Tree Sentinels are Field Bosses in Elden Ring. These heavily armored knights ride large steeds and carry powerful halberds. Although players are likely to encounter one in their first steps out into the Lands Between, it's wise to leave it be at first and return stronger and more experienced. They are optional bosses, as players don't need to defeat them in order to advance in Elden Ring.
The living rampart of the Erdtree, the Tree Sentinels are the standard to which all defenders of the Erdtree aspire.
Where to find Tree Sentinel in Elden Ring
Tree Sentinel can be found in:
Tree Sentinel Combat information
- Stance: 80
- Parryable: Yes
- Immune to critical attacks. Breaking its stance or parrying it will only stun it briefly. Hitting him in this state pushes him back and deals 10% more damage.
Negations (or Absorptions)
The negation numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example, if a negation is 60, 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% will be negated. Bigger number = less damage. A negation of 100 means no damage goes through, and a negation of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.

Tree Sentinel Fight Strategy
The Best Tips for Tree Sentinel:
- Fighting on horseback is a great option for extra mobility and ease of escaping the Sentinel's combos.
- Use a shield with 100% physical negation like Heater Shield, in combination with Green Turtle Talisman and Pickled Turtle Necks to keep your stamina bar high
- Don't expect to defeat this boss as soon as you see him, especially if this is your first experience playing a From Software game. Try exploring the region and come back once you've leveled up and found more powerful gear.
Melee Strategy
In and Out: Wait for Tree Sentinel to finish an attack and get in a quick hit or two before rolling away to avoid the follow-up. Allow it to approach you again and repeat. A good shield can help buy you time to escape, especially since many of its attacks have substantially different timings so learning how to dodge them all is challenging. Once it enters Phase 2, be sure to preserve enough stamina to run away and roll when it starts winding up a Shield Crush.
Shield and Poke: Any weapon with a thrusting light attack, such as Short Spears or Rapiers, can be used while guarding. Stand to Tree Sentinel's right and a little towards its hind leg, so that some of its attacks swing over your head and miss. Stay as close as possible, keep your shield up whenever possible, and poke with thrusting attacks. You'll still get hit sometimes which will drain your stamina, but the gaps between its attacks tend to be long enough for you to recharge your stamina. Only lower your shield in order to close distance. This strategy allows you to avoid learning dodge timings except for distance-closing moves like Charging Attack and Leap Attack. Once his health bar reaches 25%, you can summon Lone Wolf Ashes to whittle down the remainder of its health.
Parries: Almost all of Tree Sentinel's most frequent attacks are parriable, but the timing is tricky for many of the normal Side Swings. The easiest way to defeat it with parries is to learn the timing for Charging Attack and Leap Attack specifically, then stand a ways away to bait those. Once you land a parry, hit it with a charged heavy attack and then back off to provoke another Charging Attack or Leap Attack. Once it hits Phase 2 you'll need to be able to dodge its Shield Crush move as well, but it'll do that less frequently than its more punishable moves.
RL1 Wretch: Use Barbaric Roar and then perform jumping attacks whenever Tree Sentinel is after an attack. With Low weight Tarnished can still survive most of the attacks and has a fastroll, which allows to escape difficult situations with ease.
Magic and Ranged Strategy
Although Tree Sentinel's Golden Retaliation ability can make magic strategies frustrating at first, its attacks are very telegraphed. So once you learn when it's safe to shoot it, the fight gets much easier. Use a shield to block if necessary, then focus on keeping your distance and shooting it when it's in the middle of an attack. If you're using a spell with shorter range, like Carian Slicer or Catch Flame, then you'll need to play more like a melee build and follow up his attacks with these spells.
