skill - it lets me know immediately who is and isn’t an OG, and who will or won’t get a Point Down afterwards.
- Anonymous
This skill allowed me to beat Melania as an int spellcaster. Made it so that I was able to negate waterfowl dance. BHS away on the first jump, away on the second jump and towards her for the 3rd jump and she goes right over your head.

Came here for the Wesker-style blink on tap, and instead got a stretched out quickstep animation that goes invisible for no discernable reason, with obnoxiously long iframes, huge travel distance and no style whatsoever.
Devs, you already got this right years ago, so Old hunter bone this bad boy, and for gods sake make Quickstep the default dodge at light equip load, so people have an actual incentive to pack light and risk getting staggered by an imps fart two zones away.

Funny seeing all these comments on explaining how bhs should get a well deserved nerf and the dislikes on it are huge. just exposes the people who use it.
- Anonymous
Yeah, I'm backing out anytime I see someone use this garbage in pvp. Nothing else is nearly as broken. Invaders I won't judge because they're getting ganked. But duels, yeah you're pretty pathetic.
- Anonymous
Would be cool if it was like bloodhound’s finesse, except a lesser version. The stepping might be fun since mobility is a lot of fun, but it’s trivialized a lot of encounters for me. Sucks that it’s one of the few that can go on whips, otherwise I wouldn’t be here right now lol
- Anonymous
Lord forgive me, but I've no option... I just want to cosplay Darriwil...
- Anonymous
I don't get the consistency. Vow of the Indomitable is 20FP and you can't move, this is 5FP and the best dodge in the game. One-Eye Greatshield is a sluggish, stamina-hungry beast with large arming times and recovery times, but only hits mildly harder than Moonveil which has 'R2 swing' warmup times and virtually no recovery time. Double Slice is a perfectly good Ash of War which is appropriately slowed down when used on heavier weapons, but then Corpse Piler is the same move with more range, more damage, massive bleed, and the quick version of the animation.
- Anonymous
There are literally zero methods of consistently countering this without building around it. When an ability warps the fabric of the game so much that you need a specifically tailored build (i.e. fingerprint shield poke mentioned below) to beat it, it needs to be tweaked. So sad that you see people crutching on all of the same overpowered skills (RoB, Moonveil, BHS, etc) and still act like it’s not a problem just because they’re biased towards it. This skill allows you to deal with literally any problem thrown at you be it AoEs, lingering hitboxes, any sort of melee attack or AoW, spells, or even rushing someone down as it outspeeds running. I actively challenge anyone to come up with a realistic and accessible way of countering this. Definitely needs a fix badly.
- Anonymous
a lot of the problems people have with this game would be fixed if they stopped playing pvp
- Anonymous
The problem with removing BHS is that it makes large AOE extremely OP like dragon incantations.
- Anonymous
Just met a host during coop who did nothing but run away using this and expected the other summon and me to do all the work. Just remove this from the game.
- Anonymous
Bloodhound step is the best PvP skill. I recommend everyone to use it

brb gonna beat the game using this and then brag about how I beat Elden Ring and it wasn't so bad LMAO
- Anonymous
So much cope coming from BHS haters lol.
PS i dont even need BHS even though its in my invasion toolkit. The only time it gets used is when hosts start running marathons.
- Anonymous
What fixes Bloodhound Step enough WITHOUT killing it?
Restricting it to Daggers and Claws à la how Quickstep was in DS3 (sans the Thrall Axe)?
Perhaps removing 1 or 2 iframes? Adding a small delay between casts?
FP cost raised to 8? Double the stamina cost to 24 (=2 rolls)?
- Anonymous
Interviewer: how do you have fun? Pvp sweat: by bullying people in a game i'm not good at. Interviewer: right...
I block all players on Steam who use this skill. Even if I'm winning and suddenly the opponent switches weapons and starts using BHS. I do the same with players who use dual vyke, dual run-pike-pokers and sleep builds.
