It is here, at the Church of Vows, that the great houses of the Erdtree and the Moon were joined by the matrimonial bond between red-haired Radagon and Rennala of the Full Moon. That is why it holds in view the monuments of both houses, the Erdtree of the Capital and the Academy of Raya Lucaria.

It can be accessed by following the roads heading north along the eastern landmass. An alternate route is available by way of a Waygate from Raya Lucaria Academy. Church of Vows Walkthrough

Upon arrival, you are greeted by Miriel, Pastor of Vows, guardian of the church. Upon your first meeting, Miriel will tell the story of the church and offer to share its knowledge on Sorceries, Incantations, as well as Lore related to Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon and Lord Radagon.

Check the right side of the church's entrance for a chest containing the Golden Tailoring Tools and Gold Sewing Needle key items.

Located at the center of the church, a statue of Lady Rennala stands out. Player's can interact with the statue as an "Atone" option is displayed. If you are in possession of a Celestial Dew, atoning for your sins will reverse any antagonizations you have with NPCs, whether caused by accident or on purpose, making them friendly again. However, if the NPC has been killed atonement will not revive them. Celestial Dews are key items obtained from various sources. For details, see the Celestial Dew page.

There is a Bell Bearing Hunter boss that can be fought at the church if you come in during night time. It drops the Meat Peddler's Bell Bearing upon defeat. If you are having trouble spawning the boss, rest at the Site of Grace outside, advance til night and then rest once more. The boss should spawn afterwards.

If you can't get the boss to spawn, try exhausting all of Miriel's dialogue (including showing him the celestial dew), rest at the grace, pass time until night, get up from the grace and rest again. That's what worked for me.

      • Anonymous

It's not mentioned here but it seems like having items that might affect you multiplayer wise, like having the blue cipher ring active, seems to cause the bell-bearing hunter to not spawn. I think that only counts for when the game is making an attempt to establish a multiplayer session, but I would advise you just disable such items to fully prevent it causing issues.

I wasn't able to get the boss to spawn after multiple attempts, doing all that was suggested, then gave up. Picked up a celestial dew a few days later and remembered I hadn't killed the boss at the church of vows so I went back and sure enough, something had happened that made it spawn intantly when I set it to night and rested at the grace again. Don't know if it has anything to do with the item, but I thought I'd mention it.

The Nox people are masters of mind control. They invented puppetry using starlight shards, and church of vows+Celestial Dew is a global Psychic Dominator that no one can resist, including demigod like Ranni, even if she can resist Seluvis's Potion.

I noticed the resemblance between the statue at the back of the church that gives the Atone prompt and Nox swordstress the first time I used it.
I've just been to Nokstella and now I know the statue does depict a swordstress. There are identical statues everywhere, I'm curious as to the connection between the church of vows and Nokstella and why its a statue of a swordstress when you'd think the night maidens would be more closely linked to the idea of atonement, with the description for the twin crown saying it "indicates the highest clerical rank" ?

So not sure if it was a bug or what but I was able to revive Jar-Bairn by atoning a few days ago.

Playing through for the third time (Intended Fth/Str build turned big ****-off Str/End MFer), and I made the mistake of casually setting aside the controller while standing near JB. Needless to say the poor little guy was instantly obliterated by my Heavy Giant-Crusher+18ish....

After kicking myself for making a day 1 Fromsoft mistake, I F.O. from the now rampaging pots (out of courtesy of course) and exit out to restore my backup save. Find out I apparently turned off auto backup, so out of desperation I took a stab at atoning.

Once I got back, JB was just sitting there happy as Bobby Hill. No idea why it worked. Maybe because like, it's technically killing a child character and that's... a thing, right? That games aren't supposed to have straight murderable kids in them? So by making him resurrectable it's kinda of a gray area for social sensibilities and all that?

Suppose I could test it out myself but I'm not going to do that, so I'm passing the information along. Before anyone asks I'm positive that I killed JBH 'cause he gave me the "cracked my heart" spiel. Also, I only exited out to the PSN menu and switched back a minute later, so it's not like I quit out before it saved or anything....