You can use horseback to make this fight even easier as long as your spells have enough range. Just be careful not to cast a spell while it prepares Golden Retaliation.
Attacks & Counters
Attack | Description | Counter |
Side Swing | Swings its halberd in various directions on its right flank | Rolling into the swing will usually position you towards the front or back of the horse, which will give you a chance to get in a hit before the next attack. You can also roll away to get some distance and provoke a Charging Attack or a Leap Attack |
Stab | Stabs its halberd forward | Roll to your right to end up on its more vulnerable left flank |
Horse Bash | The steed throws itself suddenly to its right, often leaving one open to another attack. | This is hard to dodge since it happens so fast. Your best bet is to avoid lingering on the right flank, and instead try to stick to the front or back |
Rearing Slam | Rears up, then slams down its halberd in front of it creating a small shockwave. | Get in a hit while the horse is rearing, then roll to your right to avoid the halberd |
Rearing Swing | Rears up, then swings its halberd counterclockwise. It will always start the fight with a particularly slow version of this move | Get in a hit while the horse is rearing, then roll to your right to avoid the swing |
Hoof Attack | Rears up, then slams down its hooves. This is the only attack where its hooves themselves deal damage. | Get in a hit while the horse is rearing, then roll to either side |
Charging Attack | Runs towards you and swings its halberd clockwise once it gets close. Usually uses this when you're far away | Roll into it once it gets close. It will usually keep running some distance after swinging, so this is a good chance to heal, cast spells, or reposition |
Leap Attack | Jumps towards you while swinging its halberd clockwise. Usually uses this when you're a medium distance away | Roll in the direction it's moving to minimize the chance the halberd will hit you and position yourself to attack after it lands |
Twirling Swing | Turns around, rears up, then does a far-reaching counterclockwise swing. Often used after a combo when the player is retreating | Be careful when you retreat and keep enough stamina to roll when it does the final swing |
Golden Retaliation | Shield: The Sentinel raises its shield in response to projectile spells. If the spell hits the shield, it counters by firing a beam back at the attacker, dealing holy damage. | Either avoid ranged combat entirely, focus on spells that don't use projectiles, or carefully time your spells for when the Tree Sentinel is in the middle of another attack. |
Torch Swing | Torch: Swings its torch in various directions on its left flank | Roll into the swing. The torch attacks aren't part of combos, so there's a slightly wider window of opportunity to get in attacks |
Torch Slam | Torch: Slams its torch down parallel to its left flank | Roll away |
Torch Stab | Torch: Rears up, then stabs its torch forward | Get in a quick hit while it's rearing, then roll to your left to avoid the stab |
Phase 2 | ||
---|---|---|
Shield Bash | Shield: Raises its shield and slams it into the player | Roll to either side of the shield |
Shield Crush | Shield: Rears up or leaps into the air and then slams its shield down, creating a large shockwave. It will always use this once it hits 60% health to signal the beginning of Phase 2 | Run away and roll as you see the shield descending to avoid the attack. The area of effect is much larger than it looks and deals a massive amount of damage if it connects, so it's wise to roll even if it looks like you're far enough away. This attack does have a long recovery period, so if you're confident with your timing you can also roll in and land a few attacks while it recovers |
: Attack can be parried

