Forge of the Giants

The ever-burning Forge of the Fire Giants, said to hold the power to burn the Erdtree itself.

Forge of the Giants is a Location in Elden Ring. The Forge of the Giants is found in Mountaintops of the Giants. Come from the south and pay attention to the higher ground areas, you will see a giant cauldron next to a mountain shaped like a ramp. Climb that mountain up and use the frozen chain as a bridge to approach the top of the cauldron. Once there, you'll have reached the Forge. Map Link

  • Do not attempt to explore the center down below, as it will result in Instant Death. There's a site of grace that can be found rounding the left edge of the forge at the end of it right before you reach the crack.
  • [!] Accessing Farum Azula can lock you out of Brother Corhyn / Goldmask quest if you aren't far enough.

Forge of the Giants Walkthrough

There's nothing to loot or explore in the Forge of the Giants other than reach the Site of Grace at the end of the left edge. (Except for a single smoldering butterfly partway around the edge to the right.) Once you reached the edge, don't attempt to explore the center of the forge as it will result in instant death. The only relevant thing to do here, is to talk to Melina in that Site of Grace. She will ask you if you are ready to commit to a sin, in which if you accept, after a few cinematics you will be teleported to Crumbling Farum Azula. Before accepting, it is recommended that your character is around Lvl 100+ otherwise this area might be a bit heavy for you.

If you've inherited the Frenzied Flame, then Melina won't show up at this stage, instead there will be an option to "Listen to the sounds of flame" at the site of grace. After which you'll be teleported to Crumbling Farum Azula all the same.

Be sure to finish or skip the cutscene. Quitting during the cutscene will interrupt the telportation process and you might not be able to progress to NG+. If the cutscene is interrupted, attempt to rest at the Forge of the Giants site of grace again. It should re-trigger the cutscene and teleportation process.

note: triggering the cutscene can fail nepheli's quest if you haven't spoken to her and killed omenkiller at the albinauric village yet

Does burning the tree here change the tree's appearance in the open world, or does that only happen after you kill Maliketh?

        • Anonymous

Is it just ME, or does it stress other players the F-out when you've climbed most of the chain to get to the top of the forge and those last 2 steep links of chain look like they're gonna make you fall to your death? lol
EVERY TIME it stresses me out.

          • People crying about dying in a souls game is just priceless
Even funnier when they say they died TWICE because of the same thing on the EXACT same place, didn't you learn anything from the first time you fell down there?
Just don't go jumping in random fiery pits
That's not bad design, you're just plain stupid, what did you expect? A ****ing warning sign?

"Oh but before in Mt. Gelmir lava didn't killed me"
Like many other things in the game that get progressively harder, and there are tons of places that kill you instantly without any warning
If you don't like that you shouldn't even play any FromSoft game

A page with things to do before turning on the forge would be needed, such as exhausting all dialogues with Melina.

              • Anonymous

For graphical reasons only, I wish there were a way to proceed without burning the tree. 1) it looks better golden, 2) no annoying ash particles.

                • Anonymous

Some events DO lock when you simply light the tree with Melina. Bro Corwhyn. If this man never left the round table, his stuff and bearing will be dropped on his spot. He dies and questline ends. This is not the case if you progressed him a little and got him to transfer.( observed recently during a run). Whatever you get locked out of is easily done during ng+, if you really focus on those questlines.

Is the idea that the flame of ruin is the only thing hot enough to burn the Erdtree? Or is it that it contains enough fire to completely smother it?

                    • for anyone wondering: lighting the flame IS NOT the same as burning the erdtree. you can go back and complete the majority of quests in-game BEFORE you kill the 'final boss' of farum azula, maliketh. the two exceptions to this is dung-eaters quest (you will fail it since leyndell is now covered in ash and 2 of the 5 seedbed curses are now unobtainable) as well as coryhns quest.

                      • Anonymous

Do I get locked out of doing anything after I light the flame? Or will I still be able to do everything I could do before I lit it up?

                        • Anonymous

The forge is extremely bugged. There's absolute zero reason for instant death upon making a regular jump and a complete lack of environmental threats (the fire is smoldering).

                          • Anonymous

I'm surprised you can get to the Site of Grace at the forge without 3d zig zagging four times, jump dying twice and losing my boss runes.

I've been looking around for answers to no avail, so if any of y'all know or have theories let me know. I can't get over the fact that the forge is cracked and nearly completely broken. The structure itself is a crucible looking thing, and crucibles are made to withstand the fires of a kiln. To break one isn't a terribly difficult thing to do, but it does require a lot of heat or abuse. Was it broken when the giants were hunted? If it was and they Golden Order saw it as blasphemous, why not destroy it outright? Then you wouldn't have to leave a giant alive to protect it. If it was broken with use, what were they making? Sorry if there's an easy explanation I'm not seeing.

spoiler: I never got why you gotta burn the erdtree twice, like was the first time not enough? I guess it's the only way to get the rune of death but why does Melina say that the forge will burn the thorns away? Or am I dumb and she never said so?

Is the only way to get to Crumbling Farum Azula via this path? Do I really have to commit to burning the tree to get there? Im only after ther Smithing Stone Bell which is there apparently. I do not want to burn the tree for my storyline ending.

Sooo what happens if you inherit the Frenzied Flame, resulting in ****ing off Melina. Then proceed to free yourself from the Three Fingers' grasp by using the Miquella's needle. And THEN attempt burning the erdtree? Do you 'Listen to the flame' regardless of the fact that you middle finger'd the Three Fingers? Despite the fact that you're not part of the Frenzied Flame faction you still have inherited the Frenzied Flame and thus wield its power?