Not really sure it's worth posting so long after release, but it's interesting to note that if you look to the Erdtree from the Church of Vows at night (and during clear weather), the Erdtree eclipses the moon from this location. Looking in the opposite direction, the church is also perfectly aligned with Rennala's bedchamber.

Though somewhat peculiar, the Giant's Forge lies in this path as well... If you set beacons at each Raya Lucaria Grand Library, the Church of Vows, the center of the Erdtree (a bit tricky to gauge where exactly that is based on the map), and the center of the Giant's Forge, then stand at the far edge of the kiln, you can see that the beacons all clump together on the compass at the top of the screen.

This got me curious about other possible alignments on the map, and I've actually found a few other interesting examples, though none as big as this. Another thing, I can't help but notice the way the Erdtree and the moon are juxtaposed from Raya Lucaria or the Church of Vows resembles the design of Radahn and Rykard's Great Runes.

A comment says the statue at the church is Rennala wearing a different funny hat, the statue is what I came to ask about, the hat on the statue is very similar to the Nox swordstress crown. I'm standing next to the statue now getting my fashion souls on and the only slight difference is under the chin and the cloth hanging from the back. Is there any connection in the lore between the Nox swordstress and Nox night maidens and Rennala if that really is a statue of her?

I really appreciate your sensitivity in referring to Miriel as an “it.” We really cannot know for sure if Miriel is male, female, or other since we cannot ask it its pronouns. I mean he has a male sounding voice (or at least what “society” considers a “male” “voice”) but we really cannot know for sure. Best not to assume. Glad to see a website that is at the forefront of combating gender stereotypes and transphobia.

Well, I was lied to, it doesn't revive NPCs. I had to kill Haight after I accidentally hit him, and then I find out I couldn't.

coming to post this again. This section of the wiki "atoning for your sins will revive any Merchant NPCs that you have killed, whether by accident or on purpose" is still incorrect. the church of vows does not revive *any* NPC's. it simply de-aggro's them or fixes the questline if they have been angered

i have killed every possible NPC in my save (NG+3) and not a single time was i able to atone for my "Sins" this includes all (currently known) nomadic/hermit merchants, NPC's, and quest givers

where this information came from i have no idea, but its straight up just incorrect

Anyone know if "atoning" at the church of vows will make Melina forgive you after you took in the flame of frenzy and then burnt the tree down?

Currently Absolution does not revive NPCs you've killed. It only resets hostility from friendly NPCs you've damaged.
I'm not sure if this is a bug or if Absolution reviving NPCs was a bug that has now been fixed.

I don't think this brings things back to life if you have killed them im sure it just stops then hating if u have hit them accedently

You can't revive NPCs if you've killed them. Not Gostoc, not Seluvis, not even the merchants. NO ONE comes back to life here. This church is for fixing aggression if you ATTACKED someone and bailed. Or in certain situations like fixing your mistake siding with Seluvis to give Ranni a potion. I'm not sure why this rumor got spread but it needs to end.

Anyone notice that the statue looks like a nox swordstress, at least helmet-wise? Might have lore implications.

Killed all the nomadic merchants so I could give their bells to the shrine husk for convenience’s sake thinking I could just revive them later. After I atoned none of them came back to life. I wouldn’t have done this in hindsight if i knew I couldn’t revive them. The world feels a lot emptier now.

I wonder if you can revive Gostoc and Kenneth. I killed them both since in the previous playthrough none of them did anything for the whole game. And Kenneth drops a Golden Seed, which is pretty important.

Can't you merely atone for having angered npc's, instead of being able to revive them?

i read in one of the wikis that betraying ranni with seluvis, can be negated by the dew. but seluvis remains dead and lootable.

varre supposedly can't be revived when killed.

sellen can be revived or pacified.

Right, so I encountered a Boss called the Bell Bearing Hunter at night time when I went to hand in the Giant's Prayerbook to Miriel. He dropped the Meat Peddler's Bell Bearing. Which apparently gives you access to Sliver of Meat, Lump of Meat, and Turtle Neck Meat.

Was not expecting that, shoulda known better after the Warmaster Shack.