really weird that's there's only two (technically three) of these guys throughout the entire game, and two DTSes in Leyndell and Farum Azula. you'd think they'd appear more often in at least the early-game and inside Leyndell itself, and gradually get phased out by Draconic Tree Sentinels later, but weirdly this is one of the field bosses NOT copy-pasted all over the place despite probably being one of the most logical bosses to have patrolling Altus during the day (and maybe being replaced by Night's Cav at night?) I'd even be fine with them occasionally being a boss for some minor erdtrees (like the erdtree in Limgrave), at least give those places more variety than being Tree Avatar/Snake encounters.
Killed them one at a time in the AP and didn't get any rewards for them. Happened in my last playthrough too, anyone know why?

Charging Attack is extremely punishable. If you dodge in the same direction that he charges you can stay close to him and get 2-3 safe hits in.

Weird you only encounter these guys twice, feels like there's more of them than that

try hop onto the church of elleh, use your long bow with fletched arrow, and shoot him to death~ no difficult maneuver, just aim and shoot~

open world bosses with fish memories..hit, run, hide, hit again! I love open world souls like.

The surest way to kill them is to hit them from a distance, run away, turn back to their old state and hit them again.

This guy is quite literally insurmountable challenge when you just start the game, even with some upgrades and leveling up it's still very difficult to take him down. Turns out to be one of the biggest pushovers once you've beaten the game several times

3 bosses I died to the most is this one, Crucible Knight and Ulcerated Tree Spirit. However, Tree Sentinel was the first I fought among them. I was like "If I can't beat him I probably won't finish the game", also it was good training for me as I was still learning the controls at the time. He wasn't the first boss I beat but he was the first to give me a hard time. And it was good training as everything past Limgrave wasn't as hard to beat tbh. Even Malenia killed me only like 10 times before I beat her.

Like the Draconic Tree Sentinel, the duo just outside the outer wall can be killed without effort by sneaking up behind them and using poison mist. Just wait until they move from the top landing to the second one.
Bring at least 3 cerulean flasks.

Im convinced this guy and all his variants were supposed to have separate health bars from their horses but they just didnt have time to make unmounted movesets for them

As long as this dude was alive, I could still summon at most effigies of martyr in limgrave. That's with Godrick dead. The dragon still allive and the 2 effigies near it have no summons tho. Too bad people pvp around the sentinnel's location.

I love how much this boss is designed to be fought straight out the gate. His moveset consists of a counter to pretty much every attack available to each starting class. He has really delayed attacks that force new players to figure out timing their rolls. He had huge AOEs that teach them to not make too bold of assumptions about whether or not you’re within the hitbox. He has a lot of attacks that come at super quick that can easy estus punish. He has just enough health to be challenging but manageable at the very beginning. He drops a sick weapon that players can work towards if they don’t have any other ideas moving forward.
I really appreciate the effort they put into this boss as being the true tutorial boss, for people who want to take the challenge.
- Anonymous
The only thing i dont like about this boss is how it sometimes does follow-up-attacks, and sometimes it doesnt, starting from the exact same attack.

Tree sentinel: greetings, tarnished. Believe it or not, i'm part of the tutorial.
Tarnished: what will you teach me?
Tree sentinel: can you defeat me?
Tarnished: no, i just started. I don't even have a horse
Tree sentinel: run the fck away, then.

Super underrated bosses. These hit all the marks for me in terms of visual clarity and fairness. Their attacks are easily reduced to animation we see before (i.e. when the attack comes out), their spacing is neither too aggressive nor too lenient and generally speaking there's not much guesswork to where the damage they inflict lands.
Just a really nice boss overall.

Wish there were more of these guys scatered across the lands between like the Night Cavalry or Erdtree Avatars. They could guard the hero's graves or patrol one specific church of marika in each new area.

I'm 100% sure that if a horse covered in such heavy armor carrying a rider with the same armor type, (possibly weighing around a ton) did a sideways lunge to bash opponents would break all 4 of its legs and die, or couldn't run again in a best-case scenario.
All I try to say is I love this boss, the music, the style but that single move is 100% bullsh*t

What's underneath the armor, do we know what creatures Tree Sentinels are?
Also, wish I could get that horse armor for Torrent.

The absolute worst camera in Fromsoft history. They truly outdid themselves. It's like the camera wants to constantly find out if it's a male or female horse.

I love the fact that the duo in Altus respawn if you don't kill both of them. I can use one of them as a tool for parry training and warm up.
- Anonymous
As much as I love the Asylum Demon (as a first boss), i think Tree Sentinel gets the spot for the best. I know it's technically not the first boss in Elden Ring, but it's the one the game *lets* you bash your head against it over and over again until you win. Not only that, but it shows just how different Elden Ring is from the other games instantly. If you're struggling, you can just.. leave. Do something else, explore, get better gear, level up, try different tactics, summon someone or something, just experiment! You can always go back to him and beat his ass and feel like you've become stronger. It's an amazing reminder of just how big and well made this game is. Love it so much.
That shield is amazing too

I would like to actually thank Fextra here!
Tree Sentinel's Shield Crush attack that he does in second phase would hit me every single time he did it, and I was never able to figure out how to dodge it properly. If it wasn't for the tip on how to avoid it on this page, I don't think I would've ever been able to avoid that attack.
So seriously, thank you Fextralife for teaching me how to time my dodge for that attack!

