Smoldering Church Walkthrough
To claim the two cookbooks available in this area, loot the remains that are resting on the side of the church. You should find Missionary's Cookbook (3) and Nomadic Warrior's Cookbook (14),
Before entering the church, prepare for battle as the NPC invader Anastasia, Tarnished-Eater shows up for battle. She deals quick attacks with her greataxe and can dodge, so time your attacks well. You will gain Sacred Scorpion Charm and Furlcalling Finger Remedy.
After the fight, you can rest at the Site of Grace found in the far end of the Smoldering Church and loot the two corpses next to it for some cookbooks.

What's going on with this place? The atmosphere around it is suddenly really creepy and yet there's very little here.

I think the 1.3 patch may have moved the Grace slightly. It used to be closer to the entryway, now it's right beside the two corpses. Also, you can bypass dealing with Anastasia first if you enter the church from the side or the back - the approach to the church is what will summon her. That way you can safely fight her without having to trek all the way back.