Anyone actually able to get on the invisible path near the grace site? I see a bunch of messages out in the distance that you can reach by jumping to, but also tons of spirits just jumping to their deaths, any hint as to how to go over there or is it a glitch or something?

I've noticed an invisible path at the side of the forge, a number pf death signs & messages, anyone dared venture up there?

To all the people that think pointing out flaws is somehow a virtuous act, just remember that a couple hundred of people in Japan worked thousands of hours so we could have a ****ing near endless souls game, at a very high level of quality (not perfect but far from bad), for 60-70 dollars. Even if you put 100 hours into it, never mind the literal 1000’s some of us play, from soft values your time a gigantic amount more than any job you have ever worked, any movie or concert you have ever seen and all the sex you have had in your life combined. It’s great you don’t like parts of the game, but the devs aren’t ****ing perfection personified. They however, have made Millions of people happy. And that is more than most of us can or will ever do. That is also a valid reason to give the game a 10 out of 10. Even with the bugs, I am happy I got to play this game when I did. The annoyance faded in minutes and the joy of playing this game kept shining through it. It is extremely obvious that they have an infinite amount of things that could go wrong with a game this packed with content. They have been doing a great job trying to balance the thing and if they took your advice and didn’t release it until it was flawless, it’s likely we would never have received it. Every single open world game that people compare to this saying they are perfectly polished are most definitely, not. Also, maybe try venting to other people who have similar issues if you aren’t looking for an argument. Coming on here to do it is stupid. Of course people are gonna **** on you.

So was Melina full of crap about needing a sacrifice to set the tree aflame? Why can the Lord of Frenzy do it himself?

                                            • Anonymous

I did not get the cutscene after resting at the site of grace. Was this caused by possibly going out of order? I imagine so since I actually cleared to this without doing Caelid. If I go beat radahn and come back I hope the cut scene will happen and I didn't basically lock myself out of progressing.

                                              • Anonymous

Could you theoretically get Melina to sacrifice herself, then inherit the frenzy flame afterwards? I misread somewhere that Malenia will sacrifice herself for you and am now curious.

                                                • Darn, I tried to get to the 3 Fingers to save Melina and planned to needle myself out the frenzy curse after, but you must rest at the Grace to start the cutscene for both options. As you rest to the grace she tells you she doesn't trust you anymore, tells you she'll try to kill you when becoming Elden Lord and leave. Backed-up my save because both options seem that Melina will die. Rip waifu, can't even sacrifice myself for her.

They should have made the forge look hotter, in the middle, it looks like a campfire 20 minutes from burning out, not something hot enough to burn the erdtree

                                                    • Anonymous

What a hot topic of debate...get it?....

                                                      Badumtiss

Sorry fellow tarnished, but i think this was intended. Dont need a lore video to identify the origins of grace sites. Nor should you need vaati to explain to u that the giant bowl of fire in the late game area might be deadly.

Like someone else mentioned, it’d be handy to add a list of all quests and NPC/Invader interactions that will be locked once you complete this area

                                                        • Anonymous

I'm honestly surprised by how defensive people seem to get about people pointing out issues with the game. There's no good visual indicator that the area is deadly (or deadlier than any other area in the game you can survive). They could've just saved you the trouble and placed the site of grace on the other side, and saved you some confusion. They didn't. How dare we point that out. And why the **** do I need to trigger this via grace - which makes it incredibly ****y, because you have no idea which sites of grace you have to rest at in order to progress quests, and some of them only have those triggers, after incredibly specific sequences of events, like with nepheli loux.

I shouldn't have to watch a gosh darn diddly vaatividya to get a lore reason as to why a pot of embers kills me when they can find literally any other way of making that clear, or just putting a god damn lid on it. Why does reading this seem to hurt some people's feelings? It feels like stockholm syndrome at some points. I genuinely want to hear the reason why you should be able to know this **** kills you ahead of time.

To those of you downvoting the guys who died in the pit, I'd like to point out that we walked on hotter looking lava on Mt. Gelmir taking barely 75 damage every five seconds. It is entirely reasonable to assume that this would be the same.

There seems to be a minor bug where apon talking to melina but not burn the tree, and then level up and leave. When you talk to melina again she will not appear but her voice lines will still play. Quitting and coming back resolves this

                                                                • Anonymous

I've literally ran through lava, and you're telling me a clay pot with a few embers and mostly ash kills me faster? I'm a tarnished, not an asthmatic, pot ash shouldn't kill me. And then they even put the god damn grace on the other side? Where I can't see it against the bright sky? Elden ring isn't perfect. Come at me, scrub lord lol.

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Yeah, after reading all the comments for this, I think we can all agree that this game was probably made by their B Team. Miyazaki wouldn’t have made something this dumb and sloppy. Too many instances of broken quests in this game and it’s embarrassing to see this game getting 10/10 scores when other open world games are actually polished and have better performance.

                                                                      • Anonymous

i get the feeling miyazaki wasnt fully involved in making this game, it feels like a shell of a souls game

Burning the erd tree also burns roundtable hold. I didn't see it mentioned here so I thought I should bring it up. If you're doing Fia's quest, make sure you progress to where she leaves before burning the tree, because she disappears when you burn it. Not a big deal for me since I'm going for a different ending, but it could impact some other players.

Or once I reach this area I'm already locked into progression towards Farum Azula/Ashen Capital?

                                                                                      • Anonymous

This is so retarded. All indications point to the player going down, yet the entire area is an instant death field. Did the b team design elden ring as well? Just pathetic.

I was very confused what I was supposed to do until I noticed the extra selection while at the grace.