READ FOR BEST CHEESE,
Righy infront of perfumers grotto, (left of giant staircase, and where lesser rune Bear is) is a small platform where you jump on top and have the boss spawn in, then aggro the boss/es so that they would attack you, (note that there is a second platform that they can only get up top when doing their jump attack) then lure them into the small opening between a wall and a boulder that it can't seem to pass through because of its size and attack, one of the sentinels will attack, but if you dodge it and move back a bit, it will seem like you've de-aggrod the boss without despawing it, attack to aggro it, then rinse and repeat until you've killed the boss.
- Anonymous
You can block the giant leap much more reliably than dodging it knowing he'll never follow up in time to take advantage of the stagger
How to get the Golden Halberd easy and early: Pick Vagabond. Kill Golden Vow scarab in Limgrave and put it on your halberd. Return to kill Tree Sentinel later.

It's crazy that some first step grace gankers still have this guy in their worlds.

I could be wrong, but it seems like horseback enemies have a bit less of the depth that other enemy types have.
The other horseback enemies do a big leaping slash that usually misses. They just don’t feel like normal fights.
Tree sentinel though is engaging enough, with the fireballs and the shield lightning attack
However it’s still one of the easiest enemies to no-hit that has boss-like health, whereas it seems they put quite a bit of work at making most other enemies difficult to no-hit, by having roll-catching and AoEs, etc.

The duo in leyndell can be missed for some reason, i cheesed the draconic tree sentinel with poison mist and have worked my way to Godfreys golden shade and upon returning to the duos location they don't spawn, I've checked my inventory and I don't have the shield so I definitely didn't kill them

Get on the balcony next to them, use rotten breath, wait, repeat when status effect ends, easy fight.

It is actually possible to fight one of the ones before Leyndell without triggering the other to attack.

The godslayer's greatsword weapon art highly trivialized the duo bossfight as it does massive damage and can also stop them in their attack animations

One of his shield bashes is kinda broken, the horse's feet in the air can hit you for full damage before the shield comes down

His ost got a new phase in 1.04. I think its worth adding as trivia

For any one struggling with this guy fight him on horseback . His attack on torrent are really easy to avoid and watch out for his shield attack he can knock of horse easily with it .If you are using a quick weapon on horseback like a straight sword stick close to him spam you attack 2 to 3 times for quick easy damage and repeat this . If you are using a slow weapon keep your distance do a charged R2 after his attack and watch your stamina bar .
So technically, tree sentinels are resistant while simultaneously having the weakest defense to lightning. Am I reading that correctly?

BTW vagabonds and samurais have it easy, WA attack does crazy poise damage

They gave him phase 2 music lmao, It changes when he starts slammin

You can cheese the leyndell duo from behind by sneaking and using poison mist.

If you're patient it's pretty easy once you get Torrent. You're fast enough to easily get out of range of his attacks and can ride in to poke in between them. Just don't get greedy

Probably very unpopular opinion, but this is one of my favorite bosses in the game. Beat him RL1 NG+7 with a +0 Club. Very fun.

Just stay close to this guy, hug his horse, with a 100% physical shield up all times. Learn when he attacks only once and R2 after blocking an attack or move out the way then jump R2 him. Do NOT run away from him, if you need to flask heal, do that instead of attacking after blocking a 1 hit attack.

I beat this boy with level 1, an unupgraded club with 4 estus naked after 2 hours. His moveset aren't bad, it's reachable, the only problem was that in phase two the shield move, the long-delayed slam down after the jumping charge and the jump up slam down can one-shot you. Quite a fun fight, also maybe i am tripping but his long delayed slam after a combo that start with a jump charge has a lingering hitbox so you have to dodge right and left for that attack only.

The tips above like "roll away" for every attack are hot garbage.
Roll in, preferably towards the horse butt or the shield side. You can also go directly in front of horse, but he can easily reach you here. There is only 1 combo that can extend behind him, and it's part of a chain, so if you know the tell of when it's safe [his weapon will rest on his shoulder when he is done] you can safely attack there.
Roll in for all his attacks. There is a swipe followed by a stab and a swoop that will miss you entirely if you're up on his body [might be dependent on weapon attacks moving hitbox of player, i can't tell for sure but that combo always missed me when i was up on the horse].
Shield phase is only intimidating if you don't understand how to use i-frames with rolls in this game. Roll into his shield ground slam. If you don't have perfect timing, run away/roll away from his regular shield bash with the scary sound effect. That one has a lingering hitbox that requires precise timing to dodge, so running from that is....acceptable, but you should learn how to git gud.
I beat him with the starting vagabond. I used the big 2H spear thing. i staggered him 3x during the entire fight. it took about 4 attempts but it's not hard if you understand how these games work

did they nerf the damage for the starter one? I remember 1.0 his shield ground slam would kill a lvl 1 wretched at full hp (even with soldier armor). now u actually live even without armor. Or is it just me?

You can jump when the AoE lands to avoid damage. I'm not sure why it's not written here but it's pretty useful if you're going to melee him.

i come with more tidings of underhanded cheating. fresh out of the gate i fought him and always would get him down about half way and then he'd hit me through my shield. i thought it might be dead-angle nonsense and thought it was kind of cheap to include it as a basic attack move, but put up with it. after about the 3rd time, i was convinced my inputs weren't going through. so i created a little test. instead of actually fighting him, i got his aggro and stood well outside of his range. then i just held the block button. if he got too close i'd roll and then continue blocking. i kept my eye on the stamina gauge and made sure there was no new mechanic at play i didnt understand. then several times, when he'd wind up for a big attack, right as he dropped his axe, my shield would lower itself. and quickly come back up. i mashed the button extra-hard to ensure it wasn't a problem with the controller. the shield stayed up until his next attack. well out of range, right at the end of the swing, the shield lowers and rises back up. i flee from the fight and stand and hold my shield up in the cave you start off in and after about 3 minutes, the shield never lowered. i walked back out and tried one more time and the shield would drop as he swung. a few weeks later, i told my friend about it and despite the updates, i started a new character walked him out there and showed him. straight up cheating. try it for yourself.

I swear his aoe is broke. I'll roll to not get hit by the shield then get tailed by some **** wind that does half my health.

It was very easy initially I avoided him and I use basic first spell as astrologer ,I only helped myself and climbed the stone near so he could not reach me almost and shoot few times he goes back and repeat easy

For the duo fight in Leyndell, if you rush past to the grace and reset, you can pull them back 1 at a time towards the grace. Still have to kill both for credit, but was much easier (disclaimer: did this pre patch 1.03)

Remember the Giant Sentinel? this is him now, he borrowed the shield of the Dragonslayer Armour and poured molten gold on it which gave the shield a golden color, and then he decided to become a erdtree lunatic and was granted a Horse, however he had the shitty standard horse and not the Deluxe 99,99$ Dragon Horse which can spit fire cause he was poor since they use runes instead of souls, and one rune is equal to 10000 souls, the litteraly poor giant sentinel had no other choice as his earlier world was turned to dust and there was only a freak with a red hood eating corpses, and so he decided to spawnkill new characters so he can gain a bit of runes to pay his long debts

I pity pure Faith builds on this boss. Faith gives you access to Fire and Holy damage on your weapons, both of which he's resistant to. Only option you have is to rely on Lightning incantations, but that leaves you vulnerable to his shield's counter-nuke, lol.
Good luck, faith boys :)

I was a but overleveled by the time i reached the duo at Leyndell. I had beaten Radhan and 90% of the lower areas so my Golden Halberd was +8. I fought them 1 at a time but i didn't even need the horse this time. Felt good to destroy them with their own weapon. I am the Tree Sentinel now.
The real tutorial starts with this guy. Spent nearly an hour trying to take the one in Limgrave down.
